In a moment of calm after the storm of Brexio, it's time to celebrate Davina's birthday! The whole household comes together to make their gratitude toward the ENA nanny known but one well-meaning present brings back memories of the worst day of her life: the day she had lost her parents.
Just posted chapter 39 of The Puzzle!
Starting work on my second draft of chapter 38 of The Puzzle!
Only just a few days ago started editing the chapter ^-^'. I decided sometime during the last month that I finally was ready to DM a campaign so I spent a lot of time on that. It should still be out on time though! Just, like, half of what I wanted to cover, so it'll be shorter than normal.
Natsu's (and Other Dragon Slayer's) Motion Sickness
I haven’t seen all of the anime episodes yet, and I haven’t been about to read much of the manga, so if this is explained, great. If not, maybe this will explain it for you.
I think that Natsu’s motion sickness has to do with the fact that he’s a dragon slayer. I know that’s said in the Grand Magic Games. Stay with me though. Dragon slayers are pretty much dragons in human bodies. That’s how they act sometimes at least. How often does a dragon ride a train, or in a carriage? I think his motion sickness comes from the fact that a dragon is made to fly, not to ride some vehicle.
There’s some good proof for this too. In the second episode, Natsu says that he doesn’t get motion sick when flying with Happy because he considers Happy as his friend. Taking that logic, Lucy carrying him shouldn’t cause any problem, yet Happy says something along the lines of, “First the train, then the magic mobile, and then Lucy,” during the Lullaby arc. Now, I take a lot of what Happy says with a grain of salt. He may have been joking, but he my also be right. What if being carried by Lucy really DOES make him motion sick? That would go against what Natsu said earlier. BUT when does Natsu not get motion sick?
When he’s flying. Happy. That Legion thing in Edolas. Neither make him sick. True I haven’t seen him ride other animals, so I can’t say that it’s not just the fact that they’re animals, not vehicles.
Fairy Tail: Nalu
I was rereading Fairy Tail (even though I haven’t finished it yet ^^;) and came across an early scene commonly used by Nalu shippers as evidence that Natsu cares about Lucy, myself included. In this scene, Kageyama from Eisenwald attacks Lucy and Natsu saves her. With just this description, it’s easy to see why many shippers see this as a Nalu scene, but there’s more to it. Kageyama had attacked Natsu earlier. Natsu is reacting to hearing Kage’s voice, it just so happens that Lucy is the one he saved. Was the ship tease intentional? There are plenty of other ways the scene could have been written without the tease, so why did Hiro Mashima write the scene this way? Let’s dissect this scene.
First the action that I believe starts this scene: Kage attacking. What was this move for? To reestablish Natsu as the hero after him being mostly comedic for the story arc. But for Natsu to be shown as a hero, he has to be protecting someone weaker than himself, so who out of the bunch is weaker? Lucy and Happy. It could also be argued that Natsu saving himself counts as well, since he was almost completely out of it due to motion sickness. That is three people to choose from, so why Lucy? The simplest answer that I can think of is that Kageyama didn’t notice Natsu and Happy behind her, she was straight ahead of him, and Lucy is the audience surrogate character. So is that it? Well, let’s look at other ways this scene could have been done.
What would have happened if Happy got attacked? Let’s say he was in front of Lucy instead of behind so that he’s more noticeable and an easier target. This still puts Lucy behind Natsu, so the audience still gets the action shot, but without the ship tease. Why wasn’t this chosen as the way the scene should go? One, Happy could probably dodge out of the way with his wings or something (Lucy could have moved as well, but she has less combat experience and so is more likely to be stunned). Two, the bond building between Natsu and Lucy wouldn’t have grown. A lot goes on during Fairy Tail, but what it’s essentially about friendship (Friendship is Magic in Fairy Tail, after all) and how a bunch of strangers can become a giant family.
