Some unsolicited advice for those who might benefit from it: If you meet someone who indicates, in conversation or through life choices, that he or she prefers to have sex with men, or women, or both, or no one at all, please take them at their word. After scrutinizing and considering that person’s hair style, clothing, mannerisms, opinions, timbre of voice, dance moves, gait, and fingernails, you may believe they should be fucking someone very different than whoever it is they currently do. And if they are celibate, you might be convinced that is a mistake, too. If your acculturation has been rigid and your experience narrow, it’s probable that you do occasionally meet such people—people who don’t live up to your expectations. If this is your plight, please don’t pay any attention to yourself. If you think there is such a thing as “gaydar” and that you have it, there isn’t and you don’t. And, if you cannot or will not overlook your own confusion, please keep it to yourself. Don’t quiz that person or their friends about their sexual orientation or choices. Never insinuate that you know better than they do about what it is they like or should do. It’s very offensive.
