North American RA-5C Vigilante, specifically BuNo 156628 of Reconnaissance Heavy Attack Squadron 9 (RVAH-9) "Hoot Owls".The aircraft was photographed circa 1976 while assigned to Carrier Air Wing 8 (CVW-8) aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN-68). The RA-5C was a high-speed reconnaissance variant of the original A-5 nuclear strike bomber, featuring specialized sensors and cameras for intelligence gathering. These aircraft were among the largest to operate from Navy carriers, powered by two General Electric J79 afterburning turbojet engines.

RF-84F Thunderflash: A reconnaissance variant of the F-84, which became an unwanted stepchild as a fighter because the F-86 was a masterpiece, utilizing its range by equipping the nose with six cameras. Ah, so that's what Thunderflash means... Photo reconnaissance is one of the original missions of military aircraft.

Did you know the B-58 was powered by the General Electric J79, the same engine that powered the F-4? But while the Phantom made do with two, the Hustler packed four of them! Here they are lined up at Carswell AFB in 1962: the heyday of the speed as protection philosophy.
