Talia nearly flinched when she heard Avery’s voice, and she had to look up to make sure it was actually who she thought it was. She hadn’t really spoken to Avery since she’d accidentally blasted Talia with her powers, despite the fact that Talia was practically living at their house now that she was with Xavier. But she wasn’t mad whatsoever at her for that, it was an accident. They both had been through a lot after getting bitten by the basilisk. She’d noticed that her friend had been avoiding her, and she really missed her. Any of the anger and frustration she was feeling about Lydia’s birthday party instantly evaporated. “Hey,” She said softly as she set the torn up papers down and swallowed.

She looked at her old friend for a long moment. She’d real missed her, and it was aching in her chest. But... Being around Talia had been hard. Being around anyone had been hard but Talia... Talia was different. “Hey...” She hesitated before slowly saying, “Talia, I’m really sorry. I’m so sorry. I-” Her voice died in her throat. There was no excuse, no explanation.

“Avery?” Malia’s heart skipped a beat. Several beats, in fact… wait, no… her heart was straight-up racing. She’d dropped by the Frost/Volt/home of 4000 kids residence to see if Talia was around; she hadn’t expected to see Avery. Avery.

She clambered up the steps and pulled her into a hug. She was so relieved to see her outside, in the flesh, actually here. Her heart kept racing, and she could have sworn she heart Avery’s heart pick up its pace, too. “I’ve missed you. So much,” she said into the other girl’s hair, not wanting to let go.

She knew that voice. Malia cam into focus and Avery felt her heart freeze in place. “Malia.” She could hardly breathe, but her heart was pounding in her chest. Malia, Malia, Malia, Malia. She watched Malia come up the steps towards her and couldn’t move except to get to her feet. And then Malia’s arms were around her and Avery’s were around her and everything actually felt right for the first time in a long time.

She nestled her face in her shoulder, feeling as if she might cry because it was Malia. And this, right here, right now, was the most right she’d felt in months. The darkness was actually pushed back, fought back, and any thought of it was forgotten. And she could see clearly again. Her breaths were shaky as she tightened her arms around her. “I missed you too... I missed you so much.” Her voice cracked a few times during the sentence.

He wouldn’t compare the spirit or creature that wrecked havoc on Lydia’s party to his younger sister. “You might have the same abilities but you’re not like it.” His sister didn’t have malicious intentions like this new villain did. “If you want to, then you should, but only if you’re one hundred percent sure.” He said, glancing at her. He didn’t want her to jump back in if she wasn’t ready. If she needed more time to herself, he would respect that. He just wanted her to be happy. “I missed you too.” He replied, leaning his head against hers. He nodded, “I’m surviving, I’ve been through rough patches but I’m here.”

Avery looked at her brother for a long moment, filled with appreciation and gratitude. “Thank you...” She wasn’t sure what to say besides that. It felt like she was more similar to it than that. She watched him for a moment before saying, “no I... I want to... I want to be back in it. I want to help our friends.” She closed her eyes as his head leaned against hers, comforted by the presence of her brother. “Good. You better say that way. Anything you want to talk about?”

Seeing Avery look so guarded upset Lydia a bit but she didn’t blame her friend. Lydia had really hurt her, and it was going to take time for them to get back to where they once were. “Xavier told me you’ve been working on your powers. How’s that been going?” She asked, doing her best to make conversation and slowly reaching towards her apology. Those weren’t Lydia’s forte, since she hated admitting she was wrong. “I’ve been alright.” Awful, she thought to herself. But decided on keeping that inside. “Been better, been worse.” That was a lie, of course. Lydia couldn’t remember a time she had been worse. She was working on it, though.

"You still talk to Xavier?" It was hard to keep the bitterness from her tone. "Yeah I have. They're more under control. The ice especially. I kind of nailed it. But uh... I've got some hold over plants and fire too. Stuff like that. That's not too advanced. And uh I can sense emotions. Pretty strong. Its a real bitch." It was true. She hated that one. It was part of what had been tempting her to darkness. "Been better but worse?" Avery glanced at her. "It feels pretty low from here."

