DARNASSUS: He lived in Darnassus up until Teldrassil was burned down. He was still a ‘teenager’ at the time, so he was attending school and doing other teenage things.

MOONGLADE: After Teldrassil was destroyed, he moved to Moonglade with his guardians and could be found around the refugee camps.

WHAT IS HE? - He’s obviously an elf, but given his mother was a Kaldorei and his father a Quel’dorei, he received an interesting mixture of the two and it’s a bit indiscernible to pinpoint exactly which type of elf he is. I welcome characters to be curious about this, but it’s possible he may get offended depending on how he’s asked (which is OoC fine with me).

"You have friends?" she teased as they ran through the town square. Avren was much faster– more agile than she, but the shadows clung to her enough that they acted as a veil against being seen. 

The pair peeled off down a strip of busy merchant stalls bustling with distraction, then along the darkened alley of seedy bars with no shortage of criminals and drunkards who'd cause scenes so captivating they could be staged. Within those places, they weaved a long trail that eventually dissipated into the shadows, slipping away from any guards still seeking them out. 

With a moment to rest, she clarified, "Which unsuitable friends do you wish to free yourself from, exactly? If it's the ones who sent us on this ridiculous chase…." Hazriel paused. Her breath was still audible as she fought to catch it. She then peaked around the corner and mumbled something to herself beyond his perception. 

"Besides!" she sighed with a touch of melodrama. "Which of us is willing to weather the loathsome social scenes of aristocratic connections or bow to the bleak contracts of random defenselessness? Hm?" Hazriel prodded, casting a mischievous but sunny glance over her shoulder. "It all sounds quite dreadful when I say it aloud, does it not?" 

She huffed back the last few breaths she could catch as their wait was coming to an end. "Come along," she tugged Avren twice to follow her further down the alley. "Let me know when you get more suitable friends; I'll buy you a drink to celebrate."

You gotta let it out soon, just let it out

It was late, the moon heavy and cradled in the constellations as the blanket of night yawned openly across the city. The pines outside the window groaned, nettles and branches bracing the harsher winds of the season. Avren was glad to be inside the earl’s estate and not in a tent. Or worse, taking refuge in said pine trees. He would take his victories when he could, even though this night did not feel like one.

Idly, he shuffled his cards. Old, worn-out and faded things the drow carried with him at all times. Avren had lost count on the number of drinks he helped himself to. He was warm, content, sore yet unwound only in the way he’d feel after indulging in his vices. When he craved comfort, he sought out Laeken’s company, enjoying the silence they shared as the warlock charted the stars above onto fresh parchment with expensive inks.

Though, tonight, he ignored those searching eyes, burning with green fire as he pinned Avren for all he was worth with a single glance. For the only eye Avren wanted on him was the color of molten amber, more brilliant than the most beautiful gold piece.

“You’re still here?”

Avren looked up to the voice that drew him from his thoughts. Speak of the devil. He would know him in his sleep, sun-blind, through a crowd. He could go years without listening to that accented lilt and still know its owner the moment he spoke.

J'egr approached and Avren regarded him as if he were evaluating a threat. “Yes, I am still here,” he replied simply, following the ranger’s movements with his eyes as he took the empty seat across from him. “I’m partial to the kitchens when the staff retire for the night. It means I’m left alone.”

“I see,” J'egr nodded, eye trained on the slightly dented flask on the table, then lingering on the flush coloring his cheeks. It accentuated his odd, white freckles, making them stand out more prominently. “Well, you aren’t left alone anymore.”

“No, Leo already made quick work of that.” Avren couldn’t help the wry smile that tugged at his lips. The fellow rogue graced Avren with his presence an hour or so prior. Wielding his dice and calling for a game to lighten the mood, Avren agreed all too readily for bets and sly hands that never remained fairly placed on the table for long.

J'egr cocked his head to the side, his long curtain of red hair tipping with the movement. “Not quick enough, considering the state you’re in.”

“The state I’m in,” Avren echoed with a roll of his eyes. “Haven’t you made your point already? This is all I have, let me enjoy it while I can.”

The elf fell silent, lips pursed and expression hardened. Avren matched him, hazel eyes flinty as he held his gaze evenly, unwilling to back down as ever. “I’d hardly call drinking yourself into a stupor something to have.”

“Fuck off,” Avren countered, for the umpteenth time that night, though it held no real bite. “What would you have me do instead? I have nothing. Nothing but this, to have and to hold.”

“And how long have you been holding onto nothing, Av?

Avren blinked, stunned, the open expression of puzzlement clear as day across his features. Cutting through the haziness of the alcohol, Avren felt the sobering question settle deep and heavy in his gut like a rock. His eyes lowered to the table, choosing instead to watch his fingers idly pick at the fraying edges of his playing cards.

How long had he? As long as he could remember. From the walls he lived in as a child not uttering a sound, to the ways he learned to hold a knife properly in his tiny fist. The things he did, said, to make sure his stomach never met his spine. A dagger with a velvet grip and blade of crystal under his pillow to stave off bad dreams. Lost, misplaced, aching in its absence as he searched to find it again. Heart picking up its pace as he enjoyed the thrill of a hunt, only to meet the staggering loneliness of an empty warehouse and a meal with mice for company. Bourbon, burning his throat twice over, yet finding comfort in how it chased everything bad away. A crutch, a habit, a vice.

"All my life,” he murmured, so soft J'egr nearly had to strain to hear it. The words rang too true, and a crescendo of emotion welled up hot and humiliating in Avren’s chest. “All my life,” he uttered again, louder. His lashes clung together as a painfully familiar wetness obscured his vision. He was grateful for his hair, the locks long enough to hide his face. "J'egr, I'm tired. I don't know what else to do."

