I’ve been putting it off for so long, but I finally started the latest season... Terrace House: Opening New Doors! Yosha!
I’ve missed this show so much. That shibui picture quality, the awkwardness of Japanese people in everyday life, the subtle but dramatic editing, how all the little banal gestures in life suddenly has a meaning. Watching this show made me miss Japan, made me feel like I’m back in Japan, and made me realize so many things I didn’t necessarily understand when I was in Japan.
More than anything, I’ve missed these commentators the most. I feel so at home every time I see them. I too, want to sit around that coffee table and make silly observations. Torichan’s moral policing, YOU’s dirty grandma antics, Yamachan’s hate for everything, and of course, my favourite, Tokui. His funny fantasized scenarios, his ability to come up with such silly but on-point metaphors. This show wouldn’t be what it is without any of them (sorry Babachan and the revolving sixth panelist are both expendable). Few things in life gets me this addicted. Welcome back, Terrace House!
