FINAL BOOK RESULT 2/2
I enclosed the book using black spray painted cardboards to emphasis the idea of black hole eating everything up and disappearing. The black slime reiterates the un-organic “alien offspring” forms inside the book. I used nails to bound everything together.
FINAL BOOK RESULT 1/2
The final book result explores un-organic forms dubbed “alien offsprings” that is inspired from the sci-fi aspect of Frankenstein. These offsprings are also inspired from the un-organic dead body parts that Victor Frankenstein was able to form to create his monster. This sci-fi aspect took me on a journey exploring ways and methods of how show these images, right paper stock to use and how it’s going to be bind. Looking at the final result, I’m very happy and pleased with the decisions I’ve made on how to execute the final book work. I thought that going black on black gave the images a lot of emphasis and focused on the details of their form. It also adheres to the sci-fi theme that I went to, “a black hole inspired” book. Choosing the right binding method was also another thing that I addressed going from scummy binding to, ring binds. After speaking with Andy about the ring bind, I found larger ring hinges and after applying it. I felt that it gave the book what was missing. Flexibility and freedom to move. I also solve the problem of the book starting to look like “office style” book. A lot of experimentation and exploration was involved into making sure I executed this book properly.
Reflection
Throughout this whole journey, I struggled a lot but experimentation and actually doing something and putting it out there in real life, gave me cleared ideas on how to go about executing things that came up from doing this book, to learning what failed, what didn’t work and what did. The biggest problem I faced was probably finding a theme. I went on about searching for this by going back to my first prototype and analysis what I did right and what I needed to do to improve from those mistakes. Talking with Andy really helped a lot in clearing my thoughts and thinking about the processes I needed to do to come up with solutions. Reflecting on the book, again I was very pleased with the result. The images came out really nicely with half tone which emphasised their form a lot. The biggest thing that came out of this bookwork, was just the aspect of experimentation and giving it a go so that you can actually find out what will work instead of having it just inside your head and conceptualising it.
PROCESS
After the failed experiment with the scummy binding, I decided to go with a ring bind instead and I was able to get a much better finish than the scummy bind. However, after reflecting on the finished book, I still felt like something was missing/lacking, it wasn’t “clicking”. I struggled and thought about this missing element so I decided to talk to Andy about it. After showing him the book and discussing a few topics on how I should go on about solving this problem. He suggested to try and get a bigger ring binders and react to it.
Reflection After discussing this with Andy, I felt that a sense of relief and gave me more ideas to work on trying to solve this dilemma. He pointed out about the book starting to look like an “office” type look which I wanted to avoid. This point led me to thinking on how I can address that by trying to figure what kind of binding material I should try. Another great point was about the way the holes were punch and how it added another element to the book. In terms of the book, I was very happy with the final outcome of the images on how i turned out with the black paper. I felt that everything came together in the end but I just needed to address the binding material.
Note: Trying to take the photo and getting the right colour was a bit of struggle that’s why the images are bit blue and darkish compared to the gif
So after waiting for the slime to dry out and binding the whole book. It didn’t turn out the way I imagined it to be. The slime part of the book really dried out and pretty much disappeared and by doing that also just made that part of the book crumpled and extending to the images of the other signature. The scummy glue had a different green colour which is not the one I was hoping for and it smelt really bad. I felt that the rough aesthetic of the book overtook the contents which wasn’t the plan. I hoped to that it would’ve have found a more balanced way to show both a rough aesthetic and the content inside. So during Week 11 class, I showed Andy my prototype for final book and we discussed about it. He spoked about going in two different directions where I used one light source which is the green slim/scummy bind or just go “dark” like a black hole where the binding should also be black. At first I thought I could still find a way to balance the two but then I started I liking the idea of going “dark”. Using just the black tone aesthetic for the whole book would still align with my subject and create an even more mysterious effect on my images.
In the afternoon, I’ve also found a way to use the slime as part of my aesthetic, instead of putting onto the book I’ll be creating a black slime this time and using it to entrap my final book. (An image would better explain it, so I’ll be getting onto it)

REFLECTION
Exploring and Experimenting are 2 things I’ve learnt throughout this course. Even if it fails, at least you’ve actually made it. It’s good to have heaps of conceptual ideas but as long as it’s not in real life. You wouldn’t know if it would actually work. I’ve always had hesitation sof trying to do a physical mockup over the fear of it not working but through the different assessment we’ve done and prototyping I’ve made , I’ve come to realise that I did a lot more work compared to just writing it down and having it on screen.
In terms of the work that we’ve been exposed to, I started to get really attracted to the works that has a roughness and messy aesthetic to them. I thought that this made me want to grab the book and feel it’s texture. This is why I was inspired to do create something like of that style for my final book. Using the tumblr as a journal also helped me keep organised in how I’m going with my work and know where I’m at compared to other people. Using this type of social media as tool for learning by looking at what other people posted exposed me to other works, that I probably wouldn’t be able to find or know of myself.

