today i learned about the easter bilby.
Indeed!! Since rabbits, bunnies and hares are, sadly, invasive species in Australia, Bilbys are a much more appropriate Easter mascot for the land Down Under.
Plus they are cute as heck and are incredibly important from an ecological point of view as ecosystem engineers - their tunneling abilities and constructions of intricate underground burrow systems make them an essential element of their habitat. There's a few options around Easter for chocolate Bilbys, and you can see them quickly disappear from the supermarket shelves along with the other Aussie Easter Mascot - Puddles the Chocolate Platypus.
I would also encourage you all to check out DreamWorks 2018 animated short Bilby. The story is really cute and the style plus animation well done :)

there’s a lot of fearmongering about australian wildlife but what tourists should actually be careful about is our oceans and beaches. rips and currents will never be your friend, there’s always a wave that’s bigger than it seems, never go on the rocks, never turn your back on the ocean and always, always swim between the flags.
