Stalker
Description: Y/n has a stalker and no one knows until it might be too late.
Jay and Y/n are in an established relationship but it's secret.
It started one night, when she was out for a walk after a long day at work. The intelligence team had just wrapped up a particularly hard case and she needed to clear her mind.
She got this feeling.
The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, her stomach felt queasy.
She could hear footsteps behind her.
But when she looked back, no one was there, just an empty sidewalk illuminated by street lamps.
She walked slower this time, trying to listen.
She heard it again, turned around, nothing.
Maybe work was finally getting to her.
That continued for a good week, whenever she was out on a walk or just simply running errands--anything but working-- she heard the footsteps, got that feeling.
But no one was ever there.
She switched up her routines after that.
--
A month later, she was over at Jay's apartment and she could have sworn she saw someone outside watching her.
"What are you looking at?" Jay asked as he came up behind her, noticing her staring outside of the window for longer than normal.
Y/n didn't answer, she could feel her heart in her throat as she looked at the dark figure staring up at her.
"Y/n" Jay said her name, pulling her out of her thoughts, making her jump.
"Woah, hey, what's going on?" the concern was thick in his voice as she faced him, turning from the window.
"Nothing- I just thought..." She trailed off, glancing at the window to see an empty street "Nevermind, sorry, did you pick a movie?" She asked sweetly, wrapping her arms around his neck.
Jay smiled as he wrapped his arms around her torso, pulling her closer.
"Well, I was thinking action, cheesy comedy, or a horror that will have you hiding in my side. You pick" Jay jokes, placing a kiss on her forehead.
"hmmm" she hummed, nestling her head into his chest "Action--i'll be cuddled up to you no matter what, detective"
The man on the street was long forgotten thanks to Jay.
--
Another month went by, she still had that eerie feeling but it slowly went away as Jay and her spent more time at each other's apartments.
They usually left work , went home to one of their places and went to work the next day from there, repeating that process.
The rest of the team didn't suspect a thing, they kept things strictly professional at work. It was easier for now.
Easier than explaining the situation to Voight. The paperwork that would inevitably follow.
It was Wednesday morning, the team had picked up a homicide case and they were busy at the district looking at Pod footage, checking with CI's, etc.
Haley was returning from talking to a CI, she was making her way from her car to the basement door that led to intelligence when she spotted a man leaving something on Y/n's car.
Her eyebrows furrowed as she approached the blonde haired man.
"Hey, can I help you with something?" she asks, confused at to why this guy she had never seen before was in the police lot, messing with her friend's car.
The blonde man turned as he finished placing what looked to be an envelope under the windshield wiper.
"Hi, sorry I was just leaving a note from my girlfriend" the blonde man explained and friendly smile on his face.
"Oh, you're Y/n's boyfriend? I'm Haley, i've heard a lot about you" The detective suspected nothing.
Y/n had spoken about her mystery boyfriend to Haley and Kim whenever they got together but never told them his name.
"Yes, I've heard about you--Yeah, we had a fight this morning, just wanted to make up for it. I have to head to work, it was nice meeting you" The mystery man left calmly.
He wasn't jumpy, he wasn't nervous.
Haley called a 'nice to meet you!" after him which he waved back before disappearing around the corner.
Haley shrugged, making her way inside and upstairs to the bullpen.
She spotted Y/n sat at her desk across from Kim's, squinting at her computer, a grin forming on the blonde detective's face.
"Y/n, your boyfriend's really nice!" Haley said casually as she took a seat at her desk.
Jay and Y/n's heads shot up from their work, looking at Haley.
Jay did his best to act normal.
Y/n cleared her throat. "What do you mean?" She asked, confused.
"I met him in the parking lot, he left a note on your car" Haley continued.
The color drained from Y/n's face as she swallowed the lump in her throat.
The rest of the team let out 'ooo's at the news.
Jay's face was unreadable. His jaw clenched.
And before she could ask more questions, Voight stepped out of his office.
"Halstead, Upton. Give forensics a little push on the DNA, we need that back ASAP" The older man said in a gruff voice.
Jay and Haley stood from their desks and made their way to the stairs, Jay didn't even glance in Y/n's direction.
They had been dating officially for six months, had she been cheating on him?
Maybe she was talking to another guy?
The thoughts swirled around Jay's head and it made him increasingly upset.
Y/n felt the pit in her stomach grow and without a second thought, rushed to the parking lot in the back to see the note.
When she reached her car, there was no one around except a few police officers, the white envelope stuck out from under the windshield wipers.
Her hands shook as she retrieved it.
Reluctantly, she opened it, pulling out a folded piece of lined paper.
'My love,
I can't wait for us to be together, for no one to be in the way. No one to judge us. Getting to know you the past few months, watching you, has been exhilarating. We will be together soon.
xoxo'
This had to be a joke.
Her mind was slowly shutting down as she read it over and over again.
Making her way back upstairs, she felt her entire body shake as she sat at her desk.
Adam, Kevin and Kim gave each other worried looks when they saw her.
This time they noticed her pale face.
"Y/n? You okay?" Kevin asked, leaning forward on his desk,
Y/n didn't answer, staring at the folded up paper in her hand.
"Y/n" Kim called to her friend.
Y/n's eyes shot up, finding her three friends staring at her.
"Yeah, Yeah I'm okay"
--
The day went by in a blur, the team was busy for the rest of the day, hindering any chance Y/n had to talk to Jay.
When they were all gathering their things, Y/n emerged from the locker room to find only Haley and Kevin in the bullpen.
"Did Jay leave?" She asked simply, glancing at her boyfriend's desk.
"Yeah, few minutes ago" Haley answered simply before bidding the other two detectives goodnight.
Y/n followed suit a second after, telling Kevin to have a goodnight as she rushed to her car.
She was already hit the call button under Jay's name before she even made it to her car.
Straight to voicemail.
He must be pissed.
He had no idea she had a stalker, she never told him. She never told anyone.
She would sound crazy and if she told them now, they would think she's stupid for not saying something sooner.
She tried Jay's number again as she reached her apartment building placing her car in park.
Voicemail again.
She waited for the beep.
"Jay, please call me. It's not what you think...Someone's been stalking me...that's who left the note. Please just call me" she pleaded into the receiver before ending the call.
It was still a little light outside, that made her feel a little better as she got out of her car, gathering her things before heading inside.
When she made it to her floor, she tried Jay's number again.
Voicemail.
She was planning to hang up, to not leave another. But her brain didn't process the beep because she was too busy staring at her door halfway open.
Y/n dropped the phone, it hit the floor with a thud as she took her gun out of the holster.
"Chicago police, who's in here" she called as she entered the apartment.
As she cleared it like she would any other house, her hands shaking, she found nothing.
When she headed back for the front door to shut it she felt a sharp pain in the back of her head and then it all went black.
Her body dropped to the floor with a thud.
--
Jay stared at the phone, frowning at the notifications.
3 missed calls from Y/n.
2 voicemails.
He sighed as he sat on the couch in his apartment, pressing play on the first voicemail.
Y/n's voice was shaky, she sounded scared as she spoke. His heart clenched.
And then his mind heard that sentence that made his blood run cold.
"....Someone's been stalking me...that's who left the note...."
He was already on his feet as the next voicemail began to play, he heard a thud, like the phone fell.
Then Y/n announced her office.
Then he heard shuffling and another thud.
His mind was swirling with worst case scenarios as he grabbed his keys, running out of the apartment--not even locking the door.
His heart was racing as he pressed call under her name.
The phone rang and rang. No answer.
He called three more times as he started his truck and took off, throwing his lights and sirens on.
"Dammit!" He exclaimed as he sped down the street.
He dialed 911.
He could have been overreacting but something felt off.
"911, what is your emergency" the dispatcher answered.
"This is Detective Jay Halstead, badge number 51163, I need backup at 2678 Martin Street."
That was all he got out before ending the call.
His phone rang as he pulled up to the apartment building, he prayed it was Y/n telling him she was okay.
But it wasn't.
He pressed the answer button, holding the phone up to his ear as he threw the truck in park, jumping out as soon as he could.
"Jay, I heard the call over the radio--what's up? You got a case?" Voight asked on the other end.
"It's Y/n, sarge. I think she's in trouble, I just got to her apartment building" the blue eyed detective explained as he ran inside the building, making his way up the stairs in record timing.
"I'm on my way, I'll loop the team in" Voight said before ending the call.
Jay's heart was beating out of his chest as he made his way through the hallway.
It felt like his vision narrowed and his lungs were being squeezed.
She's okay
She's okay
She's okay
He repeated it over and over and over in his head, because she had to be.
Y/n had to be okay.
When he reached the apartment the front door was cracked and he could hear scuffling--and then glass breaking.
He didn't hesitate anymore.
Entering the apartment, he found a man about his height with blonde hair pinning Y/n to the ground.
She was doing her best to claw and fight at him but it was no use.
And then Jay spotted it.
The sharp, silver piece against her throat.
"Drop the knife" Jay's voice was low, lower than Y/n had ever heard it.
But God was she happy to hear it.
The stalker glanced at Jay, the knife pressing into her skin at the movement.
"You called him? You wanted him over me?!" He screamed in her face.
Jay saw the blood drip down the side of her neck, the tears fall from her eyes.
"Just let her go, we can all walk out of here" Jay tried to reason with the man.
And then the knife was brought up into the air.
Jay didn't think twice, pulling the trigger and sending a bullet through the man's arm.
He got knocked down, falling to the side, just in time for Voight to storm in.
And Voight wasted no time, lugging the guy up and putting handcuffs on him--ignoring his cries of pain.
Jay was by Y/n's side in seconds, pulling her into his arms as he crouched beside her.
Her body shook as she clutched onto to the material of his shirt as she tried to breathe. The tears were steady now.
"I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry, baby" Jay whispered into her hair, fully aware of their boss and team being in the apartment by now but he couldn't care less.
There's no words spoken, just comfort. Everything would be okay now. She could breathe without looking over her shoulder.
--
"I'm sorry" Haley says quietly as she sits at the back of the ambulance next to Y/n.
Y/n frowns, looking at her friend "Why? You have nothing to be sorry for" she says in a confused tone.
Haley sighs, looking down at her hands "I should have stopped when I saw him at your car, asked more questions, something"
"Haley, stop, you couldn't have known" Y/n tells her seriously, reaching up to itch where the bandage is taped to her neck.
They're silent for a moment.
Y/n glances up to where Jay is speaking with Voight and the deputy chief about the shooting.
"So.....you and Jay huh?" Haley says with a smirk on her face now "How long?" she asks curiously.
"Six months" Y/n said, a grin on her face this time.
"And we call ourselves detectives" Haley says with a laugh.
Y/n laughs along with her.
Jay and Voight approach them, having wrapped up with the deputy chief.
"Ready?"
Y/n nodded, stepping closer until she could fully lean into Jay's body.
Jay chuckled, wrapping his arms around her.
Voight sighed, shaking his head "We'll talk about this tomorrow...I'm glad you're okay, kid." the small smile on his face didn't go unnoticed.
"Thanks Hank" Y/n said softly, smiling at her boss before he began to make his way back to his car.
Haley was next, giving the two a smile as she stood with her hands in her pockets "I'll see you guys tomorrow, get some sleep" she directed the last part to Y/n, patting her shoulder.
Jay looked down at the girl in his arms.
His girl.
Everyone knew and there was nothing stopping them now.
"That went well" Y/n said, surprise in her tone.
Jay chuckled, a grin spreading on his face "I think Voight was going to give me the 'if you hurt her I'll kill you talk'"
Y/n laughs, burying her face in his chest before mumbling "Maybe he will tomorrow"
"God I hope not"

What should I write next?
Jay is a dick angsty
Y/n has a stalker
Enemies 2
Pairings: Eventual Jay x Reader
Warnings: someone gets shot, mentions of blood, Charlie Reid (literally cannot stand him)
"Effective immediately, this Intelligence unit is shut down. All of you will get reassigned by the end of the week, please leave any work related files or information at your desks"
The team was quickly escorted from the intelligence bullpen after Reid's announcement.
And Reid did his best to talk to Y/n but she avoided him like the plague, leaving as quick as possible.
She was sat in her car outside of her apartment building, operating on autopilot.
A text came through her phone. A text from her uncle, the third one since he just upended the entire units lives two hours ago.
9:50am
Call me.
10:20am
Honey, please. I'm sorry I didn't give you a heads up, I couldn't.
10:50am
You can go back to Crime Investigations of course, don't worry about work. Come over for dinner tonight so we can talk.
Her blood was boiling.
Does he think that's what she's worried about? her job?
Okay, great, but what about Haley? Kim? Adam? Kevin? Voight?....Even Jay?
The intelligence unit was one of the best units in the Chicago Police Department, what reason could he have for shutting it down.
And then a thought popped into her mind, all other thoughts leaving it.
Jay.
He probably heard by now from the others, what if he thinks she had something to do with it.
Frantically, she goes to Jay's contact, clicking call.
It rings twice before she gets the voicemail.
"He did not just bitch button me" She says in disbelief.
She tries again, this time he only lets it ring once before declining.
"Fuck" Y/n mumbles, starting the car and put the suv in drive.
She hated Jay. But she was not going to let him think she had anything to do with this.
Her mind was racing at this point because she could not wrap her head around her uncle shutting the unit down.
Her uncle Charlie. There was a time he was the sweetest man in the whole world, he would do anything to help others. To do what was right.
He didn't have to raise her, he could have let her go into the foster care system.
But he didn't, a single 26 year old taking on a toddler. He was like a whole new person now.
And the intelligence team was suffering for it.
When she finally reached the familiar apartment building she wasted no time making her way inside and running up the stairs.
And when she finally reached his door, the bundle of nerves in her stomach increased.
Hesitantly she knocked on the door, suddenly the thought of him being mad at her scared her. And that scared her.
When he opens the door, Jay is definitely angry.
They only stare at each other for a minute. Realistically, she doesn't have to explain herself. She could go on letting him and the rest of the unit think whatever they want.
And did Jay really care? Would he really care if she talked to him or not? Probably not.
"Want to come in?" Jay asks simply, there's a sharpness to his tone.
Y/n nods, Jay stepping to the side to let her in.
"So, it's just some big coincidence, three weeks after you start working in intelligence that your uncle/adoptive dad shuts our unit down?" Jay is angry to say the least. Clearly there's a theory that she's involved.
Which honestly, she would probably jump to the same conclusion if the roles were reversed.
Wait-
"How do you know that? That he's my adoptive dad, you looked into me? You don't trust me?" Y/n felt hurt. yes, she was not the nicest to him, God she knew that.
But she would never go against good police or good people. She was not the sneaky type.
"Yeah, I did, because it was just too coincidental. Then I found that out and it clicked, so tell me, how long did you know about his plan to take us down?" Jay questions, his arms crossed over his chest.
Her eyes are wide with disbelief and she fights the tears that are gathering in them.
She had never been insulted like this.
"I didn't know, I had no idea"
Jay scoffs, shaking his head
"Jay, please you have to believe me. I had no part in this. I wouldn't do something like that. H-he used to not be this guy, my uncle Charlie was the kindest person in the world, he was never selfish, he was never--he's different now. He doesn't talk to me about these things, please, Jay, you have to believe me" Her voice is shaky as she pleads with the man in front of her.
And she has no idea why she cares so much what he thinks.
Jay sighs, looking down at the floor "I want to believe you but-"
Y/n lets out a sad laugh, wiping the tears that fell "But you don't. I get it" she says it quietly. Sounding defeated as she makes her way around him.
With her hand on the door knob, she looks at him over her shoulder, Jay not even meeting her eyes.
"I'm going to fix this" and with that she's out of the apartment, walking like she's on a mission.
--
Y/n pulls up to the address Trudy sent her, thankfully, Trudy was a little more willing to help her.
She sighs, looking up at the house.
This would either go really bad or really good.
Getting out of the vehicle, she walks up the walkway. She takes a deep breath as she stands in front of the door before knocking.
Her phone buzzes. Another text.
12:11pm
I love you, please come tonight
She lets out a huff, stuffing the phone back in her pocket as the door opens.
"Y/n" Voight is more than surprised to find the young woman at his door.
"I just want to start off with I had no idea, no idea that he was going to shut down intelligence. If I did I would have warned you guys or stopped it" Y/n is quick to get that out.
Voight looks at her, eyebrow raised "I didn't think you did" he says simply, stepping aside for her to enter.
"Oh, okay good" His response took her a little by surprise "Do you know why he did it? Did he give you a reason?" Y/n asks as she enters the house, turning to look at the sargent.
Voight sighs, scratching his forehead "He didn't like that he couldn't control us--We looked into his past, we figured out his been finding units and people he could control and the ones that wouldn't just simply say yes, he shut down or replaced." Hank explains, going over what they had found when they dug into Reid's past.
Y/n nods, taking in all of the information.
"I-i don't know if you know but he's my uncle, he was my parents' best friend and when they died when I was a kid he adopted me. I'm going to talk to him tonight, I'm getting Intelligence reinstated" Y/n tells the older man.
There's no doubts in her mind about it.
"Let me know what I can do to help"
--
Y/n had felt lost all day, working up the nerves to talk to her uncle.
She had gone home, changed, cleaned up the apartment and then was back out on her way to his house.
Pulling into the driveway felt different this time.
Since he had moved to Chicago, Y/n was over at his house twice a week for dinner if not more.
But it felt heavy, tense this time because she knew it would be a different situation.
As she entered the house, she could hear Charlie bustling around in the kitchen.
Now or never.
"Hey, sweetheart, I'm glad you came" Charlie says instantly, wrapping her in a hug.
All she wants is to lean into the hug, to feel the comfort she always felt with him. But she couldn't, not this time.
"Why did you shut Intelligence down" She asks quietly after a minute.
"Voight, he was-"
"Please, don't give me some story that's not true, I know you've been involved with Otero, I know this is part of that. I don't know the details and I don't want to. If you love me, you'll make this right, and stop all of it" Y/n looks at him, arms crossed.
"Y/n, honey, it's not that easy" Charlie says softly leaning on the counter that's now in between them.
"It is that easy. Reinstate Intelligence, cut ties with Otero, I don't want you to go to jail, I don't want anything to happen to you. But, you are my dad and I need you to do this for me because one day it's going to bite you in the ass- or me" Y/n continues, her eyes tearing up for the second time that day.
Charlie looks at her, tears in his own eyes because he couldn't stand seeing her upset. But he says nothing.
Y/n sighs, taking her things and walking out of the house, ignoring the calls for her to come back.
Starting her car, Y/n backs out of the driveway, tears clouding her vision as she drives down the street.
Never in a million years did she think she would feel so betrayed by her own dad. Maybe it wasn't by blood but it didn't matter.
A car in the middle of the end of the street makes her slam on the brakes unexpectantly.
"What the hell are we doing? Seriously" Y/n mutters before the driver in the other car gets out.
And it happens quick. The gun is pulled out before she registers it and then there's two loud pops and pain in her shoulder and side.
The car speeds off and then there's silence.
She's scared, struggling to breathe. She can taste the blood in her mouth as she presses one hand to her side.
She can feel her hearing going in and out, her vision is fuzzy. And then her car door is ripped open.
"Fuck, Y/n, hold on, hold on, baby" Charlie's voice feels far away as she feels one hand go behind her back, the other under her legs as he picks her up.
She groans as it causes pain to shoot through her.
"I'm sorry, honey" Charlie can barely think straight as he gets her into his car which he had driven down the end of the street when he heard the loud pops.
She can vaguely hear Charlie on the phone but can't make anything out before everything goes black.
--
Jay walks off the elevator, looking around the waiting room that's full of police.
They were just here for him a little over a month ago.
He had gotten the call from Voight at 6:52pm. Y/n had been shot.
He could feel his heart racing as he approached the team that was huddled around now.
Technically, they couldn't work it, which meant they had to rely on the other police to handle it. That was killing them.
"Y/n had nothing to do with us getting shut down. I want all of you to know that. She came to me, she had no part in that and she was trying to talk to Reid tonight to get intelligence reinstated" Voight explains and theres a mixture of sadness and relief.
They all had assumed the worst about her and now they didn't know if she was going to make it out.
That tore Jay apart. She came to his apartment, trying to convince him and he wouldn't listen. Now? He regretted talking to her the way he did.
Jay was struggling to form words "W-where was she?" he asks hesitantly.
"Down the street from my house" Reid's voice startles all of them.
His eyes are bloodshot, his face tear stained and he looks a mess. His clothes and hands are covered in blood.
Jay's stomach turns. That's her blood.
"She came to convince me to reinstate your unit, she left so upset, she was crying. I heard the shots, when I got there she had already lost s-so much blood. One to the shoulder...one to her side" Reid's voice is shaky, matching his hands.
