Dadeland Mall is significant in the annals of crime history, as it was the site of a violent, public battle in broad daylight between two narco gangs in 1989, which involved automatic weapons and grenades. This was such an extreme and intolerable display that the Feds, comfortable with looking the other way, finally started to crack down on the nearly 1 trillion in drugs that flowed through the city through the 80s. This brought an end to the city’s Cocaine Cowboy era.
