Happy Pride Month, everybody! I wanted to do something uplifting about how I felt about the gay "community"! This strip was posted late last night/early this morning as one of two new strips this week for Patrons at my Patreon... technically this was exclusive for my Patrons $2 and above, but since I hate self promotion and I don't think anybody besides my like eight Patrons has any idea how much stuff I'm posting that way, I'm going to post a few strips here and there as previews... but to see all the comics first, become a Patron! The thing about drawing digitally for me is that it allows me to go in super close and get small details right, which is important for a drawing like this where the head is kind of small and I want to get a particular expression other than just "smiling" or whatever. Maybe I'm just not good enough to do it on paper, but either way I like the results more on these drawings I'm redoing. Now that I've been drawing digitally for over a year, I'm also going back to my older digital drawings and redoing those... this second one here looked OK before, but I really kind of just stopped before I was finished. But I'm not just going to keep redrawing old work forever, by the way... When I started doing A Waste of Time, I came up with a broad outline of where the series would eventually go, and I've always known a lot about what would be happening later on in the books. Part of what I did in the first comics was start creating a language of visual symbols that I knew I could quote later, and their meaning would have more depth in the context of what I had said about them earlier on. These two panels are part of two different anecdotes that happened in Cafe Vesuvio in North Beach, but they're meant to recall each other. I knew that the panels would look different when I drew them years apart, so I came up with the idea that it could be part of an intentional metatextual thing where you could watch my style evolve, since a lot of the comics are about finding your voice as an artist. My drawing style has changed so much, though, that I wonder if people will even noticed that the two panels are supposed to echo each other. Guess that means I'll just have to keep redrawing panels from the older comics and be stuck on Volume Two in perpetuity...

When I've shown friends how I'm redrawing older pages, the response has generally been, "It looks much better, but it's not necessary... don't start doing that, down that road lies madness!" I heard the part where they said, "It looks much better." With this page, I was going to replace the lettering with my font that I made, because that's what i'm using now and I wanted it to look consistent. Then I thought I might touch it up a little. Then... about three days later... I would say about 5% of the original drawing is still there. Rickets and Prester, mainly, although I added a lot of shading to them. You can debate the necessity of the redrawing, but don't tell me it doesn't look a billion times better, because it does.

One of the comics I'm working on talks about guys I had crushes on in the movies I watched when I was a little kid, so here's Tommy Kirk in Old Yeller. I was also a fan of Swiss Family Robinson because of him. Of course, Tommy Kirk turned out to be gay, as did a lot of the guys I had crushes on when I was little... I had excellent gaydar, even though I didn't understand it at the time. I was just drawn to "sensitive" boys, and I really liked them in movies where they got to be emotional and cry.
