I really dislike how some people will attribute every homophobic or heteronormative writing choice associated with Riyoko Ikeda’s works to Ikeda herself while they only engage with the anime adaptations which were directed by men.
The Rose of Versailles manga handles Oscar’s relationship to gender so unbelievably well that Oscar could be considered an entire different character than to the latter half of the anime. While I absolutely have criticisms of how André is written in the manga, the anime takes many of those flaws and turns them into an argument that Oscar should ultimately accept an essentialized form of womanhood and become a wife, which is the opposite of what the manga is doing with Oscars character and the opposite of what Oscar and André’s relationship was supposed to represent in the narrative.
The same goes for Oniisama e. There are definitely aspects of the manga worth critiquing, but a lot of the most frustrating parts of the ending were adaptation choices made by Osamu Dezaki, not things that came directly from Ikeda. Kaoru and Henmi’s relationship is presented as doomed from the beginning and Nanako’s romantic feelings are directed entirely toward Rei, she never develops romantic interest in any man. The anime places far more emphasis on romanticizing heteronormativity than the source material does. Dezaki literally removed most of the explicitly queer and revolutionary scenes and imagery in both adaptations.