I find this binding very interesting. Maybe we can use something from a living creature as our cover?
An example of a glow in the dark screen print! It looks white and normal on black paper in daylight but glows when it’s in the dark! I think it would fit in the theme of the moon for my final.
Maybe I can just print the lyrics in black so that it doesn’t distract the reader as much, allowing them to focus more on the textures and finishes.
Some of the “offsprings” I’ve created using 3d Software. Experimenting and playing around with the form of the shapes helped me a lot trying to mould my creation to the way I wanted *Insert reference about Victor Frankenstein’s numerous experiment before creating his monster to come alive*.
Starting to construct my prototype final book. I used the the slime element on one signature to try and create a layered enclosed body. Still waiting for it to dry as it’s still a bit wet. While the other signature is a collection of alien “offsprings” that I’ve created. Will hopefully try to bound the two using the scummy glue.
Reflection:
Having the physical mockup was really handy and it just emphasises Andy’s point of having it in real life gives you more options to experiment and further push the idea. I thought that having it my hand and looking at it. I saw more potential and somehow got all this different ideas that I could try and implement. Although I still have to make sure not to try and over do it to the point that I would lose my main concept.
CZARNO (BLACK) Designed by mariaszczodrowska artbook Created in 2015 in 1 copy Dimensions: 20,6 x 20,6 x 3,8 cm Book has been made to appeal to sighted and unsighted people. The use of tactile pictures as well as traditionally printed and embossed Braille texts is aimed at broadening the multi sensory reception of artists’ books by the sighted and the blind. The topic of vision loss is subtly developed in the short text and provides the rationale for all formal procedures applied in the work. The series has been made with reference to picture books(unavailable for the group in question).
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This book uses the sense of touch as the most important aspect of the design. I thought that how she was able to cater to both people who are able to see and those who don’t was awesome as they can feel the whole aesthetic of the book with just their touch. The use of no content and subtractive cut emphasises her main point even more.
CORTEX ~ AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE
Designed by Ophélie Maurus
This project was an analyse of the human eye and perception, resulting of a multidisciplinary production. The study was aimed at understanding the visual world to better understand their rules, how to enrich it, and in this way our role of modern day image-makers too.

While I was researching on my topic for my book, I stumbled upon this neat project that I thought was worth sharing. Even though it’s got no relation to what I’m trying to explore. I thought that this book and how it uses the human eye as the main topic successfully engages with the readers. Using optical illusions allows the eyes to maximise it’s use and to see everything in detail in the image.

Really liking this old-school aesthetic. I think something that really attracts me to this is how well worn it is. I wonder if it’d be worth making a publication that looks a little used, dog-eared, pre-loved… attention spans are short these days, and it seems like people like the nostalgia attached to objects without actually having the patience to create that nostalgia themselves.
Anyway, just enjoying the connection between front and back covers. Simple and effective.
Agree with Mary on the old-school vibe of the book and the worn out aesthetic. What really caught my eye though was the black double spread page of the book. Since I’m using black paper as a material, The worn out aspect gives greater contrast and more detail to the images of the spread.

Got really inspired by this and since I had extra slime left that I made and noticed how it expanded inside a zip lock bag. I decided to just stick another dead body inside the plastic bag that had the left over slime. Waiting to see how it’ll turn out
I got to visit Stedejilk Museum last year and have been thinking about the ‘Zero: Let Us Explore the Stars’ exhibition ever since. This is an installation by Otto Piene, known for his kinetic and performance art. Simple geometry, repetition, light, crazy forms, and this quiet consistency is something I would love to translate into my own work.
This is so cool! I could stare at this for hours. Love the different forms of the installation and how everything just illuminates all around the room.
I spent so long doing the vectors on this and then decided it looked better without them

Very organic shapes that creates fluidity and form. Almost look like blood veins. Trying to create the same form in 3D although having trouble trying to execute it as accurate as this design.

Melting like effect creating this ooze like form onto the paint. Could try and incorporate this into the alien forms I will be creating.
