Thinking about this again, canât get the image of Jedi Tilda Swinton out of my head.
If I were to do a rewrite, I think I would actually keep a lot of the bones of TPM, with the main plot being the protection of Padme, queen of Naboo.
Iâm imagining a scene before the third act where theyâve fought off Maul once already, and theyâre finally close enough to the republic to keep Padme safe.
Anakinâs force powers are already evident, heâs held his own, and Obi-Wan feels threatened, jealous of the attention the boy is getting from his teacher and closest friend.
Qui-Gon speaks in private with the council to confirm their safety and rendezvous, and in light of his bravery, defending himself and others from a sith warrior, the council awards Obi-Wan the rank of knight, skipping the trials.
When she goes to tell Obi-Wan the news, she can sense his jealousy, his fear that everything is about to change, that he isnât ready, that his training isnât over, and that Anakin will cut this short because Qui-Gon plans to train him. She tells him not to worry, tries to calm him. Obi-Wan casts doubt on Anakinâs suitability because of his attachment - heâs already a teenager, and they canât take him from his mother.
Qui-Gon says she has nothing left to teach him - he is already a knight, and every bit her equal. She tells him he is brave, kind, wise beyond his years, and just a little too orthodox. She reminds him of their bond, that their relationship is not like other masters and students, that they fought and nearly died for one another; that it is not attachments that are a weakness, but fear, hatred, and inflexibility. She tells him that he is everything she hoped he would become, and that in the force, death is not the end.
And then in the final act, after Obi-Wan has beaten Maul, Qui-Gon soothes him, reminds him that death is not the end, and evaporates the same way Yoda and Obi-Wan do in the OT.
