a big part of growing up is wanting to gather every person you’ve ever been mean to and say “I’m sorry!! It wasn’t worth it!! It wasn’t worth being mean!!! I’m sorry!!!” but you can’t, so just be kind from now on

Modern audiences confused by the vileness of countless literary characters is so funny. They actually think escapism and self insertion we're always the point of protagonists. That was the commonly assumed point of *children's* protagonists. Characters in novels for grown ups were supposed to be interesting because they were different from you and you were quite often supposed to despise some of their thoughts and actions.

I love you angry characters I love you revenge arcs I love you protagonists who kill people and don’t feel bad about it I love you manipulative heroes I love you gray morals I love you terrifying protagonists I love you characters who hold boiling grudges I love you characters who reveal that their perceived harmlessness was just patience the whole time I love you stories about atonement and rage and vengeance that don’t end in forgiveness or guilt I love you stories that explore the healing power of incandescent rage
