DOOM Eternal
So the more I think about DOOM Eternal, the less enthused I get about it.
Let me start off with my strongest opinion. At first I liked the new armor design for the Doom Slayer, but as I looked at it more, I became more aware that it was the central part of a bigger problem with the game's overall visual design in general. It's overwrought. It's too damn much. The look and feel of DOOM 2016 was a good blend of old and new. Updated just enough to be in line with the modern zeitgeist and still capture the essence of classic DOOM's aesthetic. The Praetor suit takes design queues from the original Doomguy, but also incorporates touches from DOOM 3 and some more modern franchises like Halo. The designs for the demons themselves are along the same lines. Modernized, but still easily recognizable as an analog to the classic DOOM.
Gameplay-wise, they've added too many bells and whistles to it. The arm blade takes away from the brutality that made Glory Kills fun and memorable. The Doom Slayer pulls enemies apart with his hands, stomps their heads apart like overripe melons, buries his arm up to the elbow in a demon's ribcage. The new Glory Kills lack the impact of the old ones. There’s too many gimmicks cluttering everything up. We don’t need a grappling hook on the Super Shotgun, we don’t need a little shoulder cannon tacked onto the armor, it’s all clutter. DOOM 2016 worked because it was simple and streamlined with its fast gameplay. The Slayer was a force of nature ripping through the forces of Hell. An unstoppable, fearsome juggernaut that acted on instinct.
This segues into my final and possibly most worrying point. I think they’ve taken the Doom Slayer and watered down his character into a more generic Badass McShootman. The thing about DOOM that stood out to me above every other first-person shooter is that the Slayer's body language was very, very distinct and you knew exactly what he was about and how he felt just from watching his arms and legs flailing around in front of you. He pulls demon's heads off and chucks the corpse away without a second thought because demons are trash to him. There's nothing but contempt in every glory kill in the game. At no point does the Slayer look like he's having fun with it. Demons aren't fun. They're a menace to be exterminated and nothing more. He might be a little elaborate with some of them, but there's still this sense of reflex action and instinct behind every single one of them that I'm just not seeing in the new ones. They’re too slick, too polished. In a lot of them, he looks like he’s having fun with it, playing with his food as it were. I feel like that’s not appropriate for the character they established in the first game.
I feel like they just looked at what players liked about the 2016 entry and said “Okay, so we’ll just TURN IT UP TO EEEELEEEEVEENNN!” without thinking about why it worked in the first place, or what made it so appealing. It’s depressing.
Doom map has the word “vile” in its name.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!
