Photo of the Day: April 10, 2014 at Nunatak Design One of the most surprising facts about black oystercatchers, is how bad they are at judging the tide when choosing nesting sites. This, despite living their entire life at the water's edge. In Glacier Bay flooding from the tide was the cause of almost half (48%) of all the eggs that did not hatch. Overall, Oystercachers lose abut as many eggs to flooding (30%) as they to to predators (32%). Interestingly, one nest in Prince William Sound was flooded for over an hour in glacial fjord water and the egg still survived to hatch! Prints available at http://ift.tt/1aM6hb4. Photo of the Day: April 9, 2014 at Nunatak Design Kayakers encounter oystercatchers often, as they nest and live in the places we land our kayaks and set up camps. They can be boisterous and conspicuous, but despite the bright beak, they can also hide surprisingly well. These birds have high site fidelity, meaning that 92% return to nest at the same site. Eggs are almost perfectly camouflaged and laid in just about any bowl-shaped rock, gravel, bar, etc which makes them very easy to step on. So be careful if you are sharing a beach with these birds! These little fellas are common along shorelines in Southeast Alaska, however they are one of the rarest shorebirds in the world with a population of about 10,000. Hey folks, I'll be teaching a couple of photography classes this month. The beginner class is composed of 4, hour-long sessions on Tuesday evenings and the Advanced class is a one-day 4 hour long workshop.
