There aren’t many directors whose works are a genre unto themselves. David Lynch is one of them.

TWIN PEAKS was my first love. I was 13. Biking to school every morning, I’d listen to the TWIN PEAKS soundtrack on my Walkman. (It’s not just the TWIN PEAKS soundtrack: it’s the soundtrack of my early teens.) In time, the batteries would slowly run out, and the music would slow down to this bizarre, nightmarish mass. Intrigued, I started to look forward to it happening eventually, anxiously detecting the first signs when that monstrous slow-mo darkness set in. A very Lynchian thing to do for a 13-year-old really, I’m thinking now.

Lynchian. How many artists’ names can be used as an eponymous adjective like that? Lynchian—it immediately conjures up images, expectations, fears. Lynchian terror. Lynchian quirkiness. Lynchian surrealism. His name can be used as a shorthand for all sorts of things, weird, scary and funny. But mostly, for that rare thing: fascinating art. Fascinating, uncompromising, beautiful art.
