Sometimes people don’t want to hear the truth because they don’t want their illusions destroyed.
Friedrich Nietzsche (via an-ordinarywoman)
If Anais Nin wrote astrology
Aries: "She has to make the atmosphere boil."
Gemini: "I am like a person walking through a mirror broken in two."
Taurus: "In reality I care for a few people very deeply, thoroughly and enduringly. Certain connections cannot change like that."
Cancer: "Certain events happen very close to me, others are dim. Some are vital and warm, some have a dreamlike quality."
Leo: "At midnight I had always been metamorphosed into a solitary, estranged wanderer."
Virgo: "The pain I give is only like homeopathy, to heal the pain given me, but it is not a blow to be given. Insidious and subtle."
Libra: "We will both lie to each other, and for the same reason: to create an impossible ideal world."
Scorpio: "He ruled my body with a magnetic rule, master of my dancing."
Sagittarius: "For me, the adventures of the mind, each inflection of thought, each movement, nuance, growth, discovery, is a source of exhilaration."
Capricorn: "At thirteen I wrote: "Is there anyone who will understand me? I do not understand myself."
Aquarius: "Talking on the dream, I am always fertile and voluble. It is my favorite realm, and I am so familiar with its technical aspects."
Pisces: "Poetic vision is not the outcome of blindness but of a force which can transcend the ugliest face of reality..."
The mind has added nothing on human nature. It is a violence from within that protects us from a violence without. It is the imagination pressing back against the pressure of reality.
— Wallace Stevens, from The Necessary Angel: Essays; “The Noble Rider and the Sound of Words,”

Her ability to observe, fully and painfully, a person in isolation was her greatest gift. She agonized, you know. She believed that it was never absurd to get something right. And she agonized with her whole being to get it right. There was no room for error with her because she did not believe in error. She wanted to earn her right to what felt like flawlessness. And when she allowed herself to finally feel close to that particular sense of flawlessness–she put it away. She erased it from her mind as if she’d never touched it, merely dreamed it. But she was ruthless when it came to the struggle; she was in love with the struggle to the point of exclusion of everything that did not feel like a blood-red, aching struggle, even if it was an imaginary one. She was one of those very rare people who believe in poetic truth and are not afraid to let it consume them.
Tennessee Williams, referring to Vivien Leigh, quoted in Follies of God: Tennessee Williams and the Women of the Fog (via violentwavesofemotion)
Because let’s be very clear: strong men - strong men, men who are truly role models, don’t need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful. People who are truly strong lift others up.
Michelle Obama (via awelltraveledwoman)
Some days you know what you want to do in life and on other days, you feel like burying your head in the sand and pretend that you're still far from the crossroads in life where you have to make a decision. Perhaps the first of many important decisions you'll have to make in life
Thunderstorm photographed over the Pacific Ocean at night. The photographer and pilot, Santiago Borja, says he was circling around it at 37,000 feet altitude en route to South America when he captured this spectacular view.
She was her own black hole that pulled in all the light. She was made of dark matter and her force was invisible, unseen except in its effects.

“But what is really your own never does leave you.”
— Jeanette Winterson, from Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?
Full of sadness and self-doubt, she stared at the slowly fading stars and whispered something to herself.
