The situation I have described is music and artistic influence on an education. This topic is important to me because I have had to listen to dozens of others (primarily middle aged adults) tell me that my time spent playing an instrument or practicing art forms is impeding my school work and is a “waste of time”. I believe the opposite is true, that the arts have a positive impact of student achievement, academic and social. On a larger scale, this affects the arts in society as a whole. By ignoring the value of music at a young age we are teaching the future generations that art is worthless and by extension so is self expression and individuality. If we remove these aspects of expression and work from our community we risk losing parts of humanity, and can leave doors open for unsavory paths. By having a hole left in musics place, I worry community members will resort to less contribution methods that are not have a good impact on society. For now, most people have ignored arguments against the arts, but that isn’t enough. By staying passive on this issue we are allowing the arts to be stripped away piece by piece. It is time to do more.