It was odd for them, seeing him in this condition. Almost made them feel bad for him. Almost.
"I'll reinstate you all" He says simply and the team exchange glances "Hank, we need to talk, but right now. Find who did this to my girl"
They can't wrap their heads around it. He had just shut them down that morning and now they're back? Just like that?
It gave them some relief that they would be the ones to hunt the shooter down.
Reid walks away, making a phone call.
Jay looks over to Voight "Sarge...I can't leave" he says it like a plea.
He can't leave after everything she had done for him. And he had to make sure she woke up after what he said to her.
Voight nods "Alright, Jay stay here, keep us updated. The rest of you? Let's get to work"
--
Who knew sitting in a waiting room a few chairs away from Deputy Chief Charlie Reid would be so tense.
Jay did not like the man. Not one bit. And now he was stuck here, with him.
"It's Jay, right?" Reid's voice is quiet.
Jay looks up at him. Unsure of where this was going.
"Yeah" he says shortly, plainly.
Reid nods "She talks about you a lot" he says softly, a small smile on his face as he looks down at the floor, spacey eyed as if he's in a daze.
Jay has no response. He can't think about anything other than the fact Y/n could die in surgery and he would never see her again.
She was such a nuisance and he couldn't explain his feelings or their relationship but she had to wake up.
"She's always had me wrapped around her finger, ever since she was a baby. She was always the good in me" his voice trails off as a doctor in black scrubs approaches, someone Jay doesn't recognize.
"Y/n's out of surgery, she's in recovery right now, one of you can come back once we move her to a room. I'll have a nurse come back to get you" the doctor explains before walking away.
Jay lets out a shaky breath as he leans forward, his elbows resting on his knees as he looks at the floor.
He can breathe a little easier, for now.
--
Y/n comes back slowly, smell first.
She can smell disinfectant.
The beeping is next. The annoying beep of the monitors.
A voice talking. It's Charlie, he's on the phone.
Then there's feeling, the blanket under fingers, the pain through her side and shoulder.
And then sight.
She blinks a few times, the lights are insanely bright.
She tries to sit up, groaning immediately.
Charlie's by her side in seconds, literally dropping the phone.
"Hey, baby, hey. God, you scared me" His voice is shaky as he helps her sit up, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
"I-i'm o-okay" she struggles to get out from the dryness in her throat.
"Hold on, here, honey--drink this. Small sips" He says as he hands her a cup of water from the tray next to the hospital bed.
Y/n takes it with shaky hands, sipping it slowly.
She hands it back when she's done, Charlie placing the cup back on the tray.
"I remember the license plate" Y/n says immediately.
Charlie grins "That's my girl, write it down, I'll get it to Intelligence" he says as he hands her his notepad and pen.
Y/n looks at him, frozen "You mean-"
Charlie nods "I reinstated them. Voight is going to help me with the Otero situation."
Y/n smiles as she writes the license plate down from her memory.
"Thank you" Y/n says softly as he stands from the chair, taking the notepad.
"I'll send Jay in" he says, kissing her head again before leaving the room, already calling Voight.
Send Jay in?
Jay's here?
The door opens again and sure enough Jay steps in.
The red rimmed eyes, the exhausted look on his face.
Is this how he felt when she showed up when he was shot?
"We have to stop meeting like this" Jay jokes, sitting in the chair next to her bed that was just occupied by the deputy chief.
"Yeah, like I have any control in that" Y/n says smartly, rolling her eyes at him.
Jay stifles a laugh at her irritation.
"What are you doing here, Jay?" She asks, not understanding why he's there--especially after how they left things.
"Why did you stay for me?" Jay asks, referring to when she stayed at the hospital.
"I don't know..I just had to see your annoying ass again" Y/n mumbles, looking at her hands that sit in her lap.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have accused you like that. I should have listened to you. If that was the last time I saw you-"
Y/n cuts him off "Okay, no, I'm literally right here. Don't be dramatic" she says jokingly.
She knows he's serious but she's not ready to accept it yet. Not after two years of hating him.
Jay chuckles, nodding, sitting back in silence.
"I guess it's time for me to be the cook for you" He jokes after a minute.
"Shit, now I'm definitely going to be poisoned."
--
Y/n was in the hospital for a week and was sent home on strict orders that she was not cleared for duty.
it had been two days since she had gotten home and she was bored out of her mind.
The intelligence team and her coworkers from crime investigation had been in and out of her hospital room but once she gotten home, the texts and calls seemed to die down.
She knew they were all busy, working--like she should be.
And then there was a knock at the door.
Carefully, she got up from her spot on the couch, pausing the movie she had put on and stopped paying attention to.
Peeking through the peephole, her heart jumped to her throat.
Taking a deep breath, she unlocked the door, pulling it open slowly.
"To what do I owe this displeasure" she asks with her eyebrows raised.
Jay stands on the other side, his signature smile on his face, a paper bag in hand.
"I thought I would return the favor, I spent all day cooking yesterday. You shouldn't cook with your arm in a sling and your side still healing" Jay explains, Y/n getting de javu as he enters the apartment without invitation.
She watches as Jay makes his way to the kitchen, placing the bag down on the counter and unloading it in the fridge.
"Should i have poison control on speed dial?" Y/n asks with a smirk as she leans against the counter across the kitchen from Jay.
"Yes, absolutely" Jay says, playing along as he shuts the fridge doors.
"Want a beer?" Y/n offers.
Jay shrugs "Sure, has anyone updated you on the situation with Reid?" he asks, watching her walk past him, going to the fridge and getting a beer out.
Y/n sighs "Nope, He hasn't even said much, he refuses to tell me anything involving that" she explains tiredly as she hands him the beer.
"Well, we arrested Otero along with his known associates. From what Voight tells me, Reid is taking a leave of absence to clear his head. Otero will go down for attempted murder, you won't have to testify, they have footage of the whole thing from a pod." Jay explains, taking a sip of his beer.
"That's good, sounds like things are coming together--I don't know why he wouldn't tell me about the leave of absence.." Y/n trails off, frowning.
"Who knows why he does anything he does" Jay says, irritated.
He couldn't stand Reid, He didn't care who he was or if he was trying to fix the things he did. He was so arrogant.
"And who knows why you're such a pain in my ass but here we are" Y/n quips and Jay's jaw drops.
Y/n stifles a laugh at his expression, grinning at him.
"Wow, and here I am trying to help you out" Jay says in disbelief.
"Yeah by poisoning me" Y/n mutters under her breath, looking away from him and then looking back at Jay.
Jay rolls his eyes "Do you need help with anything before I go?"
--
That continued for the next week, just like Y/n had done for him, he came over every night after work.
Helped her straighten things up, made sure she was eating and taking her medication, and kept her company as best he could.
And now, two weeks after she was shot just down the street, she found herself outside of Charlie's house.
She hadn't heard from him after she was released from the hospital. It was odd, she assumed he would be around, at least check in on her. She knew he was taking a leave of absence but just a text would be nice.
When she pulled into the empty driveway, her heart sank. She had already checked his office, the places he knows he frequents for drinks or food. And nothing. He wouldn't call back, he wouldn't text back.
Now she really was alone.
Taking her phone out, she clicked on Jay's name, pressing the call button.
She hates Jay so much, so why is she calling him for comfort?
"Wow, miss me already? I just saw you yesterday" Jay says it cockily and Y/n already regrets calling.
"What are you doing right now?" She asks, not giving him an answer to his previous remark.
Jay is silent for a second, confused by the question. She sounded...upset, it made his heart clench and he wasn't sure why.
"I'm at Molly's, with Will" Jay says, confusion still in his tone.
"Okay" Y/m says simply before ending the call.
Y/n signs, starting her car as she glances at the house one more time.
God, she was going to regret this.
--
"Hell, if I know, one minute we're yelling at each other--the next I feel like I need to just be there for her. It's a fucking rollercoaster" Jay explains to his brother.
Will had looked at him curiously when the phone call ended, asking Jay what the deal with Y/n was.
"You ever consider maybe you have feelings for her?" Will questions, a shit eating grin on his face.
"What? No way, not happening" Jay shakes his head, laughing to himself at the idea.
Jay lets his mind wander though. Picturing a life with her. Waking up next to her, what would that be like?
"Uh huh" Will has a smirk on his face, taking a sip of his beer.
He knows his brother, and he knows he is in denial of his feelings.
"Well, if it isn't my favorite Halstead" Y/n says with a smile, looking at Will as she pats his shoulder "and Jay" her smile disappearing as she turns to him.
"Ouch" Will says at the sudden coldness.
"Nice to see you too, babe" Jay jokes, a smirk on his face.
The nickname catches both Y/n and Will off guard. Will coughs, choking on his beer.
Y/n freezes before scratching the back of her neck, clearing her throat before looking around "Okay, well, that's my cue to get a drink" her voice is quiet as she tries to get Hermann's attention.
"I'm just gonna go- um- talk to someone" Will says awkwardly "Nice seeing you Y/n" he says it with a smirk as he pats his brother's shoulder.
Y/n takes the opportunity, sitting on the stool Will had occupied as Hermann brings her usual drink over.
She mumbles a quiet thank you, still a little flustered from the nickname.
Jay can't take his eyes off of her, a smirk on his face still as he watches her try to keep her compusure.
Maybe there's something there after all.
"So, what's up, you sounded upset over the phone" Jay asks curiously.
And that brings her previous troubles back to the front of her mind.
"My uncle, dad, whatever--I haven't heard from him since I got out of the hospital. I went by his office, his house, places I know he frequents. Nothing, he won't return my calls or texts either"
Jay can hear the hurt in her voice as much as she tries to hide it as she looks down at the drink in front of her.
Y/n looks at him, a sad smile on her face "I know he's not the best guy, I know you all hate him. But, he's my family"
Jay frowns "Hey" he says it softly, getting her attention "You don't have to explain yourself to me. You're not wrong, I definitely do not like Reid, but you know him differently then we do. Not that the way he's ghosting you is winning him any points with me" the last part is quiet, like she isn't supposed to hear.
She can tell he's sincere about it and despite their differences and the feud between them, there's no one she would rather talk to right now.
"Thanks, Jay" For the first time since they've met it's a sincere thank you.
"What are you doing tomorrow?" It's blurted out. Jay doesn't even expect the words that just came out of his mouth.
Y/n is quiet for a moment, unsure of where this is going. She can feel the air leave her lungs and the panic set in.
And she feels insanely grateful when Kelly Severide interrupts, trying to rope Jay into a discussion with one of the doctors from Med.
Jay's eyes linger on her before turning to the commotion, replying Kelly. She takes that moment to slide off the stool, making her way towards the back of the Molly's where the patio is located.
That was definitely rude to leave like that but the panic in her chest overcame any logic.
Thankfully it was unbearably cold tonight so the patio was fairly empty. No one to witness her panic.
She found herself leant up against the brick wall, her hands planted on her knees as she took deep breaths.
The realization and panic was hitting her all at once and it was just too much process.
She never had good luck with relationships, whether it was boyfriends or family. Someone always ended up leaving.
And she hadn't missed the fact that her relationship with Jay was edging closer and closer to something more than what it was meant to be.
He had gone from being her enemy, to sort of friends, and then sort of whatever the hell they were now.
That was never supposed to happen.
She was supposed to help intelligence out with one case and then she would be gone, how did she get here?
Two months ago the thought of Jay would make her sick to her stomach. And now he was the only that could make the noise stop.
Y/n did her best to ignore it, to ignore that ache in her chest around him. The warmth she got from being in the same room as him. And the flutter in her chest at his flirty nicknames that were clearly meant to catch her off guard.
And instead of facing those feelings like mature, sane adult would--she did the opposite.
Gathering herself, she slipped out the side gate, making her way back to her car that was parked just down the street.
--
The next day was slow, Y/n dragged herself out of bed, ate a small breakfast, had a nice hot comforting cup of coffee and made her way to the couch.
That was where she found herself at 1:42pm on a Saturday when there was a knock at her door.
She frowned, wondering who that could be.
She pauses the show she had been binging, making her way to the front door.
Her heart stopped when she peeked through the peephole.
Jay stood on the other side, hands in his pockets as he waited.
"Shit" Y/n whispers quietly.
Her mind wanders to the calls and texts she had ignored from him the night before.
As soon as she was driving away from Molly's, her phone began buzzing.
8:25pm
Are you okay?
8:28pm
Okay, now you are really starting to freak me out. No one can find you.
8:40pm
Y/n pick up the phone.
8:50pm
At least tell me you're safe.
She would have to face him eventually. She probably seemed crazy the way she left last night.
Taking a deep breath, she twisted the door knob, pulling the door open.
"Hey" She mutters softly, stepping to the side for him to enter the apartment.
Jay looks like his eyes are going to pop out of his head as he looks at her.
"Hey? That's all I get? What the hell happened last night, one minute you were there the next you were gone. I had everyone looking for you" The words tumble out of his mouth and he's not yelling. He's not angry. He's worried, concerned.
Y/n looks down at her feet, contemplating if she should be honest.
"I panicked"
The words are quiet. But Jay hears them.
"Panicked, what? Why? Did someone make you uncomfortable?" Jay is now filled with rage at the thought, but then that softens "Did I...make you...uncomfortable?"
Jay sounds like a kicked puppy.
Y/n doesn't know what to say. Her mouth opens and then closes.
Jay feels like the air was knocked out of him.
"I'm sorry, for whatever I did. Tell me how I can fix it" He's pleading now.
"Do you want us to be...something?" Y/n is hesitant to ask. Because she knows the answer and part of her wants it but part of her wants to put the wall back up and go back to being enemies.
"Yes" Jay answers simply, not even questioning it.
She falls silent again.
"You can't tell me you don't feel it too." Jay mutters softly, his hands her itching to hold her but he waits.
"I'm scared" it hits him now why she left last night. Why she panicked.
Y/n continues, still not looking him in the eyes.
"it was easy, hating you was easy. But then everything trickled into more and you got shot and I felt like I couldn't breathe. And then I stayed around and the more we were together the less I hated you the more I loved you. You're the only person I want when somethings wrong and that's so scary because everyone has always left"
The confession is raw and vulnerable, the tears in her eyes and the way her hands tremble slightly make her feel weak.
But then there's Jay, who doesn't look at her out of pity, who looks at her with love.
Jay doesn't fight it this time, his hands on either side of her face so she has to look at him.
"I'm not going anywhere. Let me prove it to you"
His blue eyes search hers.
"Okay"

Enemies
Description: Y/n hates Jay.
Warnings: someone gets shot, mentions of blood, Charlie Reid (literally cannot stand him)
Okay, I genuinely could not imagine disliking Jay. I don't know if that's weird but I just couldn't picture it??? But I thought this would be an interesting change of pace from my normal writing!
Also I included my enemy Charlie Reid in here and it DOES NOT follow the storyline but he is still very much not a likable character just thought it would be interesting!
Tuesday morning, 9:45. It started as a regular Tuesday for Jay, getting to work was uneventful. Voight sent him and Haley to question a witness.
But little did Jay know his whole day was going to turn upside down.
"What that was a bust" Haley sighs as they descend the few steps outside of the blue town house behind them.
"Yeah seriously, I can't believe we've been on this crew for a week and nothing" his voice is dripping with annoyance.
They had been chasing a crew that had been trafficking guns throughout the city. They caught wind of it through Adam's CI after a shooting with ghost guns, which was harder to track than anything.
And that's when the call came through the radio.
"All units. Active shooter at 1531 Bridgeway street. Reports of three active shooters"
Jay and Haley share a look, Haley already responding.
"5021 Henry, hold us down as responding to that active shooter call"
The rest of the team followed shortly after, responding to the dispatch.
This had to be the crew they were chasing.
As they speed down the street, and finally reach the address, Jay's truck comes to a screeching halt in front of the supermarket.
Adam and Kim are already inside, Adam's putting pressure on a woman's wound who looks to be about 50 years old.
Kim is doing the same with a man about 30 years old.
There's three patrol officers trying to help the other victims that are still alive.
Kim looks up, seeing Jay and Haley, she can only shake her head as they hear the ambulances arriving outside.
The hardest about this case was the crew was getting out within a few minutes tops, always gone by the time police arrived.
The security cameras were always wiped, as if someone hacked into them and disabled them beforehand.
As the paramedics came in, taking each living victim out and the CSU team came in to start, intelligence team met outside, debriefing eachother.
That's when the Deputy Chief pulls into the parking lot.
"Deputy Chief's here" Adam says with an annoyed tone.
They had the new deputy chief on their asses which was increasingly annoying.
Voight nods as the chief approaches them "Sir" he greets the man simply.
"Sargent, same crew?" He asks it simply. Charlie Reid was many things, and getting on the intelligence teams nerves was his main waste of time lately.
"We think so, in and out within three minutes, same MO, three shooters, ghost guns, no prints" Voight rattles off the details.
Reid looks around the scene "lot of bodies" he says simply.
No shit sherlock.
Jay rolls his eyes.
That's when a black SUV pulls into the lot.
"The calvarys here" Reid says before making his way to the SUV.
The entire team watches, confused.
"Who the hell is-" Kim begins to say before the driver side door opens.
"No way" Jay says it under his breath but the whole team knows how he feels about the woman that just stepped out.
Y/n Y/l/n.
Y/n got along with most of the intelligence team. Except for one. Jay.
There was some unknown reason fueling the hatred between the two, mostly Y/n feeding into it.
Adam chuckles, nudging Jay "your best friend" he says quietly, amusement in his tone.
"Shut up" Jay tells him as Reid and Y/n make their way over.
"Her and Reid look awfully close" Haley whispers quietly, the team nodding in agreements.
"Well, if it isn't my favorite intelligence unit...well most of you anyway" Y/n teases, a smirk on her face as she glances at Jay.
Could this day get any worse?
"Y/n" Voight nodded, an amused look on his face.
Y/n worked in crime investigation but had a special set of skills to help her profile and deal with cases like this due to the time she spent with the FBI years ago.
She had worked with the intelligence a handful of times, always being super helpful in their cases.
But always got on Jay's nerves in the process.
Jay himself never had an issue with her really, until she had one with him.
Since the day they met, they were butting heads. When the two were in the room you could feel the hatred radiating off of her.
"I thought Y/n would be a helpful addition to your team for this case, you have her as long as you need" Reid tells the team, looking very proud of his idea.
"Nice to have you back, Y/l/n" Kevin nods, patting her shoulder.
"Thanks Kev" Y/n smiles, sending a glare Jay's way.
Jay shakes his head, walking away from the group.
This is going to be fun.
--
"So, Reid already filled me in on everything. I did some digging myself before today, I came up with a possible suspect that fits a description you guys got from the second shooting." Y/n explains, sticking the picture up on the drawing board.
"Curtis Manley. He's a known offender, got caught carrying without a liscense, also arrested multiple counts for intent to distrbute heroin. He drives the same car as described speeding away from the first three shootings." Y/n rattles off the information to the team.
"So how does he go from drugs to shooting up supermarkets and venues?" Jay pipes up from his spot where he's perched up on the side of his desk.
Y/n lets out some air from her nose, side eyeing Jay "Oh, I am so glad you ask" she says sarcastically.
The team does their best to stifle a laugh, Voight stands there with his arms crossed over his chest, a small smirk on his face.
"Curtis has been hanging out with this guy" she pauses, sticking the picture up on the board "Miles Neelan, he's a known higher up in the Wild Kings. They're a gang that started out small and quiet and this might be there way to make things interesting, get their name out. Miles also matches the description of one of the other offenders."
"Alright, let's start talking to CI's" Voight instructs "Halstead, Y/l/n, I want you to sit on Curtis, he does not leave your sight. I'll work on getting a warrant" the older man goes back to his office before there can be any protests.
Y/n shakes her head, looking at the ceiling "What did I do to deserve this?" she says it under her breath.
Jay glares at her "Yeah like I want to sit a car with you for god knows how long" he says, irritation in his voice as he stands up, gathering his coat, gun and keys.
"Maybe this Curtis guy will put me out of my misery if I'm lucky" Y/n says as she slips her coat on, making her way down the stairs.
Jay doesn't respond, following her down the stairs but not before Haley can shout "Good luck!" after them.
--
"Do you have to breathe that loud?" Y/n huffs from the passenger seat, glaring at Jay.
"I'm literally just breathing, do you have to nitpick everything that I do?" Jay's fully pissed off now. It's been two hours of this. Y/n picking on him. Making comments.
"Yes" Y/n answers simply, her eyes trained on the diner Curtis had entered.
There's a moment of silence before Jay lets his curiosity take over.
