I researched about familiars today, after re-reading the post I reblogged about them. I looked for a tarot spread to help me find my familiar, but I didn’t find any (if you know one, feel free to share it in the comments) so I made my own !

How to Use the Spiral Spread Method to Level Up Your Tarot Readings

I could wax poetic about big spreads. @goodbonestarot has written on why you should pull more cards even as a tarot newbie which I wholeheartedly agree with. There’s something really aesthetically and spiritually satisfying about having a big spread laid out on your floor, maybe a couple candles going to set the mood while you bask in a waterfall of truth. Or maybe that’s just me. 

Either way, big spreads can help you understand a situation complexly, provide a lot of opportunities for creative problem solving, and help you gain a less prescriptive/more intuitive understanding of how to conduct your tarot readings. So there’s a lot to be gained from reading a big spread from time to time. 

But big spreads are also intimidating and setting out to do a massive one all in one go can obscure some of the insights you might get along the way. Which is why I recommend spiraling them out as you need for the occasion. Below I give an example of how I do this with a “spiral spread” that I use but you can find plenty of other spreads that would work with this method too. 

Phase 1: Six Cards

1: Signifier/What do you bring to the situation?

2: Challenge/Situation

3: Past

4: Future

5: What’s at the root of your situation?

6: What advice do gods/spirits/the Universe have for you?

This level is my go-to spread for reading at parties right now. Remember that ask where I talked about accidentally making a tough guy start crying at a party? That was this spread. So even at this level it can really pack a punch. It’s enough depth that a querent usually feels like they got a proper reading but not deep enough that the details start to get lost which I feel like is important when reading in busy social situations. 

Phase 2: Ten Cards

1: Signifier/What do you bring to the situation?

2: Challenge/Situation

3: Past

4: Future

5: What’s at the root of your situation?

6: What advice do gods/spirits/the Universe have for you?

7: How do gods/spirits/the Universe see your past?

This was my go-to spread for many many years. I used it more when I was hanging out with friends in lowkey settings where I had plenty of time to read it out. You’ll see here that what’s built in here is the relationships between forces acting on a person’s life. If I’m going to draw extra cards, that tends to be where I get the most bang for my buck. Relationships fill out the spread and add complexity and depth without opening a whole new can of worms. This level strikes a good balance here I think.

5: What’s at the root of your situation?

I’ve only used this level of the spread a few times over the years. Usually for myself but I have on occasion used it for friends who were really going through a rough patch. It’s definitely a lot to take in which is why I suggest laying it out and reading it in phases. I consider cards 11-15 to really be more along the lines of clarifying cards than strictly part of the spread. Which is to say, pull the ones you feel are most important. I’ve pulled them just for the root or just for the future - whatever make the most sense for your situation. 

Closing Thoughts

Big spreads really do ask you to rely on your intuition and if that feels uncomfortable starting out, know that that discomfort is normal. We spend a lot of our lives being told to trust sources of information other than ourselves and while a lot of that is done for good reason, it can alienate us from all the good knowledge we have within. So big spreads are an opportunity to reclaim it. 

I really recommend writing down insights as you go or having another person do it for you because big spreads turn up a lot of them, often ones that reveal even more when considered together. You don’t want to forget anything along the way. Also seeing how you see a card at one level before you lay down the next phase can also be very illuminating. 

If you’ve not done a big spread before or it’s been a long time, I really recommend giving it a go. Life is complex, it’s important to be comfortable with spreads that are complex too.

Needed:  - A black candle - A sealable bottle - A taglock for you (This is the part that tricks the malevolent energy). - Black food coloring or food coloring you can mix to get black.  - Yellow Ribbon - A piece of paper - Black Salt (Salt mixed with ash and/or charcoal) - Cayenne  - Water - Rosemary - Basil Steps:  - Gather your items in a place you can clean easily.  - Light your candle. - Open your bottle, and add your taglock first.  - Add a layer of black salt.  - Add your Rosemary and Basil. - Add a layer of Cayenne - Pour in your water into your bottle, - Add your food coloring until you get to your desired shade of black.  - Seal the bottle as tightly as possible! - Focus your intent and channel it into your bottle.  - Give that bottle a serious shaking!  - If you have a corked bottle that you dont plan on reusing, Set the bottle on top of your paper.  - Use your black candle to drip wax onto the cork and create a wax seal. I don’t like to curse. Not because I think it’s wrong for anyone to do, but because it doesn’t fit my lifestyle.

