“yeah, um, yeah…” he started, trying to come up with a better reason for him to be acting strangely. he had never really spoken to anyone about his past expect the people who were in it. even then their knowledge of the truth was slim. “you know, i just never really realized how pretty you were.” owen quickly played it off with a small smile. if he was being honest he had always noticed how pretty she was but they were friends; this was not his secret love confession he was making her aware of. “if you don’t like them just let me know and i’ll find new ones. maybe i need to get like a dry erase board so that i can write books without having to write in books. because you really can’t erase books that well.” he teased half-heartily knowing he had never really tried to erase the books. a part of him even liked writing in the margins, felt like breaking the rules but in a good way. “no seriously you are fine. don’t worry about me, i just kind of get like this sometimes. it’s no big deal.”

she watched him, wide eyes glowing with concern. the next words to slip out of his mouth were ones she was not expecting. aurelia anticipated he’d ask her to leave, or ignore her concern. she never would have guessed he would call her pretty. it was owen, someone who surely viewed her only as a friend. aurelia could feel her cheeks turn pink. clouded by confusion, aurelia felt her mind drift off the topic of worry and hone in on the unexpected compliment. “ thanks, you are too, ” she blurted, “ not pretty, like you’re handsome. you know what i mean. ” the brunette mentally cursed herself for being so awkward. she was grateful when their conversation returned to the topic of books -- something aurelia knew much about. “ i’m sure i’ll love them, ” she reassured him. “ don’t do that ! i like reading the stuff you right in the margins. it adds to the book experience. and besides, you always make good points, ” she said in the most casual tone she could muster. “ oh, okay. but of course i worry about you. you’re a great friend, owen. you deserve nothing but the best, ” she stated, a smile glossing over her lips.

“ oh, i’m sorry about your dad, ” she empathized. “ my dad is a piece of work, too. well anyway, at least you didn’t have to be around him for too long ! you didn’t really miss much, but then again, i’m not the best person to ask. i don’t know half the drama that happens around here. i kind of just do my own thing. ”

the way his friend spoke about the thing that shall not be named was spot on. she described everything he felt when he smoked, it was relaxing. it was like everything sort of left his body and he was blissfully numb. that was when his urge came back, the shaking in his hands. while he had not been a hard core addict like some of the others in his drug rehabilitation center, he had been over the edge. he sat remembering what it was like there, and how he had tried so hard to quit. he had gone a month without anything. he drank, and that settled down. lots of sex, the sex helped too. but the thought of them recently circling his life made it hard to resist the temptation. “um, right, music. okay well i would probably… uh, i would probably suggest, uh, well you would probably like wildfire by rachel platten. boys like girls is kind of cool, parachute? older stuff you would probably like christina aguilera, not new christina. like her young stuff. or maybe coldplay? any of those would possibly work for you. i mean i don’t really know your music taste though, just books really.”

aurelia, finally taking notice of the odd way her friend was acting, furrowed her brows. “ are you okay, owen ? is it something i said ? ” she asked, concern laced into her words. she knew owen’s past was rocky, but aurelia never questioned him about it. she figured he’d open up to her if he wanted to, and if not, she definitely wouldn’t poke around. aurelia hoped whatever was troubling her friend wasn’t too serious, or something that could easily be cured by a lighthearted conversation. “ thank you so much for the recommendations. i’m sure i’ll love it, ” she said with a half smile. aurelia, still concerned about his state of being, bit down on her bottom lip. “ hey, if you want to be alone or something, you can always tell me. i promise i won’t be offended or anything. i just want to make sure you’re okay. you seem a little off, that’s all, ” she said tentatively.

“Serious question, what’s a better use of four dozen eggs … a house egging rampage for the tool who didn’t tip me last night and his dickface friends or a full on cupcake bake off between me, myself and i to prove that yes, cupcakes are better than people. I’m honestly torn, please help.”

“ hmm, definitely the baking. i guess egging the house isn’t a bad option, but you shouldn’t stoop to their low level. you’re way better off without them. i vote the cupcake bake off, because you’ll get to eat them once you’re done !! and since they didn’t treat you to a tip, it’s only right you treat yourself to some delicious cupcakes. ”

“it never is.” owen agreed, “you liked it? gosh, isn’t it the best? just the way it makes your body feel, and you’re mind just.. man it’s the best.” it was times like these were he just wanted to some so badly; but, weed is what started him on his dark path and could bring back past temptations. so maybe he could just live through aurelia’s druggie days. “but seriously you and weed? never saw that happening in a million years.” as he quickly changed the topic back to what she was originally here to talk about: books. “i hadn’t ether but i felt like all the books i was telling you to read were old and boring so i thought i would change my reading habit to better suit yours. you are welcome of course. wait jane austen, you don’t think i’ve read jane austen? she’s the best how could i not have read her work? okay, so it’s settled i will re-read jane austen and you will read new john green.”

“ shh, not so loud !! someone might hear you, ” she said, her voice panicky. “ but yeah, i did like it. i’ve never felt so relaxed in my life. it was like everything i’ve been worrying about my entire life didn’t even matter. anyway, i doubt i’d do it again. it was a good stress reliever, but i need to be stressed. that probably sounds crazy, ” aurelia laughed. “ i never saw it coming either. cece made me feel safe, though. i’m glad she was there with me, ” she said with a nod, and didn’t argue once owen changed the subject. “ i like old and boring !! but i appreciate you changing things up for me. you’re a good friend, owen. you’ve read austen ? gosh, i don’t know why i ever doubted you ! i have to say, you seem almost too perfect to be real, ” she laughed. “ it’s hard to come across jane austen fans these days, ” the brunette said, feeling her cheeks turn a light shade of red. “ it’s settled, then. hey, since i’m here, do you think you could recommend some new music ? i’ve overplayed all my records, and my ears are in desperate need of something new, ” she explained, “ today was payday, and i think it’s okay for me to splurge just a bit. ”