"So, how do you know Reid?" He, along with the rest of the team, were wondering that question since this morning.
Reid had already filled her in before today meaning this had been talked about before. Everyone was still trying to figure out the new deputy chief but so far they didn't like him.
Y/n hesitates, thinking for a moment "He was my parents' best friend, Uncle Charlie. Helped raise me after my parents' died, the only one I have left" her voice is monotone, her eyes not leaving the diner.
She knows her uncle had gone off the reservation more than once in the past few years. She tried to distance herself from that as much as possible.
"Oh" Jay says, clearly shocked.
"I know you guys have been digging into him" Y/n says it softly and Jay feels like he just got whiplash.
Does that mean Reid knows? Is she there to rat on them? Was this all some sort of game?
"I'm not spying for him, I don't involve myself in his agenda, I do my job and that's it, in case you were wondering"
Before Jay can answer, three gunshots ring out in the air.
"Was that from-"
"The diner? Yeah" Y/n answers, hurriedly getting out of the car and sprinting across the street, gun drawn and at her side.
Jay's hot on her tail, calling the shooting in.
They share a look, nodding before Y/n pulls the door open, Jay making his way inside and Y/n following.
Another shot rings out.
The patrons of the diner are hiding behind tables and booths, there's a body in front of the register.
The shots are coming from the back of the diner.
As the two make their way into the back, Y/n comes face to face with one of the shooters, a mask over his face.
"Drop it" Y/n instructs, the gun pointed a the masked man.
He lifts the gun and within the blink of an eye Y/n pulls the trigger, taking him down.
She hears another shot ring out from the direction Jay had split off to go after another shooter.
"Halstead?! You good?!" Y/n yells, no response.
She makes her way to the other side of the kitchen, catching a glimpse of someone running out the back door.
But the sight in front of her causes her to freeze.
"Shit' she mumbles, Jay's down a bullet having gone through his vest in his left abdomen.
"Stay with me, Jay" It's the first time she's used his first name in the the two years they've known each other. Her hands are shaky as she rips her coat off, bundling it up and pressing it to the wound.
Jay groans, a hand going out to her arm.
"I know, I know, I'm sorry but i have to stop the bleeding" Y/n says it softly, her voice shaking.
"Halstead! Y/l/n!" Voight's voice rings through the diner.
"Back here! We need paramedics! Jay's down!" Y/n shouts, unable to take her eyes off of the man that she hates so much.
There's voices and shuffling before two paramedics come in, pushing her out of the way and taking over working on Jay.
She follows them out to the ambulance, Jay on the stretcher in and out of concioussness.
Y/n sees the team outside waiting, she looks at them as if asking for permission.
She knows they're closer to Jay. She has no right to go with him. But with a nod from Voight, she's climbing into the back of the ambulance.
She's quiet as the ambulance takes off, patrol cars escorting them to the hospital.
"Y/n" It's quiet, but Jay says her name, like he has something to say but can't get it out.
"I'm here" Y/n says softly, gripping his hand in hers.
--
Y/n is pacing in the hallway, away from the waiting room where the other cops wait to hear something. Jay's brother is there, Will, he was a mess when Jay first came in.
Y/n remembers the look on his face, the feeling in her gut. It should have been her.
"Y/n!" She hears her name called from down the hall.
"I'm okay, I'm fine, Uncle Charlie" Y/n breathes out, her hands are still shaky as the older man reaches her.
"Are you sure? You didn't get hurt?" His voice is filled with worry as he looks her over for any signs of injury.
Y/n shakes her head "I didn't- but he did" her voice is full of sadness, tears in her eyes.
"Oh, honey..." Charlie frowns, pulling his niece closer and wrapping his arms around her.
Haley catches sight of the interaction, curiosity making her wonder.
No one on the intelligence team trusted Reid and now she's seeing him embrace the detective?
"I have to go take care of something, call me if you need anything okay?" Charlie's voice is soft he presses a kiss to her head.
"Okay" Y/n nods before her uncle makes his way back down the hallway.
"So, you and Reid" Haley's voice makes Y/n jump and she can sense something different in Haley's tone.
They had always been friends, working well together and occasionally getting together for drinks.
"What? No, no, no. He's my uncle" Y/n explains, her eyes wide at the accusation.
Haley nods slowly, still eyeing her friend.
"I know you guys don't trust him, I know he's done some things and handled things wrong.. I have no part in that. He's just the only family I have left" Y/n explains carefully.
Haley nods, feeling a little relieved at the explanation.
"Want to come sit with me?" she asks quietly and Y/n nods, following the blonde down the hallway.
The rest of the team had left, wanting to catch the other two shooters.
Haley sits, motioning the empty seat to her right. Y/n takes a seat, her hands fidgeting nervously.
"It's good you were with him, probably saved his life" Haley says, trying to ease her friend's mind.
Y/n nods, letting out a shaky laugh "I still hate him, he's annoying as hell. I still want him to make it though"
Haley laughs, even after all this Y/n's still focused on the hatred she has for Jay.
--
It starts with sound, Jay can hear the beeping of the monitor. He can hear someone next to him breathing. Then comes smell, the smell of disinfectant. Then touch, he can feel the blanket under his fingers, feel the itchy hospital gown. Then sight.
First it's bright lights, then a head of red hair, then Will's face comes into view.
"Well look who's back to the land of the living" Will jokes, noticing he's awake immediately.
Jay clears his throat, feeling how scratchy it is.
"Here" Will hands him a cup of water.
Jay takes a sip carefully, feeling pain in his side that makes him wince.
"Want me to send her in?" Will asks once Jay's finished with the water.
"Haley?" Jay asks, it's the only 'her' he would think Will's talking about.
"Um, no, Haley left awhile ago--You're biggest fan" Will says it with an amused tone.
Jay is more than confused, his face scrunched up.
"Y/n, she refused to leave until she knew you were awake" Will explains and Jay is beyond shocked "I don't know why you always complain about her, she's very nice" he continues.
Jay literally can't believe any of things he's hearing.
"I'll send her in" Will says, patting his brother's leg, leaving the room before Jay can say no.
A minute later, the door to the room opens again.
He's not sure what exactly shocks him more. The tear stains and red eyes or the fact Y/n's been there since at least 1:30 and it's now going on 8pm.
"Oh, great, you're awake" her voice is dripping with sarcasm.
"I couldn't leave you with no source of irritation" Jay says jokingly.
Y/n rolls her eyes.
"Thanks for staying and for helping save my life" Jay says seriously, glancing over her exhausted frame as she stands with her arms crossed.
"No problem, would have done it for anyone" she says it with a shrug, acting casual. Realistically there is nothing casual in this circumstance.
She was terrified when she saw him bleeding out on the floor. And terrified waiting for him to wake up. Would she admit that to herself or anyone? No, absolutely not.
"The team got your shooter and the other guy. Case closed." Y/n informs him.
There's a slight pang of disappointment in his chest. "Guess that means you go back to Crime Investigations, huh?" Jay asks nonchalantly.
"Actually no, I'll be sticking around to help out while you're healing" Y/n has a smirk on her face as she stands up straighter.
Jay raises an eyebrow "Oh, so now you're taking my job. Guess your uncle will gladly make sure that happens" it came out harsher than he meant it. He can say her draw back into herself immediately.
Uncle is a sensitive topic. Got it.
"I'm sorry, I meant that a joke. it came out meaner than I expected" Jay is sincere in his apology.
Y/n shrugs, heading for the door "I'll let him know to transfer you to evidence" she says, smirking at him over her shoulder before leaving the room.
Jay chuckles, shaking his head.
--
About a week later, Jay was released from the hospital. And the first night home there was a knock on the door.
Jay made his way to the door, opening it to find an amusing picture on the other side.
Y/n stood on the other side of the door, multiple Tupperware containers in her hands.
"Are you busy?" Y/n asks immediately, no hi's or hello's.
"Nope" Jay answers, confused as to what is happening.
"Good" Y/n says simply, carefully squeezing past him and entering the apartment. She makes her way to the kitchen as if she's been there before, placing the containers down on the counter.
"Y/n, what are you doing?" Jay asks, squinting his eyes at her.
Y/n doesn't answer right away, opening the fridge and beginning to place the containers inside.
"I figured you would either be struggling to cook or ordering out, and you really should not be standing in the kitchen cooking--you probably can't cook any way-- but you need your rest. You just have to heat them up in the microwave, I cooked them yesterday" Y/n explains, finishing arranging the containers and shutting the fridge doors.
Jay isn't sure how to answer, he can only stare.
"Did you poison it or something?" Jay asks, confused.
"Obviously" Y/n answers simply "No, Jay I didn't poison it, if I wanted to get rid of you I would not do it by poison."
"Well that's not much more comforting" Jay jokes, a grin on his face.
"Want a beer?"
--
That night was the start of many, Y/n came over, made sure he had eaten, taken his medication, straightened up the apartment.
She still had insults rolling off her tongue, she still was not ready to admit she didn't hate him but they were working on it.
Everyone was piled into Molly's, Y/n sat at the end of the bar, away from most of the patrons. She wasn't really familiar with anyone other than the intelligence unit so she liked to stick to herself mostly.
"Now I wondered what girl as pretty as you is sitting all by herself--then I noticed who it was" Jay's voice came from behind her and she smirked as she took a sip of her drink, spinning around on the bar stool.
"Gee, to what do I owe this pleasure? Why don't you go bother the team?" Y/n rolled her eyes as Jay stood in front of her in a green shirt and blue jeans.
Damn he looked good, she would admit that.
Jay shrugs, taking a seat next to her "Thought I would keep you company, like you have for me" he says simply and Y/n looks at him wide eyed, pointing a finger at him.
"Jay Halstead, speak a word of that to anyone and I will poison you"
Jay chuckles, waving Stella over, who nods-- bringing him his usual beer.
"Can we also get another of whatever the hell she's drinking" Jay asks and Stella looks at him curiously.
"Sure thing, be right back" she says with a kind smile, walking away to get the drink.
"See? That's how you talk to a human" Jay says smartly.
"Oh I talk to humans like that--just not you" Y/n gives him a sarcastic smile.
Jay rolls his eyes, shaking his head before taking a sip of the beer in hand.
"Here you go" Stella places the drink down in front of Y/n "So how do you two know each other?" she asks curiously.
"We work together unfortunately" Y/n sighs, clearly unhappy to think about it, before sliding off the stool and heading for the bathroom.
Jay scoots her drink to sit in front of him, keeping a close eye on it. He know what could happen if someone, especially a woman leaves their drink unattended.
"What's her deal?" Stella asks, stifling a laugh.
"Honestly, no idea, we've just never gotten along" Jay says with a shrug.
"Uh huh" Stella says with an amused tone, already walking away to the other side of the bar to get the download from Kevin.
If there was one thing that the firefighters, doctors/nurses, and cops had in common was that they were all about gossip.
Y/n returned a minute later, noticing her drink in front of Jay now.
"Oh, so now you poison me before I can get the chance to get you?" Y/n eyes him suspiciously.
"Obviously" Jay answers, scooting the drink over to her.
Y/n notices the red hair before Jay does as his brother approaches the two.
"Well aren't you two all cozied up?" He teases and Y/n makes a fake gagging noise.
"Please, I would rather burn my hands on a hot grill than be cozied up to this guy" Y/n says, clearly offended by the joke.
Jay looks taken a back, his hand on his chest "Yeah, right back at ya. You are no walk in the park" he shoots back.
Will shakes his head, looking at Y/n "You've literally barely left his side since he got shot" the red head is more than amused now.
Y/n looks at both of the Halstead's, mouth open before looking at Jay "Seriously. I have a reputation here! That never happened" she says before standing up and taking her drink.
Without a word, she joins Kim and Haley at a table.
They both look at her amused, eyebrows raised as she is quite literally huffing and puffing out of frustration.
"I don't know how you guys do it" Y/n mumbles, looking back at Jay and Will talking.
"He's really not that bad" Kim says with a chuckle.
Y/n gives her a glare, Kim putting her hands up in defense.
"Okayyy, let's talk about something else"
--
The next morning, the team is sat at their desks getting ready to start the day--that is until a certain deputy chief walks upstairs.
Reid says nothing but he does glance at Y/n who is fully into a conversation with Kevin, pausing when she sees her uncle. He makes his way into Voight's office, slamming the door shut behind him.
Y/n and the rest of the team share worried looks, pausing what they were doing and just waiting in silence. Something about the way her uncle walked in felt very wrong, heavy.
Trudy walked up the steps next, along with a woman and man in suits, badges hung around their necks.
Now they knew something was up.
Then the door to Voight's office is ripped open, Reid leaving the office and standing in the center of everything.
"Effective immediately, this Intelligence unit is shut down. All of you will get reassigned by the end of the week, please leave any work related files or information at your desks"

There will probably be a part 2!

Description: Reader is attacked and goes into a dissociative state that no one but Jay can get her out of. I really did not have a title for this one and I am not trying to romanticize trauma or sexual assaults in anyway. Also I did not proofread this
Pairings: Jay Halstead x Reader
Warnings: trauma, reader is attacked by a man, no rape but the man tries
Y/n frowned as her alarm went off, sighing as woke up to an empty bed.
Jay had been undercover for the past few days and they weren't sure when he would come out, it was a favor to a friend he had in the gang unit.
It was safe to say Y/n was lonely without her long time boyfriend in their shared apartment.
Finally willing herself to get out of bed, Y/n made her way to the bathroom, completing her morning routine before getting dressed and securing her gun and badge in place on her hip.
She takes a second to stop in front of the fridge, a sticky note placed on the door.
"I love you" written in Jay's handwriting. It made her heart swell but also made her sad because she just wanted to see him.
Collecting her keys and phone, Y/n slips her coat on before making her way out of the apartment.
Quickly making her way down the stairs and outside of the apartment building she's met by the sight of Kim in her car waiting for her.
Y/n is more than confused, looking at her friend and literally scratching her head.
"D-did we plan this or am I losing it?" Y/n questions, gesturing to Kim's car as she ducks her head into the passenger side window.
Kim shrugs "What I can't just pick up my best friend?" she asks in a teasing tone.
Y/n laughs, opening the car door and sliding into the passenger seat.
"I won't complain, I am always up for a girls ride to work" Y/n says with a smile as Kim puts the car in drive.
"So, where's Adam? He didn't want to drive with you?" Y/n questions curiously.
Kim sighs "He went in earlier with Kev, said they had to check some surveillance" she explains.
Y/n nods "So how's Mack doing with school? I know she was having trouble last time I saw her" she asks, looking out of the window.
"Yeah, she's doing better I think, she's got a math tutor to help" Kim explains, stopping at the red light.
"Oh good, man I needed a math tutor when I was in school, hated it" Y/n mumbles the last part, Kim laughing at her friends disdain.
---
"Y/n with me, Adam with Kev, Kim with Haley" Voight instructs, looking around at the group as they all got their vests on.
"Swat will enter with us, Y/n, Kim and I will take the front, Adam, Haley and Kev take the back" he continues, assigning everyone to an entrance.
The team was gearing up to execute a warrant on a house they believed a suspect was holding children that were being trafficked.
Everyone gave quick responses of agreement, getting in their respected vehicles and driving off to the address.
"How you holding up without Jay?" Voight asks after a few minutes, keeping his eyes on the road.
"I'm okay" she says quietly, looking out the window.
Before Hank could ask anymore, they had pulled up to the street, parking a little farther down the road.
The rest of the team followed suit before they made their way to the house, everyone getting into their positions.
Kim crashes the door, announcing their presence.
Voight and Y/n follow suit, the swat team members behind.
"Y/n search the basement, Kim take the hall" Voight instructs, everyone splitting off to the clear the house.
Y/n makes her way the basement, opening the door and pointing her flashlight down the steps.
As she makes her way down the stairs, she gets an eerie feeling but as she clears it finds nothing, that is until she feel a sharp pain in the back of her head, getting knocked down.
Her gun knocked out of her hands and across the floor, there's hands grabbing at her and rolling her over.
A man, much bigger than her towers over her and she tries to fight him, letting out a scream as the man picks her up.
"Shut up, you stupid bitch" the man curses at her, dropping her into a dark corner of the basement.
Before she can react the man is kneeling down on top of her, ripping her sweater.
"You're gonna be sorry you came in here" His voice is rough and he smells of sweat.
There's tears in her eyes now and it feels like she can't breathe.
She can faintly hear someone calling her name upstairs and just as the man reaches down, unbuttoning her pants there's footsteps running down the stairs.
"Chicago pd!" Adam's voice is the first she hears before the man is ripped off of her.
Kevin is the one to first see the state she's in, shaking, tears in her eyes as she tries her best to cover herself with her now ripped open sweater.
"I got you, I got you" His voice is soft as he takes his coat off, wrapping it around her, y/n flinching slightly.
It feels like she's underwater, the voices around her are muffled, vision hazy as Kevin helps her up.
Adam's already called for an ambulance and relayed what happened to the rest of the team after handing the guy off to another officer.
They help her up the stairs, guiding her out to the ambulance for the paramedics to check her out.
Kevin and Adam join Voight, Haley and Kim on the sidewalk, glancing back at their friend.
"How is she?" Voight asks, looking at Kevin and Adam.
"She won't say anything, definitely in shock" Kevin answers quietly.
"I don't know what would have happened if we didn't get there in time-- he was trying to-" Adam can't get the words out, he can't say it.
The team understands and they all feel sick.
Voight already tried to get ahold of the detective in touch with Jay but nothing. He knew if he blew his cover by calling him it could put him in danger.
So the best he could do right now is wait for the message to get to him, for them to pull him out.
One of the paramedics came up to the team "She's okay to go, just some bruising and she has a mild concussion. She needs to stay awake for the next few hours-- she should really go to the hospital to get fully checked out but she's refusing" the last part is directed to Voight before the paramedic walks away.
Voight instructs the team to finish processing the house with the crime scene techs before heading over to the ambulance.
Making his way over to his trunk, Hank digs around, finding a CPD sweatshirt that had been in there for a while. He shuts the trunk, looking at Y/n for a second before making his way over.
"Hey, kid" Voight sighs, sitting on the step, next to Y/n who is wrapped up in a blanket.
No response. Just staring ahead.
"I shouldn't have sent you down there alone" The older man says with a different tone in his voice. Regret.
Y/n blinks a couple times, slowly looking at Hank "Sorry, what?" she asks, clearly not having heard him.
Hank shakes his head, frowning "Never mind, put this on and then we can head back to the district".
Y/n doesn't respond, taking the sweatshirt from her boss and slipping it over the ripped sweater before discarding the now ripped up clothing.
Wordlessly, the two make their way back to Voight's suv.
Once they're both inside, the older man starts the vehicle, glancing at Y/n as she stares ahead, like she's in another world.
--
Back at the district, Y/n is sat at her desk. It was more out of habit, she had started the computer up but was just staring, unable to focus. Unable to think about work.
She felt stupid, for feeling this way, like she was being dramatic. But she just couldn't shake it.
Hank and Trudy watched her from his office, trying to figure out what to do.
Jay was being pulled out of undercover but it was probably going to take a little time. So, they called the next best option.
The team started to trickle back in from the crime scene, each carefully glancing at their coworker, finding her staring off into space.
Kim makes her way over to her desk, crouching down to be at eye level with her friend.
"Hey" she starts softly "How are you doing?" it's quiet, but loud enough to hear.
The rest of the team tries to focus on their work but can't help but glance over.
It takes a minute, Y/n looking at her friend slowly "Hm? I-I'm going to get some coffee" and just like that she's making her way to the break room.
Kim sighs, glancing at Adam as she makes her way back to her desk with a frown.
It all felt a little heavy and it was clearly taking a toll on their friend.
A certain red head is escorted by an officer up the steps, looking around at the team.
Voight steps out of his office approaching Will "Hey, Will, thanks for coming" he says lowly as they shake hands.
"Yeah, of course. How is she?" Will asks, peeking around Voight to the break room where Y/n is.
"About the same as when we spoke a couple hours ago" Voight explains and Will nods before heading for the break room.
He finds her at the counter, staring at the empty mug in her hands.
"Hey, how's my favorite sister in law?" he says it softly and more like a joke, walking further into the room.
Y/n looks up at him, blinking for a second. Not answering.
"Will?" It comes out as a question, not sure why he's there.
"It's me, how are you doing?" he asks again gently.
Y/n shrugs, placing the mug down and crossing her arms over her chest.
Will nods, understanding he won't get an answer right now.
"Is Jay here?" She knows it's dumb, she knows she sounds like a kid and she knows he's undercover.
Will shakes his head "No, not yet. They're trying to pull him out but Voight said he's not sure how long it will take" the red head explains.
