❝Well, I don’t think Amethyst will be talking to me for a while…❞
In truth, Rose expected that all of the Crystal Gems were still reeling from her announcement, her choice to have a baby. To give her life to bring another into the world. Pearl was feigning support, but the pain was easily seen. Amethyst made no effort to hide her opinions. But Garnet– Garnet was, as ever, hard to read.
❝Don’t tell me you think I’m making the wrong decision, too…❞
Garnet found a semblance of comfort in not speaking at all, in not voicing her opinions and instead subtly influencing the decisions of others. She was often outright, yes, but when it came to interacting with the Crystal Gems, she chose subtlety over bluntness when bluntness proved to be of little help. In that way, she could also act as a grounding force for the group, something that, between Amethyst and Pearl’s occasional bickering, was often needed. It was subtlety that she felt would have worked best in this situation, but with just one sentence from Rose, subtlety lost its potential as an option. Her words made Garnet just barely shift from side to side in discomfort, lips pressing together. She had believed in Rose for hundreds of years prior, and a big part of her still very much did. It wasn’t enough to cause disillusionment with Rose’s actions, but it possibly did give her a bit of a bias. So much faith had been placed in her hands, and she had never misguided them before.
“You have a plan,” she began after some hesitation, words spoken more to reassure herself more than anything. Rose couldn’t have just chosen this path without any reason. There was some sort of catch, a reason for it all that not even Garnet’s own foresight could pick up on. A deep, steadying breath separated her first statement from her second. “And I trust you.”
And that would be the story of how she was going to refuse Greg her help for a long, long time. At least, with musical instruments. Basses, guitars… they didn’t matter. All she knew was that she could barely hear Garnet calling for her, this time. Already a step forward.
‘’HOW?! Horrible! I – Will never hear again!’’ She shook her head, tapping the side of her ear a few times.
Her voice grew even louder and yet was still calm as ever in response to Pearl still having difficulty in hearing her. She didn’t at all mind raising her voice. Steven, wherever he had run off to, was probably more than enjoying this exchange.
“You’re overreacting,” she began, pausing before continuing just a tad more loudly. At this point, her ‘speaking’ sounded more like dull shout. “Just give yourself some time.” Garnet was already fairly sure of how this was going to play out -- within a few hours, her hearing would come back to some semblance of normal. On the next day, she’ll be complaining of a headache.
Pearl watched her friend quietly as she seemed to think about how to respond to her. Garnet perhaps had sustained the worst injury of all of them and the ever-worried Pearl simply wanted to know if the leader was alright. They’d fought side by side together in the war– Garnet was all that remained from those days. Watching a smile tug its way onto Garnet’s lips relieved Pearl greatly. It meant, at least for the most part Garnet was alright and in turn Ruby and Sapphire were okay. Pearl may not worry over the other gems like she does Steven but she does worry. Threading her slender hands through the sand, the slender gem turned her attention to the star-studded sky. She could name nearly every single constellation.
“I’m afraid, Garnet. Home World is coming, that much is confirmed. We don’t have Rose– if another war breaks out we, we’re..” Pearl trailed off knowing Garnet would understand. She didn’t want to re-live the days of fighting and killing other gems. She didn’t want to think about the blood that was on her own and Garnet’s hands. Just what they did to keep Earth safe. “We don’t even have the numbers we had before– Their technology is so advanced, how are we going to keep Steven safe?” Pearl sighed gently eventually turning back to the other gem, Pearl would be stupid to think Garnet didn’t think about these realities, there’s a reason she was their leader now. “–We need her, don’t we.”
Pearl had been losing sleep over this. Gems didn’t need sleep or sustenance, no but the expression still very much works for her. She had been stressing herself over the possibility -- no, the feasability -- that the Homeworld Gems were coming back, that the fighting was going to resume sooner than either of them would have wanted. It was a lie to say that Garnet hadn’t been concerned about it, too -- in the stream of possibilities, when able to see the hundreds of potential outcomes, she could also see the intimidatingly large likelihood they had of being defeated. Admittedly, to keep herself calm, she just put more weight in the present.
Just as Garnet had formulated a calming response, though, Pearl spoke again -- we need her, don’t we. -- The words stung with the bitter truth that they were, in fact, rather hopeless without her, but it also brought about a question that would either work in or against Garnet’s favour; Rose must have been aware the fight was not truly over, so why did she leave?
