I saw the other ask about madd + paranoia about others hearing your thoughts and it was comforting to see that it happens to other people too. I sometimes (often) daydream about disturbing or embarrassing things, so daydreaming can become really anxiety-inducing when a part of me is utterly convinced that others around me can hear my thoughts, like I’m broadcasting them (since daydreams feel just as concrete as the words I speak aloud it makes a weird kind of sense that others can hear/see them)

one of the torturous things (there are a few) about MaDD, is not being able to daydream for days/ not being able to get in that right mindset or find a scenario ……. it can be so emotionally/ mentally painful.

absolutely nothing compares to the paranoia and anxiety and self-doubt that come with being caught daydreaming (like when you’re dreaming LOUDLY- arm movements, pacing, mouthing etc.) and people making fun of you and telling you to stop and it hurts and it is so scary because madd is something that can be so freakin personal and embarrasing

The Museum of Us

Hi! I wrote a YA novel about a girl with maladaptive daydreaming. It’s called The Museum of Us. It’s the story of a girl who’s in love with her imaginary best friend.

The book is coming out from Random House on June 26th, but I have an extra ARC I’d really like to get into the hands of someone in the madd community. Is there anyone here who might like it?

Daydreamers of the ‘Third Kind’ study!

From the MD Research Lab website run by Eli Somer:

We now wish to shed light on non-distressful variant of immersive daydreaming.

We aim to study how daydreaming is related to emotional understanding and creativity and also how do immersive (but not distressed or maladaptive) daydreamers differ from maladaptive daydreamers. Your participation could help to identify the potential benefits of immersive daydreaming and contribute to developing strategies for managing maladaptive daydreaming.

We are looking for participants to contribute to this research. The only requirements are that you are a fluent speaker of English and over 18 years of age. If you would like to help, we ask that you complete an online multiple-choice survey which will take approximately 20 minutes. Your responses will be anonymous, and we do not ask for any detailed information about the content of your daydreams.

We would like to compare your answers to those who do not experience immersive daydreams. If possible, please share the survey with any family or friends who might also be eligible and willing to participate.

Am I the only one who doesn’t really like talking about their paras to people they know in real life? Online people I do it all the time, but people I really know… it’s just so deeply personal and I have such an emotional connection with them, somehow talking about them to other people feels like I’m revealing some hugely deep part of myself.

MaDD and Paranoia

This might just be me, but I’ve seen a couple of other people mention it so I thought it might be worth asking: 

Does anybody else feel that they have paranoia linked to their MaDD? 

Worry that people may be able to read your mind, or that someone might be watching you pace through your webcam, or that you can’t keep a diary because someone will go through it. Anyone else?

What is the biggest difference between you and your paraself?

Mine is probably my paraself has a lot more confidence and deals with traumatic events much better then I do.

speaking of facial expressions and reactions, does anyone else do that? when i see Dr. Somer and other folks talking about maladaptive daydreaming they always mention repetitive motions, like pacing or rocking, but that type of thing wasn’t always feasible for me to do. so, like, if i was around family or, like, in public, it’d just be me staring at nothing going through a fantasy in my head, but the moment i’d be alone, even just running to use the restroom, i’d catch myself speaking out loud and replying to someone in the fantasy, usually just under my breath but sometimes i do catch myself, like, exclaiming.