Y/n just nods, slowly, eyes wide as she stares at the wall ahead of her.
"Alright, I'm taking you home. I'll be right back" he doesn't wait for a response, leaving the room and going to Voight's office, knocking on the doorframe.
"I'm going to take her home, I don't think there's much for her to do here. I'll stay with her until Jay gets home" Will says, his hands in the pockets of his jacket. Looking between Voight and Trudy.
Voight nods "Sounds good. I'll let you know if I hear anything more" .
Trudy nods, patting Will's shoulder as she walks out of the office.
--
It's been five hours since the incident. Three since Will has heard Y/n talk. She hadn't moved from the spot she sat on the couch when they got to the apartment she shared with Jay.
Will had put on the tv, settling on a random show but he couldn't stop checking on Y/n.
When Voight called, he didn't go into too many details, Will got the idea. He couldn't imagine how Y/n felt. How scared she was.
He couldn't blame her for going into the sort of dissociative state she's in. Will had seen it a hundred times patients that came into the ED after something like that or worse. Dr. Charles had explained to him before that some people go into a dissociative state to protect themselves.
As Will checked the time, he hears keys at the door.
Standing up, Will makes his way to the door, glancing at Y/n in her frozen state still.
The door opens, Jay entering the apartment.
He looks tired and panicked.
"How is she? What happened? They said something happened and she has a concussion-" Jay's rambling, looking past Will to look for Y/n.
Will puts a hand up, blocking his brother "She was attacked when they were searching a house. I don't know details but the guy was trying to do things to her" the eldest Halstead says it cautiously.
Jay freezes "You mean..?"
He doesn't have to finish. They both understand. Will only nods, looking down at the ground.
"They got there before he could go too far" Will says quietly, not that it makes anything better "She hasn't talked much since it happened".
Jay doesn't say anything making his way around Will frantically, he has to see her. He has to be with her.
"Babe?" Jay's voice is shaky as he crouches down in front of her, meeting her eyes.
It takes a second for her to focus, to realize. But when she does. It's like she can breathe again.
She takes in a deep breath, tears rushing to her eyes "Jay? You're here? How?" her voice is shaky and her lip quivers slightly.
"I'm here, I'm here, baby" Jay's voice is shaky, the sight of her being in pain or upset is enough to bring tears to his own eyes "What do you need?" he asks softly.
"Can you just hold me?" Y/n feels small, like a little child as she meets her boyfriend's eyes.
Jay doesn't hesitate, moving to sit next to her on the couch and wrapping his arms around her, pulling her into him. One hand on the back of her head as he buries her face into his chest.
That's when the sobs start.
Jay's heart breaks as he rubs her back.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry I wasn't there. I should have protected you" Jay's voice cracks, the sadness clear in his voice.
Y/n sniffles, her hands holding on tight to the fabric of his shirt.
"Y-you're here now, that's all I need" she says softly and it's true. That's all she needed.
Jay didn't fix it. He didn't reverse it. But he helped ease the pain, made her feel safe and secure.
It won't ever go away but she'll heal over time with his help.

âDo i need to call you an ambulance?â
Description: Just something silly! Reader is really drunk and only wants Jay
Y/n giggled at Violetâs story, something Cap and Tony had messed up on shift earlier in the day.
âLadies, more shots?âStella suggested, a smirk on her face as she placed the shot glasses down on the table.
âOh Iâm gonna be so drunkâ Kim laughs out, reaching for the shot, making Y/n nod in agreement.
âItâs okay, we deserve it, itâs been so long since weâve all been outâ Y/n says maybe a little too loudly but not really caring with the amount of alcohol in her system.
The group had decided on a ladies night to relieve some stress and to catch up without the guys around.
It was something they did monthly usually but they werenât able to have a night all together for a couple months now.
After that last shot, Y/n was deifnetely feeling it but now instead of being all giggly and happy she had one thing on her mind.
Jay.
Her and Jay were partners, best friends, they told each other everything. But she was also in love with him.
It started after a case they worked, Y/n had gotten injured and Jay had never left her side.
While he helped her get back to her full healthy self, she realized Jay noticed every detail about her. Things she did when she was nervous or overly stressed, he knew how she took her coffee exactly, he even knew how she was feeling without a word.
And slowly she began to realize, she knew details about Jay no one else did, not because he told her but just because she watched him. She was constantly thinking about him.
âOh no, are you thinking about Jay again?â Violet sighs, finding her friend with her chin resting in her hand, looking like sheâs in a daze.
âWhat? Me? Nooooâ Y/n exaggerates, gasping as if offended.
Kim and Stella laugh, giggling at their friend.
âMaybeâ Y/n sighs in defeat.
Before anyone else can say anything, Y/n is off the stool she was on, making her way outside, phone in her head.
She stares at the phone, debating if she really wanted to call but before she could even stop herself, her thumb was already pressing the call button.
ââ
Jayâs eyes slowly opened, hearing his phone ringing.
He groans, feeling around for the device that buzzes on his nightstand.
His face is still smushed into the pillow, tangled into the sheets, fully enveloped in the warmth of sleep.
Without even looking, he hits the phone screen, hoping itâs the answer button as he puts the phone to his ear.
âHalsteadâ he grumbles tiredly, not even bothering to check who it is.
âHelloooo, detectiveâ
And heâs immediately awake. Fully sitting up now.
âY/n?â Jay questions, a small lopsided smile on his face. Boy, did he have it bad.
âI need helpâ Y/nâs voice is serious now, on the other end of the phone she leans against the brick wall outside of Mollyâs.
That has Jay frowning âAre you okay? Where are you? Do i need to call you an ambulance?â
âIâm at Mollyâsâ Y/n sighs.
Jayâs already out of bed, pulling on a shirt.
âStay thereâ
ââ
Jay speeds down the street, pulling up quickly to Mollyâs.
He knew he was probably being irrational, maybe sheâs just drunk but his mind went to the worst and his heart was racing, which led to him speeding to Mollyâs.
When Jay enters the bar, he can feel the buzzing of the patrons.
Its not very full, so itâs easy for him to spot the group of laughing women.
Y/nâs back is to him, the first to notice as he approaches is Stella.
âOoo Jay, come to join ladies night?â The fire lieutenant jokes, wiggling her eyebrows.
Kim has an amused look on her face as Y/nâs eyes light up at Jayâs name.
âNope, iâve come to take a certain detective homeâ he says with a smirk and as if itâs on que, Y/n spins around on her stool, leaning against the table.
Sheâs got a lopsided smirk on her face, clearly drunk, her face flushed.
âWell, well, well, nice to see you detective Halstead. What brings you to this fine establishment?â She asks, wiggling her eyebrows.
Jay laughs, crossing his arms over his chest as he leans down to be closer.
âHmmmm, actually it happens a little birdy calledâ he says teasingly.
Y/n can feel her cheeks heat up, the girls behind her watching the scene intently.
Everyone knew they were pining after each other and everyone was just waiting for the moment.
Y/n doesnât respond, spinning around to her friends âWell, ladies. I will see you laterâ she fake salutes, making the girls laugh.
âI need to pay my tab and then letâs blow this popsicle standâ Y/n says pointedly, leaning up to kiss Jayâs cheek before heading to the bar.
It takes a second for him to recover, sucking in a breath before facing the group of women again.
They all watch him with an amused look.
âIâm assuming you all have a safe ride home?â He asks cautiously.
Kim nods âAdam will be here soon and Kelly will be taking these two troublemakers homeâ she says, pointing between the other two.
âDamn, good luck to Kellyâ Jay mutters, earning an offended âHey!â from Stella and Violet.
Jay laughs, glancing back to the bar where Y/n is handing the bartender the receipt before spinning around.
He notices her wobble a little and within a second heâs in front of her, a hand on each arm to stabilize her.
âWoah, you okay?â He asks, concern in his eyes but a hint of amusement in his voice.
âI am great, now that youâre hereâ Y/n winks at him, making his eyes widen.
âAlright, yeah, youâre drunk, come on letâs get you homeâ
ââ
When Jay parks outside of the apartment complex, Y/n starts to giggle, shaking her head at Jay.
To which Jay is clearly confused.
âWhatâs so funny?â He asks with an amused tone in his voice, curiousity evident in his facial expressions.
âThis is not where I live detectiveâ She says pointedly, squinting her eyes at him.
âNo, itâs where I live. And I donât feel comfortable leaving you alone in your stateâ Jay says, still chuckling at her antics.
Y/n suddenly straightens up, lazily saluting Jay âYes sirâ she jokes as Jay shakes his head, getting out of the truck.
Y/n sits in the passenger seat, looking around the truck. She had been in his truck more than she could count but it was like a whole new world while drunk.
The passenger door pops open, Jay standing there with an amused look on his face as he reaches his hand out to her.
âWell arenât you a gentleman, tell me do you treat all your lady friends like this, detective?â Y/n asks curiously, slightly swaying as she hops out of the truck.
Jay is there to catch her instantly, his arm wrapping around her again as he shuts the truck door and locks it.
âNope, just youâ Jay responds as he guides her to the apartment building.
Y/n hums, nodding but not saying anything else.
ââ
Y/n emerges from the bathroom dressed in a shirt that smells like Jay and a pair of sweatpants that are definitely not her size.
She's still buzzed, things are still a little hazy.
Jay sits on the bed, waiting to make sure she has everything she needs before he makes his way to the couch.
"Better?" Jay asks, referring to the change from her clothes to the more comfortable ones she wears now.
Y/n nods "Much, thank you detective" She says, a mischevious grin on her face as she joins him on the bed.
"Jay" she says softly, making Jay look at her curiously. "Could you maybe stay with me?" Y/n asks, her eyes averting to her hands.
"Yeah, of course. I'll take the floor" Jay gives her small smile, patting her knee before standing up from the bed and heading towards the living room to collect the pillow and blanket he had taken to the couch.
"I meant in the bed" Y/n says quietly, stopping Jay in his tracks.
He knew it could be crossing a line, she was under the influence and she probably wouldn't have asked otherwise but he could never say no to her.
Besides he would never take advantage of her. It was just sleeping in the same bed.
Jay turns, looking at her to make sure shes serious.
Y/n stares at her hands, not sure if Jay will think it was weird or not.
âOkay, let me just grab the pillow and blanket off the couchâ Jay says simply before going to the living room.
When he returns to the bedroom, Y/n is under the covers now, the comforter pulled up to her chin and she has a smile on her face seeming very content.
âComfy?â Jay asks, making his way over to the bed.
âAlmostâ Y/n answers pulling the covers back and patting the bed.
Jay chuckles âYou are going to be the death of meâ he mumbles, sliding into the bed next to her and turning the lamp off beside the bed.
âNow why would you say such a mean thing" Y/n frowns, not fully understanding in her hazy state.
Jay hums as she lays her head on his chest, wrapping an around his torso "Gee, I wonder" he mumbles sarcastically.
"Goodnight Jason Halstead" Y/n mumbles, sleep already overtaking her.
"Goodnight" Jay's unable to help the laugh that comes with it.

The first time it happened, it was a grip on her wrist that was a little too hard. He said he didn't mean it, he was sorry.
"I love you so much, I just get a little upset"
Brandon knew how to sweet talk her.
Y/n and Brandon met when he had just started the academy and Y/n was starting school to be a radiologist. It was love at first sight. They were meant to be. Everyone that knew them said that.
They were the perfect couple and everyone loved them together.
The second time was a hard shove that sent Y/n falling into the coffee table.
The bruises and sore muscles the next day from the fall were hard to ignore but Brandon knew how to make her forget.
Flowers, cards, a romantic dinner. Multiple apologies.
The third time was Brandon screaming in her face, making her scared enough to fall down and then the kicking started.
The pain Y/n felt the next morning as she walked into work was enough to detour her day.
She looked around the ED, she knew she could go to Will. Her closest friend. But he would see right through her so she went for the next best option.
"Hey Hannah, got a sec?" Y/n asked, approaching the blonde doctor.
Y/N and Hannah were friendly, they had drinks at Molly's together--back when Y/n would show up. They aren't too close for Hannah to ask questions.
Hannah smiles, leaning against the nurses station "Yeah what's up? Everything okay?" she asks curiously.
Y/n shrugs, adjusting the tote bag on her shoulder "I was kinda clumsy and drunk last night, took a tumble I might have a cracked rib or two" She says it lightheartedly to make it more believable.
The blonde chuckles, nodding "Come on, let's take a look"
--
Will Halstead was observant. Y/n had stopped coming out to Molly's about 6 months ago. Always said she was too tired.
Then Y/n started slowly not answering his texts. Only talking to him at work.
He wasn't sure what he did to cause the distance.
The two had been inseparable since Y/n started. Will always saw her as a little sister and cared for her like one. Always checking in on her, making sure she was eating and drinking properly and Y/n did the same for him especially on those long shifts.
Y/n was the one (outside of Jay) that Will went to about everything s and when he needed to rant and usually it was always vice versa.
Until lately.
Will watched Y/n walk over to the nurses station, handing over a report to another doctor.
That's when he noticed her face, the slight bruising and cuts on her cheek raising red flags.
"Hey, what the hell happened to your face?" The red head questions, the concern written all over his face.
"Gee, Will, way to make a girl feel good about herself" Y/n says sarcastically.
Will shakes his head, looking at her in disbelief "Y/n. Seriously, what happened?"
Y/n rolls her eyes at him "I took a little tumble. Will, seriously, I'm fine" She says, a little laugh coming out.
"Dr. Halstead! Incoming!" Maggie calls from the entrance of the ED.
Will groans pointing at Y/n "This isn't over" He says seriously before grabbing gloves and running off.
Y/n lets out a sigh of relief. Thank you Maggie!
---
Relief. Joy. Warmth.
Those three words used to describe how Y/n felt when she walked into the apartment shared with her boyfriend of 6 years.
Dread. Sadness. Guilt.
Those three describe the feeling she got when she entered the apartment now.
She can feel the hostility as she hears him stomping around.
Brandon emerged from the bedroom, duffel bag in hand. Badge and gun on his hip.
"Finally home huh? What took you so long? Hanging out with your work boyfriend?" Brandon questions, his tone is hard to place but the feeling in her gut makes Y/n feel uneasy.
"I told you he's just a frie-"
Brandon cuts her off, his hand around her throat, slamming the girl back into the wall.
"He's just a friend my ass. Think you can step out on me? Do you forget who I am?" His other hand is on his gun as he stares at her with rage.
"I think you know better than to lie to me" The dark chuckle is followed by a hard punch, right to her left cheek.
Brandon lets her go, stepping back and walking to the front door, picking up his duffel bag and his keys.
"I'll be undercover for a few days--You better have this place spotless when I get back."
--
It took three hours for Y/n to gather her strength, to move from her spot on the floor where Brandon had left her.
She was cried out, her throat was sore, her eye was already swelling up and she could feel blood running down her cheek.
As if she snapped out of her dazed state, Y/n stood up, still shaky. Going to the bedroom she shared with him.
Quickly grabbing the duffel bag out from under the bed she hastily starts throwing clothes into the bag.
Not all of them, just enough to not have to come back for a few days.
She knew she should probably call before just showing up but there was no way she was up for explaining things over the phone.
Glancing back at the apartment one last time she shut the door behind her, making her way downstairs.
---
Y/n stood outside of the familiar apartment. Hesitating.
She could just walk away. She could not tell anyone. That seems easier.
But the feeling in her gut. Her mind flashing back to Brandon's hand on his gun while he choked her.
She couldn't go back.
Hesitantly, she brings up a shaky hand, making a loose fist and knocking on the door.
It takes a second before she hears shuffling. Then the lock unlocking.
The pit in her stomach grows.
"Hey! What are you doing he--Holy shit" Will is stopped dead in his tracks when he sees the swollen eye, the blood on her cheek and the bruises on her neck in the shape of fingers.
"C-can I stay here--just for the night" Y/n stutters out lowly.
"Are you kidding me? You don't even have to ask" Will is quick to take her bag from her, ushering her inside the apartment.
"What happened? Who did this to you? Was it Brandon?" Will questions as he rushes to the kitchen for an ice pack.
"Yeah" It's more of a whisper as Y/n looks down at her shoes.
"Let's get some ice on your eye--Here, sit, sit" Will guides her to the couch, sitting next to her and handing her the ice pack.
"Have you talked to anyone? Did you call the police or-"
"I can't, I can't call the police, Will, he's a detective. I can't..." Y/n trails off, her words are panicked.
Will shakes his head leaning forward "Listen to me. You have to report this--h-how long has this been going on?" he asks frantically.
Y/n hesitates, glancing at Will with her uncovered eye. Debating if she should tell him the truth.
"Six months" Y/n says softly, avoiding eye contact.
Will is speechless for a moment. His brain racking through everything he's seen the past six months. How withdrawn she's been, the small winces when he startled her. Why didn't he question it?
"Listen, my brother, he's a detective with Intelligence. You can trust Jay, his whole unit. I promise. Please let me call him, just him" Will tries to convince her.
Y/n sighs, nodding slowly "Only him. I'll talk to your brother"
--
It was nearing 10 pm when a knock at the door makes Y/n Jump.
Will squeezes her shoulder, giving her sad smile "It's just Jay, I'm going to let him in okay?"
It might seem silly to ask if it's okay to let someone into your own home.
But Will was going to make sure she was comfortable with it first. He could see the fear in her eyes and her hands still had a slight tremble to them.
Y/n gives a slight nod, she feels like a bundle of nerves as Will stands up and approaches the door.
What if Jay knew Brandon? What if they were friends and he told Brandon?
It's Will's brother. You can trust him. She had to tell herself that as she heard footsteps coming to the living room.
"Y/n, this is Jay" Will says softly, entering the living room with a brunette man who Y/n would definitely say is attractive under any other circumstance.
"Hi" Jay says softly "I'm sorry we're meeting under these circumstances, I've heard a lot about you"
Y/n glances at him and then back to Will, feeling uneasy.
"From me" Will reassures her, he can sense that question rolling around in her head.
Y/n nods.
Jay's a little confused why he would hear about her from anyone else but he left it.
Jay pulls a chair from the dining table, setting it across from Y/n and sitting down while Will takes a seat next to her again.
"So Will didn't say much on the phone. Your boyfriend did this?" Jay asks, his voice soft, taking out his notepad and pen.
Y/n lets out a puff of air "Yeah-yes-um he did"
Jay nods "What is his name?" he asks, writing something down in his notepad.
"Brandon Wiley, he's a detective in narcotics in the 23rd district" Y/n glances at Jay nervously, noticing how he stops writing for a second and then continues.
"Can you walk me through what happened tonight?" Jay's stomach is turning, the thought of a cop doing this to an innocent woman.
It's definitely hitting hard for him.
"I-i came home from work around 6, he was in our bedroom packing a bag to go undercover. I didn't even set my things down, He started asking why I was home late, accusing me of being with my work boyfriend--It's what he calls Will"
Y/n pasues, rubbing her hands together nervously, reaching up to run her fingers over the brusies on her neck lightly.
It feels like she has a thousand eyes on her, like the two men are judging her but she knows Will would never. and Will wouldn't call Jay if he didn't trust him.
"He wrapped a hand around my throat, slammed me into the wall. He was screaming in my face saying not to cheat on him and to remember who he was a-and his hand was on his gun...and then he gave me this" Y/n gestures to her face, glancing between the Halstead brothers.
Will places a comforting hand on her knee. It's not romantic, just a friend comforting a friend. To let her know he's there.
Jay writes in his notepad, he can feel the weight of situation on his shoulders.
Something like this never sat right with him. A police officer who swore an oath to protect but instead he's inflicting the pain on someone innocent.
"Did he leave after that?" Jay asks, his voice is softer than normal, sensing how nervous the young woman is.
Y/n nods, "Yeah, it took me a while to get myself together after that I just kind of sat on the floor in shock. Once I snapped out of it I packed some of my things and came here" she sends a weary smile to Will.
Jay leans forward, closing his notepad and cautiously reaches out a hand, placing it on top of Y/n's shaky one that sits on her knee, catching her attention.
"I'm not sure what Will has told you but I work with intelligence. Just because this guy is a cop does not give him the right to hurt you and it certainly does not mean he will get away with this."
There's sincerity in Jay's voice, something in his eyes and his certainty that puts Y/n more at ease.
"Thank you" Y/n says softly--there's more to it, thank you for believing me. For listening.
She was terrified to go to any law enforcement about the abuse from a decorated detective but Jay made her feel silly for feeling that way. Not in a bad way but in a way that maybe if she had just talked to Will sooner, she could have gotten help sooner.
Jay gives her a sad smile, squeezing her hand.
