Today is Father's Day, normally it would be an ordinary day, but this one's a little different.
As I'm walking through the halls, I look at everyone, laughing, hugging without a care in the world. I sigh, then I see him. "Can I talk to you?" I ask. "sure" he replies. I wait a moment, "alone" I state, he rolls his eyes "Fine" and we walk off to a secluded area of the school. My dorm room.
He sits on my bed as I close and lock the door, "Do you remember that night, at the sorority house?" I question. He sits up all smug-like and says "Yeah, how could I forget?" he chuckles.
"This isn't funny Max" I argue. He stands up and puts his hands on my hips, "What's wrong?" He asks with the look of concern and worry in his eyes.
I quickly shrug his hands off walk to my desk and throw a white thin stick with a pink cap on it to him. He looks at the solid double red lines and looks at me. "Happy Father's Day Max" I state with tears threatening to fall. He backs up to my bed and slowly slides down to the floor, I know I should worry about how I feel about this, but I can't find it in me right now, he has his whole life ahead of him.
I slowly walk over and sit right in front of him with my hands on his knees, "You Okay?" I ask. A few moments go by, and the awful silence is deafening. "when did you find out?" he questions. "Yesterday," I say "Okay, what are we going to do?" he whispers. "honestly?" I ask "Honestly," he says. "um, well I know that I want to keep this baby, but I'm worried for you" I admit. "ME!?" he exclaims, "why are you worried about me?"
"Because!" I pause and take a deep breath "Because I don't want to ruin any chances you have for football and for any other things you want to do in life, like acting. I don't want you to feel like you're going to be held ba-" he kisses me passionately before saying "I don't give a damn about my career, I want to be here in this babies life, and yours. I love you" he states.
I can feel the tears running down my cheeks before I realized I was sobbing, "I love you, Max, so much" I say as his arms are pulling me into him. "we are in this together. forever and always" he says.
"forever and always Max"
A/N: This wasnât requested, but I wanted to start writing for Kelly because I really do love his character! I hope this brings more Chicago Fire fans my way so I can get requests for Kelly and the others! I hope you guys enjoy this! Feedback is welcomed and appreciated! :)
When Kelly was gathering his things to leave, he noticed that you were staring into your locker. Â You had been spaced out for at least ten minutes now. Â Whatever was going on inside your head managed to distract you long enough for the locker room to empty out. Â Severide wasnât sure if something was wrong or not. It was only the two of you and it seemed like a good opportunity to talk.
âHey [Y/N],â Severide called. Â To his surprise, he was able to gain your attention almost instantly. Â He cleared his throat before speaking again. Â âA bunch of us are going to Mollyâs for a drink, you should join us.â
You looked away from Kelly and grabbed your jacket from your locker. Â âI appreciate the offer, but I donât think Iâm in the mood to be social tonight,â you politely declined. Â âIâve got too much on my mind right now. Â I think Iâll go home and try to relax.â
âAre you sure,â Kelly asked. Â He paused and took a step towards you. Â âYou know if somethingâs bothering you, you can talk to me about it. Â Iâm not going to judge you.â
âNo, Kelly, itâs fine,â you spoke, your voice hushed. Â âEveryone has their own problems and Iâm not going to dump mine on you. Â Thatâs not fair to you.â
This was requested by anon: 92. âNobodyâs perfect.â With Kelly Severide? I hope you guys enjoy this! :)
(gif is mine)
Kelly found you in front of the mirror. Â He saw your eyes dart around as you studied yourself. Â The expression on your face was not a good one. Â You seemed displeased with your appearance. Â You didnât even turn around when you opened your mouth to speak.
âWhy do you like me Kelly,â you asked. Â Your eyes flickered over to the lieutenant who was visible in the mirror. Â âI mean surely you see what I see. Â Youâre not blind.â
Severide walked up behind you and brought his arms around your front. Â He pressed a kiss to the side of your head before resting his chin on your shoulder. Â âI see what you see, but none of it matters to me,â Kelly said. Â âIt doesnât factor in to how I feel about you either.â
âThatâs sweet, but you canât expect me to believe you like seeing this when you wake up,â you mumbled, frowning at yourself in the mirror.
âNobodyâs perfect [Y/N],â Kelly noted as he planted a kiss to your shoulder. Â âNot everyone thinks Iâm attractive. Â Beautyâs in the eye of the beholder, right?â
You rolled your eyes as you turned around in Severideâs arms. Â âI guess thatâs how the saying goes,â you said with a hint of a smile. Â Your hand came up to cradle Kellyâs face. Â âThank you for loving me, even if I donât like myself sometimes.â
Wind whipped across the water as Squad 3, Truck 81, and Ambulance 61 arrived on scene. A boat had capsized just off the pier â multiple people thrown into the water. Screams echoed as bystanders gathered.
âVictim spotted near the rocks!â shouted a patrol officer.
âSquad with me!â Severide barked, already shrugging on his drysuit.
You knelt beside the dock edge with your trauma kit, reaching for a dazed man who had just been pulled out. He was coughing up water, disoriented, combative.
Jay Halstead, already soaked from dragging him in, leaned over. âWe need to sedate him. Heâs not stable.â
You tried to keep the man calm. âSir, itâs okayâyouâre safe. Youâre out of the waterââ
But he flailed, panicked. And thenâ
CRACK.
His leg shot out in a wild kickâstriking you hard in the temple.
You gasped as the world spun.
Your head hit the edge of the dock.
Then everything went black.
Below the Surface
You sank fast.
Your limbs barely moved. Blood from the gash on your scalp swirled in lazy clouds around you.
Somewhere far above, voices were shouting. Sirens were wailing. But down here, it was quiet.
Your body begged you to surface.
But your mind whispered:
âItâs okay to let go.â
The pain throbbed behind your eyes. Darkness pressed against your ribs.
You wondered: What if I just stayed down here?
You thought of Severideâs laugh.
Mattâs overprotective texts.
Jayâs dumb jokes and coffee runs.
You missed them.
You didnât want to leave.
But maybe it was easier than fightingâŠ
Topside â 17:49
âWHERE IS SHE?!â Severideâs voice cracked as he bolted across the dock.
Jay shoved the combative patient into the arms of two uniforms and spun, panting. âShe went underâhe kicked her. I didnât even see her fallââ
âDiver in the water!â Severide yelled into his radio. âNOW!â
But he didnât wait. He yanked off his coat and dove in.
Matt Casey pushed through the crowd just in time to hear it.
âWhat do you mean she went under? Thatâs my sister!â
Cruz held him back. âTheyâre looking, Matt! Severideâs down there!â
You floated like a puppet without strings.
But thenâ
Strong arms wrapped around you.
You didnât have to open your eyes to know who it was.
You felt the heat of his chest even in the freezing water.
You heard his voice even through the pressure of unconsciousness.
âCome on, babe. Donât do this. I got you.â
He broke the surface with you in his arms.
âCLEAR THE DOCK!â someone shouted. âGET THE STRETCHER READY!â
Back on the Dock â 17:52
They hauled both of you up. Severide didnât let go. He was shouting your name over and over, even as Brett started compressions.
âSheâs in PEA!â she yelled. âWe need to push Epi, start bagging!â
Casey stood frozenâhelmet off, eyes wide in horror.
Jay was next to him, soaked, gripping his shoulder. âTheyâll get her back. You know they will.â
âWhy the hell wasnât I there?â Matt choked out.
Severide knelt beside you, drenched and shaking. âPlease,â he whispered, brushing hair from your bloody temple. âYou donât get to leave me like this.â
The monitor blippedâ
Then again.
And again.
Pulse restored.
Ambulance â En Route to Med â 18:04
Your eyes fluttered. Gurgled breaths. Then a cough.
Severide leaned in, gripping your hand tightly. âHey. Hey. Look at me. Youâre okay. Youâre back.â
You blinked slowly, dazed. âDid I mess up the rescue?â
Jay laughed â watery and strained â from the corner. âOnly a little. But Iâll give you a pass.â
Mattâs voice came through the radio on speaker. âTell her Iâm gonna kill her for scaring me.â
You smiled faintly, then winced. âHead hurts.â
Brett looked back, relieved. âYeah. Thatâs the part where you got kicked in the face, remember?â
Reader has a rude awakening after a night out with her brothers. She calls Jay in a panic.
---
âAnother round?â Jay asked.
