Bulk Buying
I was going to wait to post this, but this has been a struggle. The same day I went to farmers market I also tried my hand at bulk buying grains. I was so disappointed at how little options there were for zero waste bulk buying in my city. There is a huge store near me that has a huge bulk buying area, but they refused to let me bring in my own containers or bags for the items. I understand the reasoning they had but it was still disapointing. I had luck at Sprouts and once there I had a great and easy experience. I was able to get some salt, red lentils, oats, and some raw almonds. I am going to continue to keep searching for more environmentally friendly zero waste options around me. My next goal is to find spices in bulk. Wish me luck. Also any advice would be very much appreciated.
The Journey Begins
I have recently been inspired to start living a Zero Waste lifestlye. I have done some research and throughout the week gathered things around my house. So yesterday I ventured off to the local farmers market and brought along my reusable bags, produce bags, and glass jars.
My first farmers market was so disappointing and a little disheartening. I had seen signs for it around my town and was really looking forward to going to it. But once I got there I didn't see many vendors there and sadly only one vendor that sold veggies. So after leaving with some kale and spinach that was too beautiful to leave I got in my car to regroup. I did a quick Google search and found another farmers market 3 mins away.
The best way to describe this other farmers market that it as homey. The market was set up on the side of the road. But all the vendors were extremely nice and I got some great squash, gouda cheese, eggs, and goats milk lotion. So it inspired my to once again do some googling and found a larger indoor market. I was able to get some great tomatoes, sweet potatos, and avocados there as well as some honey.
For some reason I remember how when I was younger my parents would always take us to the flea market to walk around and it always had fruit and produce vendors there. So I decided to drive to it and here is where I found the most luck. My goodness the beautiful onions, bananas, cilantro, plums, cucumbers, limes, and some prickly pear, that are the fruit from cactus plants. Going to so many markets sees excessive but I took at as a learning experience.
One that most people don't care if you don't want plastic bags, just make sure to tell them or they will give you one. Actually one of the vendors actually thanked me.
Two that going back to your roots can surprise you. I'm Mexican and so my mom reminded my that shopping with your own bags and containers is how people used to shop. This is not a new concept but one for sure that have all moved away from.
The whole point is that even though it was not a great beginning it ended up being a great experience that continued to inspire me.