"If it's okay with you, I need to take some pictures of your injuries and then the next step would be to come in to the district tomorrow morning so you can at least talk to my boss" Jay explains, taking his phone out.
Y/n looks at Will nervously and then back to Jay.
"You'll be there right?" She asks, feeling stupid and like a little kid. She knows Will can't come, he's working early in the morning.
Jay nods, a small smile on his face "I'll be with you the whole time".
--
The next morning Y/n woke up a little disoriented, her face and neck sore. The memories from the night before a blur.
She checked her phone, a few texts from some of her coworkers asking if she was okay after they heard she's taking a few days off.
Glancing at the bedside table, she noticed a bottle of Tylenol, a glass of water and a note.
"Take some Tylenol and drink water! Call me if you need anything, Jay should be picking you up around 9. - Will"
Y/n rolled her eyes at Will's overbearing nature but also smiled to herself. She was happy, not waking up wondering if he would be there.
She notices the time reads 8:45am.
"Shit" she mumbles, quickly getting out of the bed and making her way to the bathroom to get ready.
The first glance in the mirror was a shock, seeing her injuries for the first time since it happened. Her cheek and eye were a dark purple and blue. The fingerprints on her neck matching.
There was no way she could go to work like this. And mentally she thanked Will for calling her boss and letting them know she wouldn't be in the next few days due to a personal emergency.
She quickly and carefully washed her face, brushed her teeth and completed her morning routine-as best as she could-before getting dressed in whatever clothes she had grabbed from the apartment.
Thankfully she had grabbed an oversized hoodie that would cover her neck slightly in the way it sat on her frame. Slipping into a pair of jeans and a random pair of socks she felt a little more normal. The injuries forgotten for the moment.
A knock at the front door startled her for a second before she relaxed, realizing it must be Jay.
She quickly made her way to the front door, peaking through the peephole and then unlocking the door.
"HI, I'm ready I just need to get my phone and keys" Y/n said it quickly, a little too quickly, stepping to the side to let Jay in.
She was used to being rushed and then being screamed at when she wasn't quick enough.
Almost as quick as she said it she ran back to the guest room.
Jay frowned, watching her retreat quickly to grab the last of her things.
This guy really did a number on her.
That thought made his blood boil. From everything Will had told him about Y/n over the years, she was probably the sweetest and kindest person Will had ever met.
You have to be really messed up to hurt someone like that.
"Sorry that took so long" Y/n says as soon as she's back at the entryway, as if practiced.
"Hey" Jay says it softly, ducking down slightly to meet her eyes "You don't have to rush, you don't have to apologize. You're safe and he can't hurt you. Not with me around"
It took her a second to respond, not used to being talked to in such a kind way. But then something clicked in her brain. This is Jay. Will's brother. He's safe.
"I know, i'm sorry--shit--sorry it's out of habit" She finally meets his eyes, feeling secure.
Jay chuckles, shaking his head "Come on, you eat yet?" He asks, guiding her out of the apartment and locking the door behind him with the spare key Will gave him.
"Not yet"
"Breakfast first then, there's a diner down the street that has good food and decent coffee"
--
Y/n had been nervous when Jay suggested the diner, for one she looked horrible. and two, what if one of Brandon's cop buddies saw therm?
But then she realized she was with Jay and he wouldn't let anything happen to her.
So she let herself enjoy it and their time at the diner was full of Jay telling embarrassing stories about Will and laughter.
The ride to the district was easy, light, getting to know each other a little.
As Jay pulled his truck into the parking lot at the district he sensed her nerves.
He noticed her fidgeting with the seam on her hoodie, the way her leg bounced.
"Relax, breathe, you are safe. We're going through the back entrance, no one will see you but my unit. I'll be with you the whole time" Jay reassures her, flashing a smile at her.
Y/n nods, returning the smile, hers smaller but sincere. Her leg stills and she lets out a deep breath, smoothing her sweatshirt.
"Okay, yeah you're right, I'm being silly."
Jay shakes his head, reaching over and squeezing her hand.
"You are not being silly, you have every right to be nervous. You focus on yourself and I'll take care of the rest. Just breathe"
She takes a deep breath in through her nose, letting it out.
Jay takes the opportunity to get out of the driver side, making his way to her door and opening it for her.
"What a gentleman" Y/n says jokingly. But if she's honest, she's not used to a guy opening the door for her. Brandon would never do something that simple over the years they were together.
Jay chuckles as he shuts the door behind her, guiding her to the basement door.
Y/n notices the cage as soon as they enter the basement, glancing at Jay "I don't even want to know what that's for" she jokes, pointing at it.
"Don't worry you'll never be in it, I know someone that will be though" the last part is under his breath but Y/n hears it and she would be lying if she said that doesn't make her feel a little good.
Once upstairs, Y/n can feel all eyes on her as the four detectives at their desks watch them curiously.
None of them knew what was going on. The only one Jay looped in was Voight, explaining the situation late last night after he left his brother's apartment.
Voight was quick to tell Jay to bring her in. He had the same hatred for men like Brandon.
Jay knocks on the door to Voight's office, Y/n tries to relax but it's hard with all eyes on her. Jay senses it, sending her a small smile.
Which works, her heart rate relaxing slowly.
"Come in" a rough voice comes from the other side of the door.
Jay opens the door, letting Y/n in first before stepping in, shutting the door.
"Y/n this is my Sargent Hank Voight" Jay introduces, the older man standing from his desk.
"It's nice to meet you Y/n, Jay's explained the situation already. We're keeping this in house, meaning the only people that will be involved will be Jay, Myself, and the detectives sitting out there" Voight speaks softly, softer than normal trying to make her feel a little less nervous.
Y/n nods, giving Voight a small smile "Thank you, Sargent. I never thought anyone would believe me, I know it's tough with Brandon being a detec-"
The older man cuts her off, shaking his head "It doesn't matter who he is, he has no right to lay a hand on you. We're going to make sure he goes down for this" Hank reassures her, this time placing a hand on her arm softly.
"Would you be comfortable talking to the others to go over everything?" Jay asks softly from her right "No pressure"
Y/n contemplates it for a second before nodding "Yeah, as long as you're there"
That seems to be her answer for everything but as long as Jay is with her she feels safe.
"Okay, we'll talk in the conference room" Jay says, knowing it's a private area.
"You can take her to the conference room, I'll gather the team" Voight offers and Jay nods, opening the office door and guiding Y/n out.
The rest of the team watch them walk down the hall, curiosity eating away at them.
--
Meeting the rest of the intelligence went well, it was mostly Y/n recounting every thing that happened the past six months, which was when it really started to get bad with Brandon. When it got physical.
It started with little comments that were meant to bring her down, lower her self esteem. Then it built up to the physical stuff.
The rest of the unit either looked sorry for her or angry as she recounted everything, Jay by her side as she did so. Trying to give her some comfort.
The team all noticed that. The way she would tense up, Jay would place a hand on hers and she would relax.
You would think they knew each other for years.
The team had made a plan, Brandon was undercover currently and was supposed to be finished in two days. Voight was impatient, once they had things ready they were planning to pick him up. The photos of her injuries were evidence and they even found a girlfriend from the past, before Brandon got with Y/n.
It was in high school, he broke her jaw and cracked three of her ribs. It had been expunged form his record since he was technically a minor.
"That poor girl" Y/n said softly, feeling sadness as she sat in the chair next to Jay's desk, glancing at the girl that Haley and Adam were talking to in the small break room.
Jay only glanced at her, it was amazing how she felt so bad for the other girl, not even caring about her own injuries.
Brandon could have easily killed her that night and from what Jay had heard he almost did. Or at least probably thought about it.
Finishing up their interview, Haley guided the woman back down the stairs, the woman sending Y/n a sympathetic look.
"How are you doing?" Adam asks softly as he approaches Jay's desk and glancing at Y/n.
She shrugs "I don't know, I just feel bad for her going through that" she says quietly.
Adam smiles at her sadly before sitting at his desk.
Jay stands from his desk, picking up his keys and phone "Come on, I'll take you back to Will's. You should be resting" He doesn't say it as a question but not as an order either.
Y/n stands up, looking at Jay "I'm not broken" she says, hands on her hips.
Jay gives her a 'really' look "Will told me you were stubborn. There's nothing to do right now except let us work and arrest him. So, I am taking you home to rest and put some ice on your eye, okay?" He says it nicely, not in a mean way but in a concerned way.
Damn you Will Halstead
"William needs to mind his business" Y/n says under her breath as Jay guides through the hallway and downstairs to the basement.
"Couldn't agree more" Jay jokes, a smirk on his face and Y/n laughs quietly.
Once they get to the truck, Jay opens he passenger side door for her. Waiting for her to climb in the truck before shutting the door and starting the truck.
As Jay pulls out of the parking lot, Y/n has a thought swirling around in her mind.
"Jay" her voice has a different tone. scared. It makes Jay look over at her quickly.
"What if he finds me" it's quiet, whispered as if she says it too loud Brandon will just pop up.
"Then I'll be there. Hand me your phone" Jay's voice is calm, unwavering as he puts his hand out.
Y/n furrows her eyebrows, taking her phone out of her pants pocket and unlocking it, putting it in Jay's hand.
Keeping his eyes on the road, he taps the screen a few times, typing something in and then handing it back to her.
"You speed dial 1 and it will call me. Anything happens you call and I'll be there" It's a promise. A promise to show up. That's more than anyone has ever given her.
--
Y/n is sat on the couch in Will's living room, watching a movie and icing her eye.
Jay made sure she had everything she needed before leaving.
"Lock the door and lock the deadbolt after me" Jay had said and Y/n sent him a fake salute before he left the apartment, an amused look on his face.
It was only one more hour until Will was off shift and then maybe her uneasiness of being here alone with him out there would be gone.
That's when there's a loud knock on the apartment door.
Y/n's eyebrows furrow. Who could that be?
Then there's banging "Y/n, I know you're here"
Her blood ran cold.
No way.
This is not happening.
What a damn coincidence.
He wasn't supposed to be out of his assignment for two days.
Two more loud thumps.
"Come on, honey open the door" Brandon tries to sound nice, but Y/n knows better.
Her breathing is quickened as the door knob jiggles.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
Grabbing her phone and moving as quietly as possible she goes the guest room, shutting and locking the door and then going to the bathroom and shutting and locking that door.
She can hear him banging on the door more and yelling.
Okay maybe it's time to call for help.
Unlocking her phone with shaky hands, she opens the call app, pressing the 1.
She can hear the ringing and Jay answers on the second ring.
"He's here" That's all she can get out.
That's all she needs to say before Jay is moving from his desk. Placing his gun in the holster on his hip and grabbing his keys.
"Where are you right now?" he asks, staying calm.
He covers the phone, speaking to the team "We gotta go, he found her"
They're all on their feet in a matter of seconds and making their way downstairs--Kim telling Voight.
"I-in the bathroom" Y/n responds before there's a loud noise heard through the phone "Shit, I think he just broke the door"
Jay's got his truck started in a matter of seconds, Haley in the passenger seat as he speeds out of the parking lot, the phone on speaker now.
"Y/n don't hang up, just stay where you are. I'm on my way, we're coming." Jay tries to reassure her but he can barely stay clam himself as he hears more loud banging and yelling on the other end.
"Come on! I just want to talk! I don't know why you do this to me" Brandon's voice is muffled but Jay hear it and he exchanges worried glances with Haley.
Another loud bang.
"There you are, I know you talked to the cops you bitch"
On the other end, Brandon grabs her by her hair, landing a punch to her left abdomen.
Y/n groans doubling over as he pulls her up.
"They'll never believe you, a detectives words against you? It will never work." He has a sickeningly evil smirk on his face as he throws her to the ground.
Brandon draws his gun, aiming it at Y/n's curled up body on the bathroom floor.
"Chicago PD!" Y/n hears Haley yell and the relief washes over her.
"Put it down, Brandon!" Jay yells, gun pointed at the man.
"I'm on the job guys" He says as if that makes everything okay.
Voight steps up, coming behind him and pressing his gun to the back of Brandon's head.
"Put it down" His voice is gruff and Y/n can see the look in his eye, Brandon finally realizing they are not on his side.
He drops the gun, Hank grabbing him and slamming him against the wall as Haley kicks the gun away.
Jay moves on instinct not even giving it a second thought, grabbing Brandon by the collar and shoving him against the wall again.
"Guess what, I believe her" Jay's voice is darker than usual as he forcefully turns Brandon, shoving his face into the wall as he handcuffs him, making sure the cuffs are extra tight.
Adam takes Brandon from Jay "You realize what's going to happen to you? Sure they hate cops where you're going but you know what they hate more? Guys who beat women" it's not a threat or a suggestion. It's a promise.
Once Brandon's out of his sight, Jay relaxes, finding Y/n sat against the tub, Kim checking on her while Haley goes to direct the paramedics.
Jay kneels down next to her "I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner" he says it as if he's the only one responsible. As if they didn't save her.
"You showed up. That's all I needed" this time Y/n squeezes his hand comfortingly.
The paramedics finally enter the bathroom, taking Y/n's vitals and listening to her breathing. Of course she refuses to go to the hospital. Knowing they wouldn't be able to do much for her cracked ribs anyway.
The team has cleared out mostly, lingering in the rest of the apartment, Kevin and Kim speaking to the neighbors and getting statements.
Will comes running into the apartment, seeing the front door broken like it was kicked in.
He sees the team and he's terrified.
"Guys? Is Y/n-"
Adam stops him "She's okay, Brandon showed up, she's got a couple cracked ribs. Jay's with her and the paramedics are checking her out" he explains, pointing to the guest room.
Will lets out a sigh of relief "Thanks" he says before making his way to the guest room.
He finds Y/n now sat on the bed, Jay sat next to her and the paramedics packing up.
"Will, i am so sorry about the doors I will absolutely pay for them to get fixed" Y/n says immediately seeing her ginger best friend.
Will looks at her with wide eyes, his mouth opens and shuts before he finds his words "You think that's what I'm worried about?!" he questions in disbelief.
"Yes?" She says as a question and Jay does his best to stifle his laughter.
"Y/n I could care less about the doors" the red head sighs, looking at his brother "Thank you for being here"
"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else" Jay says, looking at Y/n with a small smile.
Will knows that look in his brother's eyes but he doesn't say anything.
"I'm getting my kit to check you out."
"Will, the paramedics literally cleared me"
"And I literally don't care, stop being stubborn" Will says sassily, leaving the room.
Y/n groans, but instantly regrets it, her hand going to her side as she coughs.
"Alright, easy there, sassy" Jay says, an amused tone in his voice as he places a hand on her back comfortingly.
Will returns to the room with his med kit, glancing between his brother and friend knowingly.

So happy Jay is coming back for the crossover but that is also so cruel! I am just now accepting the fact he's not there and now THIS gets dropped into our laps?? They know what they are doing
Panic pt 2
Description: Y/n doesn't do well in big crowds and Jay helps out
Pairings: Jay x Reader
Warnings: Mentions of panic, mentions of lard crowds
This is Part 2 to this
The unit ended up getting stuck at work with the shooting. It ended up being much more complicated than they expected and by the time they have it solved and the shooter in custody it's already 10pm.
It's nothing new, honestly it happens more than it doesn't. But today just felt like it dragged on for days to Y/n after that confession.
She was trying to focus. and did she feel selfish for focusing on her feelings and overthinking things instead of fully focusing on the case and the victim.
Thankfully the victim is stable and talking--having gotten shot in the leg but not hitting any major artery.
It was still traumatizing for them of course.
As the team started to pack up for the night, Y/n's nerves got worse as she remembered Jay drove her here. She would have to be in the truck alone with him.
And normally this wouldn't be a problem. Normally she would be excited for that time in the truck alone eith him. But as she gets more in her head that was not the case.
Jay was feeling just about the same amount of nerves--maybe more.
Wondering if Y/n feels the same? Did he just completely ruin everything just by the little slip out?
What the hell was he thinking? He wasn't, that's for damn sure. He's dying from the anticipation, the anxiety of what she would say when they got alone in the truck finally--no case to handle.
The door to Voight's office opens as Jay pulls his coat on, Y/n submitting the last of her report.
"Jay, got a minute?" Voight asks, more as a statement than a question.
Jay glances at Y/n, knowing it might take more than a minute.
Y/n shoots him a small smile as she stands from her desk "Go ahead, I'll catch a ride with Haley" she offers--trying to take the burden off of him, letting him focus on whatever it is Voight needs.
Jay is disappointed, he wanted that conversation to happen. But he hides that disappointment.
"Text me when you're home?" He asks, almost pleads.
After the day they've had--she's had, he can't help but worry.
"Always" Y/n promises before Jay makes his way to Voight's office.
Haley had already heard the conversation, standing by the top of the stairs with her keys in hand.
"Ready to go?"
--
It's 10:40 pm when Jay is walking out of the district.
It wasn't a bad meeting with Voight--actually a good one, a heartfelt one that Jay was not expecting.
And Voight expressing he wants to have Jay handle more things as his second and to be in charge--knowing Jay wants his own unit one day.
He checks his phone, finding a couple texts from Will, one from Kelly--nothing from Y/n.
She had to have been home by now. And she never forgets to text.
The drive home is filled with worry but he knows he's probably overreacting.
Is he? Fuck it.
Jay makes the quickest, last minute turn that leads him towards not his apartment building but instead the one she lives in.
He barely shuts the truck off, brain on auto pilot as he makes his way into the building, up the three flights of stairs and to the door at the end of the hall.
The first knock is soft.
He waits for a minute before knowing firmer.
Nothing.
Now he's worried.
Another frantic knock and no response.
Jay frowns, pulling his phone out of his coat pocket as he calls Y/n.
Straight to voicemail.
Either her phone is off because somethings wrong or it died.
His brain is already set to the first and worst option.
His thumb scrolls through his contacts, clicking on Haley's name.
Haley answers on the third ring.
"Upton" She responds absentminedly.
"Hey, you gave Y/n a ride home right?" Jay is trying to keep his voice steady.
"Yeah, but-" Haley pauses, probably confused "but she wanted me to drop her off at your apartment"
---
Jay is beyond confused and he's shaky, the fear he had felt when he thought something happened already taking a toll on his body.
He races up the steps to his apartment, the anticipation is killing him now.
When he comes around the corner, he's both relieved and still confused.
Y/n is sat on floor against Jay's apartment door, her stomach churning. Her phone had died right after Haley dropped her off, she had no idea when Jay would be home.
Maybe this was a bad idea?
"Y/n? W-wha-" Jay starts to question as he walks down the hall towards her.
"I'm sorry, I know it's late but I couldn't just go home and I couldn't not talk to you after today. I have literally heard your voice replaying in my head all day, I don't know if you meant it in that way, if you meant you love me in a you're my best friend way or if you're in love with me. But I love you Jay Halstead. I have been in love with you but I never thought you would feel the same. If you don't that's okay but I just had to tell you." Y/n finishes, trying to catch her breath from that long run on but she had to get it out.
She's standing now, waiting for Jay to say anything.
"Okay, Jay, you have to say something because I am not about to have two panic atta-"
Jay cuts her off, closing the gap between them and kissing her. The second their lips touch it's like the movies and the books. The sparks, the jolt of electricity.
But it's also like time stands still and everything is calm.
When they pull away, Jay rests his forehead against hers "I love you too. I am so in love with you it physically hurts me when you're not okay. and that's why I care so much" Jay finally, fully admits.
It feels like a weight lifted off of both their shoulders. The confession finally coming out, And the pressure in Y/n's chest has finally lifted and she can breathe again.
"No more panic attacks. Okay? I got you, always" Jay reassures her with a small smile, stepping back only a little.
Y/n nods, the same smile on her face "Yeah, no more panic attacks sounds good to me" she lets out a small laugh.
"Want to come inside?"
---
After that, the panic attacks were rare. Not gone altogether but rare.
And Jay stuck to his word. He has her and always will.
"You okay, honey?" Jay asks, one hand on the wheel and the other reaching over the center console to place his hand on Y/n's thigh, rubbing soft circles with his thumb.
"Hmm?" Y/n hums back, her eyes glued to the world outside the truck.
"You okay? You've been unnaturally quiet all morning" Jay's voice is laced with concern as he glances from the road back to her.
Y/n sighs, finally averting her eyes to Jay "Yeah, I'm okay--Just thinking about Voight's reaction I guess" she answers truthfully, her hand resting on the small bump covered by her sweater.
"I know, and I know you're dreading desk duty but you're starting to show and it's the safest option for both of you" Jay reminds her, trying to put her mind at ease.
Y/n nods, the pressure is easing up. Jay always eased that pressure in her chest when it started.
Y/n and Jay had been together for a little over a year now and she's four months along in her pregnancy.