So let’s say Kageyama attacks Natsu. Instead of standing in front of Natsu, Lucy and Happy are behind him. Kage sees the wizard and decides to revenge himself. Again, Lucy is behind Natsu so we still get the cool action shot. Natsu is also more likely to attack rather than dodge in a situation like that. So why didn’t this happen? First off, Lucy placing her between Natsu and the dark guild feels like a very deliberate move. She’s shielding Natsu while he’s incapacitated, even if there isn’t much she can do to protect him just yet beyond blocking him from view. Lucy may not be the strongest in the guild, but she still does care about her guild members, Natsu especially since they’ve been through everything together from the very first episode/chapter. Granted, they haven’t been through a lot together just yet, but Natsu did save her from Bora, brought her to Fairy Tail, rescued her from a Vulcan (though she probably could have handled him with Taurus), and listened to her during the Daybreak arc. Second, this again does nothing for their bond.
Unfortunately for Nalu shippers, the ship tease was probably not intentional (unless they have gotten together at this point. I’m really behind). The beauty of this scene and scenes like it, however, is that they can be interpreted either way without any harm to the series. Are they just really close friends who would do anything to protect each other, or are they slowly falling in love? Whichever one it true, these scenes are important for building those bonds.
Posted chapter 37 of The Puzzle!
Starting work on my second draft of chapter 38 of The Puzzle!
Finished work on the first draft of chapter 38 of The Puzzle! And, potentially, chapter 39 as well. There's a segment at the end of chapter 38 that, depending on time and chapter flow, could become it's own chapter. We shall see.
I'd like to jump straight into working on my second draft tomorrow but I got life stuff happening so probably won't be able to until Sunday (Saturday at the earliest).
Starting work on The Puzzle chapter 38!
Apothecary Diaries Reference - The Meeting of the Named
The Meeting of the Named was introduced in LN14, and theoretically it's a good source of inspiration for fanfics exploring character backstories given that it puts all the significant clans into one space. It happens once every five years, so assuming they stayed on schedule, it's happened quite a few times within the lifetimes of the significant characters and clans. Now for a reference list, here's how I understand the timeline:
LN 14 - Meeting of the Named is held. Maomao is somewhere around 21-22 years old (21 as of LN12), Basen is around 22 years old (22 as of LN13). Using Basen as a reference for the Ma clan, with Baryou being about one year older and Maamei about two years older. This is the first meeting the La clan has attended in over fifteen years (and the first since Lakan took hold of the clan)
Five years before LN14 - Meeting of the Named is held. Maomao is around 16-17, Basen is around 17. This would be the last one that the Shi clan attended (assuming they even did) before they got smoked
Ten years before LN14 - Meeting of the Named is held. Maomao is around 11-12, Basen is around 12
Fifteen years before LN14 - Meeting of the Named is held. Maomao is around 6-7, Basen is around 7. This would be the last one that the La clan attended before Lakan took over and they went on a hiatus from attending. Edit: Should go without saying that Maomao obviously did not attend this, should've said that immediately
The Ma clan (my beloved), Shi clan, and U clan would be the most of interest here, though the La clan before Lakan took over could also be of interest. Shout out side characters!
Finished editing the newest The Puzzle chapter! Gonna take a break for the weekend to allow for me to refresh my brain and my beta reader time to read. Should get started working on the next chapter either Tuesday or Wednesday
I'm rereading Sword Art Online: Progressive and found myself thinking about how reticent everyone is about sharing IRL information which, combined with some rather boring work I had to do today, lead me to overthink the reason for it. Spoilers for book 4 of the series.
Kirito explains it as a taboo to talk about personal stuff online because, like, doxxing and stuff, presumably. But I feel like that goes out the window when it's no longer a game but your reality. And, also, I get not sharing stuff with Lind or Kibaou or even Argo, but you and Asuna ain't gonna talk about y'all's lives? You've both been held by the other while trying not to cry (Asuna after losing her sword and coming across the PK-ers in the dungeon under Karluin and Kirito at the end of the same book when the weight of bearing the beta tester hatred at 13 gets to him). Come on, y'all are close enough to talk about personal stuff now. Also, like, in the original run of the story, they got married and only thought to exchange information when Aincrad was crumbling and I'm pretty sure they both thought they were going to die. Guys, really?
I get the initial thought of it. I know SAO was originally written for a competition and so was much shorter than the released version (the contest version didn't have the stories about the Moonlit Black Cats, Liz, or Silica, I'm pretty sure) and so maybe finding a natural place for them to discuss their real lives was hard. And, waiting until the end like that makes it feel like they're saying good-bye to their lives in SAO. It's thematic. But it's still kinda ridiculous.