âActually, I think Iâm heading out. Iâm beat and Kelly wanted to get breakfast after shift tomorrow.â You stood from the table youâd been sharing with your brothers for the last several hours.
âLame. But, fine.â Jay stood and pulled you into a hug. âYou good to drive?â
You laughed. âI havenât had a drink in over two hours, Detective. I think your observational skills might need a little work.â
He wrapped his arm around your neck in a headlock. âSmart ass. Being too tired to drive is also a thing.â
âYes, Iâm fine to drive.â You started poking him repeatedly in the ribs until he finally released you. âBesides, itâs only like a twelve minute drive.â
Will got up and walked around the table to give you a hug also. âLove you, kiddo.â
âLove you guys, too. Iâll see you tomorrow night?â
âProbably,â Will answered.
âText us when you get home,â Jay hollered after you before you could push open the heavy door of Mollyâs.
You threw a thumbs up over your head as you exited.
As you parked in front of your apartment building, you reminded yourself to text them once you were inside. But as soon as you closed your door, auto-pilot took over. You dumped your keys and purse on the front table like always, then tossed your phone on your bed before heading to the bathroom. Getting ready for bed, you quickly washed your face and brushed your teeth and then threw your clothes on the floor. After putting on a comfy shirt and shorts you climbed into bed.
âOops.â Unlocking your phone revealed two missed calls from Will and three from Jay as well as a text.
Jay: If you donât call me back in 5 minutes Iâm coming over. You chuckled as you read the message. It was from three minutes ago. You clicked the FaceTime icon for Jay.
âAbout time!â He answered.
âSorry. In my head I totally texted you when I got home⊠but forgot to actually do it, apparently.â
He turned the phone around so you could see Will and you waved. âGlad you made it home.â
âYup.â You waved your phone around so they could see your room. âNow Iâm going to sleep. Gânight.â
âSleep tight!â
A loud bang startled you from your sleep. At first you thought it had been a nightmare, until you heard more noises. Grabbing your phone, you scurried off the bed and into the closet. You climbed in between a mountain of dirty laundry and the wall trying to make yourself as small as possible.
Opening your contacts list, you selected Jay and waited as it rang.
âHey, you're supposed to be sleeping,â he teased as he answered the phone. It took you a moment to collect your thoughts, long enough to prompt Jay to speak again. âHello? Did you sleep dial me?â
âS-someone is in my apartment,â you whispered, finally finding your voice.
âWhat?! Are you sure? Where are you? Can you get outside?â Jay peppered you with questions.
âI hear footsteps.â You took a deep breath, trying not to panic.
âWhere are you?â He asked again.
âUh, hiding in my closet.â You whispered, afraid the intruder might hear you.
âIâm coming. Just stay on the phone with me and try to be quiet.â You could hear his truck start and the tires peel out.
You nodded even though he couldnât see you.
âFive minutes,â he told you. Then you heard him talking on his radio. â5021 George, I have an intruder at 1242 Ashland, Iâm six minutes out, I need units there now.â
You heard the radio crackle before Adam spoke. â5021 Ida, Iâm two minutes out from that intruder call.â
âHear that, Y/N? Adam is almost there, okay. Iâll be right behind him.â
You heard the footsteps approaching and then enter your room. Clapping a hand over your mouth and nose, you held your breath and prayed to stay unnoticed.
Seconds later the closet door was yanked open and a flashlight beam illuminated the space. Next thing you knew you were being yanked out of the closet by your hair as you screamed. You vaguely heard Jay shouting your name from your phone as it clattered to the floor.
You kicked out, managing to connect with his knee and make him stumble.
âFuckinâ bitch!â he roared as he lunged for you. You threw kicks and punches as best you could trying to get away from him. Eventually, you fell and he landed a hard kick to your side, knocking the air from your lungs. âI'll kill you, stupid bitch!â
You tried to kick him again but he grabbed your ankle and yanked you back towards him.
âLet her go!â You heard Adam shout before the intruder was yanked away from you.
As soon as you were free, you scurried backwards until your back hit the wall then curled your knees up to your chest and dropped your head. You were trying to make yourself small once again.
Kim finished cuffing him and Adam slowly approached you. He reached out to gently touch your shoulder causing you to flail your arms out still on edge from fighting. âNo! Get off me. D-don't touch me.â
He gently grabbed your wrist to keep you from hitting him. âHey, sweetheart. Itâs just me, itâs Adam.â
You relaxed slightly, locking eyes with him but still trying to cower away from his touch. âW-Where's Jay?â
Seconds later, Jay burst through the front door as he called out for you. He slid to a stop on his knees beside you. You launched yourself into his arms. He hugged you tightly, sighing in relief that you were okay. âI got you. Youâre okay.â He gently pushed you back by your shoulders so he could look at you. His eyes swept over your face, taking in the blooming bruises, the small laceration at your temple, and a split lip. âRuzek, you call an ambo?â
âNo, no, no.â You quickly protested before Adam could answer. âNo ambulance. No hospital.â
âKim did, theyâre on the way,â Adam answered.
Jay shook his head. âYeah, hospital. You gotta get checked out.â
âPlease no. Just Will, please,â you begged. âAnd Kelly. Can you call him, please?â
âYeah, okay,â Jay soothed. âIâll get him.â You heard him whisper to Adam to have the medics stand by in case Will needed them. Then he picked up his phone and dialed Kelly on speaker.
âJay? Itâs 1 am.â Kelly answered, immediately on alert.
âHey, man,â Jay greeted. âSomeone broke into Y/Nâs apartment. Sheâs okay and we arrested the guy but sheâs asking for you. Can you come over here?â
âOh, my god. Youâre sure sheâs okay?â
âI'm fine,â you answered before Jay could.
âMostly. A few bruises and pretty shaken up,â Jay explained as if you hadn't. âWill is on his way here to check her over.â
âOkay, I have to go tell Boden and get squad taken out of service. Should I meet you guys at the hospital?â Kelly asked.
Jay sighed. âNo, just head over here to her apartment. She doesnât want to go unless Will says she has to.â
âAlright, Iâll be there as fast as I can. I'm coming, baby.â He hung up the phone.
Jay pulled you tighter against himself once more. âHe will be here soon. Letâs go sit down on the couch, okay?â
Jay wrapped your blanket around your shoulders then sat down with you. Instantly burying yourself into his shoulder, you didnât realize you were crying until Jay was shushing you. âHe said he was going toââ A hash sob interrupted the thought.
âShh, I got you. Youâre okay. Just breathe.â
You werenât sure how long you sat there, but the next thing you knew Will was sitting on your coffee table in front of you. He cautiously set his hand on your knee. âHey, kiddo.â
Pushing yourself to sit a bit straighter, you responded simply, âHi.â
âCan you tell me what hurts?â His eyes swept slowly over your face as he asked.
âIâm fine. Nothing really even hurts that much.â
He sighed. âYou are probably still in shock. Once the adrenaline wears off, youâre going to feel it.â
He had just started to check if you had any obvious facial fractures when Kelly rushed into the apartment. âOh, god. Sweetheart.â
Standing, you let him pull you into a tight hug. You hiccuped as you started to cry again.
He wrapped his hand around the back of your head, pulling you closer into him. âShh, youâre okay. Youâre safe now.â
After a minute, he released you, both sitting back on the couch so Will could finish. âYou probably have a concussion.â He gently took your right arm in his hands. âDid you punch the guy?â
You nodded. âUh, a couple times, I think.â
âAtta girl,â Jay muttered quietly.
âCan you make a fist?â Will asked. You did as asked. âAnd flatten out your hand.â Again, you did. Or at least you tried. Your pinky wasnât quite where you knew it should be.
You watched as the three of them silently exchanged looks.
Will just nodded. âYour hand doesnât hurt?â
Shrugging, you answered. âUh, itâs starting to a little. But not that bad.â
âOkay, well we are going to Med,â Will told you.
âCan we not?â
Will gave you a sympathetic look. âSorry, kiddo. Your hand is broken andââ
âDo you suddenly have x-ray vision?â You interrupted. âMaybe itâs a sprain.â
âNo, you punched someone and now you canât straighten out your pinky. Definitely broken, itâs called a boxerâs fracture,â he explained. âHopefully, it just needs to be set and casted. We are also going to get a head CT just to be safe.â
âYou said itâs just a concussion!â You whined.