It came to a shock to them, they never planned it. It just happened. But they both wanted to have a kid or kids together--there were no doubts what to do. No panic. Just happiness.
Now it's time to tell Voight and the rest of their unit.
"I know and I'm okay with it. I can handle anything with you."

Panic
Description: Y/n doesn't do well in big crowds and Jay helps out

This was inspired by an idea submitted by @snipps08 . Let me know if I shoulder write a part 2! Sorry this was so short!
(Jay and Reader aren't in an established relationship but they are super close and have the tendencies to act like a couple)
Part 2 here!
Y/n was never a fan of large crowds, she never really had a reason. Ever since she could remember she felt that weird shaky feeling when she was in a large crowd and it only got worse as she grew up, the quick, rapid breathing. The clamminess of her hands. Nausea when she knew she was going to be in large crowd.
And of course she chose to be a cop, what could go wrong?
Over the years in the intelligence unit, she was slowly making progress with her anxiety.
Something about the crowd this time shook her, hard.
The day started off fairly calm, Y/n woke up with an exaggerated groan as her alarm sounds from her phone.
She lays there for a second. She feels weird already. Like she has this pressure on her chest. It's not heavy, it's not light, it's just there, weighing on her.
A knock at her apartment door startles her out of her half asleep state.
Her eyebrows furrow as she gets swings her legs over the side of the bed, heading for the door.
Peeking through the peephole, her confusion grows.
Was she that late? Her alarm just went off? She must have sat there for a little too long in her dazed state.
Jay shot her his signature smile but the worry was in his eyes, his hands stuffed in his coat pocket.
"You're not even dressed yet sleepyhead" He comments, entering the apartment as she steps aside.
It was a regular situation, Jay picking her up most days. It happened a few times years ago and it just became a regular habit.
âSorry, my alarm justâŠ.went offâŠâ Y/n says still confused as how she lost track of so much time âgive me five minutesâ she holds up her hand, signaling five before rushing back to her bedroom.
Jay had an amused smirk on his face, letting out a little chuckle as he sits on the armrest of the small grey couch.
Y/n emerges from the bedroom a few minutes later, fully dressed in jeans, a sweater, and boots. Badge and gun on her hip.
âReady?â Jay asks, standing up and making his way towards the door, holding it open for her.
âLetâs do itâ
ââ
A quick perp walk. That's all it was going to be.
A congressman's son killed one of his friends in a very violent way that was clearly planned and the chief and DA wanted an example made out of him.
The crowd of reporters and angry people is swarming around Jay, Y/n, Voight, and Adam as they get the teenager into the car.
And that's when it hit her, just as they got him into the car.
Y/n could slowly feel her heart beating quicker and quicker. She felt hot and she felt like that weight in her chest was slowly getting heavier.
Jay noticed, he always notices when somethings wrong. How could he not?
He did his best to try to get her back inside quickly when one of the reporters got too close, accidentally pushing into her.
Normally it would do nothing to her, she would bounce back.
This time was different for some reason.
Her brain is swarming and very unexpectedly, before she can even think about what her body is doing, she reaches for Jay, her hand holding onto his sleeve tightly.
It felt silly, like she's a little kid but in that moment Jay is her lifeline.
Jay feels something touch her sleeve, glancing down he sees her hand and that's when he gets the clear look at her.
She's pale, too pale. Her breathing is quick, so quick you can see it.
Jay wastes no time, reaching for her hand and holding it, pushing through the crowd and getting inside the district. Once they're inside Jay makes a b-line to the locker room, needing to get her into a more private area.
Once they're in the locker room, she lets go, sitting on the bench up against the wall, feeling the lightheadedness hit her from not being able to breathe.
That's when Jay notices how bad she's shaking.
"Hey, hey, hey" He tries to grab her attention, quickly making his way across the room to her and sitting next to her on the bench "You're okay. You're safe. You're here with me. I got you".
"I-I c-can't, I c-can't-"
"Okay" Jay says quietly, moving from next to her and kneeling down in front of her. Jay takes her hand, placing it over where his heart beats.
And it works. It grounds her. Y/n's breathing starts coming to a slow. The shaking in her hands is letting up.
"There you go, focus on my breathing. Focus on that feeling" Jay talks her through it, grounding her.
"I-I'm sorry" Y/n breathes out, tears welling up in her eyes, from both embarrassment but also the stress of the situation.
A sad smile makes it's way on Jay's faces, shaking his head as he reaches up to wipe the tears away. "You have nothing to be sorry about. You scared the hell out of me though, wanna tell me what that was about?" he asks as he makes his way back to sitting next to her, her hand now resting in his.
Neither of them seem to notice how close they are, the fact they are still holding hands doesn't even click in their brains. But if it didn't they probably wouldn't care.
It was terrifying for him. Seeing her like that and feeling like he didn't know how to help.
Y/n sighs, looking down at her lap, glancing at his hand holding hers.
"I used to get panic attacks when I was younger, usually in crowds--it hasn't happened in a long time. I felt weird this morning, anxious, but I just thought it was just a fluke thing..." Y/n trails off, cursing herself for not being more prepared.
She's a detective, she's not supposed to feel weak. Not supposed to have anxiety.
"And that's why you were late getting ready this morning" Jay states it as a fact, piecing it together.
Y/n nods, glancing at him "I know it's stupid" she mumbles, expecting to be ridiculed like she's always had been.
But this is Jay we're talking about. The same Jay that brings her soup when she's sick. The Jay that would take a bullet for her.
"It's not stupid. If it affects you, it's not stupid. And tell me next time, if you like that again, tell me even if you think it's dumb. I can't help you if I don't know what's going on"
"Jay it's not your job to help me" Y/n mumbles softly.
"It's not my job. But I want to do because I love you" It's the first time he admits it. It slips out. He didn't mean to just say it like that, he doesn't even know if she feels the same. But it slips out.
Y/n swears her eyes just popped out of her head. She has to be in a fantasy world.
and before she can respond, a knock on the doorframe interrupts them.
They both glance up, finding Voight in the doorway "Hey, you okay kid?" he asks Y/n, glancing at Jay.
Y/n nods, wiping her hands on her jeans "All good, sorry sarge, just didn't feel good but all good" Y/n shoots the older man a smile, standing up from the bench, Jay following.
"Good, we got a shooting downtown"
How can she go back to work after that?

Description: Jay's wife is very stubborn and hides getting injured until it's too late.

Warnings: Mentions of gunshots, mentions of blood, mentions of hospitals
This idea was submitted by @snipps08 thank you!!!
(Some of the lingo might not be exact as I have a terrible memory and can't exactly remember what they usually say so bare with me)
Y/n was on her way to talk to a witness for the upcoming trial date when a call came over the radio "All units, reports of shots fired at 51 Walbash Street, paramedics requesting police assistance".
Y/n frowned, hearing a couple of patrol officers responding, she thought for a second, making a U-turn at the soonest possible chance.
"5021 Charlie, I'm two blocks out, hold me down as responding. Let uniforms know plain clothes on scene" Y/n spoke into the radio, flicking on the lights and sirens as she pressed the gas.
Her vest is in the passenger seat, reaching over she throws it over her head as she drives with her left hand, strapping the vest in process.
"Y/n, I'm 4 minutes away, on my way" Adam's voice comes over her radio used for intelligence.
The car comes to a halt, saying a quick "copy" into her radio to let Adam know she heard him, Y/n scans the scene.
Two uniforms are parked behind the ambulance, a little ahead from where she is. Violet and Novak from firehouse 51 are crouched behind a car across the street, obviously trying to treat a man on the ground.
The shots are coming from an apartment building in front of where Y/n parked. The uniforms are returning fire.
Y/n gets out of her car, staying low as she crouches next to her car.
"Violet! Novak! You okay?" Y/n calls out to her friends.
"Yeah, I have him stable but this guy isn't going to make it if we don't get him to med soon!" Violet shouts back.
Y/n thinks for a moment, trying to figure out how to get the victim out of there safely until they can get the shooter.
"Hey, Wilson! I'll cover you, back your car up and get him into your patrol car and get him to med" Y/n instructs the officer closest to her.
The officer nods, Y/n stands returning fire to the shooter.
It's a few seconds later as she hears more sirens pulling up to the scene when she feels a sharp pain in her side. It's not something she even lets phase her as she hears the patrol car take off, the victim inside.
The shooting stops, probably realized their target was gone.
"Y/n! What's going on?" Adam asks as he comes to her side.
Y/n glances to him, nodding to the building as she crouches behind the car for a second.
"Shooter is in that building, third floor, probably a gang thing-- He stopped shooting once the victim was gone." Y/n explains, to Adam as she glances to Violet and Novak across their street.
"Alright, ready to move?" Adam asks and Y/n nods "Let's go" he pats her shoulder, to which she flinches--the sensation shooting to her side but Adam doesn't notice as they move towards the building.
"5021 Charlie, we are in pursuit of the shooter. Entering the Wake Forest apartments" Y/n rattles off into her radio.
Making their way up the stairs to the third floor, the apartment that matches where the shots were coming from has the door wide open. Adam glances back to Y/n who sends him a nod as they make their way inside.
Adam goes straight as Y/n makes her way into the kitchen, clearing the apartment as she does.
Just as they are about to give up, there's a door slamming in the hallway and foot steps running.
Y/n and Adam take off towards the noise, finding a man in a dark green hoodie running down the stairs, gun in hand.
"Hey! Chicago PD!" Adam announces, running down the steps after him, Y/n right behind him.
"5021 Charlie, Suspect is in a dark green hoodie, he is coming out of the front doors" Y/n announces into her radio to alert the uniforms outside.
When they get outside, Adam and Y/n are thankful to see Kevin holding the man down on his stomach, the gun already kicked away.
Y/n feels relief when she sees the rest of the team there.
"You two okay?" Voight asks, walking up to Adam and Y/n, looking between the two.
"Yeah, all good, Sarge" Adam responds, nodding as he holsters his gun.
Voight glances to Y/n when she doesn't answer.
It's only then, as the adrenaline wears off does she feels the white hot pain in her side. The wetness soaking through her shirt and jacket.
"Y/n? You okay? You look a little pale" Voight has a very concerned tone in his voice.
Adam looks at his partner, really looks at her and he notices how pale she is too.
"My side hurts a little" Y/n says lowly, her hand going to her side. When she takes her hand away, the two men notice the blood soaking it.
At that moment, Jay looks up from his notepad where he was writing notes down from a witness.
He can sense something is wrong in his gut and when she sees Y/n she seems to be off balance and very pale. too pale. His feet are moving before he can even think.
She feels her vision going dark and her body swaying as she hears distant shouting and then it's all blank.
--
"Twenty-eight year old female, gunshot wound to the right abdomen. No exit wound. She's lost a lot of blood, she's stable for now, coded once en route" Violet calls out as the stretcher is wheeled into the ED of Chicago Medical Center.
"Maggie?!" Will calls as he approaches them, snapping a pair of gloves on. Dr. Archer following closely.
"Baghdad's open!" Maggie answers, following to help in.
Will stops as he comes close, seeing his sister in law on the stretcher, her top soaked in blood.
"Y/n?" His voice is quiet and Marcel is already jumping into his place, helping Archer and the nurses transfer them.
Jay is barreling through the ED doors, following after his wife. Will snaps out of it when he sees Maggie trying to keep him back.
"Jay, Jay let them work. They got her, man" Will tries to give his brother a little piece of mind, tho impossible.
"We need to get her in the OR now!"
--
Jay can feel his heart in his stomach as he paces the waiting room that's full of police officers from different units.
He can't think, he can't breathe, he can't function. The rest of the intelligence team is on edge, waiting to know if their friend will pull through.
Adam, Kevin, and Kim sit in the chairs, anxiously waiting.
Adam can't stop staring at the blood on his hands from when he caught Y/n.
Y/n had been his partner on and off for the past 10 years but she was more than that, she was Mack's aunt, his best friend and Kim felt like a sister to her.
Kevin adored her, he felt like Y/n was the only person he could fully open up to all the time, someone he could trust with his siblings and with his life--which Y/n had helped with his siblings more than once over the years.
Voight viewed her like a daughter and Y/n was probably the only one, besides Trudy that had been to his house to check in on him multiple times after the really tough cases.
Jay on the other hand-- Jay was losing his mind, Y/n had been the love of his life since the first day he saw her and he doesn't remember what life was like before that.
Will approaches his brother, pulling him into a much needed hug.
"She's got this, she'll be okay. She's stubborn as hell, we both know it" the red head says quietly, holding on to Jay as he lets out the sobs.
"I can't, I can't lose her Will. I don't know how to breathe without her--what am I gonna do?" It's a serious question, what is he going to do without her?
Will frowns, holding his brother at arms length, a hand on each shoulder.
"Hey, listen to me. She's got the best doctors in there working on her. Me and you both know she is hard headed as hell. Y/n will be okay" Will says sternly, looking his brother in the eyes.
Jay nods, wiping at his eyes. He knows Will's right.
--
It's five hours later when Jay finds himself sitting next to Y/n's hospital bed, his hand gripping hers like his life depended on it.
The only thing you can hear in the room is the sound of the steady beeping from the monitor and the tapping of his foot as his leg bounces.
"She's stable, we removed the bullet, It didn't hit anything major but she'll be sore and has some broken ribs but she should wake up soon" Archer had explained to Jay when they came out of surgery.
He knew that Archer was right but he wouldn't believe she was okay until he sees it for himself.
"J-ay" It comes out broken and raspy but it gets his attention, Jay's head shooting up.
Y/n slowly blinks at him, her head feels heavy.
Jay can feel the relief lifting off his shoulder.
"Hey, hey honey. I'm here" He says softly, the tears of relief and joy slip out as he stands up, never letting her hand go as he kisses her head.
He lingers for a second--not wanting to step away.
"Don't scare me like that again" Jay's voice is desperate and Y/n nods "I won't" she says softly.
There's a knock at the doorframe, both of them turning to see Will in the doorway.
"Well, well, well, look who's awake" The red head jokes as he approaches the other side of the bed "I know you are stubborn as hell and you are independent, but how about next time you let someone know if you're hurt" Will is half teasing but half serious.
Jay raises an eyebrow at his wife, waiting for an answer.
"I promise to let someone know next time, happy Halsteads?" Y/n jokes with a smirk.
"You're a Halstead too, baby" Jay tells her with a chuckle.
"Damn" Y/n mumbles, an amused tone in her voice.
"I'll go let everyone know you're awake" Will says before leaving the room.
Jay looks back at his wife, kissing her forehead again "Thank you for coming back to me".

I am having major writers block, I want to write something but i have no idea what so if anyone has a suggestion/idea let me know!
(Writing prompts/ideasânot doing personal requests! Thank you!!)
Grumpy girl
Description: Y/n is a grump and Jay is the only one able to make her smile.
Pairings: Jay x Grumpy!Reader
Warnings: none other than maybe cheesiness
Y/n is not a very outgoing or smiley/happy go lucky. She's also not mean. She's just grumpy.
The first meetings with the unit were interesting to say the least.
Voight had recruited Y/n to the Intelligence unit when he met her during a joint investigation with the gang unit. He was impressed by her and she was looking for a change.
So he brought her on.
"This is detective y/l/n, she's joining us from the gang unit. Y/n, you can have this desk and you'll be partnered with Halstead" Hank directed her to the empty desk across from Jay.
Kim was the first to talk to her.
"Hi, I'm Kim. It's nice to have you on the team" The brunette introduced herself sweetly.
"Nice to meet you, Kim" Y/n gave her a small smile, not one that met her eyes.
Adam and Kevin were next, Y/n gave them a small smile.
The three gave each other a look, a little weary.
Then Hailey and then Jay.
"Detective Jay Halstead, nice to meet you partner" Jay had a toothy grin, leaning over his desk.
A bigger smile, was on her face this time, still not to her eyes, but bigger.
"You too, partner"
--
The team had grown to realize she isn't mean, she's just grumpy.
But she has her moments.
Like when she watched Mack for Kim and Adam to have date night.
Or when she helped Vanessa with homework when Kevin brought her into the station briefly.
And when one of them was hurt. Like the time Kim was taken, she had been there to help Kim in little ways as she recovered. Ways that would be overlooked if you didn't know her.
She cared but she just didn't express it well.
Y/n enters the district, giving Trudy a small nod at the desk and heading upstairs to Intelligence, punching in her code a the gate.
She was the first one there, always seeming to get there earlier than the others.
As she entered the break room, thinking about making a pot of coffee as she didn't have time to stop and she was out at home--she remembered that the machine was broken.
With an annoyed sigh, she made her way to her desk, throwing her coat over the back of her chair as she logged into the computer and started finishing up some paperwork that had been waiting for attention on her desk.
The rest of team trickled in slowly, Y/n not even glancing up from her paperwork.
That is until a to-go cup was placed in front of her on her desk.
Grumpy Girl :) is writing on the side of the cup in Jay's handwriting.
Y/n looks up, seeing Jay already looking at his own paperwork.
"Thank you" She says quietly, a small smile on her face as she takes a sip of the coffee.
Jay knew for a fact Y/n could not start her day without coffee. It wasn't an option. He had seen it before and it was not good.
Y/n is grumpy. But no coffee in the morning? Not something he would ever want to see again.
"Still didn't buy coffee?" Jay inquires, a teasing tone in his voice.
He was probably the only one able to joke around with her on a regular basis.
"I forgot again" The young woman says plainly.
Jay chuckles, shaking his head at her.
It had been a week of Y/n mentioning how she needed to buy coffee and she still hadn't, forgetting everyday.
Voight walks out of his office before he can make another smart remark.
"We got a double homicide, let's go"
--
"So, how was your weekend?" Jay asks his partner curiously as they drive to the crime scene in his truck.
Y/n is sat in the passenger seat, fingers fidgeting with a loose thread on the bottom of her sweater. A habit Jay had picked up on over the years.
"Good" Y/n says simply, glancing at her partner "How was your weekend?" she retorts.
Jay glances at her, chuckling as an amused smile grows on his face "Good? That's all I get? What did you do?" he questions, ignoring her own.
"Well, Saturday I cleaned my apartment, Sunday I stayed in bed. Very eventful, satisified?" Y/n shoots him a very sarcastic smile.
The brunette man rolls his eyes, laughing at her attitude "You know, I got you coffee this morning--I should be getting less attitude today" he jokes.
Y/n sighs, knowing he's right and of all people, Jay was always the exception"You're right, I'm sorry, I'll be nicer today" She says like a defeated kid.
Jay is shocked, Y/n rarely apologizes. Especially for such a small thing.
"You never answered me, what did you do this weekend?" Y/n asks again, ignoring Jay's silence.
"Will came over Saturday and we watched the game, Sunday I did laundry" Jay explains his uneventful weekend.
Y/n snorts "The idea of you doing laundry kills me for some reason" she jokes.
"Shut up" Jay laughs, parking down the street from the house.
--
"Hey, Jay?" Y/n speaks up from her desk as she watches the camera footage from one of the cameras on the street the victims lived on.
Jay glances up, pausing the footage he's watching, giving her his full attention.
"Yes?" He asks curiously, leaning his elbows on the desk and leaning forward.
"Weird question- How come you're so friendly all the time?" It was a genuine question- not because she was depressed, she just found it exhausting to be so friendly all the time.
"When I have you by my side, I can do anything." Jay answers back seriously, going back to the footage he was watching.
Y/n can feel her cheeks heat up, what did he just say?
Jay notices her face getting a shade of pink, feeling amusement. It wasn't often he saw her flustered.
He wasn't joking either. He was dead serious, it was about four months into working together when he finally realized his feelings, feeling butterflies in his stomach whenever he saw her. Feeling a warm fuzzy feeling in his heart. He felt insanely happy whenever he got to see her in the morning--even if she was grumpy.
He found it endearing and soon he noticed the little things about her and started to surprise her randomly with little acts or things she had mentioned, just to see that small smile on her face.
Jay had probably seen her smile-- a real smile only a handful of times, four out of five times being because of him.
Before Y/n could say anything back, Kevin come back up the stairs.
"Hey guys, you got anything on the POD footage?" He asks the two as he slips off his jacket.
He notices something weird between them but not sure what it is.
"Nope, nothing, I'm gonna go get coffee" Y/n replies, standing up from her desk and taking her coat with her. Not waiting for a response from either men.
Kevin gives Jay a confused look "Something happen between you two?" he asks curiously.
Jay shakes his head, resting his chin in his hand, a smirk on his face "Nope" he says casually.
Kevin nods, not buying it "uh huh"
--
The team is packing up for the night, Voight having called it quits, telling everyone to get some sleep and come back with fresh eyes.
