On the website I’ll be spotlighting each year of the Diamond, Golden, and Silver age of Hip Hop … ranking the albums, doing podcasts, and songs here and there. After the 1988 post (The Greatest year in Hip Hop) we continued on, this post is the 1990 A 3 person panel grabbed what each thought to be the top 25 Hip Hop albums of 1990 and ranked them The rankings were added and then averaged, the results are what you are about to read With that being said if you dont agree with the position of your favorite album, dont blame me! lol http://eclectikrelaxation.com/HipHop/archives/1194
We all agree that 1988 was the greatest year of Hip Hop right? Cool. Well what I’m gooing to do is post the top/greatest Hip Hop albums from each year afterwards, starting with 1989 here (Of course I’ll eventually do 1987 and before), anyway … this is my list, I tried to not be too biased, and this one does not ahve a panel of voters like the future ones will. With that being said, you need the majority of these in your collection regardless of the order they are listed. If you disagree witht he ranking let me know in the comments and on Twitter (@TweetRhymesLife) Now, Lets get to it!
What is the greatest Hip Hop Album to come out in the 90s? Everyone has their opinion, this year we are going to let the votes speak! On Challonge.com I’ve created a 64 seeded tournament were you can vote and when it’s all said and done we’ll have as close to a definitive answer aw we can get. I picked the albums for the brackets, and the seeding (If your favorite was left off I apologize) Start off by filling out your bracket … predict who will win Every week what ever album is leading in the votes will move on to the next round until we finally have a champion That’s it. So vote, spread the word, have others vote and lets have some fun! (Remember to bookmark the site to vote during the following rounds) http://challonge.com/90sHipHop
Who’s the best emcees: Biggie, Jay Z and Nas
Will we have a definitive answer? … probably not, BUT we are going to discuss it!
Join me and @12Kyle as we discuss each emcee and break them down including:

HIP HOP GODS TOUR FEST REVIEW show #1 DC. I received a gift from the Redskins Senior VP on behalf of the team, and rocked it during my set. The DC crowd was delighted and took all kinds of pics, which lead to social outlets, which then got all my folks in Philly upset lol. So now we load up the buses and head to NY. Wonder what jersey I’ll rock during my set at Irving Plaza, now that NY has an additional team within. Hmmmmmm!
Next time you're in DC, drinks on me!

The Core Members Erick Sermon Parrish Smith K-Solo Redman Das EFX Keith Murray Jamal
The Albums, The Songs, The Impact on Hip Hop … there’s even Shadz of Lino, Illegal, and L.O.D Talk
Pack a Lunch this is a LONG one … THREE HOURS!
Listen in chunks, take it on a ride, clean up your house, but you dont want to miss out on this one!
The Hip Hop Skit seems like they’ve been around on albums forever, but really they popped up in 1989 with De La Soul’s classic 3Feet High and Rising when they gave use the De La Game show … This was played throughout the album which made it even more innovative, let alone the questions:
How many feathers are on a Purdue chicken? How many fibers are intertwined in a Shredded Wheat biscuit? What does ‘touche et al le pu’ mean? How many times did the Batmobile catch a flat?
LOL and shoutouts to Don Newkirk and Dante the Scrub …
Not to be outdone, De La Soul is dead featured a comic strip and a Grade School “turn the page” beep in the interludes
Unfortunately in the 90s the majority of skits on Hip Hop albums included the emcee receiving oral sex, having sex or smoking weed; I never understood why they thought this would be entertaining to listen to (or picturing … Hi Biggie)
Anyway, I wanted to do a list of my favorite skits from the Golden and Silver era of Hip Hop, so take a read and a listen, if you have favorites or want to comment on your memories or thoughts of these, feel free below or tweet me @TweetRhymesLife
Let’s get to it!
10. The Infamous Prelude
The Infamous (1995)
One of the early skits (If you want to call it a skit) of the 90s that did NOT include sex or drug use … it was a straight message (To we think we know who), it was straight up honest, pissed off P Punching in the face for living will forever be classic
Listen to them all on the site
1988 The GREATEST year in Hip Hop Music
1988 The GREATEST year in Hip Hop Music
I’ve designated The Golden Era of Hip Hop 1983 – 1988 a 5 year span, thought process is every year a good album or song came out cannot be the Golden Era and that in changes and shifts in the Hip Hop content so should the era
Golden Era – Gold Chains and Sneakers Silver Era – Fitteds and African Medallions Bronze – Mafioso, Champagne, Drugs, etc.
With all that being said in my opinion The Golden Era’s best was the end 1988 … I consider this to be THE BEST YEAR IN HIP HOP MUSIC
The number of classic albums and singles released in 1988 is staggering; I’m going out on a limb to say there is no year that is comparable song for song album for album to ’88 (Feel free to dispute in the comments)
How can I make such a claim? Let’s go through the year … through the list, let me show you…
January

