AHKJ exiled would've been so much funnier if instead of being xenophobic and ragging on Russia for no reason, they kept every joke the same but replace it with a stupid random privileged country. One that absolutely no one would think to hate on. Like the Netherlands. I think that'd be way funnier and more creative and just generally better. I stand by this

I wouldn't say a soul so much as more of a belief that some living things possess within them an "essence".

A generally pragmatic and secular species, Ashyrans wouldn't say that a being's essence transcends the material world (they have no concept of an afterlife or a post-death place of damnation). Essences are basically thought to be what constitutes a beings non-physical state, it's thoughts, hopes, dreams etc. The mark of sapience.