Sitting alone in her room in the middle of her bed with a Japanese mythology book in her lap, Kira sighed as she mindlessly flipped through the pages. Her mother had told her the story of the yuki-onna countless times throughout her childhood, but she never thought that she would face the snow woman in real life. After a few more minutes of trying to read more about this new enemy to get a better understanding, Kira shook her head and gave up, closing the book and placing it on her desk. She threw on a jacket, grabbed her compact sword, and decided to head out for a walk. It had definitely gotten colder in Beacon Hills lately, and the yuki-onna was to blame. As Kira turned onto the next street, she spotted someone familiar not too far away from her, ice coming out of her hands. “Hey,” she greeted with a small smile as she approached her friend. “Practicing your powers, I guess?”

"Mostly thinking." Avery looked at her friend for a long moment. "I uh... I'm thinking. This thing... It has powers like me form what I heard. Maybe I can do something..."

“Hey,” he said as he mumbled watching her hands, and wondering if she was any similar to their new foe. He didn’t think it would be polite to simply prod questions at the girl, and bombard her with an onslaught of assumptions that wouldn’t make much sense to anyone other than Lydia. So he simple stared at her hands, and offered her a smile. “So, I’m guessing you’re not the snow woman, but have similar powers? Does this mean you could potentially unfreeze the people she’s freezing?”

Avery gave a small smile. “Yeah, uh... I dunno... I haven’t gotten that far... I mean, I know how to freeze but I haven’t quite reached the whole unfreeze part...” Her mind flashed to when she nearly killed Talia. “I’m Avery,” she told the boy, extending her hand.

Avery looked at Lydia for a long moment. She didn't expect to see her. And so she watched her carefully, her expression guarded. It was a look she used to give many people. "Hey... I'm... I've been a llittle.." Lost. "Preoccupied." She shrugged and watched her old friend. "You?"

Xavier was just getting home from work when he spotted his sister out on the porch. He smiled at the sight of his sister. He missed hanging out with her. They lived in the same house currently but she was off doing her own thing. He was happy just that they could have a conversation now. “Hey Aves.” Xavier took a seat right next to her on the porch swing, placing the jacket that was in his hand on the side of him. “You seem to be in deep thought.”

Avery smiled softly at the sight of her brother. She'd missed him. She hesitated before looking at him. "This new thing... The one that killed people and attacked at Lydia's... Its like me? Right? With the..." She picked up a rock and froze it to show her point. "I think... Maybe it's time I help..." She sighed softly, dropping her head on her older brother's shoulder. "I missed you." They lived in the same house but she'd been.. Empty in a way. "You okay?"

As Avery sat on her porch swing, she was overwhelmed with an idea. It was a scary idea, but an idea that somehow brought Avery comfort in her time of darkness. She had something in common with this monster. Some kind of power, some link. Maybe, just maybe, that could help. She let ice spray from her hands as she stared at them. Darkness had been whispering her name, and she’d been starting to respond but maybe... Just maybe this was a sign. Maybe she could do something else, make another stand, a good stand. She hadn’t seen any of her friends in ages. She was managing to avoid Talia since freezing her in their house, hadn’t really seen Lydia since Lydia said she didn’t want to be friends, so on and so forth. She even missed a Lydia Martin party. But she just couldn’t bring herself to approach any of them. But... She looked up as a figure approached. She might not have a choice. “Hi?”

Ever since she got possessed by some evil ice spirit and tried to attack and kill most of her friends, Talia had been spending most of her time alone. She didn’t want to see anyone, in all honesty. She knew it wasn’t her who had done all of that, but that didn’t make it any less infuriating. She hated her mind being messed with, and she was still pretty pissed about the entire situation. The only way she knew how to deal with the anger was to push it to the side, and in the process it only made her moody. As she sat in the Beacon Hills Coffee Haus and did her homework, she found she just couldn’t focus. As she increasingly got frustrated, she snatched the math papers up from the table and tore them as she shook her head and sighed.

When Avery saw her friend at the coffee table, she stopped, everything in her wanting to walk back out. She had really messed up with Talia. The basilisk venom in her system had gotten her convinced that Talia was the controller (Sheriff Jones) and not Talia at all and she’d nearly frozen her to death. With a slow breath, Avery went forward, sliding into the chair opposite Talia. She’d been falling closer and closer to darkness recently, anger controlling her, sadness overwhelming her, self loathing all she could feel. “Talia... hi.”

“Yeah, I’ve been gone for two years because I was staying at this hospital.” Rory said grinning. “Hopefully she’ll be happy to see me since it’s been a while.”

“Oh wow. Are you okay?” Avery looked at him, automatically concerned. “Talia’s my friend. I’ll be more than happy to help.”

