especially on tumblr, when people think of AAC, they only think of high tech, symbol based, and without any assistive technology. it doesn't just start and end with apps! there is so many options <3 (heart). and i think it is really cool that theres so many creative solutions to access communication!

i also think it's important not to limit in our heads, what a certain disability aid looks like, and who uses it and why. in my experience on this website, not many people include spellers, Deaf or blind (or both) AAC users, and AAC users with motor related disabilities (who can't press buttons on a screen), and a lot of other types of AAC users (racialized AAC users are especially left out, or kicked out, no matter what kind of AAC they use).

i truly believe from the bottom of my heart that all AAC users can learn and benefit from each other. i think we need each other. its an ecosystem, not a monoculture.

I feel like we don’t talk about the sufferings of wearing glasses enough. It’s become one of those things that’s become so normalised and so common that we just. Brush over it. Tell people to get over it. (I wanna say kind of like being a child of divorce? That might just be a uk thing idk)

Like for example the fact that they can just. Get dirty or greasy and you can be in a situation where you can’t clean them so your sight is just. Blurry and you have to accept it. How being sick or having allergies basically means you have to accept not being able to see quite clear enough because you can’t just. Keep wiping them it’s a sissyphean task at that point. Wearing masks, be it during the pandemic or just to protect yourself? A nightmare. Sometimes no amount of anti-fogging wipes do anything. To the fog with you

And don’t even get me STARTED on how it interacts with mental illness. Have fun having sensory difficulties that amplify being able to see every little spec of dirt or grease on the lenses. Or perhaps OCD and the compulsive need to check for and clean away those spots

also because it already got someone telling me that i deserve nothing and that its privileged to say that i deserve better AAC than what we have available - yes it is privileged to even have access to high tech AAC at all. when i say *i* in this post, i don't mean that *only i* deserve a robust and sustainable AAC made with fair labor, i mean *every* AAC user deserves this. i can understand the confusion, but i don't think there is a way that i could phrase this post that will make someone happy if the only narrative they want to see about disability is me being grateful for what we do have, instead of asking for better, even if the state of the art tech is years behind what we could actually have if we had the chance.

Unpopular opinion, but ADHD isn’t actually very similar to autism. I’m tired of them being treated like they’re the same spectrum, and same severity. If actually you look at the criteria, they’re really not that similar.

I have noticed that some people want to learn about why an AAC user may choose to type with a boardset rather than with a keyboard.

I am one person. I am an AAC user and my primary form of communication for most of my life has been typing. I also use symbol-based AAC. Sometimes I use my symbol-based AAC to write. I am using it to write this.  Sometimes I can type with a keyboard and sometimes I can't, because what I can do is often very different from day to day and hour to hour. Sometimes I use my symbol-based AAC even when I might be able to type on a keyboard. There are different reasons that I do this. 

It helps me be fast and fluent with my AAC to use it as much as I can. This makes it more easy for me to communicate with people when I need to.

To say thank you on a keyboard I need to make nine taps. To say thank you with my AAC boardset I need to make one tap.

Words and symbols can be more easy to process than letters.

AAC is not inferior and I also don't need to give a reason to be using it. 

I hope that this may be helpful for somebody. I am only one person and other people can have different reasons and experiences.

As someone with moderate support needs, I’m tired of trying to explain the difference between not being able to do something at all, and struggling to do something. I can’t live independently, and I will likely never drive a car. I cannot complete most everyday tasks without prompting. This is different than struggling to do those tasks, or the tasks being energy draining. Both of our experiences are valid and we both deserve supports, but don’t say you know exactly how I feel or have the same experience as me.