âI said âprobably, just a concussionâ. But weâre getting the scan to be sure.â
âI donât want the ambulance,â you argued.
Will rubbed your shoulder. âThatâs fine. Kelly can drive you and Jay and I will follow. Howâs that sound?â
You sighed and closed your eyes. âCan you do it?â
âDrive you?â Will asked.
âNo. Fix my hand and the CT or whatever.â
Will shook his head. âNo way Ms. Goodwin lets me treat my own sister. I will get Marcel to do it though and we will be there the whole time, okay?â
You took a deep breath to calm yourself. You knew the adrenaline in your system was crashing because everything was starting to hurt. Letting yourself settle into the safe feeling of being surrounded by Kelly and your brothers, you finally agreed. âOkay.â
âAlright. Letâs go.â Will offered you a hand to help you up off the couch.
As soon as all of you were standing, the dizziness started. It was sudden and intense. âWhoa.â
âWhat?â Kelly asked.
You felt yourself sway. âI'm really diââ you tried to explain as the world tilted and went dark.
âOn three,â you heard someone say. âOne, two, three.â You opened your eyes as you were lifted and shifted onto a bed in the ED at Med.
You heard Dr Marcel start ordering tests and Monique and Doris were on either side of you touching and moving your arms. You noticed Will, Jay, and Kelly near the door and suddenly you felt like you couldn't breathe. Your vision started to blur as your breaths came in desperate gasps. It sounded like you were in a tunnel, everything distorted and far away.
Will stepped closer and took your good hand in his, squeezing firmly. You saw his lips moving but couldn't make out the words. Then Kelly moved, he placed his hands on either side of your face forcing your focus to his eyes. You saw the tears welling along his lower lashes. âCome on baby, just breathe.â His voice broke through the haze.
âI-I-I can-can't,â you pushed out through stuttered breaths.
âYes, you can.â He took a slow deep breath, your body naturally trying to follow suit. âJust slow, deep breaths. They don't want to have to sedate you before they assess the concussion. You're safe, I promise.â
You finally managed to slow your breathing and nod. âI'm safe,â you repeated.
Kelly smiled before kissing your forehead. âDoris is just going to check your vitals and Monique is going to start an IV. You know them both, right?â
You nodded. âOkay.â
You managed to stay calm for the next hour as you were poked and prodded, x-rayed, rolled upstairs for a CT scan, and asked what felt like a million questions about what had happened. Kelly sat by your side, holding your hand, for most of that time while your brothers stood nearby but out of the way.
By the time they were done running tests and resetting your hand, you were beyond exhausted. But you couldn't sleep. Every time you closed your eyes you saw his face and jolted awake.
Will and Dr Marcel were standing near the light board talking before they turned their attention back to you. âNo facial fractures or broken ribs and only a mild concussion.â Dr Marcel explained. âI know you're probably tired. You can go ahead and get some rest. We will move you upstairs just for observation until tomorrow.â
Tears welled up in your eyes, you just wanted to go to Kellyâs loft where he could hold you in bed and hopefully you'd finally fall asleep. âCan't I go home? Kelly knows what to watch for.â You weren't above begging.
Dr Marcel shook his head. âJust tonight to be safe.â Will nodded his agreement and you felt a tear slide down your face.
Kelly wiped it away quickly. âIt's just one night, sweetheart. Barely. It's already after 3 am.â
âI know. But I just want you to hold me,â a sob broke free with the last word. âI keep seeing h-him. I can't fall asleep.â
Quicker than you could process, Kelly released the side rail on the bed and shifted in beside you carefully. He pulled you into his chest and peppered kisses across the top of your head. âI can still do that. I'm right here.â
Will came in the door with Monique close behind. You hadn't even noticed him leaving. Monique quickly flushed your IV before pushing medication through the line. âJust something to help you sleep,â Will explained. âTomorrow you can talk to Dr Charles and he can help. Deal?â
Your eyelids fluttered closed moments later. âMmhmm,â you mumbled. âDeal.â
When you woke, the sun was bright through the window. You realized immediately that you weren't in the ED anymore. Kelly was in a chair on your left with his head rested beside your leg on the bed, fast asleep. Jay sat in a chair on your right, scrolling on his phone. And Will was pacing between the door and the foot of your bed.
You took a deep breath and shifted slightly causing pain to shoot through every bruise and sore muscle. âOwww,â you whined, alerting your brothers that you were awake.
Will was beside you in a flash. âWhat hurts?â
You winced. âMight be quicker to tell you what doesn't.â
He ran his fingers softly over the top of your head. âI'll go get you another dose of morphine, okay?â
âYes, please.â You agreed as he headed out of the room.
You lifted your hand and dropped it on Kellyâs head, startling him awake. âHey, sweetheart,â he greeted.
Will came back and pushed the meds. The pain dwindled almost instantly. âYou ready to get out of here?â
You nodded eagerly.
âMarcel is signing your discharge papers as we speak so we can head out here soon,â Will explained.
âI don't want to go back to my apartment,â you told them.
Kelly shook his head. âYou can't anyway. You're coming home with me.â
You shook your head and he frowned. âNo, I mean⊠I don't think I ever want to go back.â
Kelly chuckled. âDo you want to move in with me?â
âI don't want to just because I'm afraid to go back to mine. I don't want to rush into that if you're not ready.â
âI'm ready. We're ready,â he started. âI was planning to ask you before your lease renewed anyway.â
You smiled. âMaybe I should thank that creep for making this happen early.â
âThat's not funny,â Jay chimed in.
âI agree,â Kelly added. âI'm just glad you're okay.â
âUs, too,â Will said. âI never want to see you in here again.
"Not even to have lunch with my favorite brother?" you asked.
"Hey!" Jay protested. "I'm right here."
"Smart ass," Will rolled his eyes. "You know that's not what I meant."

(Some of the lingo might not be exact as I have a terrible memory and can't exactly remember what they usually say so bare with me)
Y/n was on her way to talk to a witness for the upcoming trial date when a call came over the radio "All units, reports of shots fired at 51 Walbash Street, paramedics requesting police assistance".
Y/n frowned, hearing a couple of patrol officers responding, she thought for a second, making a U-turn at the soonest possible chance.
"5021 Charlie, I'm two blocks out, hold me down as responding. Let uniforms know plain clothes on scene" Y/n spoke into the radio, flicking on the lights and sirens as she pressed the gas.
Her vest is in the passenger seat, reaching over she throws it over her head as she drives with her left hand, strapping the vest in process.
"Y/n, I'm 4 minutes away, on my way" Adam's voice comes over her radio used for intelligence.
The car comes to a halt, saying a quick "copy" into her radio to let Adam know she heard him, Y/n scans the scene.
Two uniforms are parked behind the ambulance, a little ahead from where she is. Violet and Novak from firehouse 51 are crouched behind a car across the street, obviously trying to treat a man on the ground.
The shots are coming from an apartment building in front of where Y/n parked. The uniforms are returning fire.
Y/n gets out of her car, staying low as she crouches next to her car.
"Violet! Novak! You okay?" Y/n calls out to her friends.
"Yeah, I have him stable but this guy isn't going to make it if we don't get him to med soon!" Violet shouts back.
Y/n thinks for a moment, trying to figure out how to get the victim out of there safely until they can get the shooter.
"Hey, Wilson! I'll cover you, back your car up and get him into your patrol car and get him to med" Y/n instructs the officer closest to her.
The officer nods, Y/n stands returning fire to the shooter.
It's a few seconds later as she hears more sirens pulling up to the scene when she feels a sharp pain in her side. It's not something she even lets phase her as she hears the patrol car take off, the victim inside.
The shooting stops, probably realized their target was gone.
"Y/n! What's going on?" Adam asks as he comes to her side.
Y/n glances to him, nodding to the building as she crouches behind the car for a second.
"Shooter is in that building, third floor, probably a gang thing-- He stopped shooting once the victim was gone." Y/n explains, to Adam as she glances to Violet and Novak across their street.
"Alright, ready to move?" Adam asks and Y/n nods "Let's go" he pats her shoulder, to which she flinches--the sensation shooting to her side but Adam doesn't notice as they move towards the building.
"5021 Charlie, we are in pursuit of the shooter. Entering the Wake Forest apartments" Y/n rattles off into her radio.
Making their way up the stairs to the third floor, the apartment that matches where the shots were coming from has the door wide open. Adam glances back to Y/n who sends him a nod as they make their way inside.