Where’s the Party At?
People sleep on this group; they were basically DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince … with a little more edge. Like Jeff and Prince were DC and Money and Marvelous were Marvel unfortunately at the time there was only room for one Philly group in that lane I can’t say that the album was a classic but it had a few singles that were dope “Play it cool” and “Find an Ugly woman”
Just the beginning of the greatest year of #HipHop
January 30
Life Is… Too Short – Too $hort
Too $hort had about 12,478 tapes out by the time 1988 rolled around, Born to Mack got him worldwide appeal and the follow up to that “Life is …” kept his momentum going with the title track and

What More Can I Say? – Audio Two
All you really need is “Top Billin” to lock down this whole month! This slept on album had a few gems on it “The Questions”, “I don’t care”, and “Giz Starts Buggin” Personally I still bang “Hickey’s on my neck” and “I like cherries” Milk and Giz were never able to capture the fire from this album but it’s a classic.
Goin’ Off
February 23
The debut album from The Diabolical Biz Markie, this album has standouts Nobody beats the Biz, Goin Off, Make The Music, Nobody beats the Biz, and of course The Vapors … the Juice Crew production was second to none as well Biz and TJ swan dropped hits on this one

When I fell in love with Hip Hop
Anyone that knows me knows I love Hip Hop music … and I can talk it all day; ever since the movie “Brown Sugar” (one of my personal favorites) came out people ask “When did you fall in love with Hip Hop?” …I’ve never really answered that on my site I don’t think … so why not now?
Introduced to Hip Hop
I found Hip Hop with Rappers Delight and Rappin and Rocking the House by the Funky Four Plus One The sounds were different I already knew the track for Rappers Delight but they were talking over it lol … what really grabbed my attention was Wonder Mike talking about going over his friend’s house to eat … said their food was ugly and stunk LOL That was all I had heard but then The Funky Four Plus One more made that Rappin and Rockin and Sha Rock KILLED that joint! (http://youtu.be/fUUyGxRoDQY) I think I was doing the Wop before The Wop came out LOL
…………………………………………………………………..
Started Dating Hip Hop
Play at your own Risk and Planet Rock was being played EVERYWHERE like no one disliked those songs lol I think I got my first Box then … I remember sitting outside on the steps rockin’ The Message that track was an animal! Apache and 8th Wonder dropped (I still have the vinyl) and “That’s the Joint” by F4+1 was real dope
By 3rd and 4th grade I was all in
Back then you could go to the local record store and the cooler people that worked there would make you a tape w/ all the new joints that came out or whatever was hot for $10 (The First Mix tapes) … that’s how I was exposed to all the different songs, I didn’t have $10 (I was in Grade school! lol) but I knew people that did and I just dubbed their joints I remember my first tape had “It’s Yours” by T La Rock on it, it was the second to last song on the first side … I remember because I kept rockin that joint lol Rock Box by Run DMC popped off too … that was on MTV, like that was the first time I really SAW Hip Hop
…………………………………………………………………..
Fell in Love with Hip Hop
But I truly fell in Love w/ Hip Hop in 1984
I was over my Grandmother’s house and my Uncle had the UTFO “Hangin’ out” Single and on the B Side there was a song called “Roxanne Roxanne” I played that joint and thought it was extra dope because of how they all rhymed about the same chick, 3 different styles, having fun and the beat was sick … plus the scratching I loved it
But then …
I Heard Roxanne’s Revenge by Roxanne Shante (btw my 2nd Fav Hip Hop Song of all time)
She was 14 and the whole joint was freestyle! The way that beat dropped and hearing Shante’s cracky Voice spit and go hard on the three guys that made the original joint … like legit beef style lol I was wrapped up in it! I LOVED that song That summer I’d put it on my mother’s stereo put the speakers up in the window and go outside and kick it… sit and write rhymes We’d play bullshit games or whatever but I rocked that joint to death! I still do to this day … Roxanne’s Revenge always makes me happy
The song was SO dope it started The “Roxanne Wars” like one of the most influential times in Hip Hop … go Google it!