Except they were all frozen as they heard a laugh they had all probably heard a total of two times, maybe.
Jay was telling Y/n something that Will had done over the weekend, a silly mess up he had.
"I seriously worry for him and that big brain of his" Jay jokes as she slips his coat on.
Y/n laughs, a genuine laugh, a smile on her face that actually meets her eyes. Jay was the only person that brought that out of her.
"He's literally a doctor, Jay. Cut the man some slack" Y/n jokes, trying to stifle her laugh now and failing.
Jay could feel the butterflies, his heart swell at the sound of her laughter. The genuine smile on her face.
Trudy comes up the steps, stopping suddenly when she sees Y/n laughing and smiling with Jay.
Something she had never seen the detective do.
"Is she laughing?" Trudy asks, clearly shocked, leaning over to Kim.
Kim nods, still in a state of awe "Yeah" she answers quietly.
"I've never seen her laugh, much less smile" Trudy can't recall a time she saw her that way.
"I've only ever seen her laugh or smile like that with Jay" Hailey adds in, recalling the only times she had seen the girl laugh.
The team is only broken out of their shocked states when Jay and Y/n walk past them, going down the steps side by side, Jay saying a quick "night, guys".
Jay pushes the gate open, holding it for Y/n before they make their way to the main doors, him holding those for her too.
"Do you want to get a quick dinner?" Jay asks, it was actually a fairly common occurrence for them to get dinner together after work.
Y/n shrugs "Why not, as long as it's not chinese tonight, I am not in the mood" she tells him pointedly, holding her pointer finger up.
"Okay, so, mexican, got it" Jay nods "Wanna take my truck? I'll just get you in the morning" he offers, a small smile on his face as they approach the vehicle.
"Only if you get me coffee" Y/n retorts, a sweet smile on her face, looking up to Jay.
"For you? Anything" Jay answers back seriously, a big, goofy smile on his face as he opens the passenger door for her.
ââ
Y/n sleepily got out of bed the next morning, going through her usual routine of getting ready before getting dressed.
Her eyes are still full of sleep as she pulls on a pair of jeans and a sweater.
She checks the time, guessing Jay would probably already be outside.
Quickly gathering her things and clipping her badge and gun on her hip, she makes her way out of her apartment and down the stairs.
As Y/n makes her way outside, thatâs when she sees Jayâs truck parked directly outside of the building. And Jay is leaning against the passenger door, his hands in his coat pockets.
Itâs hard to describe the feeling. That feeling when you just get so excited to see someone you feel like you canât breathe for a second.
âGood morning, Grumpy girlâ Jay greets her with a smile, pulling the passenger door open.
âGood morning, chucklesâ She retorts back jokingly as she gets inside the truck.
Jay gives her an offended look before shutting the door and making his way around the truck to the driver side.
He finds Y/n already sipping from the cup of coffee he placed in her cupholder with the words âGrumpy Girlâ written on it.
âJay Halstead, you know the way to my heartâ

Beep
Beep
Beep
The alarm clock on the bedside table beeped, announcing it was time to wake up and get ready for the day.
With an annoyed and groggy groan, Jay reached over pressing the snooze. For a second, the night before had slipped his mind and then everything with the case and the night he had where he had confessed he still loves Y/n and her confession all came flooding back to him.
"I still love you, It never went away."
Her words are etched into his brain, he was never going to forget that.
She still loves him. He figured after all of these years, after he had disappeared and had to lie about who he was, she wouldn't want anything to do with him. But she still loves him.
Jay is a realist but he can also dream. He knows they will have to get to know each other again, that is if she continues to allow him to be in her life after all of this.
So, now, he finds himself in bed, tangled in the comforter on his back, but this time he's not alone. And it is not some random girl.
His stomach is filled with butterflies and he feels a warm surge go through his body when he looks down to find Y/n tangled in the comforter too.
One leg is out of the blanket, her hair is a mess and she is cuddled up to his chest, sleeping peacefully.
God I missed this.
He thought to himself, it was going to be extremely hard to let her go now after all of these years but he would have to for her sake if that is what she wants.
Jay fights himself for a second before very gently and quietly, sneaking out from under her and heading for the bathroom to get in the shower to start his day.
--
Y/n wakes up to a phone ringing, she was sleeping so peacefully- it was the best sleep she had gotten in years.
She was irritated to say the least, how could someone interrupt-Oh shit.
That's when it all came back to her. Her brother dead and gone, Jay is on the case, she's staying with Jay, she's in Jay's bed right now.
She pushed herself up into a sitting position, looking around the bedroom.
Jay was nowhere to be found, she could hear noises coming from somewhere outside of the room but wasn't sure where.
That's when her phone rang again.
Y/n sighed before taking the phone from the nightstand and unplugging it from the charger.
Wait? Did she plug that in?
"Hello" She answers tiredly.
"So you thought your little boyfriend could protect you" the voice on the other end says and Y/n immediately recognizes the voice as the one that called yesterday.
Her blood runs cold as her one hand is now gripping the sheets below her. Her heart beat quickening.
"That's alright" the voice chuckles, an evil snicker.
That's when Jay walks into the bedroom, surprised to see Y/n up. Only coming back to the room to grab his gun and badge, that's when he notices the pale look on her face, the shaking in her hands.
Jay already knows what's happening, almost storming his way over and taking the phone out of her hand.
Y/n doesn't protest, feeling the same terrified feeling as before.
"Who is this" Jay says into the phone and Y/n can feel the anger radiating off of him.
She's shocked there isn't smoke coming out of his ears.
"Ah, detective, You think you can protect your precious pet? You're wrong" the man's voice says before the call ends with a click.
Jay notices Y/n's breath quickening, like she's gasping for air.
He drops the phone on the bed, immediately crouching down to her level.
"Hey, hey, hey. It's okay, it's just me and you. Okay? I won't let anyone hurt you" his voice is soft, gentle as he places a hand on her knee, another taking her hand in his.
"W-what if y-you aren-t there" Y/n manages to get out in gasps, tears in her eyes.
Jay shakes his head, feeling his heart break at the sight of the tears flowing down her cheeks now. This time he doesn't hesitate, reaching out to wipe her tears.
"I'm not leaving you alone until we find this guy, okay? Until we find all of them. I will never let you get hurt again" Jay promises and in that moment he's referring to how he hurt her but also anyone who physically tries to hurt her.
Taking her hand and pressing into his chest, right over heart, "Just breathe with me, come on babe, I know you can do it" he encourages, taking in deep breaths.
Y/n focuses on the feeling of his chest rising and falling as he breathes, she focuses on how blue his eyes are, the feeling of his hand holding hers, the scent of his cologne.
In those things, she can feel herself relaxing.
"There you go, I knew you could do it" Jay gives her a soft smile, gently rubbing the back of her hand with his thumb to soothe her.
"Now, I have to head to work, do you want to come with me? I can drop you off at the station while I meet the team at your house" Jay offers, feeling better if he knew where she was and if she was surrounded by cops.
Y/n thinks about it for a moment, would she rather be alone in this apartment, waiting for someone to kill her? Or would she rather be at the station?
"Okay" Y/n nods, giving Jay a small smile.
Jay smiles, standing up straight "Okay, why don't you get ready and I'll wait for you in the kitchen?" he suggests and Y/n sends a small nod.
--
Y/n follows Jay into the district, feeling a little nervous.
Not because she did anything wrong, but because she had never been around so many police for one. For two, her brother used to be in a gang and they used to practically live with said gang.
It was like Jay sensed her nervousness, glancing at her and shooting her a soft smile, taking her hand in his.
Y/n takes notice of the older woman behind the desk who is practically burning a hole through her. And oddly enough, Jay leads her straight to her.
"Hey, Trudy, would you be able to spare someone to hang out upstairs for awhile?" Jay asks, hoping just for a regular patrol officer.
The older woman, or Trudy as Jay calls her hums.
"What's this for, Chuckles?" Trudy asks curiously, wondering what the task was.
Jay rolls his eyes at the nickname, Y/n can't help but giggle a little at the name, covering her mouth.
Jay looks to her, raising an eyebrow "Oh you think that's funny?" Jay teases, an amused look on his face.
Trudy glances between the two curiously, finding the interaction amusing and adorable--but she would never admit that.
"I just need someone to hang out with Y/n, here for a little while we process the crime scene" Jay explains.
Trudy looks around, finding an older officer behind her.
"Jenkins, you cover the desk until I'm back" she says, not even waiting for a reply or confirmation before walking out from behind the desk.
"Come on, I make a pretty good cup of coffee" Trudy says with a kind smile, linking her arms with Y/n and pulling her away from Jay upstairs.
Y/n looks back at Jay nervously to which he just gives her a nod, letting her know it will be okay. He watches, waiting for them to make it upstairs before he heads out the front doors again to meet the team at Y/n's house.
--
"So" Trudy starts as she places the mug of hot coffee down in front of Y/n, taking a seat opposite of her "How do you know Chuckles?" she finishes.
Y/n sighs "It's kind of a long story" she says hesitantly.
"We've got time" Trudy tells her, waiting for her to continue.
"Well, my brother was in a gang and Jay was undercover--of course I didn't know that at the time-- he became my brother's best friend and we dated. Then Jay just disappeared. We found out he was a cop and my brother and I got out of that life. But Jay comes knocking at my door yesterday after ten years to tell me my brother had been killed so, here we are" Y/n finishes the small recap, staring at the coffee mug that sits in front of her.
Trudy reaches over, placing her hand on top of Y/n's, giving her a sympathetic smile "I'm sorry about your brother. If anyone will find out who did it, it's this unit" the older woman reassures her.
Y/n shoots her a sad smile, the thought of her brother heavy on her mind.
Brian was the only person she had and now what was she going to do?
Y/n heard voices, some commotion, before seeing a brunette woman and a taller brunette man, leading someone past the room.
Then there was Jay, entering the break room, his vest on. Y/n was a little confused, weren't they just going to process evidence at her house?
"Hey, how's it going?" Jay asks, a smile on his face when he meets her eyes.
"I was just telling Y/n some stories about you" Trudy teases, making Y/n nod in agreement, a smile on her face.
"I hope all good ones" Jay jokes, leaning on the table and looking at Y/n.
She shrugs, leaning back in her chair "Maybe, maybe not" she teases back.
Jay rolls his eyes before switching to a more serious demeanor "Does the name Michael Juarez ring a bell?" he asks her.
Y/n thinks for a second before shaking her head, "No, I've never heard that name. Why who is he?" she asks wondering who that was.
"We think he was the one making the phone calls. If we play some voice recordings for you, do you think you could ID the same voice that made the calls yesterday and today?" Jay asks cautiously.
They already have the phone records showing the calls Juarez made to her but they had to be sure.
"Definitely" Y/n tells him with full confidence.
Jay smirks, squeezing her hand gently "That's my girl, I'll be back in 30" he tells her before leaving the room.
Y/n can feel her cheeks getting hot as soon as he leaves.
"That's my girl"
--
Jay had gone to help Kevin set up the voice recordings for Y/n to listen to.
They had found out Michael Juarez was the new leader of the gang Brian was in and he had word out on the street for anyone that could track down Y/n and Brian--wanting to tie up loose ends.
They had been the only ones to just get out. To not have any ties to the gang, to make it out unharmed--until now.
When Juarez found out about it, he made it his top priority to take them out.
"So, once this case is over--you think you'll see her again?" Kevin asks, side eyeing Jay as he navigates the tablet in hand.
Jay glances at his friend, shaking his head "I don't know" he mumbles.
He hopes so, he really does.
He's not sure if he could come back from it if she didn't want to see him after this.
But he would always respect her wishes.
Kevin is silent, patting his friend's shoulder.
Jay stands up from the chair he's sat at "Well let's get this done so we can nail that SOB and get his buddies".
He's determined to arrest and put away the men responsible for Brian's death and the ones that attempted to harm Y/n.
When Jay and Kevin enter the break room, Jay is surprised to find Y/n and Voight laughing together.
It shocks Kevin, stopping the both of them in their tracks.
Jay clears his throat, walking further into the room, catching their attention. "We have six recordings for you to listen to" he starts, sitting down in the chair next to Y/n, across from Voight.
"All you have to do is listen to the recordings and let us know if you can identify the man that called yesterday and today" Jay finishes his instructions, a gentle tone in his voice and his eyes soft as he gives her a reassuring smile.
Y/n gives him a nervous smile "Okay, sounds easy enough" she jokes.
Jay plays the first recording, Y/n shakes her head "No" she confirms it's not the voice.
Jay plays two more before Y/n stops him, her eyes wide and chills running down her spine.
"That's it--that's him" Y/n can feel her hands start to shake just from hearing the man's voice.
Jay nods, handing the tablet to Kevin as he reaches out, squeezing her hand "Good, you did really good" he reassures her with a soft voice.
Voight stands from the table, looking between Kevin and Jay "Let's get the names of the accomplices and wrap this up" .
--
Y/n sits on the couch in the break room, fidgeting with her hands. She had been at the district all day, having only going out with Jay to grab a quick lunch before heading back to the district.
She didn't mind, considering it was for her safety and by the end of it she could go home and be safe.
But, she still was anxious to get out of there.
She also wasn't ready to be alone with her thoughts and her grief.
It was getting to be around five pm when Jay knocked on the doorframe, alerting her of his presence.
"Hey" he greets her softly, making his way to the small couch and sitting next to her.
"Hey" Y/n greets him, her hands stilling as she met his blue eyes.
"We got 'em, all of them. Juarez confessed to Brian's murder himself, he'll be going away for the rest of his life" Jay explains, he feels a weight lifted off of his shoulders. Knowing the threat is taken care of.
But he feels uneasy still. Maybe because he's afraid he'll never see her again.
Y/n feels relief wash over her, a smile on her face.
Before she can even think, she's hugging Jay.
Jay can barely process what's happening but immediately wraps his arms around her.
"Thank you, Jay" Y/n is grateful that the threat to her life is gone and there will be justice for her brother.
"Of course" he answers quietly as they let go.
Y/n lets out a little laugh "You know, Brian would probably lose it if he saw us right now" she says quietly, thinking about her brother seeing them together.
"I wish he was here, I wish he got to see you again--you were his best friend"
Jay chuckles, there's a hint of sadness behind it "He was mine too" he replies honestly.
It was true, at the time Jay was fresh out of the academy, he had been put under as the perfect person for the job. He didn't expect to relate to Brian and to grow so close to him, forgetting sometimes that it was all built on a lie.
He also never expected to fall so hard and fast for Y/n.
"I can take you home now" Jay says after a moment.
Y/n nods, standing up from the couch.
Jay stands up guiding her out of the room and out through the bullpen.
They stay in comfortable silence as they make their way outside and to Jay's truck.
Jay rushes forward, opening the passenger side door for her.
"Thank you" Y/n feels the butterflies again as she gets into the truck, waiting for Jay.
Jay gets in the driver's seat, Y/n watches as he puts the truck in drive, pulling out of the parking lot.
It's only a ten minute drive from the district to her house, one that's spent in silence.
Y/n wants to speak, she wants to tell him not to leave.
Jay isn't sure what to do, he doesn't to push her boundaries.
As the truck comes to a stop in front of the cream colored house, Y/n feels dread fill her stomach as Jay shuts the truck off, getting out.
He makes his way around the truck, opening the passenger door for her once again.
Y/n gives him a small smile as she gets out of the truck, Jay shutting the door behind her.
"Hey, Jay?" Y/n stops in her tracks, at the base of the steps that lead to her front door.
"Yeah?" Jay can feel his heart beating quickly in anticipation.
Y/n sighs, looking at her feet before meeting Jay/s blue eyes "I don't want to not see you again--I-i don't think I could lose you again" the young woman admits.
She can feel her hands shake, maybe Jay won't feel the same way?
Jay feels a sense of relief wash over him, his stomach is doing flips again.
He notices the shake in her hands is back, reaching out and taking her hands in his.
"Hey, I'm not going anywhere. Now that I found you again, you are not getting rid of me that easily" It's a promise but also a declaration, he won't be going anywhere as long as he can help it.
Y/n smiles, feeling warm and a sense of happiness "Good, do you want to come in for a drink?"
--
Y/n sighed, turning over in bed for what felt like the hundredth time in the past hour.
She had fallen asleep around midnight, a little after Jay left.
They sat in her living room, catching up on their lives--what had changed since they last been together.
Y/n learned Jay has a brother, Will, and that he is a doctor at Chicago Medical Center.
She heard a lot of stories about the brothers.
She also heard about Jay's ex and her moving to DC abruptly to take a job with the FBI.
Jay confessed that his heart wasn't really in it for awhile but it still hurt when she left. He healed from it, never losing the thought of Y/n but he also never thought they would see each other again-that it wasn't possible.
Y/n didn't think it was possible either. They were from two very different worlds. At the time at least.
Now? She's just a normal woman, grieving the loss of her brother, trying to navigate the love of her life popping back into her life, and her job.
She had already talked to her boss, explaining the situation and they had told her not to worry about work and to take all the time she needed.
Truthfully she didn't know if she could really ever go back there, considering everyone knew her brother and he had been there countless times.
Jay on the other hand knew basically everything about her, not much had changed other than getting out of the gang and having a quiet life.
She went a date or two here and there, never able to commit to anyone because she had a fear of them leaving or not being someone she could trust.
That can happen when you are in a serious relationship with someone and they disappear, only to find out he was lying about his identity.
Brian had a girlfriend for a year before she cheated on him, he was also on the less trusting side.
He worked at a mechanic shop, making quick friends with the guys there.
Y/n on the other hand led a more secluded life, going to work, run errands, go home. Only really ever seeing her brother regularly.
And then there is now, she lies awake in bed--knowing she should be asleep but unable to do so.
The nightmare she had of being made to watch someone shoot her brother all too real.
She glances at the clock, 3:13am.
An idea flooded her mind and she lay there contemplating it for a second.
Picking up her phone, she let out a sigh.
He probably won't even pick up.
Y/n clicked on the contact "Jay", hitting the call button and placing the phone on speaker before laying on the pillow beside her.
One ring.
I shouldn't wake him.
Two rings.
I should hang up
"Halstead" Jay's voice is deeper than normal, full of sleep.
He must have been confused when he heard nothing on the other line, taking the phone away from his ear before looking at the caller ID.
"Y/n?" he says into the phone, sounding more awake now.
"I'm sorry for waking you up--I didn't really expect you to answer I just-um-I had a nightmare and can't sleep" She felt like a little kid, feeling embarrassed now and like she wanted to sink into a hole and hide.
There's shuffling on the other end for a second. "Give me 15 minutes" Jay says before the call ends.
Y/n is confused but also feels ashamed. He's probably angry with her. But 15 minutes? he didn't have to call back if he was mad.
--
Jay parks his truck outside of the townhouse, shutting off and getting out, making his way up to the door.
When Y/n called there wasn't an ounce of hesitation. She didn't ask him to come over, but she didn't have to. He would move mountains for her.
He knocks on the door without a second thought.
Inside, Y/n paces back and forth in her bedroom. Now she was really down bad.
Her mind already in a dark place about her brother and now Jay was pissed at her for waking him up.
He probably doesn't want to deal with me, too much of a burden.
She couldn't blame him though.
It would probably annoy her if someone woke her up in the middle of the night about a bad dream.
What am I five years old? I am grown adult that can't handle a little bad dre-
A knock at her front door startles her out of her thoughts.
Weary and unsure, she peeks out of the window in her bedroom facing the front of the home.
When she sees that familiar truck and a brunette at her door, she can feel her heart beating rapidly.
Not wanting to make him wait, she makes her way downstairs quickly, unlocking the door and opening it.
Jay takes in her appearance, a clearly oversized sweatshirt and a pair of shorts, her hair messy from the tossing and turning.
He can't help the small smile on his face.
"I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have called or woke you up-- I-i can handle a silly little dream, I shouldn't have bothered you" Y/n blurts out instantly, and Jay can see the fear in her eyes.
"Hey" Jay says softly, stepping inside and placing his hands on her shoulders, ducking down to meet her eyes. "You could never bother me. And I doubt it was a silly little dream. You can always call me, day or night and I'll be here, okay?".
Y/n can feel relief wash over her, her heart warm and her stomach has the butterfly feeling again.
The promised of him being there, no matter what--that was more than she ever had in someone.
"Okay" Y/n says softly.
Jay turns quickly, shutting the door behind him and locking both locks.
"Now, do you want to talk about the dream?" he asks gently.
Y/n shakes her head "No, can you just stay with me tonight?" she asks sheepishly.
Jay smiles, taking his head in hers "Of course I can, let's go to bed".
He guides her upstairs, to the bedroom he had to save her from just the other day.
