the thing widow's bay does with the final girl is super interesting to me. i don't have fully formed thoughts and i feel like i should know more about the horror genre to truly convey them, but it's just this thing where the final girl is any age and she's everywhere. the story doesn't end with her overcoming the obstacle, her life continues, and how do you continue after the impossible has happened to you? patricia is the clearest archetype, she survived as a teen only to still be the final girl in her 40s after a lifetime of dragging rumors and shame after her for having survived in the first place. she never stopped being that final girl! ruth is another one. she is elderly and survived a life of pain and loss, only to be the moral compass of the story as the final girl in the warren bloodline. everyone wanted to dismiss her because old birdies like her seem so unimportant, only to be the most important piece of all. sarah westcott was also a final girl of sorts, tasked to be warren's last wife and his downfall. she had to crawl through mud and take charge of children she didn't even know to try and save herself and a town (she didn't even belong to!) plagued by her husband's arrogance. warren's daughter frances was also a final girl. she endured the literal extermination of all her family and survived the drowning and lived long enough to have children even though the man who took care of her never treated her as a person. over and over again, women survive and endure in widow's bay. like even after her attack, lauren survived, even if not of sound mind, and became the wife in the attic asylum amidst pain and loss. but she endured, she thought of her son every second, she was trying constantly to reach out to him. there's just a lot of resilience from specifically the women in widow's bay. even the name of the island, it points at a woman who outlasted her husband. it's all final girls. we're all final girls. and we never stop being final girls.

I love Universal Basic Income but I need people to promote it in addition to other solutions and not as a substitute for them.

"Corporation stole your life's work? Well if there were UBI you wouldn't mind!"

"Robot stole your job? With UBI you wouldn't need your job!"

"Not enough help for disabled people? If we all had UBI that would replace disability payments!"

"Corporations conglomerating into a few huge unregulatable cartels which hike up the prices of everything forever? Just tax them and do UBI!"

Like, yes UBI would certainly help those problems. I'm not at all saying it wouldn't.

But if we do not actually fix society in a few key ways, we're going to end up right back where we are now.

For instance, if we had UBI nationally (instead of just in test areas), these big colluding megacorporations would simply raise the prices of everything to recapture the money. The only limit in the money they extract from us right now is how much we have. If we had more, they'd take more, and monopoly gives them the ability to do that efficiently.

UBI isn't going to hire a special ed teacher in my kid's school or make your apartment ADA compliant.

UBI shouldn't be a consolation prize for destroying a job someone loved. Humans like to work, and we like to benefit from our own work. I do not want to have my industry demolished to be done worse by a word salad machine, and be compensated by a check.

And of course, with corporations so huge they can buy politicians, they will soon vote the taxes down and UBI back out.

We need, for starters:

robust anti trust

money out of politics

regulations that protect ordinary people without a lawyer

I could go on and on but I think I've made my point. UBI and other laws and systems that promote justice, not just one or the other.

i love how the government can go "we are purposefully going to stop tracking and measuring the harm done by this disease" and everyone just falls in line instantly like "uh oh, we don't have enough information to speculate!" like yeah they knew you would say that. that's why they did it. they know that limiting the amount of information we are able to even have at all is an instant potion of "general public will assume anyone who thinks this is important is crazy conspiracy theorists" lmao

A reminder to my self and all of you: you can, and should make customer complaints on behalf of staff.

Like last week, I had to mail a package and my local USPS was absolutely SWEALTERING. And the staff only had a few fans, some of which they were using faced towards customers, to try and keep us cool.

While doing my transaction, I was chatting with the worker about how crazy this was and how I hoped she had her own fan too, because I could only see the customer-benefit ones. She said yes, but I also asked if there was anyone I could complain to on her behalf and she immediately said yes again and to please do it! She wrote a more direct customer service number on my receipt which I was able to call Friday.

To be clear, I was kind and polite; I stressed how good the workers at this office were and how efficient always: "It's my local post office," but also how unbearable the heat was and how I couldn't imagine MY poor local staff having to suffer in that heat all day. I don't know yet if it will have an immediate effect for the workers, I hope it will though.

It's a move I haven't pulled much recently, but it was a good reminder for me that I can. I can put on my best assertive-Karen-for-good voice and bitch at companies and corporations to take care of their staff because why would I keep going to them if they don't? I know Post office is a little different, but all the more reason for me to take a vested interest as I pay for them with my taxes! Use my money to get those hard-working folks some goddamn aircon!

I love when people try to gotcha me on my stance that all sports should be gender integrated with "even American football???" because I can instantly come back with "oh lmao, no, I don't think ANYONE should play American football at all, it's way too dangerous" like nice try but I know no amount of testosterone is going to protect you from the profound, life ruining health issues caused by getting repeated severe concussions over the course of several years. No one should play this sport.