Now, onto why I made this post in the first place. I like to write and, as a writer, I often look at stories and go, "How would I write this?" as a bit of an exercise. Even with stories that I'm absolutely in love with, I'll find parts where I can't help thinking, "Okay, but it would be cool if this happened in a different way." That's the whole basis of fan fiction, after all. So I'm looking at this odd bit of world building and thinking, "You know it would make more sense, to me, if this no IRL talk was a taboo because of the mindset needed to beat the game, not as a holdover from when it was a game."
Now, what do I mean by mindset? Kazuto Kirigaya is a socially awkward 13/14 year-old who hides in his room and in games because the real world is scary. Kirito is a veteran swordsman who can face any monster with intelligence and courage. Kirito has enough leadership ability and charisma to rally 10 other players to beat a floor boss. Kazuto could never. And I'm sure it's the same for most people there. They're all roleplaying as their characters because their IRL selves wouldn't be able to handle their new reality. They're compartmentalizing. (I think I'm using that right.) This would be why it's taboo to talk about the real world and your real life. Reminding Kirito of Kazuto is stripping Kirito of his armour of nonchalance. It's reminding him that he's really just a scared kid who misses his family and regrets pushing them away. It's reminding him that he has no idea what he's doing half the time.
Here's where I go into full on AU territory and start rewriting bits of the story in my head. What can I say? I was very bored.
This compartmentalization will, of course, bleed into real life once the game has been beaten. Suguha, Midori, and… whatever the dad's name is get to see their family member wake up, but in his place is an entirely new person. They would probably try to rationalize it as Kazuto having changed and grown over the two years. I mean, it's not like he was asleep the whole time. He was doing stuff. He was gaining traumas they probably don't even know about. But no, it's not Kazuto who came back, it's Kirito. And it stays Kirito until he manages to complete Kirito's mission and rescue Asuna (and the others) from Sugo. Then, he finally returns to Kazuto. Not the Kazuto they lost, of course, but the Kazuto who survived SAO. Kirito's still there and he always will be, but Kirito and Kazuto are no longer separate entities. They are part of the same person.
Kirito, having been born as a coping mechanism, will still sometimes take over. In GGO, for instance, when the game gets too real. But now Kazuto gets to take over on occasion too. Now, I don't know Kazuto pre-SAO very well and the Kirito we meet in the first episode of the anime isn't treated like his game persona but like he's always like this, so I couldn't say what it would look like when the more Kazuto personality traits comes out of our main character, because I don't know which personality traits can be attributed to him. But I think it would be fun to explore that. If GGO is where Kirito comes out as a trauma response, maybe Kazuto comes out during Alicization or something, since the virtual environment there is less game and more simulated life. Since we the viewer only really know Kirito or the Kirito/Kazuto hybrid that came out of SAO, this would be our first real chance to see and understand the boy who turned into our main character.
Or, maybe we could see Kazuto come out in his Alfheim character. After two years in SAO, the mask of an avatar now feels more comfortable to him than his actual body and he has no one around him that he has to pretend to be okay for.
Continuing on from this, Asuna is Asuna both IRL and in game. She literally uses her own name as a username! I wasn't even doing that in elementary school. But, anyway, Asuna states early in Progressive that she chose to leave the Town of Beginnings and fight because she wants to be herself until she dies. (Which, I understand vibe-wise but is a bit of an unclear motivation. What if who you are isn't someone who fights monsters?) So Asuna is always genuinely Asuna. She's never playing a character. She used to, because of her upbringing, and is sick of it. This sets her up as a foil to Kirito and also shows him that it's okay to not just be the Black Swordsman. That it's okay to be Kazuto, too.
A look at NieR:Automata through 9S's eyes. Started as my attempt to understand 9S's though processes throughout the game (and is still the main purpose) but has kinda turned into a novelization of the route A/B story.
Starting editing on chapter 37 of The Puzzle today. I'm well ahead of schedule for once! :3<
I'd like to keep ahead of schedule so my current plan is to post the chapter May 4th. However, if I finish working on chapter 38 with enough time, I'll consider posting chapter 37 a week early (April 27th). So keep an eye out!