Y/n gets in the bed first, Jay follows after placing his keys, phone, badge and gun on the bedside table.
Jay doesn't hesitate, wrapping his arm around her and pulling her into his side. Y/n rests her head on his chest, one hand resting over his heart, her legs tangled in his.
The scent of his cologne, the feeling of his sweatpants on her legs, the feeling of his hand running through her hair. That's enough to make her feel safe, safe enough for her eyes to droop and her breathing to slow down.
"Thank you" Y/n mutters quietly "for making me feel safe" .
"Always" Jay whispers, placing a kiss on her hair, Y/n already fast asleep.

Description: Jay fell in love when he was undercover, ten years later they find each other again when thereâs a homicide
Pairings: Jay x Reader
Warnings: Betrayel, death, loss of a loved one, broken heart, mentions of depression, mentions of lies
âHow was the game last night?â Haley asked her partner curiously, referring to the hockey game Jay and Will went to.
âIt was great, the hawks beat âem by 6 pointsâ Jay answers, turning down the street the homicide call is located at.
The truck is silent as Jay parks, getting out of the truck and walking up to the house where they saw Kim standing outside, talking to an officer.
âHeyâ Kim greets them âThe rest of the teamâs insideâ she informs them as she motions for them to follow her inside.
âOne body?â Jay asks as they walk further into the house.
âYeah, male, early 30âs, shot execution styleâ Kim explains as they come to a stop in the living room.
Jay crouches down, peeling back the tarp to look at the body.
âOh godâŠâ Jay feels his heart sink, his stomach in knots when he sees who it is.
The team share confused looks, wondering why Jay seems so distraught over the dead man on the floor.
âJay? You know him?â Voight asks, confusion in his voice.
Jay sighs, standing up straight, not taking his eyes off the body âYeahâŠI was undercover with Narcotics a little after I got back from the rangers, I was trying to take down the gang Brian was in but they pulled me out for another assignmentâ Jay explains, stepping away from the team and towards the fireplace in front of them.
A certain picture on the fireplace makes butterflies appear in his stomach, itâs a y/h/c girl standing next to Brian in front of the house.
âYou know her?â Kevin asks, coming up behind Jay, noticing him staring at the picture.
Jay nods, clearing his throat âSheâs the one that got awayâ he says lowly.
Jay had few regrets, having made peace with his demons long ago. Y/n was the only regret that remained. She was and still is the love of his life, he was never able to forget her.
âHalstead, are you going to be okay on this one?â Voight asks, wondering if he needs to pull Jay off the case.
âYeah, Iâm good. Iâll make the notificationâ He says, receiving a nod from Hank before him and Haley leave the house.
â
Jay takes a deep breath as he and Haley walk up the steps to the cream colored townhouse.
He can feel his heart beating faster as Haley knocks on the door.
Thereâs some shuffling somewhere in the house before the door opens and Jay can feel his breath hitch in his lungs.
Y/n doesnât say anything either. She had never expected to see Jay again. âJay?â Y/n questioned, feeling confusion among other feelings rise up in her.
âHey, Y/nâŠ.can we come in?â Jay asks and Y/n looks between him and Hailey before nodding, stepping aside.
Hailey could sense the tension between the two of them.
âSo, Iâm guessing youâre here on police business, not here to lie to me again are you?â Y/n said, a hint of bitterness in her voice.
âY/n, I think you should sit downâ Hailey says softly.
Y/n looks between the two of them, now she knows somethings wrong.
âItâs BrianâŠâ Jay says hesitantly.
Y/n is silent for a second, looking down at her feet. She can feel her hands shaking, the tears coming to her eyes. She had a feeling.
âH-how?â She mutters out and when neither detective answers, she looks up at them, making eye contact with Jay.
âHe was shot, in his houseâ Jay tells her softly.
Thatâs all it took for the tears to flow, the sobs to rack through her body. Out of instinct, Jay stepped forward, wrapping his arms around her as she cried into his shirt.
After she composed herself, Y/n backed away from Jay, wiping at her face.
âIâm so sorry, Y/nâ Jay says quietly, afraid if he had said it any louder they would hear the crack in his voice.
Y/n doesnât say anything, motioning for them to sit on the couch before she sits in the chair opposite of them.
âDo you have any idea who would have done this? Any enemies from other gangs?â Haley asks with a softer tone.
Y/n sighs, shaking her head as she wipes her cheeks with her hands.
Jay canât help but feel the urge to wipe them for her, to hold her again and tell her everything will be okay.
But that wasnât his place anymore.
âHe got out of that life, he got out shortly after you disappeared, Jayâ The woman says, the hint of bitterness back in her voice when she says his name.
âWe left Chicago for a couple years, came back once things calmed down and each of us had regular jobs and normal lives. Brian was working at a mechanic shop, Mikeyâs. We havenât seen anyone from that life since you leftâ Y/n explains, feeling confused and hopeless.
She thought they had gotten away from all of the violence, from everything.
âWhen did you last see Brian?â Jay asks.
Y/n can see the look in his eyes, she can tell he wants to ask her more, talk to her about things. But thatâs something she wonât let happen, not now.
âTwo days ago, we had dinner here. He was normal, his usual goofy selfâ Y/n says quietly, recalling the dinner they had.
Jay and Haley exchange a look before they both stand up.
âThatâs all for now, but please stay in town incase we have more questionsâ Haley says and Y/n lets out a sarcastic laugh.
âMy brother just died, iâm not going on vacationâ she says before sighing âSorry, that was rudeâ Y/n apologises.
Haley gives her a sympathetic smile before heading to the door.
Jay steps forward to where Y/n is standing now in the middle of the living room âPlease call me, if you think of anything or if you need anythingâ he tells her, handing her the card in hand.
âOkayâ she says quietly, taking the card out of his hand gently.
Jay takes that as his cue, going to follow Haley out.
âJayâ Y/nâs voice stops him in his tracks âIâm glad itâs you that got the caseâ she says, giving him a small sad smile.
Jay nods, giving her a small smile before following Haley outside.
Once outside the house, Haley looks to her partner as they walk back to the truck âYouâre still in love with herâ the blonde states.
âYeahâ Jay sighs, glancing back at the house, noticing the curtains in the window by the front door moving, like Y/n had been watching them leave.
ââ
Y/n felt sick, nauseous, like she wanted to be sick. All day after Jay and Haley left she just sat on the couch in her living room. Unable to move.
Her brother was gone and the love of her life who had disappeared almost 10 years ago showed back up at her door. Except he was a cop now.
Y/n and Brian searched for Jay after he left, he was Brianâs best friend and Y/nâs very serious boyfriend.
âYou donât think heâs dead, right?â Y/n asked hesitantly, sitting in the rundown apartment that she and her brother called home.
Brian looked back at his sister from where he was looking out the window, making his way over to the crappy couch and kneeling down in front of her.
âHey, weâll find him, okay? I promise weâll find himâ Brian promised, patting her knee comfortingly. He couldnât stand seeing his baby sister so depressed.
Y/n was usually tough, she didnât take any shit. But with Jay? She was different, she was soft, she was warm and smiley. Brian hadnât seen that in her since before they lost their parents in a car accident when they were young.
âItâs justâhe promised he would come back to me, B. We havenât heard from him in 3 days, where could he be? What if something happened to him?â Y/n felt like she was going insane.
They searched for a week before Brian had come home one day, telling Y/n that her love was actually a cop. He had found out when one of his friends, a tech nerd had gotten a pop on Jayâs name. Except now his name was Jay Halstead, Detective with the Chicago Police Department Intelligence Unit.
âHeâs a copâ Brian simply said, anger in his voice as he slammed the door shut behind him.
Y/n frowned, giving him a confused look, following him to his bedroom. âWhoâs a cop?â She questioned.
âJay, Heâs a cop. Youâre lover boy is a copâ Brian continues.
âW-what? No, no, heâs not a cop, he was in the rangers-â She couldnât bring herself to believe it, he couldnât be a cop. He wouldnât betray her like that.
âIt was all a lie, Y/n. Everything he told you was a lieâ
Brian wanted to find Jay. Wanted to kill him. But Y/n made two very good points.
One. Killing a cop was a massively stupid idea.
Two. She still loved him.
Her phone ringing broke her out of her thoughts.
Sighing, she picked up the phone and answeredânot even bothering to check the caller ID.
âHello?â She answered and was met by silence.
âHello?â Y/n said again, this time she could hear breathing.
âYouâre nextâ the voice says before the call ends with a click.
Her hands shook as she placed the phone down before looking around the living room.
Without a second thought, Y/n stood from the couch, pocketing her phone before going around and shutting all of the curtains and locking all of the doors before finally making it to her bedroom and locking herself in.
She stares at the card in her hand, maybe she should call Jay?
No, she doesnât need his help. Not after what he did to her.
ââ
Y/n had fallen asleep, exhausted from the crying and the fear running through her body.
When she woke up, it was dark in her room, clearly night time. For a second she forgot her reality, her brother was dead and now someone was coming for her.
As she walked to the bedroom door, wanting to go downstairs to get a glass of water, she heard a thud from downstairs.
Maybe Iâm just imagining it?
Then there were menâs voices.
âShut up! Sheâll hear usâ one whispered
âWho cares, sheâs about to die anywayâ another said
âI told you he was too recklessâ a third voice argued back
Y/nâs blood ran cold as she quickly but quietly made her way the closet in the bathroom, squeezing herself in as she dialed the number on the card.
Please pick up
âHalsteadâ His voice came through the phone.
âThereâs three men in my house, theyâre trying to kill meâ
Jay could feel his heart drop to his stomach, he thanked God that he had some sort of feeling in his gut that made him park at the end of her street, terrified something would happen.
âWhere are you?â Jay asked, throwing the truck in drive and turning the lights and siren on.
Sure he could have just ran there, but in his mind he hoped that maybe hearing the siren or seeing the lights would scare the men away.
He couldnât care less if he didnât catch them right now, he just wanted to make sure they didnât get to her. He could figure out the rest from there but not with her gone or hurt.
âI-iâm in the bathroom closet upstairsâ Y/n whispers, she could hear the men yelling now. Something about cops.
âIâll be right there, just stay putâ Jay says sternly before ending the call and calling it in.
ââ
Y/n could feel her heart pounding in her ears. She felt like she would have a heart attack at this point.
Seconds felt like hours, she was probably only in that closet for 4 minutes but it felt like forever.
She heard footsteps, loud, and shouting. Then she heard what sounded like a door slamming open downstairs and more footsteps.
The door to her bedroom open and she thought this is it. This is when I die. At least Iâll be with my brother.
But fate had a different plan.
The door to the closet flew open, a breathless and pale Jay Halstead stood there, his hands were shaking. He wasnât sure if it was the adrenaline or the fear of losing her again. Or both.
âHey, itâs just me. Just me. Theyâre goneâ Jay whispers as he kneels down to Y/nâs view.
The scene breaks his heart, the way sheâs curled into herself, her body shaking, tears down her face. Her eyes are red and puffy.
âH-how did you get here so fast?â Y/n questioned, she felt disoriented, confused, scared, but most of all she felt safe when she saw him.
âI parked at the end of the street, I had a bad feeling and I was not going to let something happen to youâ Jay answers as he helps the girl up from the floor, guiding her gently out of the bathroom.
âThereâs some medics outside Iâd like them to check you outâ Jay says, not as a question.
Y/n stays silent, sheâs not hurt physically, emotionally though? Sheâs wrecked.
Jay guides her down the stairs and out to the ambulance where the EMTS have her sit on the step while they check her out.
He doesnât leave her side once.
The team is already there, having pulled up when Jay was bringing her out.
Jay goes to walk over to them, explain whatâs going on but Y/n reaches out, grabbing his handâshocking both of them.
She didnât mean to, it just felt like an instinct, plus she was kind of nervous right now considering the circumstances.
Jay was shocked but didnât miss a beat, glancing from where their hands were connected to the girlâs face.
âHey, Iâm just going to talk to my team and then Iâll be right backâ he tells her softly, dipping down to meet her eyes. After heâs met with a reluctant nod, she lets his hand go.
The team doesnât say anything, just letting the moment happen. It was evident to all of them Jay had some feelings for this woman. Hailey and Kevin the only ones he verbally made it clear to.
âDid you get a look at the guys?â Voight asks instantly and Jay shakes his head.
âNo, as I pulled up to the house I think they headed out the back door. She didnât get a look at them earlier, just heard their voices. But Iâm sure whoever it was are the same people or person that killed Brianâ Jay explains to the team, he knows damn well it was the same people.
Before anyone can say anything else, Jay feels a smaller hand on the back of his arm. Turning around, he sees Y/n wrapped in the blanket the EMTS gave her.
He notices how she shrinks under the teams gazeâconsidering its five cops and she literally was running with a gang for years.
Jay steps a little to the side to block their view a little in an attempt to make her feel better.
âH-hey, I should have told you earlier but I-i got a call this afternoon, after you guys left. It was an unknown number and all they said was âYouâre nextâ and hung up. Iâm sorry for not saying something beforeâ Y/n explains nervously.
She knows she should have said something sooner but can you blame her? She was in shock until this moment.
Kim was already writing down notes, making sure to jot down to have the number traced.
âNo, hey, thatâs okay. We can still try to trace it. Thereâs no reason to be sorryâ Jay says comfortingly, placing his hands on her arms and rubbing soft circles with his thumbs.
He had no care in the world that his team and boss were right there, watching everything.
This was Y/n after all he would do ANYTHING for her.
âHi, Y/n, Iâm sergeant Voight.â The older man was kind, softening his voice âDo you have somewhere you can stay? Maybe with friends or family until this dies down?â Voight asks.
They needed a place for her to be safe until this dies down/until they find the men that are after her.
âNoâŠI donât have anyone, it was just me and Brianâ Y/n mutters and it was like that for years, before Jay came in to their lives and then again after he left.
âHey, do you think you could hang out with my partner for a second? Remember Hailey?â Jay asks sweetly, wanting to speak to Voight on his own.
Y/n nods without a word and Hailey smiles, taking over for Jay, wrapping an arm around the girlâs shoulders.
âHey, why do we go talk over here for a minute?â Hailey offers, guiding her away from the group.
Jay looks back to Voight, the older man looking at him curiously.
âShe can stay with me, just until this is cleared up and we know they arenât after her. Sarge, Itâs the only way Iâll know sheâs safeâ Jay reasons with his boss.
Voight knows against âthe rulesâ but the unit has done things ten times worse than this and he knows he would do it if he was in Jayâs shoes and it was someone he cared aboutâhe has done it.
âAlright.â Voight answers simply âItâs late, letâs have patrol tape off the house and then weâll come back in the morning.â
Jay is more than happy as he walks back over to Y/n and Hailey.
âHey, you can stay with me until all of this blows overâ Jay tells Y/n and she looks at him with a confused look but nods.
Then Jay looks to Hailey âVoight said to wrap it up for tonight and weâll come back in the morning to process everything. Iâm going to get her homeâ he tells his partner.
Hailey nods, giving Y/n a sympathetic smile as she squeezes her shoulder, the blanket long forgotten now âLet me know if you need anythingâ the blonde says kindly.
Y/n gives her a small smile âThanks, Haileyâ she says softly before the detective leaves her alone with him.
âReady?â Jay asks, a small smile on his face and Y/n nods before Jay leads her to his truck.
ââ
Jay switches the lights on, stepping aside to let Y/n into the apartment he calls home.
âI only have one bedroom, so Iâll take the couch and you can have the bedâ Jay tells her as he shuts the door behind them and locks it.
Y/n spins on her heels, looking back at Jay âUm, actually could you maybe stay with me tonight?â She asks hesitantly.
Never in a million years did she think she would be sharing a room much less a bed with Jay ever again. Before the events of today, she never thought she would even see him again.
Jay is taken back by the question but quickly recovers âY-yeah of course, if thats what you wantâ he says nervously.
If you had told him that he would be in this moment right now, Y/n Y/l/n in his apartment, not his UC apartment. But his apartment, where he is Jay Halstead, detective with the CPD. Not as Jay the former Ranger turned gang member. He would have never believed you.
Jay watches with a warm heart as Y/n slips off her shoes at doorway, before turning to him. She always made it a point to have shoes off at the door. It was one of the small, little things he always loved about her.
âSo, this is your apartmentâ Y/n comments as she walks further into the home, looking around the living room.
She notices the pictures, the ones of Jay with the people from his unit she met tonight. Theres a few with a red head man and then thereâs one that caught her eye.
âYou kept this?â Y/n asks, feeling the air leave her lungs for a second.
The picture is in a wooden frame sat on a shelf on the wall, Jay is stood with his arms around Y/n and Brian. Each of them with a wide grin on their faces. She remembered that day vividly, they had gone to the state fair, it was something the tough gang members usually would do. But Brian would have done anything for his little sister.
And Jay? Oh he was whipped, and still is, judging by the way he watches Y/n with love in his eyes.
He knows itâs not the same. He knows itâs been 10 years. But she hasnât changed a bit from what heâs seen and neither has he.
âYeah, I couldnât let it goâ Jay says, letting out a small chuckle at the picture as he now stands behind her looking over her shoulder at it.
Thereâs silence, Y/n isnât sure what to say. She has a million questions in her head and all at the same time she misses her brother.
âWas it real?â Y/n says finally, the question had been eating away at her all day since Jay walked back into her life.
âWas what real?â Jay asks curiously.
Y/n canât bring herself to look at him, staring at the picture still.
âDid you really love me? Was it all a lie? Was everything you said a lie?â She finally gets out the questions that have been swimming around in her head.
Jay doesnât miss a beat, placing his hands on her shoulders and gently spinning her around, lifting her chin with his finger and thumb when she wonât look at him.
âYes, I really loved you. I really love you still. You are the love of my life.â He put emphasis on the current âloveâ âEverything I told you was true except for the fact that I didnât tell you about me being a cop. Otherwiseâeverything I ever said was true.â Jay answers honestly because it was all true.
He could never hide anything from her, never in a million years.
Y/n doesn't know what to say, what to feel anymore.
"We searched for you, after you disappeared. I was a depressed mess. Brian came home one day, I had never seen him so mad" Y/n begins to recall the events that took place ten years ago as she looks down at the ground, fidgeting with her hands.
"He found out you were a cop, that you worked in the itelligence unit. He wanted to find you, kill you even. I told him it was a horrible idea, that you can't just kill a cop" Y/n chuckled at the memory before sobering, look up at Jay to see an unreadable look on his face, guilt?
"But I also told him he couldn't hurt you, I couldn't let him do that because I was still in love with you. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I knew something happened to you by his hands..." Y/n trails off, she recalls her brother taking care of her during that time, helping her get over Jay.
"I'm so sorry I put you through that" Jay says quietly, he feels like he can only apologize, that nothing he says will be good enough.
Y/n has a small, sad smile on her face, shaking her head and that's when Jay notices the tears in her eyes. "I just wish he was here right now" She says quietly, her voice cracking slightly.
Brian was the only other person she had cared about since their parents died and he was the one constant in her life and now he was gone.
Jay could feel the pain in his chest, not hesitating to reach for her and wrap his arms around her. And she didn't hesitate to wrap her arms around him, to grip the material of his shirt in her hands.
All she wanted right now was to feel safe. And despite the betrayal all those years ago, the longing for him and the hurt. She still felt that safety in his arms.
"I know" is all he could manage to get out, rubbing her back soothingly.
After a minute or two of just being in each other's embrace, Jay spoke up again "It's getting late, you need to get some rest" he says into her hair.
Y/n sighs, pulling away, letting go of his shirt.
"Come on, you can wear some of my clothes for tonight" he offers, taking her hand in his and leading her down the hallway to the bedroom.
Y/n watches as he flips on the light, going to his dresser and pulling out a tshirt and a pair of his boxers.
"There should be an extra toothbrush and toothpaste in the second drawer" Jay offers, motioning to the bathroom.
"Thanks" she says quietly as she makes her way into the bathroom, shutting the door behind her.
After a few minutes, she returns, her closed in a neatly folded pile, her hair is down falling around her face and Jay is now in a black tshirt and grey sweatpants.
He can feel his stomach doing flips and he can't help but think how beautiful she looks simply in his clothes.
"You can take either side, whatever you are comfortable with" Jay offers, letting her pick which side of the bed.
She picks the side farther from the door, something she had always done when they were together.
Jay climbs into the bed on the other side, careful to leave some space in between them to make sure she doesn't feel uncomfortable. He reaches over to switch off the lamp before pulling the covers up.
"Hey Jay" Y/n says quietly, once they're settled in, her back facing him.
"Yeah?"
"I still love you, It never went away."