He startled, flinching away at the touch to his cheek, a thumb brushing under his eye against the wet tracks his tears left. J'egr gazed at him, somber, understanding. “It's late, come to bed,” he said finally. And Avren felt nothing but the weak, soft urge to comply. “We don’t have to talk, just come to bed.”

So he did.

She smiled mischievously; laughed incredulously. Fear and horror quickly struck her in the temples and settled along lines and arches of her countenance. A ghostly veil overtook melychrysos.

"Do not lie to me," she reproached. "Not to yourself nor me. Do not accost me with a timorous forced confession at this unfortunate hour and call it Feelings simply because you're in a lover's quarrel. I won't have it or accept it." 

Her remarks were cold, unbidden but advancing no thanks to a hurt ego and terrible nightmare caught halfway out the door. She hovered outside the archway, the farmhouse door half open as she stood half outside. But J'egr's words repelled; further, she leaned out ever so slightly and felt the wind asking where to sweep her next. Despite its call, its consistent promise to sway so long as the sun and moons revolved, her anger made its home bone deep and exigent. 

Hazriel seethed, "I've seen you treat barmaids with more respect." The moonshine in her hair started to bleed at the crown, staining an unsettling deep wine hue as she invited herself back in one more time and approached all too calmly. 

"Lie to me about these matters again, and I'll pluck your other eye out." In seconds, she had become a looming angry shadow haunting the doorway, ferocious and threatening. "Gift it to me if you truly feel what you say." 

Fear and horror— advanced once more and cast a ghostly shade over her eyes as she recognized her misunderstanding. Hazriel stumbled one step, two steps back, with an embarrassing scuff of her boots across the wooden floor and out the door without another word.

J'egr refused to yield as he kept Avren cornered against the wall. It hadn't taken much strength to capture the shorter rogue - the moment he had stepped inside the library, J'egr pounced. He locked the drow in his arms and uprooted the other into a side room. "Loneliness is an instinct! It's a fucking signal from your underdeveloped brain that tells you that you need to have people around you!"

The laughter that spilled out past sharp teeth and silvery lips was nothing short of frantic when he was released from the hunter's grip; stumbling in the small space to catch his balance. Avren's shoulders, tight as they were, trembled as a bitter grin spread across his face. "Oh? Is that what it is? And you can see those signals, J'egr? Like you see yourself constantly between the legs of wome--"

With both hands, J'egr reached out to gather fistfuls of Avren's dark tunic. A growl raised between them as Avren was roughly thrown against the wall - hard enough that it caused the nearby shelves to quake and disturb the decorations hung up and arranged nearby.

"You're a fucking idiot. You know that, right? Some real nice piece of work you are."

Avren only laughed again, his slender hands loosely settling over J'egr's wrists, "Look at you, like you're one to preach. Has a true word ever left your lips?"

"At least I'm not the one standing around talking about how feelings are unnecessary complications," J'egr spat back, fists tightening even further as their gaze remained locked. Molten gold burning against equally fiery hazel. Flames licking at their souls from misdirected anger. "So what if they are? Everyone feels something. That's how people live."

The sound of a gloved fist meeting with J'egr's jawline echoed off stone.

The hunter's head snapped to the side. It took a few moments to process; recover. Avren was freed in the moment, left to remain with his back to the wall as J'egr took a step or two back in response to the strike. He flexed his jaw slowly to further inspect the damage as his fingers swept over the darkening spot where Avren's knuckles had collided with his flesh. His golden eye lifted to meet with the piercing glare of unforgiving amber.

"Then how about you try being honest for once?" J'egr breathed, shoulders raising up. Avren mirrored the posture and rolled his fingers back into a fist; ready to strike, ready to act every bit like the cobras he claimed to admire. "You believe that something bad will happen if you get emotionally involved with someone. But you have and now you're freaking the fuck out instead of trusting us."

"Fuck you," Avren sneered. He took his chance - and he struck. But this time J'egr raised a forearm up in time to deflect the assault. "And fuck off."

"No, you're going to shut the fuck up for once and listen!"

"And why should I listen to some half-trashed whore?!"

"Call me that again one more fucking time, Avren!" Raising his voice, J'egr shouted this time. The pair wrestled in their enclosed space, pressing back, pressing forward. Their arms were now linked together and it was just a matter of whose strength and anger outweighed the other. "Do you think you're better than me? Some little rat that fights anyone who gets too close, who runs to the shadows when the going gets tough?"

Avren was incensed.

"At least I'm not fucking my way through every town I come across, razing wombs and assholes like I'm on some warpath."

The drow grunted hard as he was thrown back against the wall with one last wave of J'egr's anger bolstering his offense. 

"Shut up," he hissed. "All I have ever wanted to do was try to help you before you make some stupid mistake." 

Both men took a moment to catch their breath but neither let up their aggression; neither lowered their guard.

"Avren... You've been strong on your own for long enough. It's normal. You have to fend for yourself here, that's just how this world works. You'd die otherwise. But you don't have to stay that way - you have me. You have Hazriel, you've got Leo and Wren, you have everyone else here who have stuck it out together this long. Don't abandon us because you're afraid. I know for a damn fact everyone else is. We've all gotten too close to each other and now we're all afraid of losing any part of one another. And you're all idiots to not just say that to each other or to yourselves."

"Fuck off..." the drow whispered again. 

Shoving past the hunter, their shoulders met in a rough and unkind gesture. J'egr's jaw was still bruising and throbbed with the echo of Avren's heart steeling itself again. Pulsing, twisting, attempting to wrap itself back up in something familiar and safe. He didn't want to hear such nonsense. Accusations against him while everyone else laughed down the corridor in one of the parlours.
