Remember to tag your content with #RoDAW and tag this blog! If we don’t reblog your post within 24 hours, feel free to shoot one of the mods a message, and we’ll get on it.
Lastly, we invite you to join us on Thursday, August 26th for send-off discord server where we will reminisce about Ride or Die as a book and the past RoDAW events as a whole! We’ll release the invite link on the date.
There has been a lot of beautiful art, commentary, and stories written about Colt and the Icarus reference in this fandom and I appreciate each and every one of them. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the poetry of it all, and have come to the conclusion that Teppei was reflecting on himself more than he was on Colt.
I believe that the Icarus reference was about Teppei, not in the sense that Teppei is Icarus (I still believe that is Colt), but that he is seeing himself in Icarus’s father, Daedalus.
Daedalus was an expert craftsman that was as renown for his inventions as he was for the destruction they often caused. He cared for his creations above all else and considered them his family. Teppei shares this mindset with his devotion to the MPC, but, like Daedalus, his priorities shift over time.
By the time Daedalus fathered Icarus, he had already seen the depths he would go to in order to preserve his legacy as the expert craftsman around when he pushed his nephew to his death. Because of this he strives to keep Icarus as far from his work as possible to save him from himself and the life he had created. Again, this mirrors Teppei’s attitude towards Colt to a T.
The crew isn’t in a good position when we meet them. They are under the Brotherhood’s thumb and many of the members have no other option but to follow where Teppei leads. I think Teppei knows he has mishandled the crew and has been around long enough to see what this kind of life does to people. The Brotherhood debacle seems to be the event that has really solidified Teppei’s desire to keep Colt away from the LA underground.
Keeping Icarus at arm’s length didn’t work out too well for Daedalus either. Icarus resented his father throughout his life for his obvious affection for his creations, affection that seemed to eclipse any he had for his own son. This resentment came to a boiling point with the creation of the Minotaur. Likewise, Colt only grew more resentful of his father for keeping him out of his life and a legacy that should have rightfully been his. The distance he created could arguably be one of the reasons Colt’s plan wasn’t ready; he just didn’t have the experience to draw from that he desperately needed to take down the Brotherhood.
Some iterations of the Icarus story say that Daedalus and Icarus each made their own wings for their escape, and, due to never learning to craft like his father, Icarus’s wings were wildly subpar. Daedalus vowed to give Icarus his own expertly crafted wings to give him the best shot at survival but was unable to as they were forced to make a hasty escape.
I like to think that Teppei was thinking about this part of the story. The vault plan was their wings that they were going to use to escape, but Teppei made sure he would be able to take on the weakness of the plan by sacrificing himself. And he was successful.
People often quote that Icarus was supposed to stay away from the sun but his father also warned not to go too low into the sea. Either would be perilous. I think this is why Teppei let Colt go through with the plan. Running would have been them landing in the water.
When Teppei is staring up at the Icarus painting I don’t think he is imagining Colt falling. I think he is thinking of where Daedalus messed up and adjusting his own plan. I think this is the moment he planned his sacrifice.
