Hello everyone! For people just discovering us, or for those of you who do know about us and would like a better summary of what’s to come, this is the right place! We are the It Lives Project, a fan team working in our free time to make the visual novel It Lives Within, the third and final book in the It Lives series.
You’re finally ready to leave your past behind and move on. But apparently, moving on means enrolling at a community college in a supernatural town overflowing with monsters and dark magic…
IT LIVES WITHIN fully released 🖤

You know, it's funny that while the entire run.tv debacle has been going on thanks to what happened with the Its Lives series, I was actually pondering another event that's recently passed by that I'm not too sure most people in the fandom might know about. For those who still play with the original Choices app, about a few days ago, Choices put out a system update that, consequentially, managed to break every single Choices APK mod that was available online.
If you, for whatever reason, don't know what I'm talking about, back in 2016, there was practically no way of acquiring diamonds in the Choices app outside of paying for them. If I remember correctly, the three diamonds a day ad watches weren't part of the original debut, so many fans took it upon themselves to dive into the game's code where they discovered that even though the keys are directly connected to a specific server that made it impossible to edit, the diamonds weren't. So, these tech savvy individuals did what they do best and modded their games to give them infinite amounts of diamonds or just make it so that the diamond counter didn't go down when you chose a premium option. They would then upload these modded apps to pirating sites or other APK sites for other fans to download.
This basically made Choices a real free to play app, unless you lacked the patience to wait four hours a day to play two chapter of a visual novel until the ads for keys basically rendered that wait hollow as well. To the many people who did not have 100 dollars to blow on numerous books, these apps were a godsend. The reason this sparked my interest (aside from my own personal experience) is because I've never seen this happen before.
I've had the Choices app since at least 2017, and I've never seen any update that the people who maintain these mods couldn't crack. More curious is that Pixelberry's official blog just so happened to put out a post talking about how their code was out of date. They, of course, frame it as an issue where the "current architecture significantly limits what's possible" in their goals, and maybe that's true. I just think it's extremely interesting that after ten years, there's a sudden concern for the game's code that coincides with a complete breakdown of these apps that literally removed the primary way in which the Choices makes money.
To tie this into an even longer rant, I genuinely don't believe that Choices' use of generative AI is what most people's problem is. I'm not saying it's not a factor; I just don't think it's the main core. Spellfyre, a game that I've been nursing for about a week and change, outsources it's art to studios that have used generative AI, likely because these companies either don't charge as much or they have only recently introduced generative AI into their process. Yet, the very same people I see getting angry at Choices' use of GenAI in their projects have no problem playing and posting about Spellfyre.
Now, this is not a place of shaming; hypocrisy doesn't necessarily make you wrong. Instead, I think it shows that whatever is going on between the fanbase and Pixelberry Studios is much deeper than the generative AI debates. Frankly, I think the actual issue here is that the Choices app has been growing a lot more hostile to its players, and it's been doing so in a very short amount of time.
When Pixelberry made a post on their blog calling their business model "unsustainable," I think they're being a little gracious with themselves. I would not be surprised if Choices never made a profit ever. I remember the day where Choices decided to change the diamond output for ads from 3 to 100, and I thought to myself "Oh, they're planning on discarding this thing soon." This is why when Choices made the decision to roll back those 100 gems, I wasn't surprised. What I was surprised by was them cutting it down to ten and expecting nobody to say anything.
An average chapter of Choices typically contains a special dress option (25), a special hangout event that's either to give the player an advantage in a later scene or just to pad the time (15-20), and a love interest oriented hangout scene (20). There are exceptions to this rule like a smut-oriented diamond choice costing 30 diamonds (and maybe 20 in books that are more erotica oriented) or the dreaded wedding books that are notoriously expensive. That said, on average, a player can look to spend about 60-80 diamonds a chapter.
Choices did not need to cut the diamonds that low, and it's a really bad look that they did. I truly believe that if they just halved the 100 diamonds a day to about 50, players probably wouldn't have felt so disoriented, even though Choices would still be making a profit. To cut it down to ten was a deliberate choice not just to make diamond farming a little less unfair to the corporation, but to actively frustrate the more stubborn players into just giving up on their hoarding.