Adam goes straight as Y/n makes her way into the kitchen, clearing the apartment as she does.
Just as they are about to give up, there's a door slamming in the hallway and foot steps running.
Y/n and Adam take off towards the noise, finding a man in a dark green hoodie running down the stairs, gun in hand.
"Hey! Chicago PD!" Adam announces, running down the steps after him, Y/n right behind him.
"5021 Charlie, Suspect is in a dark green hoodie, he is coming out of the front doors" Y/n announces into her radio to alert the uniforms outside.
When they get outside, Adam and Y/n are thankful to see Kevin holding the man down on his stomach, the gun already kicked away.
Y/n feels relief when she sees the rest of the team there.
"You two okay?" Voight asks, walking up to Adam and Y/n, looking between the two.
"Yeah, all good, Sarge" Adam responds, nodding as he holsters his gun.
Voight glances to Y/n when she doesn't answer.
It's only then, as the adrenaline wears off does she feels the white hot pain in her side. The wetness soaking through her shirt and jacket.
"Y/n? You okay? You look a little pale" Voight has a very concerned tone in his voice.
Adam looks at his partner, really looks at her and he notices how pale she is too.
"My side hurts a little" Y/n says lowly, her hand going to her side. When she takes her hand away, the two men notice the blood soaking it.
At that moment, Jay looks up from his notepad where he was writing notes down from a witness.
He can sense something is wrong in his gut and when she sees Y/n she seems to be off balance and very pale. too pale. His feet are moving before he can even think.
She feels her vision going dark and her body swaying as she hears distant shouting and then it's all blank.
--
"Twenty-eight year old female, gunshot wound to the right abdomen. No exit wound. She's lost a lot of blood, she's stable for now, coded once en route" Violet calls out as the stretcher is wheeled into the ED of Chicago Medical Center.
"Maggie?!" Will calls as he approaches them, snapping a pair of gloves on. Dr. Archer following closely.
"Baghdad's open!" Maggie answers, following to help in.
Will stops as he comes close, seeing his sister in law on the stretcher, her top soaked in blood.
"Y/n?" His voice is quiet and Marcel is already jumping into his place, helping Archer and the nurses transfer them.
Jay is barreling through the ED doors, following after his wife. Will snaps out of it when he sees Maggie trying to keep him back.
"Jay, Jay let them work. They got her, man" Will tries to give his brother a little piece of mind, tho impossible.
"We need to get her in the OR now!"
--
Jay can feel his heart in his stomach as he paces the waiting room that's full of police officers from different units.
He can't think, he can't breathe, he can't function. The rest of the intelligence team is on edge, waiting to know if their friend will pull through.
Adam, Kevin, and Kim sit in the chairs, anxiously waiting.
Adam can't stop staring at the blood on his hands from when he caught Y/n.
Y/n had been his partner on and off for the past 10 years but she was more than that, she was Mack's aunt, his best friend and Kim felt like a sister to her.
Kevin adored her, he felt like Y/n was the only person he could fully open up to all the time, someone he could trust with his siblings and with his life--which Y/n had helped with his siblings more than once over the years.
Voight viewed her like a daughter and Y/n was probably the only one, besides Trudy that had been to his house to check in on him multiple times after the really tough cases.
Jay on the other hand-- Jay was losing his mind, Y/n had been the love of his life since the first day he saw her and he doesn't remember what life was like before that.
Will approaches his brother, pulling him into a much needed hug.
"She's got this, she'll be okay. She's stubborn as hell, we both know it" the red head says quietly, holding on to Jay as he lets out the sobs.
"I can't, I can't lose her Will. I don't know how to breathe without her--what am I gonna do?" It's a serious question, what is he going to do without her?
Will frowns, holding his brother at arms length, a hand on each shoulder.
"Hey, listen to me. She's got the best doctors in there working on her. Me and you both know she is hard headed as hell. Y/n will be okay" Will says sternly, looking his brother in the eyes.
Jay nods, wiping at his eyes. He knows Will's right.
--
It's five hours later when Jay finds himself sitting next to Y/n's hospital bed, his hand gripping hers like his life depended on it.
The only thing you can hear in the room is the sound of the steady beeping from the monitor and the tapping of his foot as his leg bounces.
"She's stable, we removed the bullet, It didn't hit anything major but she'll be sore and has some broken ribs but she should wake up soon" Archer had explained to Jay when they came out of surgery.
He knew that Archer was right but he wouldn't believe she was okay until he sees it for himself.
"J-ay" It comes out broken and raspy but it gets his attention, Jay's head shooting up.
Y/n slowly blinks at him, her head feels heavy.
Jay can feel the relief lifting off his shoulder.
"Hey, hey honey. I'm here" He says softly, the tears of relief and joy slip out as he stands up, never letting her hand go as he kisses her head.
He lingers for a second--not wanting to step away.
"Don't scare me like that again" Jay's voice is desperate and Y/n nods "I won't" she says softly.
There's a knock at the doorframe, both of them turning to see Will in the doorway.
"Well, well, well, look who's awake" The red head jokes as he approaches the other side of the bed "I know you are stubborn as hell and you are independent, but how about next time you let someone know if you're hurt" Will is half teasing but half serious.
Jay raises an eyebrow at his wife, waiting for an answer.
"I promise to let someone know next time, happy Halsteads?" Y/n jokes with a smirk.
"You're a Halstead too, baby" Jay tells her with a chuckle.
"Damn" Y/n mumbles, an amused tone in her voice.
"I'll go let everyone know you're awake" Will says before leaving the room.
Jay looks back at his wife, kissing her forehead again "Thank you for coming back to me".
Warnings: Heavy emotional angst to comfort, post-breakup pining, emotional vulnerability, rain-soaked confessions, happy ending.
Description: It takes losing everything for Kelly to realize that his firewall didnât protect youâit just locked you out in the cold. Surrounded by a silence that has become a tomb, Chicagoâs toughest squad lieutenant finally has to learn how to speak before the ash settles for good.
The silence didn't leave the loft when you did. It stayed behind, expanding like toxic gas, filling up every square inch of the high-ceilinged room until it felt less like an apartment and more like a tomb.
For the first twenty-four hours after the heavy click of the front door, Kelly didn't move much. He survived his shifts at Firehouse 51 on autopilot, moving through the motions of checking the squad truck, running drills, and responding to minor car accidents with a terrifying, robotic efficiency.
"Hey, Severide," Shay had called out to him on the second shift, intercepting him near the turnout gear lockers. Her eyes were sharp, scanning his hollow face with a mix of fury and deep concern. "Y/N is staying at my place. They won't stop crying, Kelly. Not a word from you? Seriously? You're just gonna let them slip away because you're too damn stubborn to talk?"
Kelly hadn't even looked at her. Heâd just grabbed his jacket, slammed his locker shut, and mumbled, "They're better off," before walking out into the bay.
But by the fifth day, the lie he was telling himself started to rot.
He came home to the loft at midnight, the rain still relentless against the glass. He kicked off his boots, and the sound echoed too loudly. He walked into the kitchen, and his eyes instantly locked onto the island. The cold, ceramic coffee mug youâd been holding was still sitting right where youâd left it. He hadn't been able to bring himself to wash it.
Slowly, Kelly walked into the bedroom. He sat on the edge of the mattress, the sheets neatly made and smelling faintly of your laundry detergent, your vanilla perfume. On the nightstand, a small, silver ring youâd forgotten in your rush to pack sat catching the moonlight.
He picked it up, rolling the cheap metal between his calloused fingers.
The dam broke.
It wasn't a sudden burst of tears; it was a crushing, suffocating realization that slammed into his chest like a falling roof. His firewall hadn't protected you from his darkness. It hadn't kept you safe. It had just locked you out in the freezing cold until you had no choice but to walk away to save yourself from freezing to death. He had thought he was being a savior by letting you go, but looking at the empty apartment, he realized he was just a coward hiding behind a badge.
âLook at me, Kelly. Please. Just say something.â Your final, broken plea echoed in his ears, louder than any siren.
Kelly stood up so fast the barstool in the kitchen rattled. He didn't grab a jacket. He didn't grab an umbrella. He shoved your silver ring deep into his pocket, grabbed his truck keys, and ran out the door.
