Women We Admire: Amy Richards

Most popularly known for her book Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism and the Future and as the voice behind Ask Amy, an online advice column she has been running since 1995, Amy Richards is a visionary, an activist and truly an inspiration. Richards is a primary spokesperson for issues of gender, sexuality and class.

Richards has appeared on Oprah, Charlie Rose, The O’Reilly Factor, Talk of the Nation, New York One and CNN. She is the co-founder of Third Wave Foundation, an organisation that raises money for young activists. She is also the president of Soapbox: Speakers Who Speak Out, a feminist lecture agency. She has initiated projects such as I Spy Sexism and Why Vote? amongst many others.

Richards said in an interview with Makers, “I think we all have something in our life’s experience that makes us feel different, and it’s something that we feel bad about, initially, because we think we’re abnormal. What’s abnormal is our assumption that there’s something called normal.” Apart from being a paramount visionary and leader, she is also a former NCAA Division I soccer player, a four-time marathon runner, an enthusiastic world traveler, and a proud mom of two sons.

Women We Admire: Anne-Marie Slaughter

An academic, foreign policy analyst and public commentator, Anne-Marie Slaughter is the president and CEO of New America Foundation, a nonpartisan think tank. Previously, she was Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor Emerita of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University and dean of Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

Slaughter served as the first female director of policy planning at the U.S. State Department for two years, at the end of which she was surprised to find herself declining more stints in the department. “I had just finished a big, 18-month project for Secretary Clinton, successfully, and I knew I could handle a bigger job. The woman I thought I was would have said yes.” But Slaughter made a “decision based on love and responsibility” when she decided to go back home. She says in her TED talk, “I didn't want to miss the last five years that my sons were at home. I finally allowed myself to accept what was really most important to me.”

Her decision to not go back to Washington was met with mixed responses. What began as an article for The Atlantic – Why Women Still Can’t Have It All, eventually graduated to Unfinished Business, a revolutionary book that stands against what Slaughter refers to as  “motherhood penalty” – the punishing route to professional success for women.

Women We Admire: Bettina Sherick

Sherick is the founder of Be.InTouch Advisors and former Senior Vice President of 20th Century Fox International. She is “fascinated by the impactful ways that digital continues to change the way people connect, communicate, and consume.” Sherick is a risk-taker, a woman who is intensely passionate about what she does—winning, leadership qualities we applaud and find extremely inspirational.

She was honored as Internationalist of the Year in 2010, and is the recipient of the 2011 iMedia Visionary Entertainment Marketer Award. Sherick also authored a chapter on digital history in  the book Digital State: How the Internet is Changing Everything. A passionate speaker about international digital marketing, she was a featured presenter at the 2010 IAA World Congress in Moscow. She holds an MBA from Claremont Graduate University and a degree in Economics from the University of California, Davis.

Sherick launched her first marketing and e-commerce shopping site in 1997 while serving as marketing manager at Strouds, Inc. She then worked as director of e-commerce marketing for Warner Bros Studio Store. From there, she moved on to Fox. In her 14 years there, she pioneered Digital Marketing and ensured the company’s position at the forefront of innovative marketing. She managed international digital marketing campaigns for over 100 films, including Avatar, The Fault in Our Stars, Life of Pi, Rio, the entire X-Men franchise, Ice Age franchise and The Simpsons Movie.
