bloating the size of my files by anti-archiving them with LoseRar
i believe everyone should use their computer the way they like it the most; using the software they are most comfortable with, configured the way they are most comfortable.
except Gnome desktop environment, nobody should use Gnome DE
while nobody should be restricted or coerced in the way they use their hardware, it is very good to be informed and to inform your peers on the options that are out there.
sharing software, Linux distributions, your configurations, and opinions on them benefits everyone; and trying out new ways to use your own computer, trying things you haven't experienced before, helps you see the medium of computing and it's beauty.
the primary benefits of this are of course having people escape the hell-clutches of microsoft and however the fuck you choose to describe gnome DE
yeah fuck gnome, plasma is where it's at
I'm curious: is "fuck GNOME" some running joke, or are there real problems with it? Had to switch to Debian for work reasons, can't access Hyprland anymore. At the moment I'm on GNOME, and I'd love to not set up i3 again.
for me personally it's both a running gag and a distaste for the software itself
i see you, little kid, installing fifty different applications just to change the titlebar on windows...
i see you, spending hours and days of time learning to customise your desktop just to have it break on the next update...
please, consider linux, where you can customise to your hearts content. where you can make your pc your own. choose a window manager instead of a desktop environment. rebind all the shortcuts... use a terminal for most stuff. change the keyboard on your phone to a hexagonal layout... make your tech experience your own. make it so that your tech is completely unusable by the average person
Started making a list of which programs work and which ones i'll have to find alternatives to, ahead of my first true dive into the world of Linux, and honestly blown away by how much of a fucking lie the whole "linux has no games" thing that i have heard from every place under the sun was
like out of all the games i play, the only one that doesn't work is Roblox (Kernel-level Anticheat, boo, hiss) which i can honestly live without
and whenever a piece of non-game software doesnt work, theres a readily avaliable, actively maintained FOSS alternative right there on Flathub
Honestly thought there would be a lot more issues
this is a meager addition and honestly you could live without it but you can and maybe should replace 'flathub' with 'any package manager' because uh it's true
Trying out Cinnamon for the first time. I mostly have experience with MATE & a little bit of Gnome (not a fan). Anybody have any firm preferences for desktop environment?
not a full fledged DE suite, but if you ever want to try installing an OS from a skeleton i recommended trying the i3 window manager
Today's hot take (and rant) brought to you by your favorite terminal girl:
Web dev* should never have been a job in the first place. The web was supposed to be simple, accessible and free (as in libre). Not only is javascript a mistake, but it's whole ecosystem (libraries and community) is a mistake. Yes, im even arguing against the very website im on in a way. A bunch of simple forums managed by a few devs (and moderators), should be enough to fit all of what we use the web for.
"What about buying stuff on the internet", idealy fuck you, go to your local store (if you can), but in practice, no need for amazon and other gazillion dollar companies, just plain old simple custom stores with simple css and less ads (fuck ads).
"What about interactivity and buttons and all of the stuff that uses Javascript ?", use something else bitch. 2 years before javascript there was fuckin Lua and you didn't need more than that. Sure, use similar stuff, but why javascript ? i know they had their reasons, but there was alternatives and seemingly for no reason js stuck. (enlighten me on this if you want)
"What about electron !!! it's so nice for the programmers !" NO ! If you don't care at all about the power usage/performances of your program you shouldn't touch shit that will go into production. Yeah sure it's easy to spread your 'app' everywhere like a fucking disease.
It's not necessary to tell me how much im wrong, don't trust and care about what people say on the internet, don't trust me, don't even bother yourself with this. It's not necessary.
*some backend people do deserve some respect, front end people, huh... you're doing a shit job and idk how to tell you. But all devs ofc, noob or good, deserve respect. It's just that sometimes we make mistakes. And that im really angy ! >:3
She BASH my SHell 'till i'm Bourne Again.