The drive to Shayâs apartment took twenty agonizing minutes through heavy Chicago traffic. The windshield wipers slapped a frantic rhythm against the glass, matching the chaotic, terrified hammering of his heart.
By the time he pulled up to the curb, killed the engine, and sprinted up the concrete steps to the apartment door, he was completely soaked. His dark hair was plastered to his forehead, his shirt was clinging to his shoulders, and his chest was heaving as if he had just dragged a victim out of a third-story window.
He raised his fist and knocked. Hard. Three times.
A moment passed. Then, the lock turned.
The door swung inward, and you stood there. You were wearing an oversized sweatshirt, your hair tied up in a messy bun, your eyes instantly widening in shock. The dark circles under your eyes told him everything he needed to knowâyou hadn't been sleeping either.
"Kelly?" you whispered, your voice instantly cracking as you took in the sight of him. He was dripping water onto the welcome mat, shivering slightly, looking entirely stripped of the cocky, untouchable Squad 3 lieutenant persona.
For a second, the old panic flared in his eyes. The urge to freeze, to mumble a half-baked apology and run back to his truck, clawed at his throat. But he looked at your faceâat the raw pain written in your eyesâand he forced himself to stand his ground.
"Don't close the door," he breathed out, his voice rough, raspy, and desperate. He took a half-step forward, his hands trembling as he reached out, stopping just short of touching your waist. "Please, Y/N. Don't close it."
"Kelly, it's late," you murmured, wrapping your arms tightly around yourself, a defensive shield against the sheer gravitational pull of him. "I can't do this right now. I told you, I can't live in the silence anymore."
"Iâm saying it now," he broke in, his voice cracking violently, a sound so raw it made your chest ache. A tear, hot and entirely separate from the rainwater, slipped down his cheek, cutting a path through the stubble on his jaw. "I'm saying it now, Y/N. I'm talking."
You froze, staring at him. You had never seen Kelly Severide look this fragile. Not when he was injured, not when his career was on the line.
"The boy at the warehouse," Kelly choked out, the words fighting their way past the lump in his throat, tasting like the ash heâd been choking on for days. "He... he looked like a kid I knew growing up. Same dark hair. Same sneakers. When the beams started cracking, Hadley yelled for me to get out, but I swore to God I could still hear him breathing under the drywall. I threw my back into a piece of timber, Y/N. I pulled until my shoulders felt like they were ripping out of the sockets, but it wouldn't move. And then... then the flashover happened. And he was gone."
Kelly took a sharp, gasping breath, his chest heaving as the confession tore out of him.
"I came home, and I looked at you, and all I could think was that the world is a disgusting, broken place that tears good things apart," he whispered, stepping closer, his boots squeaking against the hardwood of the entryway. "And I carry so much black smoke inside me, Y/N. I always have. I thought... I genuinely believed that if I let you touch it, if I let you carry it, it would burn you up. I thought if I stayed quiet, I was keeping you safe from me."
He reached into his pocket, his wet fingers trembling as he pulled out your small silver ring. He held it out between you like a lifeline.
"But I was wrong," he whispered, a sob finally breaking through his voice, his blue eyes entirely clear, entirely open, looking right into yours. "Walking into that loft and not seeing your boots by the door... seeing your empty coffee mug... it was worse than any fire I've ever been trapped in. The silence didn't protect you. It just locked you out in the cold. I was a coward."
You stood in the doorway, the breath completely knocked out of you. The wall you had spent five days building around your own heart crumbled to dust at the sound of his confession. You looked at the ring in his hand, then up at his wet, tear-stained face.
"Kelly..." your voice was a broken whisper.
"I'm sorry I couldn't let you in before," he said, stepping directly into your space, his hands finally rising to gently, tentatively cup your face. His palms were warm against your cheeks, despite the rain. "I'm sorry I made you feel like you weren't enough. You are everything. You're the only reason I want to come home at the end of a shift. Please. Don't give up on me yet. Iâll talk. Iâll scream, Iâll yell, Iâll tell you every horrible thing I see on the job, just... please don't leave me in that quiet."
You looked at him for one more agonizing second, seeing the absolute, unfiltered truth in his eyes. He wasn't hiding anymore. He had swallowed his pride, dragged himself through the dirt, and laid his soul completely bare on your doorstep.
With a soft, choked cry, you stepped forward, wrapping your arms tightly around his neck.
Kelly let out a ragged, broken gasp of pure relief, his arms instantly locking around your waist like iron bands. He pulled you flush against him, lifting you slightly off your feet, burying his wet face into the crook of your neck. He held you so tightly it hurt, his fingers digging into the fabric of your sweatshirt as if he were terrified you might dissolve into mist if he let go.
The rain kept pouring outside, a chaotic storm rattling the windows of the apartment building. But as you held him back, feeling the frantic, steady beat of his heart against your own, the suffocating silence of the last five days finally vanished, replaced by the quiet, healing sound of his breath against your skin.
"I'm here," you whispered into his damp hair, tightening your grip. "I'm right here, Kelly. I'm not giving up."
He didn't speakâhe didn't need to anymore. The firewall was gone, the smoke had cleared, and for the first time in a long time, Kelly Severide was finally home.
Warnings: Heavy emotional angst, canon-typical trauma (mention of a tragic fire/loss of a child), miscommunication, relationship strain, emotional exhaustion.
Description: You always knew that loving a firefighter meant accepting the smoke they brought home with them. But after a devastating call pulls Kelly back into his oldest, darkest habits, his silence becomes an impenetrable wall. Youâre left standing in the cold of your shared Chicago loft, realizing that you canât keep burning alive just to keep a ghost warm.
The rain hitting the massive, industrial glass windows of the loft didnât sound like rain tonight. It sounded like static. Like a low, buzzing white noise meant to fill up a space that used to be full of lifeâfull of music, loud laughter, the clinking of dinner plates, and the easy, comforting rumble of Kellyâs voice.
Now, the apartment just felt hollow. Too big, too dark, and freezing around the edges.
You sat at the kitchen island, your bare knees pulled up to your chest on the leather barstool. Your hands were clamped tightly around a ceramic mug of coffee that had gone completely cold hours ago, the dark surface reflecting the dim ambient light of the microwave clock. 2:14 AM
Three days. Thatâs exactly how long it had been since the alarm sounded at Firehouse 51, calling Squad 3 out to a massive commercial structure fire at a plastics warehouse on the South Side. You hadnât been at the firehouse when the call came in, but you had felt the tectonic shift the exact second Kelly walked back through the front door of the loft that next morning.
He hadnât looked at you. Not really. His eyes had passed right through you, glassy and completely unfocused. Heâd wordlessly stripped off his soot-stained uniform, thrown it into the washing machine with a heavy thud, and walked straight into the bathroom. He stood under a scalding shower for forty-five minutes, the steam rolling out from under the door smelling faintly of burning rubber and chemical ash, until his skin was rubbed raw.
He didn't say a word about what happened. He didn't have to.
Later that afternoon, your phone had buzzed on the kitchen counter. It was a text from Shay:
He lost a kid, Y/N. A ten-year-old boy who got trapped in the back office. Kelly went back into the crawlspace twice to get him, but the roof came down. Boden and Hadley literally had to drag him out by his turnout gear before the whole place flashed over. Heâs completely locked down at the firehouse, hiding in the bullpen, and he won't talk to me either. Just... be ready. He's in a really bad way.
So, you did what you always did. You gave him space. You didn't push him, you didn't corner him, and you didn't demand answers he wasn't ready to give. You knew the toll the job took on him. You knew that some days, the smoke settled deep into his bones and required a little time to clear out.
But "space" had quickly morphed into an absolute, suffocating void.
Over the last seventy-two hours, Kelly had started pulling double shifts back-to-back, practically living at 51. He picked up every extra hour he could find just to keep his hands busy, running himself into the dirt. And on the rare occasions he actually came back to the loft, he was a total ghost. He didn't touch the dinners you wrapped up and left in the fridge. He didn't climb into bed beside you. Instead, he spent the dead of night sitting on the very edge of the living room couch in pitch darkness, staring blankly at the brick wall, slowly nursing a single bottle of Miller Lite until the glass sweat through his grip and pooled on the floorboards.
He was doing what Kelly Severide always did when the world cracked open beneath his feet: he was shutting down. He was burying the grief and the guilt under a mountain of stubborn, defensive silence, genuinely convinced that if he kept the smoke locked up inside his own chest, it wouldn't choke anyone else.
