poe enjoyed the few days off he got during the school year, they weren't that common. spending a day with his husband this early in the semester was always nice. but whenever the school year started it meant that poe was usually out of the house until at least five or six pm if not nine on the nights when he had a late class. which meant that he couldn't really cook as much as he wanted to.
avi had volunteered to cook more often but he also wanted to know how to cook more korean dishes. so since poe had some free time today he'd agreed to teach his husband how to make haemul jjampong. gathering the ingredients had been an interesting experience due to avi constantly remarking about how expensive the produce was. poe had just laughed at his husband's incredulity as the prices weren't that surprising for him.
"we're going to pre-heat the wok until it smokes a little bit." poe explained as he put the correct utensil on the stove turning one of the burners on a low heat. "as soon as it heats up pull it off the heat for a second so we can add the oil, chili flakes, garlic, ginger and green onion." he said making sure they had all their ingredients ready as he spoke.
"careful with the chili flakes when you add them, we want it to be spicy jjampong not inedible jjampong" poe added teasingly. he knew very well that his husband was a good cook but he couldn't help the urge to poke just a little bit fun at him.
avi still isn't used to this new schedule of his. working largely from home in a completely foreign country has been strange, per say, but not necessarily in a bad way. it's just... different. back in america, he got out of the house more. he attended conventions to meet fans of his work, he recorded vocals in various studios, he had meetings with his agent about new projectsβhe was always doing something. he's a new yorker, after all. fast-paced is his style, and he lived for the hustle of it all, too.
here in korea, basically all of his work operates out of his home, and though it's a beautiful home, he sometimes get tired of being there. whenever poe's around, it's easier for him to appreciate their new environment more, but as he's often alone, he finds himself restless. going on morning jogs and visiting local cafΓ©s scratch the itch a little bit, but ultimately, he's still adjusting to slowing down a little. it's not easy, but it also isn't impossible. he just hopes he acclimates sooner rather than later.
today's a good day, though. he loves whenever he can spend one-on-one time with his husband. the quality time is important to him, and the fact that they're cooking together makes it all the more special. the two of them have always had a good time in the kitchen. gazing up at poe, he listens to him speak and nods along; overseeing the mis en place arranged before them. "all this sounds great!" he notes, then glares at his sweetheart's quip, playfully rolling his eyes.
"watch it, you..." with that, he motions his hand over to place on poe's hip; giving it a firm squeeze. "you look so good right now... i'm trying really hard not to get distracted during this, but know that, if i fuck up, it's your fault. you're pullin' all my attention away." his pining for physical affection is a loud and clear indicator of his recent loneliness. he'll admit to that. somehow, it was easier whenever they were both extremely busy. he had more shit going on and wasn't just... home.
turning his head, he notices that the wok starts to smoke, and as instructed, he motions to follow the next steps; doing so carefully to ensure that they're done with intent and ease. the sizzle of everything is like music to his hears, and the scent of it makes his stomach roar with hunger.
"fuck. the food's so good here. it's weird that i'd never really had a ton of korean food before. if it were up to me, this would be everywhere." grinning, he turns toward his husband; gesturing his head toward the food, but keeping his eyes locked on him. "what's next? i'm getting impatient."