I mean, you know what? Yeah sure go ahead.
hello linuxblr what are your thoughts on my attempt at Being Funny
i am not happy with this. but i'm not unhappy with it, i guess.
this is not standards compliant, whatsoever.
we should globally ban the introduction of more powerful computer hardware for 10-20 years, not as an AI safety thing (though we could frame it as that), but to force programmers to optimize their shit better
I reblogged this like 9 times kinda jokingly, but software should be able to run on older and less powerful hardware, and consume less power on newer hardware. Like, this is a real problem imo
I completely agree with this but I do need you to understand that the image above is 32 times the size of the lunar mission’s memory
OK.
Yeah okay I’ll reblog that! !!!
Less bloat, more real features.
Emacs is a full OS, minus a filesystem and a set of coreutils. A few megabytes.
Vim can edit files 20 times better than notepad for half the disk space.
We don’t need any advances, but the game designers say “4K RTX HD Pro Max”, and you say (I say this too) “Super computer animation pack for window management + Hardware accelerated terminal emulator + Downloading WAV files for all music on the planet”.
Microsoft says having a TPM is "non-negotiable" for Windows 11
Source: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/microsoft-says-having-a-tpm-is-non-negotiable-for-windows-11/
More info: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/windows-itpro-blog/tpm-2-0-%e2%80%93-a-necessity-for-a-secure-and-future-proof-windows-11/4339066
How to use rufus to make a usb installer to bypass requirements for those who are interested.
Here's how you can bypass Windows 11's CPU, TPM, Secure Boot, 4GB RAM, and other requirements. You can apply updates on incompatible PCs too
This requirement has been proven to be pointless and offer nearly no security benefits whatsoever because of vulnerabilities. All it really does is make any computer pre 2014-2019 and many computers even made during that period completely incompatible and obsolete.
It is literally an arbitrary requirement to force upgrades and fill landfills.
Example of why it is actually pointless and should not be a requirement:
Flaws could allow hackers to steal cryptographic keys and other sensitive data
“These new TPM 2.0 flaws are buffer overflow vulnerabilities discovered by Francisco Falcon and Ivan Arce from Quarkslab who are warning that they could impact billions of devices.
The vulnerabilities in question (tracked as CVE 2023-1017 and CVE-2023-1018) could be exploited by an attacker to escalate privileges and steal sensitive data from vulnerable devices. This would completely negate the added security that TPM 2.0 chips were designed to add to Windows 11 in the first place.”
It is also advisable to disable bitlocker automatic encryption of drives not only would it impact performance but makes pc repair, drive migration and other things usually impossible if windows fails like it tends to do.
Starting with Windows 11 24H2, when you perform a clean install or reinstall the OS on a device with a TPM chip and Secure Boot enabled, all
There are also documented examples of the government extracting tpm keys for bitlocker to break the encryption
The Intercept has a new story on the CIA’s—yes, the CIA, not the NSA—efforts to break encryption. These are from the Snowden documents, and
And the fact it can be cracked by someone determined enough with enough knowhow.
YouTuber shows how BitLocker can be cracked in less than a minute
So it doesn’t offer any real world security. Just makes recovering your files in the event of failure or damage to the computer a major pain, if not impossible by any practical means.
It is more pointless entropy for the illusion of security and raising hardware requirements.
Educational purposes you decide
I'm too new to [tumblr] to try and make a gimmick blog. I'll check back after lunch to see if anyone wants to be friends.
hi from another very new linux blog
i mean mine is relatively new
You know, opening your PC to see an error of something not loading right, before your desktop loads in, is typically Not Good. Turns out, that error was just me just copy-and-pasting something I found on Stack Overflow into my .profile file
highly relatable experience
At one point my arch install by itself without Firefox and all the dependencies for that was ~389 packages. As a result of this, my system was held together like a house of cards by a handful of shell scripts. Truly god awful experience.

