Coincidentally this episode has one of my all-time favourite Torichan outfits. A brown jumpsuit with bubblegum pink socks and nothing else. So cute.

Babachan begins this week’s commentary by mentioning the blandness of Yuudai’s breakfast soup. But nothing could be less bland than her bright and maximalist outfit. Leaving behind the previous outfits natural prints and vintage silhouettes, she opts for a modern persimmon tunic with mother of pearl button detail and pin-tucked sleeves and bodice. Her ever present contrasting stockings are teal today, and match nicely with Yu’s teal plastic ski pants. Along with her signature stockings she is also wearing an iconic silk floral headscarf that brings in some pattern to break up the bigger blocks of color. Her jewelry is the one piece that brings just a hint of traditionalism to the outfit. Suspended gold cloisonné bead earrings and a gold chain and pearl necklace are updated classic pieces that are still fun enough to match with Babachan’s M.O.  Her look is polished off with a neutral taupe manicure and natural makeup. Although she was quieter this episode, her outfit did not disappoint and it makes one wonder what colorful jabs she is keeping to herself when the panel is talking on without her.

In her second outfit of the series, Babachan continues in the vein of the previous episode.  Her loose, cool-tone floral dress is almost a photonegative to the previous episodes outfit. The delicate floral print and indigo blue hue are reminiscent of kasari fabric and it fits well with the more traditional vibe that this season gives. The yellow stockings are present again and tie this look together with the previous episode’s outfit, unifying her overall fashion concept. Here again Babazono’s accessories complete the look. Camouflaged by her dress, another ceramic bead necklace adds texture without upsetting the color scheme. A pair of gold and onyx cabochon earrings provide a spot of luxury that elevates an otherwise earthy ensemble. The black of the earrings creates an eye catching contrast to the brown shades carried throughout her outfit. And finally Babachan’s signature hairpiece makes it’s season debut and this one is a particular stunner. An oversized tiered wrap of chunky knit wool, Persian blue velvet and a chocolate satin bow top off a perfect outfit. It is her hairpieces that often distinguish Babachan from the other female panelists style and create a look that is completely her own. 

Overall these first two looks set a strong foundation for the overall themes of this season. They represent the changing seasons, the warmth and beauty of the house in its natural setting, and the desire to be one’s self while still catching the eye of those who may take notice.

Here Babachan starts off the new season ‘Opening New Doors’ with a simple yet meaningful dress. With the warm orange of a fading autumn offsetting a field of white winter flowers, her dress reflects the changing of the season and hints at the winter beauty that will soon take over the small ski resort town of Karuizawa. Just as she suggests that the chilly winter days ahead would bring the new members closer together in their cozy surrounding, Babachan herself brings warmth to the panel room with her 70’s inspired prairie dress with pleated front bodice and thin black tassel belt. Her accessories here are simple, but hint at Babachan’s flair for the unusual. Copper leaf shaped earring with large ice blue rhinestones again reinforce the theme of changing seasons while adding a sense of whimsy that offsets the more mature style of the dress. She continues her sense of playfulness by donning a ceramic bead necklace that looks as though it has soccer balls on it. Perhaps this foreshadows the goal scoring quip she earns by asking Tokui if they were in the Edo period after his somewhat unsophisticated bathroom humor. Babachan’s hair is uncharacteristically free of one of her iconic headpieces and is swept back in lovely natural curls. However she is not without her most important garment. She sports a pair of shocking electric yellow tights that break all conventional color combinations and suggest that although she is starting simply there is much more still to see from Terrace House’s most stylish panelist.
