First attempt at Trakenite writing system…
Quoth @bompstable in another thread I'm excerpting (a) not to spam OP further and (b) because it features meta about Nyssa, at least tangentially:
To go off on a tangent, that theatre thing is what makes The Keeper of Traken one of my all time favourite serials, and one of the best DWs ever in terms of world building and execution. They completely trust the stagey settings to convey to the audience that this is a world from a Shakespearean or historical drama, something the audience would be familiar with and be able to (consciously or not) read as a whole society without needing to explain much. I love that they had that much faith in their audience, including that they would have at least a passing, vague idea of the Fisher King myth. Use some medieval sets, some dry leaves, a cool monster, let the viewers fill in the gaps and the world feels full and whole. I love it. It's the series at its best, and when they work that way, it nearly always just works.
*incoherent sputtering* I... had also not made the Fisher King connection, associating the Keeper more with various myths of the dying and reborn god. Also I vaguely think of Midsummer Night's Dream thanks to Sarah's description of her "fairy" costume, but of course. Yes. Of course.
Also, while the Shakspearean costuming and staging of Keeper have always delighted me, I hadn't considered those elements consciously as I had The Web Planet in how they invite the mind to flesh out the whole world of Traken beyond the "wings" of those sets.
I now have a passing urge to plonk you in front of a projector and whip past all the classic Whos taking notes as you remark, "which is obviously a reference to the Eye of Balor/the tribute of 14 youths from Athens/the heart as the "Mediator" in Fritz Lang's Metropolis/Les Sylphides..."
I keep saying I need to do a thorough rewatch of classic Who. I'm sure I'd pick up a great deal I didn't as a kid. But still, when it's something you were raised on, it's difficult to think back to your childhood fishtank and realize the water must have been oxygenated.
I wasn't sure if it had been done… so I did it.
A hybrid of two warrior races? Can’t include Timelords - remember how Nyssa easily took out the Timelord security forces in Arc of Infinity?

So it is Trakenites instead!
Seron and Eda are a couple now.
Just realised — the Arcadians/Benign Union stuff in "BotW" pegging the Trakenites as distant post-humans rather than coincidentally-humanoid aliens means that in FP canon, Nyssa and Tegan don't get separated by the City of the Saved at all! :3
Wow, you're right! Unironically that's been the #1 criticism of the City's canonicity, as far as Tumblr's concerned at least. The Book of the War authors taking care of us before we even realized it 🤗
Honestly I thought maybe Serenity is meant to be inhabited by an human\Trakenite mix? And that the characters we meet on Serenity might be diff species each. (And Time Lords can visit the City of the Saved)
Because TARDIS wiki pegs Nyssa, Tremas, Logopolis’ Monitor, at 20th century individuals, so I thought the whole of New Beginnings was set January-March 1981.
A new story begins.
Nyssa & Luvic, starcrossed lovers.
“It’s me, the Garm. After curing Lazar’s Disease, fixing Terminus, bringing everyone back home, saving Adric, and burying your father at UNIT’s, there’s a next thing to do. There’s someone who wants to see you. Let’s just say… bringing your planet back will take a while.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“Let’s see… who might it be?”
“Oh. My. Source.”
Anyways, for those who haven’t seen Doctor Who Keeper of Traken, here’s the traits and bios.
Wow, a new adventure awaits!
ainley!Master dragon
i never want to paint a black dragon again it’s hard D:
no but i’m not entirely happy w/how they turned out, I have a very specific vision of their coloring but I couldn’t quite pull it off. kind of like the master and their schemes, really.
Tremas is the same but with more white on his horns and tail, I guess.

Look! Fraken won!
i think quantum and astrophysicists should be contractually obligated to dress like fancy old wizards at all times. same goes for (al)chemists and doctors and librarians and professors and engineers and electricians etc etc etc... different flavors of fancy old wizard
like, you know how judges get gavels and fancy powdered wigs and shit? STEM nerds should get to dress like gandalf
That’s basically the consuls
They so are.
I and Adric are neighbors now.
the plot of keeper of traken is just a society destroying itself through blind rule following. and ALSO there’s a big evil monster
It so is.