But it was choking you. You were inhaling his secondhand silence, and it was killing you.
The sharp, heavy click of the loft's front lock turning cut through the steady drone of the rain, making you flinch slightly.
The heavy metal door swung open, and Kelly stepped into the entryway. He looked entirely worn downâhis shoulders slouched under the weight of his dark squad jacket, his hair damp from the Chicago downpour, and his jaw covered in a thick layer of dark stubble. His eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark, bruised shadows of exhaustion. The faint, unmistakable scent of soot, damp fabric, and stale beer clung to him like a second skin.
He didn't look toward the kitchen. He didn't acknowledge the light youâd left on for him. He just kicked off his muddy boots with a tired groan, let his keys drop onto the console table with a sharp clatter, and began to mindlessly walk past you toward the back hallway.
"Kelly."
Your voice was quiet, barely above a whisper, but in the dead, tense silence of the apartment, it sounded like a physical blow.
He stopped in his tracks, his back instantly stiffening beneath his jacket. For a long, painful moment, he stood perfectly still in the hallway, refusing to turn around and face you. "I told you not to wait up for me, Y/N," he muttered, his voice rough and incredibly dry. "Iâm exhausted."
"You're always exhausted," you said, your voice remarkably steady despite the tight, suffocating knot forming in your throat. You unfolded your legs and stood up from the barstool, the floorboards cold against your bare feet. "You've been exhausted for three days straight. You've been gone for three days, Kelly."
"I'm working," he mumbled, his tone flat, entirely devoid of the warmth and affection that usually made your heart skip a beat. He still wouldn't look at you. "Weâre short-staffed on Squad right now. Iâm just doing my job."
"Don't do that. Please, don't hide behind the badge with me," you whispered, taking a slow step toward him. Your legs felt incredibly heavy, like lead dragging across the floor. "I know what happened at the warehouse, Kelly. Shay texted me. I know about the boy."
That finally made him turn.
His jaw clenched so hard a muscle leaped in his cheek. His icy blue eyes, usually so expressive and full of life, were entirely guarded behind a wall of pure frost. "Shay needs to mind her own damn business," he snapped, a sudden flash of heat breaking through his cold exterior. "I'm fine."
"You're not fine!" The sudden volume in your voice surprised even you, the words echoing sharply off the high, exposed brick walls of the loft. You took another step forward, your hands trembling so violently you had to ball them into fists. "You haven't looked at me since Tuesday. You haven't spoken a full sentence to me. You come home at two in the morning, you drink in the dark, and you treat me like Iâm a stranger renting a room in your space. I am your partner, Kelly. I love you. I am supposed to carry this weight with you, not watch you drown in it."
"I don't need you to carry anything for me!" he shouted back, his voice finally breaking out of the flat monotone. It flared with a raw, ugly, defensive anger that cut right through you. "You think you want to hear about it? You think you want to know what it looks like when a roof collapses on aâ"
He cut himself off mid-sentence, his chest heaving as he closed his eyes tightly, taking a sharp, ragged breath that sounded like it tore his lungs. The mental image was clearly torturing him, but instead of letting you in, he slammed the iron gates shut. When he opened his eyes again, the emotional wall was right back up, thicker than before.
"Just drop it, Y/N. Seriously. I don't want to talk about it. Not tonight." He turned on his heel to walk away again, completely dismissing you.
"If you walk away from me right now, Kelly, I won't be here when you turn back around."
The threat hung in the damp air, thick, heavy, and terrifyingly real.
Kelly stopped dead in his tracks. Slowly, deliberately, he turned his body back around to face you. His eyes scanned your face, searching your expression, trying to see if you were just bluffing out of anger, trying to see if you were just trying to scare him into talking.
But as his gaze traveled past you, he finally noticed it.
Sitting right by the front door, propped neatly against the console table, was your dark canvas duffel bag. It was packed full.
His expression didn't shatter. It didn't soften into regret. Instead, it hardened into something entirely unreadable and terrifyingly cold. The sight of your packed bag didn't make him rush forward to hold you; it made him retreat even deeper into the dark trenches of his own mind. The toxic, deeply ingrained narrative heâd carried his entire lifeâthe cruel voice that constantly whispered he was cursed, that everyone he ever loved either died like Shay's darkest fears or walked away like his fatherâtook total control of him.
Fine, his bitter silence seemed to say. Leave. Everyone else does anyway.
"Is that what this is?" Kelly asked, his voice dropping to a dangerously quiet, venomous whisper that made your stomach drop. "An ultimatum? I have a bad week, I handle a horrific call the only way I know how to handle it, and you pack a bag and threaten to walk out?"
"A bad week?" A bitter, entirely heartbroken laugh escaped your lips, a heavy tear finally spilling over your lashes and burning a path down your cheek. "Kelly, I would have followed you anywhere. I have followed you anywhere. I stayed through the injuries. I stayed when you went completely off the grid after Benny. I stayed through the night terrors, and the drinking, and the reckless, dangerous stunts you pull on the job because you don't care if you live or die. I have burned myself alive for months trying to keep you warm, thinking that if I just loved you hard enough, you'd finally realize you don't have to bleed in secret."
You took a ragged, trembling breath, stepping directly into his personal space, desperately searching his eyes for a single crack, a single tear, a single sign that he was still in there.
"But I can't follow you into a void anymore," you whispered, your voice completely cracking under the weight of your grief. "I can't keep fighting for someone who won't even say a single word to keep me. Look at me, Kelly. Please. Just say something. Tell me you want me here. Tell me youâre still in there. Give me anything to hold onto. Just say something."
You waited.
The silence stretched between you like an ocean, suffocating the entire room. One second. Five seconds. Ten seconds.
Kelly stood there like a statue carved of stone. His fists were clenched so tightly at his sides that his knuckles were stark white. His chest rose and fell in heavy, silent heaves. He looked at you, and for a terrifying fraction of a second, you saw itâthe agonizing, desperate flash of pure panic in his eyes. He wanted to reach out. He wanted to slam his hands onto your waist, pull you violently into his chest, and bury his face in the crook of your neck until the smell of the smoke finally cleared from his mind.
But his immense pride, twisted together with the crushing weight of his trauma, held him entirely paralyzed. If she stays, Iâll just break her pieces, his mind whispered in the dark. Let her go. She's safer away from you.
He didn't move. He didn't speak. He just tightened his jaw, hid his eyes, and looked down at the wooden floorboards between you.
The very last string holding you together snapped. The hope youâd been desperately clinging to for three days evaporated into the cold air of the loft.
"I'm sorry," you whispered, the words tearing at the raw skin of your throat, tasting like salt and absolute regret. "I'm so sorry that I couldn't get to you, Kelly."
You walked right past him. He didn't try to stop you. His arm didn't reach out to catch your shoulder. He didn't even lift his head.
You picked up your duffel bag from the floor, your fingers completely numb against the heavy canvas strap. You reached for the brass doorknob, turning it, and stepped out onto the cold concrete hallway of the apartment building. The air out here was freezing, mimicking the chill that had settled deep into your bones.
You turned back one last time, hoping against hope. But Kelly hadn't moved an inch. He was still standing perfectly still in the middle of the kitchen, staring blankly at the empty space where you had just been standing. In the vastness of the loft, he looked incredibly, heartbreakingly small.
"Goodbye, Kelly," you murmured.
You pulled the heavy door shut. The metallic, definitive click of the lock echoed down the empty hallway, sounding like the final, tragic note of a song. And as you walked toward the elevator, the heavy quiet of the building enveloped you, and you finally let the tears fall unrestricted into the dark.

Masterlist / One Chicago Masterlist
The annual police gala. Something everyone dreaded but was very much needed in order to fund your workplace. The whole night consisted of sucking up to rich people while trying not to lose your cool. The only good thing about it was the food and open bar, they would go all out to try and keep you guys happy.
You attended this gala more times then you would have liked to. You were always your dad's date, being pictured as this family man always did the trick; you never minded as you'd always get something in return. Whether that be a new toy or cash. Now for the past couple of years you were here as a member of the department, member of your father's task force.
To help you endure the long hours of being fake you brought Chicago's favorite fireman, Kelly Severide. It actually wasn't your idea, but his. After attending the fireman gala he offered to come support you knowing how boring it could get. You were grateful he was willing to spend his night off with you. He didn't care as long as he was with you and as long as he can rip the dress right off of you when the both of you got home.