hi, i’m your local laid off discord employee, here to talk about exactly how safe it may or may not be to talk about Political Activism on discord. my credentials here are that i was a senior member of discord’s trust & safety team, which is the team that handles bans, legal investigations, and legal compliance. (my speciality was in child safety, anti-grooming, and taking down CSAM, but i also worked occasionally in low level terrorism issues and assisted that team in investigations.) i also know most of the people still working there in these capacities.
the tldr and most important thing to know is: i do not recommend you plan, discuss plans, or use any kind of hyperbolic (or not) language about violence to government officials or anyone in that vicinity on discord. please use signal instead.
a discord trust & safety employee is technically able to see any message you’ve sent under your account, going all the way back to the beginning of your account. unless you have manually deleted a message, it is viewable to a tns employee. now: it is a tremendous part of being on a tns team that we did NOT invade user privacy without cause. cause was usually: another user reported something you said, and we thought the reported message indicated you might be doing something elsewhere that was illegal (for example: a user says “i’m talking to this girl but she’s in high school lol.” i would then try to find evidence as to whether or not there was a child safety issue there. in this example, we’d require clear admission of age from both the user and the alleged high school girl, and then clear evidence of sexual talk between them, and go from there.) finding evidence required looking though all of that user’s messages.
most of the tns team, as i know them, are pretty resolute about not going further in looking than would be needed for action. most of the tns team that i still speak to is very much on the side of blue. your general conversations are probably perfectly safe, and we were very good at figuring out quickly if someone has reported you maliciously. i don’t believe you need to worry too much about your porn and fanfic and all that.
HOWEVER: reported content must be investigated, and discord can, and has been, legally subpoenaed to turn over user information. again, this has nominally been in Very Evil cases (CSAM and grooming, school shooting threats, murder admissions, etc.) but that could change, either at the federal level, or at the discord policy level. discord, like any social media company, could easily be pressured or forced into taking on different internal policies that could get you in serious trouble if you are organizing violent or “illegal” resistance. if that happens, there is a scenario where this incoming administration is given access to your messages.
again: please do not organize your political or social resistance on discord from now on. please use signal to ensure your maximum safety. do not panic if you have already talks about things on discord: you can easily delete your messages, and that WILL remove from an employee’s view. do that and use signal from now on.
stay safe. i love you. 💕
Say "hello" to a different messaging experience. An unexpected focus on privacy, combined with all of the features you expect.
Secure messaging, anywhere
Matrix, the open protocol for secure decentralised communications
Session is a private messenger that aims to remove any chance of metadata collection by routing all messages through an onion routing networ
Remember: it's someone's data. If it's not your data, they probably are selling it to the government.
on a related note: e-mail is so not safe, even if it seems like this professional thing, more often than not, it's worse than your average messenger app.
yes, this includes protonmail or any other service like that that claims to make your mail secure (unless for the very specific case that _all_ recipients use proton).
If you send a mail from your gmail address to a friend with an outlook address, both google _and_ microsoft can read that!
Agree.
Always use a medium that supports true End-to-End encryption ("true" as in end device to end device, not just service provider to service provider). If there is none available, encrypt your message yourself (e.g GPG Encryption).
i have lived without cd - for too long
Explanation: cd - will take you to your previous directory.
Example: (watch the pwd in the prompt closely)
~/Documents/my-essay $ cd ../writing-guides/
~/Documents/writing-guides $ cp guide.md ../my-essay/
~/Documents/writing-guides $ cd -
~/Documents/my-essay $ ls
essay.docx guide.md
:elpmaxE
Wow, no pesky .. in that second cd command!
That's neat! Didn't know!
!! Lets you input your previously entered command, kinda dangerous, but useful
$ apt upgrade
$ sudo !!
Instead of
$ apt upgrade
$ sudo apt upgrade
You can also use ! To get the most recent command starting with a string. So like !py would run the most recent command in your history that starts with “py” it can be quite handy
Vim, an efficient editor.
Are you tired of doing certain boring actions like deleting 5 lines using the backspace button? Are you tired of using crazy keybinds to copy and paste words and letters? Then vim is for you!
People might think that vim is pretty complicated, but if you just search up how to do certain things while editing text, if you actually try doing it a few times while you're editing text, you will definitely get used to it and your text will flow like a river in no time!
Using vscode and nano will be very boring after this one, just look at this gif example!
If you want to know how it works, just press the "keep reading" button!
the fact i run both of these, very contrasting, very conflicting sideblogs, has me constantly fearing typing out a long, serious, well thought out response to a technical post, and realizing to my horror moments later that i had posted it to the short quips blog - or accidentally posting "She mode my personal Jesus 'till i depeche." to the semi-serious tech support blog
