The slight creaking of your mattress woke you from your sleep, and while you were processing what was happening in your delirium you felt the cool air hit your skin as your partner rose from his place in your bed.
You figured he was just going to the restroom at first but when he went to your window and began trying to quietly open it you sat up, curious and a little worried.
He turned, letting out a small sigh laced with guilt.
"Sorry," he said, rubbing his neck and stepping towards the bed. He sat next to you, pushing your hair back. "I didn't mean to wake you up."
"What're you doing?" you said, hugging him and taking the covers with you, trying to gain back some of the warmth you lost earlier. He hugged you back.
"I just wanted to see the sunrise."
You moved to look at him, and he gave you a little smile. Sometimes there will be small moments like this, when you realize all the things you take for granted; all the things that can't be readily available for him. You don't ever think of him as any different than a human boy but in times like this, where he apologizes to you for wanting to see the sun come up, you remember just how wonderfully strange this all is. Lucky is the only word that could come to you.
He laughed a little before picking you up in his arms, blanket wrapped snuggly around you. He held you close and kissed your cheek.
After lifting the glass panel and slipping out into the soft blue light of oncoming dawn, he carried you to the roof and sat you down comfortably in his lap to wait.
He felt a warmth in his chest. He felt it when you took his hand in yours and it grew when he saw the blue turn to gold, watching the fresh light cascade over everything. The air felt crisp and new and he breathed it in. He felt the sun finally reach his skin and he smiled, remembering the fifteen years spent underneath it all. How lucky he was to be here, to see this, to hold you.
You turned away from the view to curl up close to his plastron. He looked to see your eyes were closed but you had a soft smile on your face. He matched it.
"Can we still sleep in?" you asked, fighting a yawn and losing. His lips met your temple in a gentle good morning kiss.
