But I’m glad I did. If I’d left it it would have just been a pretty cool sketch, but now it’s more than that. It is a worthy sacrifice in my journey to competently paint

This is a film I did for my Art Place class, where we take an atea (open, public area) and make multi-medial art based on it. Mine was Oriental Bay in Wellington.

The original concept behind this short film was to highlight the effect of climate change on young people. I aimed for the start to show a kind of scene you’d see in Outer Banks, with young adults messing around on the beach, having the time of their lives, and that’s life for them. Eventually, the subject matter would start to change, depicting more and more their reality of struggling to find food and water, and staying out of the dangerously hot sun - thus the reality of pollution and a rapidly heating world comes more into focus. Obviously, that’s not really been achieved here. It turned into a kind of short film about a couple of people doing weird stuff on the beach who start arguing. The bigger issues are only kind of hinted at. Still, for a project that I had only 2 days to film and edit, I’m fond of it.