Talia woke up that morning at Xavier’s house with a shiver. She didn’t know who had turned the AC on so high, but it was practically freezing. She got out of bed and slipped on some clothes before going out into the hall and checking the thermostat, which read seventy degrees. Totally normal. She furrowed her eyebrows as the number’s on it started to go down until it was completely fried. She heard someone in the hall and turned to see Avery standing there, and she quickly held her hands up. “I swear I didn’t do it, I think your air conditioning is broken.”

She wasn’t sure what she was doing out of bed. Maybe sleep walking? But since when had she sleep walked? The sun wasn’t out so it was probably early morning? Her fingertips were frosting (her eyes going whiteish blue not that she could see it herself). Something felt wrong. and then she heard something. Speaking. A low, gravely voice “tenebris maleficus, tenebris maleficus, tenebris maleficus, tenebris maleficus, tenebrs malefi-” Avery shuddered, whipping around to face the dark shape. It was the controller, she was certain. There was the shape of a snake at his feet. “STOP IT!” she screamed, shooting ice at the figure. But then... It all stopped. She could see clearly and it wasn’t him, there was no snake, it was Talia. “I swear I didn’t do it, I think your air conditioning is broken,” she had said. Not tenebris maleficus. But you are, she thought to herself. “Talia!” she yelled, dropping to her knees beside her.

Dancing. It wasn’t something she did often, or at least went out to do. Usually she preferred to dance to something in her room alone. But she needed a distraction. So she’d had a few drinks, and was dancing on the dance floor of some club. Because every time she closed her eyes she could see the basilisk, or see her freezing her loved ones. She saw herself hurting them, killing them, helping the stupid horrible snake. She downed another shot and then another before going back to the dance floor and resuming the movements. She just wanted to drink and exhaust herself until she could sleep tonight, maybe with no nightmares for once. Her eyes caught on someone familiar and she grinned. “Hi! My friend’s here!” she announced to no one in particular, rushing over and grabbing her friend by the wrist. “Helloooo friend.”

Malia pushed the window the rest of the way open, wincing as it creaked. “This thing needs some serious WD-40,” she remarked, hoisting a leg over the windowsill and crouching down to fit inside. She swung her other leg over and hopped down from the ledge, trying not to make too much noise. Avery’s mother had at least one child under the age of 2 and Malia had been around their family enough to know that babies could be finicky sleepers. She tiptoed over to Avery’s bed and sat down next to her.

“You’re sweating,” she commented, raising a hand to tuck loose strands of Avery’s hair behind her ear. “What’s going on?” 

Avery was so relieved to see her she could kiss her. Not that she’d been thinking about that lately or anything. But she didn’t. Instead she did what she wanted to do more than kiss her, she just looked at her with a shaken up grateful look and reached out, her fingers gently touching the other girl’s cheek. She could feel Malia’s hand in her hair. 

“I.. Nightmare.” She shook her head. “They’ve been happening since the basilisk bite.” She looked at the other girl for another long moment before whispering, “You’re here...”

Nate countered back quickly with a slight smirk. “Nothing’s wrong, I feel fine. Better than ever, actually.” It wasn’t a total lie. He felt great, more powerful actually, but not for the right reasons. He was using his powers more for himself recently, and his magic was becoming darker and darker. How had Avery picked up on it?

Avery frowned slightly. “How are you doing with the.. you know, the witch stuff?” Something wasn’t right. she could feel it. “I know it’s an adjustment...” Did she ever. she hadn’t even totally adjusted herself yet.

“It’s good to be back home, and I honestly don’t want to see a hospital in a very long time. I’m looking for my sister, her name’s Talia do you know her?”

“Talia.” Avery turned at the mention of the name, looking at he boy. “You’re her brother?” She felt a small smile pull a her lips, although she couldn’t help but feel a bit of concern and distrust as well.

Xavier had been officially hired at the Beacon Hills Police Department. He needed a job but didn’t want to go far from home. He managed to get the job when he explain how terrible their cyber security was and how he could make it better. It wasn’t his dream job but he need to start making money and using the degree he worked for. He heard someone come in and didn’t see any other deputies up in front. “Hey, did you need something?”

Avery threw herself into a chair, frowning slightly as it rolled away. She used her feet to push herself back by her brother, grinning at him. “Hi. I don’t want anything but some company because I have this problem of vastly over thi-”  The chair caught on something and Avery tumbled to the floor. She rolled on her back and grinned at her brother. “Overthinking things.”