"Very bold there with the red." Hailey said as you, Kelly, and your dad started to walk to where the team was waiting.
"I look hot, I shouldn't get any complaints from the highers ups." You smiled, your matching red lips curving up into a smirk. The rest of the team along with Kelly laughed at your comment, Kelly squeezing your hips telling you he 100% agreed.
"You look beautiful darling." Your dad said as he was the only one who didn't laugh at your comment. He will always see you as the little girl who would wear these pink poofy dresses to the gala.
"Thanks dad."Â
"So did anyone find our table?" You asked earning headshakes from everyone.
"Well, let's go and find it to start this wonderful night we're going to have." You sarcastically said as you pulled Kelly with you inside the ballroom leaving your laughing co-workers behind.
The night went on like normal, kissing ass while being bored on the inside. You were used to it by now, but still dread it. Kelly was the best arm candy you could have brought. Along with being the perfect gentleman, he was your selling point, like how you were your dads. Apparently, people loved first-responder couples. Kelly found it amusing and kept in mind to use the tactics you used for his firefighter gala.
After dinner, it was party time for the department. Most sponsors and donors left after dinner, so this was everyone's chance to lay back while dancing their little hearts away. You and the team took advantage of this as they hired a legit DJ. By this point with the amount of alcohol in their systems, they let loose being themselves contrast to the professionals a few hours ago. You wouldn't believe these were the same people.
After what seemed like the 20th song, Kelly decided to go to the bathroom while you and your teammates decided to joining your dad at the bar to hopefully sober yourself up with some water or soda. While everyone was laughing you noticed Kelly was taking longer the usual, looking in the direction of the bathrooms you saw him walking in your direction seeming pissed off, something definitely happened.
"What's wrong baby?" You asked leaning more into him so only he could hear you.
"Nothing, just some tipsy guys." He said with a smile not wanting the mood to be brought down.
You decided to let it go for now. He really didn't want to ruin the mood so you weren't going to by asking him. After passing him your soda you feel back into conversation with the rest of the team along. Laughs and jokes were mainly shared, none of you were in the right mind to tell a story. In the middle of one of Adam's jokes you felt Kelly tense. When you looked up to him following his gaze to two men in uniforms, who looked to be patrol officers at most. You didn't understand the tension until they decided to walk by you.
"Miss spoiled brat." One of them spat out looking at you before trying to walk away but Kelly's voice stopped them in their tracks.
"Didn't I tell you to keep her name out of your mouth," Kelly called out making the whole team quiet, thankfully the music was loud enough to not draw any other eyes.
"Does baby voight need her fireman boyfriend to help her like how you needed him to help you clim the ranks, the last name wasn't enough." An officer name with he last name Jones said making everyone's eyes pop out of their socket. These insults were nothing new, you didn't mind them but no one had the balls to say that in front of your dad.
"Want to repeat that officer?" You heard your dad saying stepping out into their view, their smirk dropping in a second while they turned pale. So they didn't have the balls to say it in front of him, they just didn't know he was there.
"You know what, it's so funny that people think I give two shits about what they think of me. So what if my last name and the person I'm fucking got me in my position. It's not bothering me, it's not bothering my coworkers, sure as hell ain't bothering the higher-ups. So the last person it should be bothering is you. You can keep sitting there complaining about where I'm at instead of working to get to my position. I'm here living my best carefree life proudly wearing the Voight name, soon adding the Severide name. Now gentlemen please enjoy the rest of your night and don't talk to me again unless it's for a job." You smiled at them watching them grow uncomfortable as they rushing away.
"Holy shit that was awesome." You heard Kim saying making you smirk.
"Did you see their faces once they saw Voight." Jay started dying laughing along with the rest of the team, you joining in.
"Severide and Voight were about to kill them in a second I swear." Kevin added.
"Now that's my girl." You heard your dad say pulling you into his side kissing your forehead.
"That has to be the hottest thing I've ever seen you do." You heard Kelly mumble into your ear making you smirk.
"You sure about that, cowboy?" You teased making him growl.
"One of the hottest things." He corrected making you let out a little giggle.
SUMMARY: There's a photographer in the firehouse. Kelly catches him where he shouldn't be.
WARNINGS: mentions of vomit (reader gets thrown up on), mentions of photographer taking photos of naked reader (doesn't happen though)

"It's a good thing I have a strong stomach," you grumbled bitterly, halfway out of your seat before Brett had even stopped the ambulance. "But if I don't shower soon, I'm going to start itching."
Brett laughed and killed the engine. "Yeah, it's gonna smell in here for a while."
"Ha."
You walked around the side of the ambulance and saw Kelly sitting with Matt and the photographer that was spending a day in-house to observe and capture authentic firehouse moments. Ever since he'd shown up that morning, he'd been following you and Brett around, the click of his camera providing the backdrop of your workday. It was getting on your nerves, so the callouts were welcome respite from it. Until this one.
When Kelly saw you, he grinned, cigar hanging loosely from his fingers. "What the hell happened to you?"
"I do not want to talk about it," you said, holding your hands up in surrender.
The front of your coat was covered in vomit, an unfortunate consequence of the call you'd just returned from. The smell was lingering in your nostrils and you just wanted to shower and wash away the memory.
"I'm going to shower," you said. "Then maybe I'll be in the mood to talk."
Kelly huffed a laugh. "Good idea. I can smell you from here."
Rolling your eyes, you moved closer to Kelly and watched him grimace as you did. "You're telling me you don't want some of this?"
Kelly raised his foot, intercepting your approach. "You know I do, but not until you shower."
"Get outta here," Matt said, chuckling. "You're interrupting my peace and fresh air."
"Alright, alright," you said. "If you don't see me for a while, assume I'm trying to scrub off a layer of skin in the shower."
You blew Kelly a kiss and headed inside to the showers. Cruz tried to stop you and ask what had happened, but one glare had him raising his hands and sending you on your way. Everybody knew better than to try and talk to you when that look crossed your face. The last time someone did, well... Herrmann had never been the same.
Back outside, Brett leaned against the wall and said, "We had a guy face down on Racine. Rolled him over and... bleugh, all over her. 50/50 chance it could've been me, but I am glad it wasn't."
"I can't imagine she feels the same," Kelly said. Matt grinned.
"No, I doubt it," Brett replied.
"Hey, uh, I'm gonna go and get some coffee," Nate, the photographer, said. "You guys want anything?"
A chorus of 'no's were returned to him and he disappeared into the house after snapping a couple of photos of Brett. Glancing down at his cigar, Kelly kicked his feet down from where they'd been resting on a stool and stood up.
"I'll be back in a minute," he said. "Nobody touch my cigar."
Matt raised his eyebrows. "No worries."
Kelly looked at Brett, who shook her head. "I'm not touching it."
Heading inside, Kelly made his way to the bathrooms, intending on maybe gatecrashing your shower once you'd gotten rid of the initial smell of vomit. He wandered past the toilet stalls, taking off his jacket as he went, before he spotted someone else moving around in the showers. Furrowing his eyebrows, Kelly quickened his pace and rounded the corner only to be met with the sight of Nate holding his camera up as though waiting to take photos of you. In the shower.
"Hey!"
If there was one person on this Earth that Kelly Severide would do anything for, it was you. There was hardly a line he wouldn't cross if it meant keeping you safe, and seeing a man waiting to take photos of you at your most vulnerable sent white-hot rage coursing through him.
His hands shoved Nate towards the opposite wall, where he grasped the man by the jacket and pinned him. "What the hell are you doing?"
"What the hell is wrong with you, man?" Nate yelled. "Get off me!"
"What's going on?"
Your head was peering out of the shower cubicle, dripping water onto the floor. Kelly looked over at you and said, "I just caught him trying to take pictures of you."
You were out of the shower now, wrapping a towel around your body. "In- In the shower?"
"Yeah," Kelly snapped, dragging Nate from the wall and shoving him. "Get your camera and get the hell out of this firehouse."
"Hey, man, you got the wrong-"
"No, I don't think I did," Kelly snapped, taking a step to position himself between you and Nate. "Get the hell out. I won't ask again."
Nate looked once at you, still dripping water onto the floor at your feet, towel wrapped securely around your body, and then at Kelly, whose fists were clenched at his sides like he was holding himself back from throwing a punch.
