A Vought F4U-4B Corsair of Fighter Squadron 113 (VF-113) (the "Stingers") flies over UN ships off Incheon, Korea, on 15 September 1950. VF-113 was assigned to Carrier Air Group Eleven aboard the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea. The battleship USS Missouri is visible 👇 below

Grumman F6F-5K Hellcat, US Navy, USS Boxer (CV-21), August 1952, Official U.S. Navy photograph
Grumman F6F-5K Hellcat drones are launched from the port catapult of the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Boxer (CV-21) during the Korean War in August 1952. The F6F-5Ks were used as guided "missiles" and were guided by Douglas AD-2D Skyraider drone control planes. This totally bodacious Hellcat drone launch shows the innovative (if limited) use of WWII-era fighters in the Korean War!

"Ted Williams got hit on one of his first missions.
He was streaming smoke and fire from the engine, which in a Panther usually signalled an explosion that would blow the tail off.
Williams bellied in at 150 mph or more, slid up the runway for 2000 feet, came to a stop, jumped out of the cockpit, off
the wing, ran until he was out of danger, turned around and stood there watching the plane burn on the runway."
John Glenn at K3, Korea.
Oh … could he fly an airplane.
"John Glenn?
Absolutely fearless.
The best I ever saw.
It was an honor to fly with him.
This was a man destined for something great;
It was an intuitive feeling I had."
Captain Ted Williams.

His skipper grounded Ted after that belly landing.
Furious, Williams asked why he was grounded. It wasn't his fault he took ground fire.
His skipper said to him, "Because, if something happens to you here and you get killed I can never go back to the US!"
