Bramblestar giving nightheart, firestars warrior suffix. Like, as pissed off as he was and as surprised by flamepaws outrage as everyone else was. Bramblestar gave nightheart a much better name while still keeping the inspiration for his birthname. Okay i think i said that bad. Bramblestar gave nightheart the perfect compromise. He gave nightheart a name that suited him much better, as he wished for, while still keeping theme of his heritage present. Nightheart is a nice name, i like it. and im sure everyone knows firestar was once called fireheart. but he wasn’t visually recognised for his heart, it was his orange pelt that made him iconic (and among other things). because of this nightheart, when flamepaw, felt so constricted and bound by being named after a cat he looks nothing alike. which is understandable, because he felt expected to live up to all expectations and be perfect all because of a name he had no say in and one he couldn’t relate to at all. Now, im really not the best at explaining things i feel like im repeating myself, but, being named after that same cat, instead of how he looked but how he acted, gives nightheart a new chance and doesn’t release nightheart of those restrictions. Nightheart gets what he wants and gets a name that visually suits him. and now has to look at his name differently, the cat he was named after has so many tales and legends about how he was such a great and kind cat and hear nightheart is, barely a warrior. not heroic, not a great cat, just nightheart. and hopefully now he isn’t being compared to what firestar achieved but how he achieved it. while he was strong fireheart was kind and compassionate. Nightheart might learn to appreciate fireheart and not firestar.

i’m sorry for being mean but god it’s so exhausting to see people continually treading out “well i relate to him” in discussions about nightheart as if it changes anything about the writing choices the author’s intentionally chose to make. “as a person who has [insert comparison to nightheart’s arc here]” like yeah okay you wanna make this personal then well As a person who knows what it’s like to live around entitled men with main character syndrome,

but i’d like to add when people talk about Nighthearts name change and how its Good/bad because its similar to trans people having deadnames and going by a new name.
i just feel like that’s completely irrelevant to the actual story, He changed his name because it didn’t suit him at all and he was insulted that he was expected to live up to the name he had against his choice. Flamepaw, Who is an all black cat, wanted a name that would better represent what he actually looks like and not the name of a dead cat he didn’t know or look like.
TL:DR - People compare nighthearts name change to something it isn’t, and therefore view the writing of his character incorrectly.
Okay okay, I’m not reading the preview im just gonna wait for the actual sky book. BUT i will have an opinion stated.
A lot of people are hinting that nightheart reeks of trans discretion, He is queer coded/ Queerbait etc
And you know, im all for it, Go be the representation you wanna be, Nightheart is symbolic all that.
But Thats not the reason why i like him, I love him because he is the only character that actually fights for a name that makes sense for them!!!!
I dislike all this shit name stuff warriors has going on, Dont get me wrong the names are cool, but they dont suit half the cats they belong to and do not paint a good picture of the cat at all especially when the erins basically refuse to describe anyone that isn’t a brown tabby.
What im saying is, Nighthearts name change makes sense, and i love that, his name matches his looks.
And i can hear people saying “cats shouldn’t be named after how they look” and sure, believe that.
But if they weren’t why are they all given a noun as their name. A literal thing. Why are they named after something else if they dont look like it.
I love names like firestar, sandstorm, dustpelt greystripe etc because they give a very clear image of what that cat looks like, Without needing to describe them! The erins do such a poor job of elaborating background characters and giving them descriptions that they are just completely happy to give a cat a name and not tell you their fur colour till 8 books later.
If you aren’t going to describe/develop a character in the series at least give them a name that suits them.
And i am bias to this myself, i love the name ivypool but she looks nothing like a pool of ivy, she isn’t a deep wet green cat, but she is elaborated on, she is a main character and she is described countless times. The book gives you a pretty clear image of what she looks like despite her funny name. Which is good! Its perfect! and there are other cats like this!
but when a cat is named after something that is the completely opposite of them (Blackstar for example) it sort of ruins the point of naming cats after things.
blackstar, Granted, was called blackfoot. but that was when he was a warrior, When he was born and as an apprentice he was called black kit/paw when he is all white except for black feet/foot which leads into my next point.
Seeing as cats change appearances as they grow why not let their names change to suit they’re appearance, Cats were more than happy to do that when it was for the worse, Halftail,Lostface etc. so why not just do it for better now?
Nightheart makes so much more sense than flamepaw/heart (Assuming he would keep the same suffix) for an all black cat.
