"I don’t exactly have a choice in the matter. I think you know which once I’d make if I did." She shrugged halfheartedly, though managed the slightest of smiles once he did provide her reprieve. "Thanks. I appreciate it."

Two minutes later, Axel clapped his hands together as Aubrey returned to where he stood. "That wasn't too hard, was it? Now for the fun part—" 

Dropping to his knees, the vampire motioned with a tilt of his head for her to follow. "You and I are more enhanced compared to our red blooded counterparts, we have to remember that when exercising our abilities—both physical and mental. Up for a challenge?" He added, moving into a push up position.

"Do you know where Lincoln was, what happened to him? What did you do when we left? And where were you when he collapsed? Where were you during any of this?" she snarled, her tone rising and her angry only growing hotter as she looked upon Zadkiel’s broken face, the creases deepening in her scowl meanwhile his etched pain across his face. "That’s all you have to say to me? To everyone? I don’t know?” 

"I was with the Aislington girl, Laney." Axel whispered, his voice clearer as he began to regain his composure. Anger was familiar, it was something he so easily manipulated within himself—control it and you were dangerous, surrender to it and you were useless. The Angel of Mercy had lived by the former since his decent from Heaven, and he needed to now more than ever. "What would you have me say? That I'm sorry? Unlike many, I can be in two places at once. I was well informed of Lincoln's condition as I conversed with Roan. I was more concerned for your bondmate's wellbeing than anyone else apart from you, but I had to think of our coven collectively first."

"I know, okay? I know. But are we looking to kill each other right now? I just — I want to take this slow."

"Aubrey, are you sure you want to do this? Slow isn't a particularly prominent word in my vocabulary." After a moment, Axel sighed. "Fine… start by doing a lap, then we can stretch."

"Can’t we start at a bit of a slower pace? I’d rather not hit you right now."

"In the real world, you don't get to decide when you want to fight—you do, you die."

"Sorry man, I don’t fight the elderly. That’s not very virtuous now is it?” Alec quipped giving the older Blue Blood an amused look.

"Cute, you think you're funny. Let me remind you of a fundamental truth you seem to have forgotten somewhere between falling from upstairs a few millennia back, and your last frat party—you're not."

"That they are," Maeve agreed. But she was taken back by his next statement. "Dance with you? I thought this was about self-defense."

[axel--hall]

"It is about self defence," Axel reaffirmed, taking her hand in his before she had time to question him further. 

"Think of this as your usual er… what you call a workout, simply remodelled ." Pressing a command into his iPhone, music began playing slowly from around the gym room. "Now don't worry, but keep focused." Axel warned jokingly, throwing the device to a cushioned mat some way away before spinning the other Blue Blood in a circle around him. "Actually, maybe worry a little."

And I don’t suppose you would count dance as anything either would you? 

"Uh… both are invaluable where coordination is concerned I suppose." 

After a moments silence, the vampire smiled sadly. "Dance with me?"

"Are you saying that I don’t look both strong and skilled? You wound me with your words alone. I promise if I do you any harm I’ll make sure that you get a band-aid at the very least.”

"That's exactly what I'm insinuating. Though if you're so great, I doubt you'll need my assistance at all."

Striding up to Axel, Laney didn’t say a word before she swung her fist squarely into his jaw. “I thought you were supposed to be protecting people,” she hissed, referencing the amount of information that had recently come to light. “How am I supposed to trust that your little tricks are going to help us now?”

He saw it coming, but didn't inch a muscle as Laney's small fist made a cracking impact on the side of his skull. Closing his eyes, Axel knew he deserved it and more—as it was he who was responsible for what happened at the 400 Ball. Flashes of that evening danced violently in his mind… there was no reprieve from reality; that he had learnt millennia ago. Zadkiel didn't poison the innocent students of St. Agnes, nor butcher his own men, but the Blue Blood whose sole purpose was to protect them had failed drastically. "I don't know," he finally admitted, only then looking his best friend's other half in the eye.

Perhaps I don’t want to learn how to defend myself — you have your little venators running around knocking the wind out of me, I think that my safety is more or less under control.

That there is a fabulous point, though I'd prefer you at a standard where you naturally make it a little less easy for them to do so.

"I didn’t exactly feel comfortable with this in the first place, so no need to harp on it. I’m going to do my best."

"I know you will—I wouldn't be here if I thought otherwise. Tell me Aubrey, what am I working with? Strike that, show me—try and hit me."

I…I suppose I could do more to learn.

It wouldn’t hurt.

"Oh, it'll hurt… do you even do anything besides yoga in this cycle?"

"If you want to learn how to defend yourself, to fight, we start now. God only knows how much help you'll need."