The fact that Choices also stopped doing diamond rush events based on playing books or spending on premium choices didn't help either. Neither did getting rid of book passes or the ability to farm diamonds through replaying old books. These were avenues for players to not only regularly engage with the app, but also feel rewarded for doing so. The decision to remove all of these options at once was deeply jarring and cruel. At least those who follow Pixelberry's official accounts got some form of a head-ups about the diamonds; they just removed the other stuff and fucked off.
Prior to that, the shift in book genres had also been creating a lot of tension in the fanbase. Regardless of your opinions on Choices' long standing history of prioritizing romance and then eventually erotica thanks in part to the success of The Nanny Affair (though I would argue that Bloodbound walked so that series could take off sprinting), the reality is that there were a lot of complaints from fans about this that persist to this day, and those complaint largely fell on deaf ears.
The biggest nail in the coffin, to me at least, was the creation of the VIP service. While this was an additional way of making money for the app that went beyond single purchases of keys or diamonds, the decision to include VIP books in the line up for special content increased production pressure on an already swamped work environment as well likely created complaints within fan spaces, which why I think they stopped making VIP exclusive books and shifted to early access books. This has had a tremendous effect on the fandom because now the communal aspect of playing these serialized chapters as they were released have been broken, killing fan discussions due to the fear of spoilers. This whole thing has been amusing to me because the unlimited keys and extra diamond rewards from the package are pretty good on their own; they didn't need to add that extra pressure.
Ever since this acquisition (and honestly even before), Pixelberry has been quietly rolling back a lot of their goodwill gestures to the fandom, likely under the impression that these gestures haven't given enough back for them to continue. The fact that Choices is still, without a doubt, one of the most professional iterations of these types of game has also granted it a monopoly that only Romance Club has seemingly made in a crack in, though we'll see where Spellfyre goes in the future.
What Pixelberry, or rather this new company head, needs to understand is that Choices is a live service game. These types of games are built on a deeply tenuous relationship between fan and developer entirely based on a give and take dynamic. Perhaps Choices felt like the fans were doing much taking, so instead of incentivizing them to do so through small, incremental changes, they just gave up.
When fans feel as if they are simply bags of disposable income in the eyes of the developers, it actually turns them more stubborn and spiteful. I've never bought a pack of diamonds in my life. The two times I did, it was my sister footing a birthday bill. Trying to squeeze money out of those who are determined not to spend any never results in those groups actually forking over cash. They just leave or turn to alternative ways to cheat you. It is what it is. You just have to get over it as a business rather than trying to irritate them into submission and turning away audiences that were actually giving you money.
The whole GenAI thing is just an extension of this need to actually make money on an app that, again, I don't think has ever made money nor really could never make money running the same way that it did in 2016, which was an absurdly different time and economy. And it's also serves as an extension with fan frustration that Choices really just views them as faceless wallets. That fact that there are obvious obfuscation going on here in what is being told to us and what is happening only makes things worse.
If the cost of making books was so high, why are you remaking older books where all you do is slap on a new visual art change that forces you to spend time replacing all of the visual code on a game that nobody was complaining about, unless it was to use these books as testing dummies for a new art style shift?
If the the cost of making these books was so high, why are there just as many if not even more books released in 2025 than there were in 2019? Clearly, they can't cost that much otherwise there would've been some form of a production slowdown, whether that would be putting books on hiatus, making books with a short chapter span like the Haunting of Briar Manor, or simply reducing the amount of projects the studio is taking on at a given time?
If the the cost of making these books was so high, why are you spending extra time and money on side projects in tandem with release books, especially knowing that these shows will never be popular among fans because the entire selling point of your app has always been interactive visual novels?
Again, I believe Choices when they say their former way of life is unsustainable these days. What I don't believe is that they actually care about fixing that; in fact, I believe they're more interested in short-term cheap solutions that basically amount to the "special magic bandage" my Kindergarten teacher gave me when I trip on a sidewalk during recess and left 3/4 of my skin on the hot pavement of a basketball court. How am I supposed to engage with you as a consumer when you have shown an active disdain/or distrust in me and frankly your own business model?
I forgot what the conclusion of this post was supposed to be, so I guess it's just a lengthy prose with an unsatisfying ending that really amounts to nothing. Sort of like a Choices book. The only difference is that I can say I wrote this myself, and people would actually believe me.
Like many of you, I woke up to the AI slop It Lives Within "TV show" on the Choices app. Having spent thousands (no joke) of loving hours on the fan-made It Lives Within, I admit it felt like a bit of a kick to the gut, especially since I'd stayed up until 2 AM the night before, meticulously working on improving the programming of textbox animations for the updated version of the game.