By the time he was gone, you felt some of the shock subside. Kelly turned to you and his name spilled from your lips in a whisper. "Kel?"
He raised a hand to you, his jaw clenched, before he stormed from the bathroom.
You let him go, hurrying to dress yourself again. Rushing and getting stuck in your t-shirt because you weren't completely dry, you ran from the bathroom and almost collided with Kelly on your way out of the door. A shriek of surprise left you as he clapped his hands on your shoulders to steady you, a laugh leaving his lips at the expression on your face.
"You okay?"
"You scared me!" you said, holding a hand to your chest. "Jesus, I was scared you'd start a fight."
"I was close," Kelly said. "I would've taken that guy's head off."
"While I appreciate you being so willing to defend my honour, it's okay-"
"It's not okay," Kelly said, his grip tightening on your shoulders. "He shouldn't have even come close to you in there."
"But he didn't-"
"Stop trying to justify this," Kelly said. "I already told Boden. He wants to see us in his office."
You sighed. "Kelly-"
"I know, I know, you're gonna tell me not to make a big deal about it," Kelly said. "Unlucky for you, I'm making a big deal out of this."
You grimaced. "Fine."
"Are you okay, though?" he asked.
"Yeah," you said softly. "I'm fine. Thanks for... you know, being there."
"Yeah, that jackass ruined my chance of getting you alone in the showers," Kelly said, shaking his head.
Grinning up at him, you pressed a gentle kiss to his lips and whispered, "When we get home, I'll show you just how grateful I am for you playing the hero."
Kelly's hands rested on your hips and pulled you closer. "Sounds good to me," he murmured, kissing you again. "C'mon, let's go find Boden."
You sighed. "Yeah, okay."
Getting through the rest of the shift would be the longest hours of your life.

âGuys suck.â You complained, taking another big swig of your drink.
âI donât think itâs fair to lump us all in the same category as that jackass.â Your best friend, Jay reasoned. He was probably right to be fair. It was just that every guy you had been with in the past year had been the biggest douchebag. It was honestly starting to become impressive how quickly you could pick out a jerk. So, after finding out that once again you had been cheated on you went to Jay, and were led to Mollyâs. All you knew was that you had every intention of getting hammered by the time last call came around.
The important thing to note here is that you totally and absolutely did not have a crush on Jay Halstead. His blue eyes did not make you weak in the knees. His smile did not make your mouth feel immediately dry, and his broad shoulders, hard chest, and bulging biceps did not at all make you want to feel him up right then and there. Nope. Not at all. You were definitely not in love with your best friend.
What you didnât know coming in was that Hermann decided tonight would be karaoke night. Normally you would sink back in your chair and enjoy all the drunk idiots up on stage, but tonight you were the inverse.
âJay! Letâs do a duet!â You exclaimed flipping through the song choices.
âHey, Iâm pretty sure I Will Always Love You is in there somewhere.â Adam implied taking a drink as Jay kicked him under the table and threw him a glare. Lucky for him you were already too far gone to even notice.
âYeah. Thatâs not gonna happen.â Jay answered.
âBut Jayyyyy.â You whined.
âIâm not nearly drunk enough for that.â He chuckled.
âThen drink up!â You exclaimed tilting his drink up further whenever he went to take a drink until it was all gone. âIn the meantime, I know what Iâm going to sing!â You exclaimed taking the book back up to the front and telling Otis.
âWhatâd you decide?â Antonio asked whenever you sat
back down.
âWell Iâm not going to tell you.â You rolled your eyes dramatically making him laugh.
âYou look like you all could use some shots!â Adam exclaimed passing them out. You looked at him wearily as he sat one down in front of you. âItâll be fine, just do it.â He shrugged ignoring the fact that you puked almost every time you took a shot. You contemplated it for a second before sighing and picking it up causing Adam to smile big as you all clinked the little glasses. It took all but 5 seconds for you to get that familiar feeling.
âAndddd the streak continues.â You informed getting
up to walk to the bathroom. After getting rid of the contents of the shot and probably some of the other drinks you had that night you stood in front of the mirror fixing your makeup. You hadnât thought you were in there that long until Jay came knocking at the door.
â[Y/N]?â He asked through the door, wobble from his drunkenness clear, as he came walking in hand over his eyes making you giggle.
âNobody else is in here.â You assured him.
âYou good?â He asked finally opening his eyes and walking towards you.
âMhm.â You confirmed turning the water off that was flowing over your soap covered hands, reaching for a towel.
âDonât you know better than to take shots?â Jay crossed his arms against his chest distracting you for a second as you took notice of the veins popping out of forearms. â[Y/N]?â Jay caught your attention and when your eyes returned to his a small smirk played on his lips. âLooking at something?â He asked cockiness clear in his voice. You bit your lip looking him up and down knowing you were already caught and too drunk to care or feel embarrassed.
âI guess thatâs one way to put it.â You smiled, taking a step towards him hands moving up to grip his biceps. His arms fell from his chest, hands moving to grip your hips. You were close enough to smell his cologne very clearly, along with a small hint of beer.
âMan I could stand to do something stupid tonight.â Jay admitted voice hoarse.
âIâm stupid...do me.â You challenged looking up at him. His eyes a darker blue than what you were ever used to seeing. Jay seemed to be going through a series of questions in his own head before a look of defeat appeared. He moved one hand up to your jaw gripping it roughly before pulling your lips to meet his. A surge of electricity poured throughout your body at the feeling of his lips on yours. Just as you began to relax into him moving to deepen the kiss you heard the door open. Jumping back you turned to see Sylvie in the doorway eyes wide.
âUh...sorry..â She mumbled clearing her throat.
âNo! Youâre good. My song should be coming up soon anyway!â You stumbled over your words quickly moving to get out of the bathroom Jay on your heels. You both made it back to your table avoiding eye contact the entire time. Until Otis announced your song. Unfortunately for you, you were feeling much more sober than before and hesitated at your seat.
â[Y/L/N], come on youâre up.â Kevin insisted basically picking you up and dragging you towards the stage. Refusing to let you back out of this rare opportunity they would probably never see again. You took his beer from his hand downing the rest of it and stepping up on stage. You were immediately regretting your song choice, not feeling as confident as you were an hour ago. As the song began to play your let your logic fly out the window. It was already too late so you were ready to own it.
âHey, over there please forgive me if Iâm coming on too strong.â You began shaking the nerves out as best as you could. During the first verse most of your friends stood shell-shocked. Knowing this was totally out of your comfort zone, but as the chorus came around they were screaming and cheering for you. Jay on the other hand sat wide eyed.
âPop it like a hood and show me how you work it out.â You sang coming off the stage and directly singing to Jay who was basically frozen in his chair.
âSo, if I said I want your body now would you hold it against me?â You finished not leaving Jayâs eyes. Whenever you came back down to your table you were met with a ton of questions.
âWhat the hell [Y/L/N], how long you been holding out on us?â Kevin asked.
âSeriously, remind us to thank Tanner for cheating on you.â Adam added immediately regretting his choice of words as Kim smacked him. âAfter beating his ass of course.â He corrected making you shake your head laughing. Jay sat in silence not making a sound. What you didnât know was that in this moment he was now grappling with the realization that he was actually and truly in love with his best friend. You stayed for another half hour before announcing that you were leaving. Saying goodbye to everyone before walking out into the cold, shivering at the air hitting you. You felt something hit your shoulders and turned to see Jay putting his coat over you.
âThank you.â You mumbled smiling a little.
âSo..that was something.â He laughed a little.
âWhat? The song or the kiss?â You asked figuring that being shy would not help the situation. Plus it was already a little late for that.
âBoth I guess.â He blushed looking down.
âNow that Iâm sobering up I admit that might not have been the best approach.â You bit your lip nervously.
âI mean I didnât see anything wrong with it.â Jay grinned.
âSays the person that hasnât said a word in the last hour.â You said.
âIâm sorry it was kinda a lot to take it.â He replied laughing. You nodded your head agreeing and apologizing. âLook..itâs getting cold out. How about we go back to my place and talk about this? I know for me this isnât some one night drunken thing that just came out of the blue.â He admitted. You thought for a second before agreeing.
âI would like that.â You replied. He smiled adjusting his jacket on your shoulders and taking your hand in his heading off towards his apartment. Lucky for you he did hold it against you that night.
