He nodded, listening to her story. “So it’s still a pretty new business, that’s pretty awesome! I always thought owning your own business is such an admirable thing to do, especially when you’re younger. How’s it been going so far?”

Avery smiled. “Yeah. It’s new-ish. It’s nice having somewhere that I can hire the people I want to work with. Plus I can make my own schedule. I have a 2 year old daughter and I can take her to work without someone getting pissy with me”

“Yeah, I miss the city, but I love the small town feel,” he said awkwardly. The divorce was never a pleasant subject, so he tried to get away from that. “I’m a history teacher! At the high school. It’s a fun gig. What about you? How’d you get into the vintage clothing business?”

“I don’t really miss it... Sometimes I guess but I like it. It’s like having a huge family.” She said smiling. “Highschool... Wow. Yeah. I wasn’t much fun in highschool. Most if not all my teachers hated me.” She said laughing. “Mom wanted me to go to college. Decided to be a business major. When I graduated I needed income and a house. My best friend and I had talked about it when we were freshman. My mom’s family owned the building so our rent is low. We opened a few months ago.”

“I can really go for a coffee or even hot tea. Today was brutal.” Ellie explained as she yawned.

“I guess that makes me new, then,” he shrugged. He smiled at her invitation. “I came back because…well, I wasn’t sure where else to go, I suppose. Just uh, just got finished with my divorce,” he admitted.

He started walking in the direction Avery had been previously headed towards.“See, this is what I missed about Paris. In Boston if you walked into someone they’ll probably tell you to ‘fuck off’, in Paris, they invite to walk with them. Lead the way.”

“I’m sorry about that. It must be good to get away from everything though.” She said not sure what to say. 

Avery smiled. “I lived in Baltimore until I was 13. They’d do the same thing. Or steal your bag.” She started walking towards her store. “What do you do?”

“Eh…technically? I grew up here, but I just moved back a few months ago. I guess that means I’m not new. Or maybe it does, I’m not sure. I feel new.”

“If you feel new then I think you are. What brought you back? I own the vintage clothing store on Main. I have to head back... It’s like 2 blocks if you’d like to walk with me.”

Caleb stumbled back when the woman ran into him. He caught himself, chuckling. “Whoa, what’s the hurry, there?”

“I’m so sorry. one of my employees just called with some emergency... I should’ve looked where I was going.”

“Awesome! What samples are you interested in?” Ellie asked. She studied the young woman and raised an eyebrow. “I think we have. People never really forget this red hair.” She joked. “You’re…Avery. Right? I’m Ellie.”

“I am. Nice to meet you... I think you were a grade above me...” She looked at the case. “Whatever is your favorite... and I’ll take the sprinkle cupcake and a dark chocolate muffin please.”

“No. I’m on my way back... Fucking kids... I’ll be there soon” Avery hung up the phone. “Oh... I’m sorry” She said bumping into someone.

Ellie looked up from behind the counter, “Oh, hey. What I can get you? Can I interest you in a free sample?” She asked, motioning to the baked goods.

“That’d be great... Did we go to high school together? You look familiar.”