But at the end of the day, the people are what own stories. It doesn't matter what PB puts out, especially when it so blatantly disrespects a series we all hold close to our hearts. We can choose what to support, what to value, and what to be our true version of these stories.
As such, I wanted to provide an update for "It Lives Within: The Obsidian Cut." We are working extremely hard to finish rewrites, and I apologize it's taking so long - but real work takes time. We take so long because we don't use AI to do our work for us. Our testers have found hundreds of bugs, which have been corrected. I'm currently working on some rewrites for chapters 21-22, and once that's finished, I'm going to play from start to finish with different MCs to include more complete personality variants for your MC.
While our game was highly beloved (which I am still so wholly grateful for three years after the final episode aired), I know some of you tried the original version and decided it wasn't for you. Others maybe never heard of it. But, with the news of AI It Lives Within dropping today, I just wanted to invite everyone to give our fan version a chance. If you tried it before and gave up, or haven't played it yet, I recommend waiting until Obsidian airs to experience that version for the first time. And if you did play the original, stick around! You'll love Obsidian when it airs. All of our testers are highly enjoying it and say that it improves on the story with every change, while still be the story they knew and love.
AI It Lives Within is frustrating and offensive, but ultimately, we never needed their blessing, and neither do you. Our story started small, with a team that never made any money. Everything was done out of passion and love for this series and these characters, and we were and still are, devoted to creating truly player-drive stories where your choices matter. A LOT. That passion is something that can never be generated in any machine. Stories from the heart speak to the heart, "canon" or not, and what really matters is how theses stories impact and inspire us.

"Gabe Adalhard might not be entirely human" foreshadowing moments.
The most obvious is probably the football catch scene, but the two that actually catch my eye now is 1) Gabe being strong enough to actually injure/or knock Cas out with nothing but a stick and 2) Gabe not staying with MC despite knowing that vampires would be looking for them, which contrasts greatly to their earlier over-protectiveness.
So, fun fact, I got curious about this moment where Gabe pulls MC into their lap. Initially, I thought it was the result of having higher romance points with Gabe whenever I played, so I went to look at a Cas route playthrough on YouTube. Turns out even if you pick Cas only options, Gabe still pulls this trick on the final lap around. Gabe being possessive? Possibly, but more importantly Gabe stepping in to stop MC from making "the wrong choice."
I can't do more than nine to ten photos per post, so I just want to note that there's a moment where Gabe states that that "some rules are worth breaking" in regards to blatantly cheating here. Obvious foreshadowing aside, it does establish Gabe's willingness to do whatever they feel it takes to keep MC (and later Cas) safe, including ignoring their loved one's personal autonomy. The turning scene and the later stuff with the grimoire in Book Three are extensions of this.
Crimson Beech High's game of musical chairs (ft. Cas Harlow's running commentary on the very obvious psychosexual element to all of this).
The dehumanization of MC is probably at its more explicit here, at least as far as Cas and Gabe's treatment of them goes. The strange connection between Cas referring to MC as Gabe's "pet," and how the musical chair scene oscillates them between being a hunter looking for the "best meal" and a lapdog to be pawed at/or comforted by Cas and Gabe. Meanwhile, both of the fools in the chair are trying (one much harder than the other, mind you) to play passive and failing miserably each time they have the opportunity to assert little shows of dominance whether it's Cas holding MC's waist too tightly, or Gabe just forgoing the rules completely and dragging MC into theirs, ironically proving that MC is, despite their earlier claim, a very easy catch.
Something about Cas, completely stone-face, calling Astoria "Principal Yao" here paired with shit-eating grin after she tells them to come to her office, especially knowing their actual relationship outside of the school. It's pretty obvious that Astoria probably told Cas to call her that to keep up appearances, but it's so obvious that they are clearly close from the casual way which Cas greets her to Astoria's willingness to get physical with Cas in a way that teachers are clearly not allowed to do. It's, like, the bare minimum of pretending.
Gabe's Salvatore-esque introduction. If you pick the non-romantic option of "you must be one of the popular kids, obviously," MC indirectly calls Gabe "golden girl/golden boy" before Cas gets their first chance to do so. Gabe's stupid little grin at MC doing this is haunting me in a way I cannot find the words to express.
