no big deal ... just thinking about how similar Ethan's reactions are in MI3 and MI5 when he discovers that someone he loves actually loves him back

that's Ethan "I swear, your life will always matter more to me than my own" Hunt being forced to confront the idea that other people care about him in the same way, even when he's made mistakes (lied about his spy career or disappeared for six months)

this is Julia and Benji stepping up to put themselves as risk, to save Ethan, and he doesn't know what to do when someone plays this uno reverse card on him

or something - whatever! - I actually barely care about this at all

Gosh I just watched Dead Reconing again for the costume analysis but I realized...Benji was so slowly but definitely sliding into a terrible mental collapse towards the end of the film

Starting from the non-existent bomb in the airport that was targeted almost entirely at him, then hearing the Entity using HIS VOICE that Ethan trusted without a second of doubt to lead Ethan into the dead end, and then losing Ilsa

He looked so tired and heartbreaking after, his voice was so low as if he could barely make the sounds,but there is literally no time to do anything about it, and Ethan is also too deep and fresh in the trauma to talk to anyone to deal with it

So of course when the plan of getting on the train goes wrong he would feel so powerless and frustrated at himself for not being able to help Ethan in the way he thinks he should have, now I kind of understand the abandoned plot of Benji having a mental collapse during that sequence and had to get out of the car

But I think it still happened, just not on screen, the very last look of him is so on edge and they are on their own after that

There's just so much pain and guilt and grief and rage and sheer will burning in him, those burn fiercely but not for long, he's going to burn out and collapse very soon if they don't stop and really resolve this, to figure out what it all means to both of them

There's definitely something happened after this and before Final Reconing because in FR he was so... resolved and sharp and determined, almost crystal clear, it's like he came to a realization and made a decision somewhere somehow that makes him a completely different person compared to the end of DR

I'm half raged and half happy that we will never get the chance to know what actually happened in that period, raged because it's such an important turn in the character arc, but happy because then it is entirely left to our own imagination about what happened there and I do like things when they are not spoken but you know it is there...

Remember - Ethan is looking at Benji here. He doesn’t know Benji is hurt. All he knows is he doesn’t want to leave him. It’s tearing him apart to leave him. He wants to stay. But Benji is telling him to go and it’s been many years of instinctively doing anything Benji asks.

But leaving him feels like ripping his soul from his body and laying it down at Benji’s feet.

All he can do is the shoulder touch - that old link between them. But this time Benji hangs on - this time their slide together and apart. This time it’s a promise from Ethan for more later.

Paris is a perfect benthan daughter. She has Ethan's profound ability to kick ass and then lose the fight and Benji's panicked eyes while doing something extremely vital to do mission.

let's talk about how benji was whisked directly from the field exam into Mission Improvisational aka The One Where Everything Goes Wrong and that was literally his only exposure to ethan besides the time when he called from china for like 3 minutes frantically begging benji to help interpol's most wanted and yet flash forward to rogue nation he's lying on polygraphs on the regular for him. im going crazy

i do think a bit about the tragedy of it, how benji and ethan are truly the only ones left who know what it's like

brandt and jane and donloe and julia all got out - or retired - or are back behind a desk

hunley was there for years and died

ilsa was there for eightish years and died

luther was there for thirtyish years and died

grace and degas and paris are comparatively so fresh and so new - degas was still in high school when the kremlin was bombed in 2011 ffs

and only benji and ethan are left with the years upon years of the weight of it, the constant threat of nuclear annihilation, the constant threat of the end of the world

and truly, no one else knows the weight of what they've lost and the amount of people they've had to grieve

it must be very hard

I was mad that Paris didn't get to kill Gabriel at first because I read it as her being sidelined but then I realized that Paris's character development was the epitome of going from "I would kill for you" to "I would save people for you", that built up to her saving Benji and then protecting him, after her many years of being an assassin. She wasn't killing for her friends anymore, she was saving people for them.