“She must have had a plan for us.” Garnet continued her thoughts aloud, looking down at the water’s surface. Rose was a good leader. There was no way she gave up her physical form out of selfishness. There was a reason. There had to be. Either way, though, whether there was truly a plan or not, Garnet would still fight. She’d fight for Steven’s safety, and she wouldn’t stop until she could continue no longer.

“Good point!” He chirps, hand moving to rest on his chin as he thinks. What did he think snails could beat in a race? Aside from rocks and starfish, clearly. “Well.. maybe turtles? Those are pretty slow, right? And.. I dunno! Maybe there are just some super fast snails out there, that can beat ants and stuff!”
Well Steven definitely wasn’t wrong, at least with his last statement. It was very likely that there was a fast snail out there, but if there wasn’t, one could be made to move quickly by just rolling it or throwing it. Such unorthodox ways of making a snail move quickly, though, were doubtfully going to be approved by Steven, as they brought about the risk of Garnet accidentally crushing the creature. For something that bolstered such a shell, they were awfully weak. Or maybe she was just too strong. Who knows. At least Steven wasn’t quite as upset as he was earlier. Drawing her hands away, Garnet rested them on her own legs, still crouched down in a manner that looked less comfortable than it actually was.
“We can probably find a fast snail.” Or a slightly-less-slow-than- usual one that was willing to partake in any sort of race. She figured any snail would be more than happy to compete with hopes that it would make its whole kind proud.

The evening sun, setting down upon the horizon over the distant sea, tran- sitioned itself over to the night-time moon. The light reflected upon the moon casts a glimmering radiance that seemed incomparable to the sun itself.
The squawks of seagulls had silenced, and the city next door had gone to rest. The lights of the house, just below the temple, had ceased, declaring its slumber until to be awakened in the morning. All but a few inhabitants had not turned their self in for the night, with one just outside.
She sat on the porch chair, gazing up at the distant moon over the ocean, thinking of things. Things that kept her mind at a constant unrest.
Her train of thought was interrupted, how ever, when she sensed a disturbance behind her.
Garnet always felt a slight pang of guilt whenever she interrupted Pearl, especially if it meant tearing her from her thoughts. It was the case even then, when Pearl was likely better off being pulled away from the musings that plagued her mind. Her actions were as silent as she was. Noiseless footsteps carried her towards Pearl with only the soft creak of floorboards giving her away. She stopped when she was beside the other Gem, taking a seat on the floor beside the chair, legs crossing as she stared forward at everything and yet nothing in particular. There was no warning given out before Garnet raised her hand to rest it on the other’s knee. No warning save for slow and wordless deliberation.
Comfort. It was still a foreign concept to her, but she tried regardless, still silent and patiently waiting for words from Pearl that she was well aware may never come. It was comfort designed to work at her pace, not Garnet’s own.
“Starfish?” Oh, no, he hadn’t even thought about starfish! “I– I dunno! I’ve never really seen one move around. I’ve seen snails move, so I know they’re slow. But I’ve only ever seen starfish hanging out on rocks!” His lips purse, and he gently pats Garnet’s wrists in thought. “I think.. I think starfish are kinda lazy. I don’t think they’d race at all. Snails could definitely beat starfish.”
“You’ve got to consider every option.” Her words sounded less like an upbeat exclamation and more like a blunt statement, regardless of the fact that she intended for it to be the former. So as to not dote on it for too long, though, she quickly moved on.
Perhaps to inspire Steven to come up wiith a --likely better-- answer of his own, her tone turned to a serious one, voice dropping as she asked, “What do you think snails could beat?”
I just want to let you know, Garnet that you inspire me to be a better version of myself each day. You're awesome! I'd give you a hug but I'd rather not make you mad.
“I wouldn’t mind a hug.”
She was never – and she would have repeated – never going to partake in those games again. When did Greg had such a good idea, speaking ironically? But most of all, why did she had to help him? No clue, perhaps her good and caring attitude as ever. But that left her ears ringing and her strut to sway a bit, in a drunkenly fashionionable walk.
She opened the door with a shaky hand, and turned to wave at Steven and the fusion on the couch. She frowned when she saw Garnet’s lips moving, squinted and replied back with a scream.
‘’WHAT?! I can’t hear you!’’
Whatever Pearl had done was her business and her business alone, yes, but there was something almost entertaining about her current state. Hopefully, the other Gem wouldn’t spontaneously keel over, but while she wasn’t dreadfully incapacitated, Garnet saw no trouble in taking Pearl’s time.
“How did it go?” She repeated herself more loudly this time, but her voice didn’t reach shouting level. It seldom did.
from what ive seen your garnet is super accurate and thats hard to do with a muse like her
