đĽheather mac
Iâm always super vocal about my hatred of the fandomâs woobified redeemed mac characterization, so Iâll move onto something yâall are REALLY gonna hate:
I donât think Mac was suicidal! Sheâs a follower, she calmly explains on the phone to the radio show host (a show she knows Duke and Veronica hang out and listen to, to make sure they know what sheâs doing) that sheâs failing math, she doesnât think sheâll make it to Head Cheerleader, âher parents are divorced and stuffâ, normal teen stress, and sheâs looking around at the popular kids sheâs based her ENTIRE popularity on copying, seeing them killing themselves to cope with their problems, and decides she needs to do the same. Sheâs not super emotional about it, even when actually doing it. The most emotion we see is her getting frustrated with the childproof caps. Ofc this isnt true in the musical, sheâs super emotional, but yâall know I think the musical wrote mac and duke super ooc. The official description of the movie is LITERALLY about suicide becoming a trend because of Chandlerâs suicide, and in order for that to be true there has to be evidence of it within the movie, right? Kurt and Ram donât count, theirs were faked. So Mac and Marthaâs attempts are the instances of kids following the new hot fad that weâre given. You could even take the fact that neither of their suicides, suicides which were mostly about them just following the popular kidsâ leads, are successful and correlate some meaning there. Martha has more reasoning behind her suicide, probably has experienced depression and considered it before, which is why she is closer to success, but at the end of the day sheâs still doing it out of inspiration from the first three.
A word
Itâs really important that theatre teens who are just now coming into fandoms like Falsettos and Rent understand how important it is to not popularize AUs where the character(s) who died of AIDS are still alive and all is well. No, that character really did die of AIDS and youâre right, it wasnât fair. Yes, their families and friendships really did suffer from it. Yes, it was painful. But even though these facts make you sad or uncomfortable, the purpose of these musicals was to bring a reality check to everyone who was denying them.
The AIDS crisis was an epidemic that occurred right in front of millions of Americans, most of whom turned their head and wanted to pretend it didnât exist because of who it was affecting. In their eyes, this was gay men (the fact that straight men and women also got this disease seemed to slip their mind, I guess). These shows like Rent and Falsettos forced them to look at reality and see the pain of every person who had to watch their friend, family member, or lover die in their arms while nobody was doing shit about it.
I love fun AUs and ideas just as much as the next person, but please, please donât let the message of these shows deteriorate underneath a shiny fix-it bandaid alternate universe. The AIDS crisis wasnât as long ago as it may seem, people still struggle with this disease, and back in the times of these shows, it was a death sentence. Intense homophobia still exists. There are people in power who, given another chance today, still wouldnât have done shit about the AIDS crisis.
Please understand the power of what you do when you overlook the message of these shows. America denied everything in the shows like Rent and Falsettos for years, so please try your hardest to not become a person who shares their mindset. Please donât look away from the stories of the LGBTQ+ community that the rest of the world didnât care about.
I really appreciate this post, as I think the Falsettos and Rent fandoms often need reminders that âuwu my little gaybies diedâ and âAIDS THE MUSICALâ arenât okay and that AIDs was and is a major problem for the LGBT+ community.Â
Rent, as some people might not know, was the first time that someone suggested the very idea that there is a life outside of disease. That your life doesnât end with a diagnosis. People told Larson (the writer) that he was insane and ridiculous and it would never make it to Broadway.
The AIDs crisis is one of the most serious things in the world. That said, there isnât necessarily anything wrong with fix-it aus. I think that theyâre a sign of hope- that one day, the Angels and Whizzers wonât die. When you see yourself in fiction, you donât want to see that character die. I think, when done correctly, these AUs can be a testament to the sort of people that people can become, if given the chance.Â
In the 80s and 90s, the government didnât give a fuck about people with AIDs and sort of ignored the problem. Thatâs twenty years that could have given government funding to finding a cure.
I see âfix it ausâ (like I said, when done correctly), as a tribute to those who couldnât be âfixed. Itâs rare to find gay musical theatre where the LGBT people survive. Until more people create that theatre, thereâs very little wrong with reviving your gays (as opposed to burying your gays).
Love is a fault; so be it.