This is a spell for those like me who don’t like to curse, but want people to know when they’ve hurt them. Let them feel the presence of your sight, while cleansing yourself from them.

Gather

👁 Purple Candle for power

👁 Bay Leaves for protection and strength

👁 Smokey Quartz for the removal of negative energy

👁 A room with a door to the outside or a window that can be opened

Process

👁 Wait until night, the open a door or window to the outside.

👁 Place your candle in the middle of that room. Make sure there is enough space for you to stand between the candle and the door.

👁 Hold in your hand the bay leaf and smokey quartz. These are for your protection and to help you heal.

👁 Light the candle. make sure that you are not standing between the door and candle when you do so.

👁 With the quartz and bay still in your hand, think of the negative emotions you had. Channel them to your feet while you let the quartz and bay ignite positive energy elsewhere.

👁 Step into the light while facing the candle. Make sure your shadow goes out the door or window behind you.

👁 Whisper the name of the person who hurt you.

👁 Let your negative energies go out while your shadow leaves to find them as well.

Moving Forward

Don’t let your heart dwell on the places your shadow goes. It does not go to harm, only to remind and to lift the burden off of your shoulders. Keep your quartz and bay handy whenever negative thoughts appear. Draw on them to keep you strong.

Before I begin sharing this Tarot spread, please check the safe space tags at the bottom of this post before proceeding to ensure that this is safe for you to read. There are some Tarot spreads that we craft for ourselves in privacy, to help unlock and illuminate a pathway for our troubles to be resolved, and then there are the Tarot spreads we have created that seem to have a life of their own, ones that speak to us in such a way that they need to be shared with others. This Tarot spread is one I’ve kept hidden from the world and my blog simply because it unearths a pain my heart hates to relive but the outcome of this spread is always the same, a healing that soothes my soul and a reminder that I am a survivor. This spread was created after I was sexually abused as a way to help me cope. I was angry, lost and unsure of what to do to give my life meaning again. I created this spread as a way to heal, to take back control of my life, my body and to remind myself that I am not at fault. It is my greatest hope that this spread can help those who are or have been in a similar position as I am or be used as a starting point for their own healing. I wish this spread was available for me back then, when the only thing in my life that didn’t judge me harshly for what happened to me was my Tarot deck.  

Position One: How can I validate my experiences? Being someone who has dealt with sexual abuse, my experiences were often trivialized by others or I was made to feel that what happened to me was less than what it was, creating for me feelings of shame and isolation. This position provides reassurance that what you experienced was real and not okay.

Position Two: How is this experience affecting me? Because the people I told, minimized my abuse, I started thinking that it also wasn’t a big deal. I convinced myself that I could move on easily and not let it affect me but deep down there was still a growing toxin of hurt within me. This position brings light to how the abuse is affecting you in your life. It provides some clarity of some of the pain and feelings you may be suppressing.

Position Three: How can I let go of the blame? One thing that I did a lot when dealing with this abuse was shift blame to myself. I found every excuse for why it was my fault and why I might have deserved it. This position helps you see that what happened to you wasn’t your fault and that you are not the blame for the abuse you endured.

Position Four: How can I start to heal? It took me awhile to get to this step. Healing is ugly and vicious and it isn’t easy at all. I became comfortable being broken that I didn’t know what else to be anymore and then one day I grew tired of allowing my abuser to control my life and it was with that realization that I knew I needed to do something to heal. This position gives you a starting point or first step to help heal and free yourself from the abuse.

Position Five: What support do I need? I quickly realized I couldn’t heal on my own, no matter how hard I tried. I needed resources that I didn’t have and seeking out those resources were incredibly scary but so worthwhile in the end. This position showcases any external support and resources to look into in regards to your healing. This could be support groups, trusted friends, therapy, etc.