I don't think Terri really comprehends the danger of snooping around the active crime scene of a serial killer. I don't necessarily want to demean her, but it's really feels like this is little game: showing up when everybody's gone and acting out a fantasy of being an investigative journalist. She's so detached from the horror of it all. I assume this is because of the nature of her job and the fact that she's only ever heard of it through newspaper clippings at this point. It comes across like she's just seeking out some form of excitement and curiosity in her life before that scene in chapter two where she has to examine the young woman tore to shreds and has a sudden moment of clarity about how awful this all is. Weirdo Prometheus heroine, you fascinate me.
The way MC talks to and about Terri never ceases to entertain me either. While the player has the option to say that MC lecturing Terri is a new development, there are a lot of other interactions between the two that imply Terri often just does things with little recourse to how it might affect MC. What amuses me as well is what MC's specifically says when they're scolding Terri. They don't even bother with the "Hey mom, it's a bad idea to go where a serial killer is killing people because you might be killed." Instead, they immediately hit Terri with, "You could get fired, and I don't want this move to be for nothing."
It's one of the few subtle implications that MC was not very happy about the idea of moving to Crimson Beech (the second being the joke about not trying to get murder their first day back, which the monkey paws curls), and it reveals a slightly short-sighted and self-centered edge to MC. The long winded suffering of the child-spouse.
I always forget that Immortal Desires starts with the Supreme One as the first character that appears. Honestly, not the best writing choice. It reminds me of that video from CJtheX where they argue that Tangled would have benefited greatly from cutting out the introduction where Mother Gothel is shown to have been the one to steal away the princess. Like, the knowledge that the Supreme One is definitely the person behind the murders robs a lot of possible mystery, then again there's not a lot of time dedicated to the murders to begin with.
Also, Creations can talk. I must've forgotten that they were, like, cognizant abominations. Honestly, I can't tell if that makes me more uncomfortable with them or less.
My finals were last week and I'm going to be on extended break from work soon, so I'm attempting a proper re-read of ID. Before that even happens though, I just want to say that I love the main story of ID being tagged as "vampire, high school, romance" and Mortal Desires being tagged as "vampire, high school, thriller." I know that's right.
In lieu of the BOTC Book 2, for useful/fun character development questions for couples: 22 (what does sex mean for them), 27 (they have to apologize to their partner, is it difficult for them), and 32 (how do their friends react to finding out they're a couple). For Devi specifically, number 18 (do they ask for support/care after a traumatic experience, or do they isolate themselves). (averyrealhumanunfortunately)
thank you for the ask <3

22. what does sex mean for them? Socially, religiously, what attitudes are they bringing with them? Is “virginity” something they care about? Do they want sexual experiences to occur within a certain “level” of relationship, or does that not really matter so much to them?
Devi: would not feel comfortable having sex until they know that person well and feel comfortable with them. they don't have any religious associations with sex and does not care about virginity. Devi went through a phase where they were really uncomfortable in their body after her family was attacked, and they're unsure if its dysphoria or trauma. Learning boxing and doing dance and stuff helped them feel better, but after turning they feel uncomfortable again. It takes a few months after their turning to feel okay, and it helps that Gabe and Cas were there to help. Devi trusts them the most, so when it comes to having sex with them specifically, they feel comfortable.
Gabe: prior to his turning he grew up in a religious household and virginity was important to him, he believed in not having sex before marriage. The longer he lives, the less religious he becomes, and by the time he meets Devi, he isn't really religious at all (not that theres anything wrong with it, this is just Gabe's experience). Similar to Devi, he wouldn't want to do it with someone unless he felt really comfortable with them, and virginity isn't really a problem. Gabe is a bit shy when it comes to sex, and he would not enjoy it unless he was close to that person. For him, sex is something you do with someone you love.
Cas: when he was newly turned, he had a lot of flings with different people. it was kind of a coping mechanism to him, like a way to feel more in control of his vampire body. because as much as he says he loves being a vampire, you can't deny that becoming a whole different species will take a toll on your body. After a while, having these flings became tiring to him. It was draining to be with all these people, and sex isn't really a bandaid for your feelings, so for many years he stopped having sex entirely.
27. they have to apologize to their partner. Is this difficult for them? How do they approach it?
Devi: they can be pretty stubborn, so it depends on the situation. if they got into an argument, they might take a while to apologize. If they upset their partner or unintentionally crossed a boundary or something like that, she's quick to apologize. Basically, they never want to make someone uncomfortable with their actions, so if that happens she'll make sure to apologize. But if its an argument and they're angry and think they're in the right, they won't apologize until they've fully calmed down.
