The gods slumber all but unaware of a new doctrine forged from bitten lips and blood-soaked tongues. Had the dual chord not strummed as one to weave an inextricable fate, then the crimson-drawn promise would align the paths. A pact writ in red streaks and unfurling without caution; new hymnals and prayers undulating through ichor conjured promises to claim pieces of another unnamed in reverence. To quote @avrenn, she’s very much giving “she joins me, begrudgingly, gets a drink only, no food. She vaguely insults me and ominously comments that I should avoid wearing blue for the coming week, especially on a Friday. She leaves me with the bill. I never see her again.” Which, maybe true although she's likely trying to pull one over on you, and I think on those vibes alone, I’d be pretty intimidated irl? But! I believe Hazriel gives some killer straightforward cutthroat advice if you need it (plus, she does enjoy fancy meals + desserts), and for that, I’d be willing to hang out and do dinner dates. I can’t imagine we'd get along very well in the long run, though - I could certainly picture us getting on each others’ nerves in some ways!

so. you got worse. and i'm not entirely sure i can blame you for it. maybe it was in you all along, hidden and waiting, or maybe someone planted it in you and watched it grow. either way, it's there now and you hold it in your fist like a second heart - this blood, this hunger, this thrill of having teeth and using them. perhaps you are right to. you are a mirror for the hardness of the world, and a mirror that we could all stand to look in more often. it's hard to watch the bleeding bring about more blood, but it is undeniable that you are very good at wounding.

Avren hadn't slept. The winds kept him up, as did the eerie creaks and groans of the mansion settling. He heard footsteps down the halls, but when he looked, nobody was there. Quick-footed maids, Avren thought, and didn't dwell on the fact that he didn't quite believe it, despite his mind supposedly being made up.

After the fourth or fifth time his eyes opened, irritated at a specific type of tapping from an unknown source, he kicked himself up from bed to seek it out. He trusted his eyes in the dark, slinking down the halls with silent bare feet as he went in nothing but his sleepclothes and a dagger in his hand.

His ear twitched. There, the tapping again, to the left. He veered down the corridor, more annoyed than ever, and nearly bounded into a figure standing right after the corner. He leapt back, alarmed, only to see that it was none other than the owner of said foreboding mansion himself.

 “Gods, how long have you been standing there?” Avren seethed, relaxing his grip on the blade and letting his arm fall to the side. "It's the middle of the night. Unless you're trying to figure out what that sound is, too?"

To his unsettling surprise, Alexei did not answer, nor did he turn to face the rogue. He was strangely still, staring outside the grand window. His eyes looked over the town, the trees, the moonlight. Avren did not particularly find this man chatty normally, but his lack of response now was becoming increasingly uncomfortable. Avren felt the rise of gooseflesh on his arms the longer he looked at him.

"Alexei, seriously," Avren began to speak, and cut himself short as a gentle tapping sounded once more. The corner of his gray lips twitched a fraction as Alexei's fingers rapped against the window in a soft, odd pattern. His staring was almost trance-like, gazing off into the distance at a building that looked like a temple or church. Gazing and that gentle tapping. Avren's stomach churned, and the sweat on his palms chilled him. "If you do shit like that, people are going to think you're a ghost," Avren said weakly, taking a small step back to increase their distance further.

"I'm already a ghost."

ALEXEI🌿 ↳ disillusionment arc it’s hard to imagine yourself when you were young. maybe you were meant to be a hero; maybe you could have been, in another world, but this world only made you sad. there seemed to be too many problems to fix and too much cruelty and too many hard lines that you did not know how to soften. the world turns and it is bloody and hard and you sit on your bed, thinking about the blood and the hardness and all you failed to do. i know it feels like you could sleep until the end of time, but i hope you don’t. i hope you lift yourself out of bed one day, not to save the world, but to peel an orange and to walk in a forest; to find all the softness you could not create.

“ i don’t want your prayers. ”

Though the piece of parchment was only featherlight - to the real world - but to him it felt like lead in his smooth hands. Stained by ink in a most charismatic hand, the words were anything but:

"I don't want your prayers."

Ripped from a book and left haphazardly on the writing desk in his study, Alexei had found the message waiting for him when he arrived that evening. How long had it been there? And had she lingered long inside this room? Already since arriving the maiden dipped in winesweet shadow had caressed the ivory keys of his piano, jewel-encrusted emblems and trick doors with the help of one rogue and one outlaw. To consider Hazriel wouldn't have touched the few trinkets and decor in his office would be foolish.

But he had nothing to hide.

It wasn't anger that bubbled up inside of him, only...an odd understanding. His care for her had been swept away - tossed aside - thrown right back into his face. And though the piece of parchment paper only spelled out five words there was so much more to the message Hazriel had given him. There was depth in the way she curled her letters, or the way she struck her t's. The intention behind it was surely one of aggravation but the more Alexei studied the brief letter the more he understood. 

While the entirety of his company was wandering about the remnants of locals in the city, Alexei helped himself to the guest quarters in his expansive home. Peering into each room, every member seemed to have everything untouched - protective measures were where they had been placed and left. But once he opened the door to Hazriel's room he found that the bed had been shoved aside and the chalk diagram swept away, the rug nearby in a bundle. A satchel of herbs that had been hanging beneath the bed had also been crushed on the dresser. Beyond that, another ward over the doorway had been misplaced as well.

It was fine.

Still, he took with him something she would not miss - a few strings of hair left on her pillow. With it, he tied those delicate strands around her note after rolling it up and carried himself off to his most favored room in the house to create a new protection spell. The bound note was then soaked in an oil of lavender and crushed amethyst while he worked at his desk on turning dried bay leaves and fresh sage into a fine powder. 

An old, worn book laid open while he worked in the small room, lit by the sun through tall windows by day and by candle only at night. It was filled with living plants, with tall chests and shelves stocked with a myriad of oddities and curiosities. He felt the most peace here and had lined the walls with as many wards as he could draw and frequently fumigated with sage smoke to ensure the peace would remain.

Once he was finished he pulled over a jar from a nearby shelf and set the cork to it down. He then placed the oil-soaked note with Hazriel's fingerprints, her hair, and her words inside of the jar before sprinkling over the dusted mixture he had crafted, topped off with dried wildflowers of varying hues that he thought fit her beauty best; alabaster, crimson, and wine.

He then lit a charcoal disc and dropped it inside, lifted himself up to his feet to face the sun where light could not be snuffed out by darkness, and as it burned he lifted the jar up his body and over his head. 

Hazriel said she did not want his prayers but he offered them up anyway; speaking in a hushed tone as he did so.

It was fine.

She didn't have to know. 

And she never would - not with that jar of limitless prayers hidden safe from her delicate fingers and lovely eyes.
