witch hat atelier kitchen is so funny because with qifrey its always "the girls! i have to cook and feed the girls because it is my responsibility!!" and then olruggio comes out of his room at four in the morning like "im so fucking hungry"

one of my fav theories i've seen people talk about is the idea that olruggio uses a variation of the phantasmal fireball to burn the silverwood out of qifrey. a fire that doesn't burn humans, but burns wood.

and thinking about that makes me view this panel with a lot of interest.

because why is olruggio in this panel? if you follow the flames of the phantasmal fireball, it's traveling across the panel to custas, who is also afflicted with a silverwood. it looks like custas is burning from olruggio's fireball. you can even see the smoke billowing out from the flames as the roots go wild.

it makes sense to see olly's fireball since custas is talking about who gets to decide which magic is allowed and we see olruggio talking about why he can't sell his fireball cause it's dangerous. however, we're seeing a fireball that isn't supposed to burn people take hold of custas. it's also burning custas without causing injury though so maybe that's bc that fire is going to the silverwood? olruggio will cure custas of the silverwood just like qifrey.

i hope that's what this is foreshadowing anyway bc olly burning the silverwood with his fireball is simply the coolest option.

the dissonance between ch. 39 olruggio and the typical olruggio we're used to seeing is so insane like his emotional intelligence and social awareness is unmatched in ch.39. he's actually so impressive lmao.

to start he reads between the lines and immediately clocks the issue with turning the glowstones blue. without the princess having to explicitly tell him.

his charm is off the charts here getting the princess to trust his plan and getting her on board to help him sell it. dropping a knee, all deference.... omg....

he shows a crazy amount of confidence to navigate a pissed off king (who has already yelled at olly for helping out the townspeople when the king is the one paying him). like olly's on thin ice here.

you wouldn't blame a witch for feeling nervous in this situation, for being intimidated by this powerful, rich king. however olly moves with confidence and ease. "this will suffice" is bold, assertive. like... hey, olly.... *tucks hair behind ear*

this grumpy old rich man is already pissed and olly's next move is to dance with his daughter lmao what an insane choice. like... he could just step on the stones and show her dad how it works but no he chooses to make it a show. a performance.

it works wonders and he wins over the grumpy old man AND charms the princess. his clever idea works AND he has the ability to sell it.

the princess is so won over by his intellect and charm that she's like pls stay forever. (very real of her.)

which is another potentially awkward social situation, but olly handles it with poise and grace. he denies the princess' request without offending her. they end up on the same side.

that olruggio of the torch mask is powerful as hell. he navigates multiple complex, potentially awkward social situations with grace and poise.

and then you compare chapter 39. olruggio with... this... olruggio.....

Every time I see someone call Qifrey, Olruggio or any other male witch from WHA a "sorcerer" or "wizard" or "mage" I wanna screech THEY ARE WITCHES!!! W I T C H E S ! ! ! Witch is not a gendered term [neither is warlock btw since we're at it], it is neutral. A male witch is a male witch, not a wizard or sorcerer or warlock. Those are also. Literally different things from witches. A wizard learns from books, a sorcerer or sorceress posesses an inherent magical talent or ability since birth, and a warlock was given their magical ability by an entity or greater force [in fantasy media - warlock means "betrayer of the covenant" I believe if we're looking at real world etymology. Anyways]

EDIT: This is not just an issue I have with fans, but also with official translations! The German dub of the anime and the German Translation of the manga both use terms that do not mean witch - the manga calls female witches 'Hexen' and male ones 'Zauberer' and the anime in an attempt to find a gender neutral term went with 'Magier' which means mage, not witch. Also! This post was more a general "grrrr people please stop using witch as a gendered word" thing and most definitely NOT a callout at any one specific person! This is an issue with other witchy media as well, and the last thing I wanna do is cause stupid fighting in the fandom space. I am just a hery passionate anthropologist who is tired of 'witch' being wrongfully gendered is all

I genuinely didn't think anything of this little exchange at first. Maybe it's because I fell for Hiehart's 'silly little guy' energy.

The "sounds reasonable enough" felt more, not dimissive, but like it had never occurred to him. Like he took Jujy on without thinking about what he would do if something conflicted with his responsibility to her. And I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't:

This man acts on instinct. You're lucky if he thinks half a step ahead before acting. So to see him actually trying to plan is so 'oh shit he knows this is serious'. The mask is fucking gone.

This man done been knew exactly what he was gonna do even before Olruggio said anything.

I fell for my favorite trope. That's on me. And I really should stop being surprised. Because gd I love when the unserious character suddenly gets serious. I will never complain even if my heart drops every fucking time.
