I can’t believe I did that to him. SEMANTIC ERROR (2022), Episode 4

‘Sangwoo hates the color red. Also, he absolutely hates my guts’
hyung count: idek 🤡
at the beginning of ep7, after jaeyoung & sangwoo have had a few drinks, when sangwoo goes "can i be frank?" he's actually prompting yaja time, which is essentially a korean concept that flips seniority (i.e. the younger individual drops formal speech whereas the older gains it). and jaeyoung goes along with it, entertaining the idea by his drunk junior.
because korean language itself is rooted in separating speech into politeness & familiarity, especially from someone younger/less experienced, the person who is "superior" has more leeway with addressing whoever is below them. when they go into yaja time, sangwoo calls jaeyoung by his full name without any honorifics, no switch between "sunbae" or "hyung" to cause himself confusion. on the other hand, jaeyoung repeatedly calls sangwoo "hyung" and reinforces the sense of familiarity he wants to keep with sangwoo. whatever sangwoo is saying is unfiltered, and jaeyoung finds it amusing, agrees with whatever jab against him without argument.
"you're lucky you're good looking," sangwoo mutters, and jaeyoung leans closer, responds, "do you really think so, hyung?" the question makes sangwoo push him away, annoyed, but it's not an answer.
when jaeyoung returns to regular speech, asking, "am i good looking, sangwoo?" and sangwoo replies softly, "yes, you're really good looking, hyung," that's the nail in the coffin.