Gabe: would apologize easily. He doesn't like fighting with his partners and tends to avoid conflict, so sometimes he may apologize just to avoid an argument. the only person he really argues with is Cas, and in that case he's not likely to apologize so easily. when Gas argue, unless one of them is genuinely very hurt and upset, they wouldn't really apologize. they're more like asian parents when they're not mad at you anymore after an argument and they cut fruit or make food for you lol. either that or a very awkward "i'm sorry or whatever"
Cas: is very stubborn, so sometimes even when he realizes he's wrong he might not apologize, unless it was a very intense and emotional argument. despite his stubbornness, I also think he's very self aware, so if he realizes something he did was fucked up, he will honestly apologize (i.e. in b2 when he took mc into town and they all ended up getting branded).
32. how do their friends react to finding out they’re a couple? Do they have lots of mutual friends? Did their friends know, perhaps before they themselves did?
to be honest, they all have mutual friends for the most part, which can be messy if they every get in an argument etc and need someone to talk to outside of the relationship.
Human friends: they all knew something was going on between Gabe and Devi, so they weren't really surprised and were really happy for them. They were especially happy for Gabe, because they've seen him avoid romance entirely until Devi came around, and they could see him overworking himself occasionally with the amount of responsibilities he would take on (which was his way of coping and avoiding thinking about being a vampire). Hanging out with Devi and Cas slowly helps him accept his vampirism, so the need for this coping mechanism isn't really necessary. also their school is blown up like 3 times so honestly who even is doing school activities this point?
they also knew Devi and Cas liked each other, so although the concept of polyamoury was a bit strange to them, they accepted it. they don't really like Cas or get to know him until b3, but they respect Devi's decision even if they don't understand it. for them, as long as all three of them are okay with it, its fine.
what was truly surprising was Gabe and Cas dating. by the time that happens, they've gotten used to Cas and don't really dislike him as much anymore, but considering how these two were always at each others throats, it was surprising to see them together. opposites attract, I guess? but ultimately, they're happy as long as everyone involved his happy.
Clements: naturally, they hate Cas for being a Venandi, so although the support Devi and Gabe's relationship, its definitely something they'll gossip about amongst themselves. they judge the three of them a lot for being in a poly relationship, but they never show it in front of them. in front of the trio, they're very supportive. it's actually a bit pretentions, because the only reason they pretend to be supportive is to maintain their moral superiority over the Venandis.
Venandis: they never supported Cas when he hung out with Devi when she was a human. they actually have conflicting feelings towards her. they hated her as a human, but almost overnight she became a hero and became a vampire. they went from being a representation of everything they hated (human, 'weak', someone who could potentially threaten their safecty and secrecy) to another one of them. you could argue that they all were also humans once, but when they were human, usually one of the coven members would advocate for their turning and the elders would decide. for Devi, everyone hated them. no one consented to their turning. so even after Devi and Cas' relationship goes from human/vampire to vampire/vampire, they all have mixed feelings.
similar to the Clements however, they hate anyone from the other coven, so they don't like Gabe. the Venandis would be more open to polyamory than the Clements, but since it's Devi and Gabe, they hate it and instead make unwanted remarks (like scott's ball and chain thing in b2).
at the end of the day, neither coven truly cares about their relationship.
Seth: genuinely happy for the three of them. he isn't very surprised about Gas, because out of all of their friends, he's the closest to Cas and could see how Cas' feelings towards Gabe changed over time. He's very observant and a very good friend to Cas (and vice versa) and also becomes good friends of Devi and Gabe, so he's probably the most accepting of them out of everyone.
18. They’re going through something incredibly difficult—perhaps they’re very sick, have lost a loved one, or have gone through a traumatic event. Do they ask for or accept support and care from their partner, or try to isolate themselves?
Devi does not ask for help. they're someone who will deal with everything themselves and isolate themself when grieving or going through something traumatic. unless someone really goes out of their way to be there for her (like her mom or priya), she will not easily accept help. they never want to feel like a burden on another person, and they don't expect people to care to help.
when Devi's family died, they stopped speaking and isolated themself for weeks, literally would not leave their room. they started speaking again because of their mom, and they started going out again because of priya. if she had it her way, she wouldn't have left their room ever.
