Mistakes you should never make during exams!
Exam season is around the corner. We hope your preparation must be going in full swing. Many of you will also be writing their pre-boards, half-yearly, or some other mid term exams.
But today we want to tell you some important things - that you should keep in mind after your preparation which will help you in maximizing your score!
What to do after you are fully prepared?
What to do on the day of your exam?
What to do after your exam?
First and foremost - Avoid Talking About Your Studies Just Before the Exam - Sometimes the best way to relieve stress is to not talk about the topic but, instead, just take a break and let your mind relax.
Rather than cramming or going through your books in those last minutes, trust your preparation. Trust that you have studied what needed to be studied, and now give yourself a mental time out. Clear your mind and go into the exam hall with a fresh mind, devoid of any doubts. This is a proven way of dealing with test anxiety.
  2. Relax & do not read till the last minute - research has proven that studying for long hours doesn’t help much. In fact, studying in short durations and taking some rest in between proves to be better for remembering things than someone who crams for twice as long and then goes straight to the exam.
This means that it is better to study two hours for five days in a row than to study ten hours just before your test. It will just confuse your brain with all the new information - and you will not be able to retain much.
3. Read the paper correctly - this goes without saying, but we would like to stress on it again. As soon as you get your paper, check the number of pages and questions. If you get time to read your paper before starting to attempt it, good - do it. During this time, go through questions and make your strategy - which questions you would like to attempt first, which ones you are unsure and would like to attempt later. You can also use this time to think about answers for some MCQs, if they are present in your paper.
4. Attempt the paper in sequence - this is not a rule in any examination, but is advisable to do. You should attempt questions in sequence - be it from start to end or end to start - don’t attempt them randomly. This should be done to ensure that you have attempted every question. It also ensures that the examiner gives correct marks for every answer. Examiners also have thousands of papers to check, so do your best to make your answer sheet less confusing!
5. Move on if you are stuck - do not keep thinking about one answer. If you know it, write it. If you don’t know it, write whatever you know or the closest possible answer that you know. If you think you need time and will definitely figure out the answer if given time, then leave some space for it and come back to it at the end. But getting stuck at a question in the middle of an exam is a complete waste of time - you can attempt other questions during this time, for which you know the answers and can get valuable marks!
6. Do not discuss the paper afterward - many students do this to see if they are correct - and let us tell you - it’s of no use at all. If after discussion it is revealed that you made a mistake, then you get depressed and tensed and it hampers your preparation for the next exam. So the mistake that you did in one exam will ruin your next exam as well. So refrain from discussing your paper - what is done, is done. You can’t go back and change anything. So trust that you have given your best. Soon after finishing one exam, all your mindset should be in preparation for your next exam.
But all these tips aside, we would want to remind you that there is no substitute for good preparation. You have to study, pay attention in class, read the materials, and engage with what you are learning. All tips will be useful and work in your favor if your preparation is strong. Right preparation also gives you confidence, which is the most important thing to possess during exams!
