âIt was certainly something of theirs,â Oliver sad with a frustrated little grunt. âPerhaps the Gods had the way planned but without our parents nothing would have lined up properly. I ask you, once again, to not speak to me like I am a simpleton.â
âAnd please, stop calling me Mister Coggsworth!â
But then, just as soon as he had said it, she was cutting through the crowd in a desperate attempt to get away from him. Really, truly, it was all his fault. He shouldnât have said such a thing. Perhaps he really was the idiot she claimed him to be.
It wasnât her fault and it certainly wasnât fair that she was not able to pursue her dreams. In truth, women not being allowed to attend university wasnât even something he agreed with. Everyone should be able to pursue their education.
But there Oliver had gone and shoved his foot in his mouth.
âWait! Eloise!â He chased after her, reaching out to take her wrist. âAt least let me apologize before you go. I am aware we exchange quips and words often, but that was low, even for me. Entirely, well, entirely inappropriate to say the least. I should not have spoken down to you in such a manner. Is there anything I can do to show you my apology is sincere?â

Eloise had assumed that Oliver would simply let her fade into the crowd, counting her storming off as a win for himself before he merrily went on with his day.
Instead, he had pursued her. Both verbally and physically, his following of her was almost loud enough to cause a scene. Certainly it was enough to draw the attention of a couple of locals, which was in turn enough to slow Eloise to the point where she could be caught up with.
Her escape was likewise not aided by the fact that Oliver was considerably taller than her, and therefore able to close the gap between them quicker than she was able to increase the distance. But the very moment his hand came to rest on her, she stopped in her tracks.
Casual touch was something that the pair had left behind in childhood, their days of poking and prodding at each other for annoyance purposes shifting to verbal sparring once society deemed they were of an age where touch was frowned upon. Linking arms was one thing - perfectly acceptable in the eyes of society. Grasping at wrists... implied a sort of familiarity.
Which, yes, they did technically have. But when Eloise was as upset as she was at present, she did not need the reminder.
âI-â she faltered, eyes dropping to where Oliverâs hand remained on her wrist before flitting up to observe the male.
She had not been feigning offense, but she had not expected him to care about how she took in his words. His serious response had caught her off guard, and his apology... seemed genuine. But how much could she trust that they were not in a game of cat and mouse with a strategic truce? Would he not just file away her response to his words to save for a crushing blow later?
âI do not believe that you wonât find some way to bring it up again in the future, so I truly do not know. But might I draw your attention to the fact that you stressed that it was low, even for you? So, you admit that you purposefully seek out arguments on the lower side?â she questioned, pausing only to let the words heâd uttered prior to her departure process.
âAnd what am I meant to call you? It is your name.â
