he's tried not to change their routine too much, but it's been a rocky adjustment. husk's gone out of his way to meet angel in places that aren't just the bar, to free them from the smoky dusk lighting and sharp, persistent smell. nothing to be done about what's done, husk thinks, but there's still space to move forward. gotta think like that down here. he didn't always, not after alastor, but he ain't made of stone, and this place been gettin' to everybody lately.

"you believe that?" he asks, low and dry. disagreeing with angel isn't a pleasant habit and he's been pulled on it before. husk softens the hard line of his mouth and leans hard on his elbow, wrist rotating lazily as if to cushion the words.                   HE   WAS   QUITE   AWARE   OF   HIS   EYES   ON   HIM.   HE   felt   the   observation.   You’re   just   prey   that   wears   predator   clothing.   It   was   cold,   bored   even,   and   that   set   a   flame   inside   the   beast’s   belly.   Alastor   didn’t   care   for   that   silent   judgement   because   it   stirred   memories   that   he   longed   that   he   crushed.   But,   no,   he   never   conquered   them.   He   only   pushed   them   down,   down,   down   so   he   didn’t   have   to   face   them.   He   masked   them,   turned   them   away   until   they   all   blended   together.   Now   as   they   surface   they’re   more   monstrous   than   ever.   They   overwhelmed   him,   made   him   feel   small,   and   made   him   want   to   hide.

               A   SOUND   REVERBERATED   IN   THEIR   CHESTS   AND   WALLS   THAT   SURROUNDED   them;   a   growl   that   was   filled   with   warning.   However,   it   pitched   into   a   mournful   shrill   lost   in   the   static   that   had   settled   between   them   prior.   This   sound   came   from   deep   within,   and   spilled   out   of   him   in   a   wisp   of   darkness…   his   shadow.   It   curled   around   his   shoulders   while   its   expression   flashed   and   contorted   into   different   emotions.   It   couldn’t   decide   what   it   felt,   but   Alastor   on   the   other   hand,   kept   his   smile.   

               A   SIGH   SLIPPED   BY   PARTED   LIPS,   AND   A   CLAW   WAVED   off   the   shadowy   figure   as   it   neared   his   face.   His   shadow   wanted   him   to   see,   to   even   feel,   the   buried   memories   that   had   been   awakened.   This   was   neither   the   time   or   place   for   it,   “   Reputation,   a   ghost   or   not,   still   has   its   use,   yes?   Tall   tales   make   people   believers,   make   them   frightened,   and   fall   in   line.   Of   course,   there   are   a   few   that   don’t   believe.   These   people   will   search   for   the   truth,   and   when   they   come   for   it,   I’ll   be   sure   to   make   them   a   believer.   ”

for a moment, husk says nothing. there isn't much he can say - alastor's doing all the work for him, trembling in place like some small, thin creature caught in a gale. the room itself hums with his power, makes husk's wings rattle and shake against the back of his chair. there's power and fear at play in equal measure, nails digging into the board. his eyes flick over the dark wisps of thought that dissipate between alastor's fingers, catlike and sure. "that what you wanna think?"

they've never been friends. there's never been a moment husk could be sure of what, exactly, alastor thought of him underneath the pomp and circumstance. sure, he thinks he's better, always one step and six thoughts ahead, always got something cruel and half-clever tucked under one ratty sleeve, but the truth of it? buried too deep for even a career conman to discern completely. "ain't no one else tellin' you straight, i'll give you that. either they think you don't need to hear it or they figure you'll throw one'a your tantrums and skin 'em over a little sound advice."

husk looks at him, one tired creature getting down to the bones of another. "might be i'm the only one who sees it for what it is. call that care, 'f it makes you feel better. truth is, i don't wanna put up with whatever's out there that's worse'n you."

"way you're lookin', i'm damn surprised i made it this far." angel's far taller, the long lines of him blurred by the warm light. house lifts his thigh anyway, tilting them against the lip of the worn wood just enough to dig in. there's a fascinating cut in angel's dress that starts somewhere high up and ends down low. he's been worrying at it with his thumb all night. house shifts their weight, easing angel up a little higher, half to remind him just how strong he really is, just how much of that strength is at the tip of angel's fingers. "better tell that to your woman." house makes a vague, one-handed gesture. he doesn't remember her name, that long-legged broad on the tv, but he sure remembers her voice. "slick little broadcast you got there. covers so much, so fast." he raises an eyebrow over the rim of his glass, letting the implication sit. when a story blooms every minute, the voices with the power to verify stop being able to keep up. house swallows his drink down, a low 'mm' in his throat. house and his relationship to his image my beloved. house believes it's antithetical to his warm, approachable persona if he goes too hard on the polish and preen of his district (say, sharp suits every night, perfect hair, not a wrinkle on his shirt) but he also loves the extravagant and the gaudy (see: the neon lights, decorations packed on decorations, how none of his buildings ever just settle on one inspiration). he has to occupy this strange middle ground to remain as manipulative and successful as he does. this is why you'll see him looking a bit toussled - sleeves rolled up to the elbow, hair stylishly out of place, suit jacket discarded - while he's also toting around his crystal ball cane.

he's always been a grifter and a working man. that doesn't change when the money pours in, because it can't. it's who he is but it's also the most deceitful version of the house; i'm just like you and look what i have. you could win it all, same as me. it's a lot of work to look like there was hardly any work involved ygm.

as for husk. who cares honestly. you are all lucky he's HERE and UPRIGHT right now. now velvette does say "put a shirt on you mangy stray" canonically so i think we are supposed to believe he isn't wearing a shirt in canon but like. he also has buttons on his chest. so i think we're taking a few liberties with the truth here. regardless again he does not care so what if he isn't wearing a shirt he has pants on that are clean. he also doesnt wear shoes. whats the fucking problem

husk knows without turning that they're alone in the bar as soon as angel's voice melts into the soft mumble he saves for sincerity. angel's a performer by nature, always on to some extent, but the seduction falls away on occasion. his ear twitches, then turns, rotates outward just enough to catch the resonance of the sound. privately, he smiles.

there's a moment in which he can't decide if his pride matters more than angel's. a pause, a mental coin toss, a faltering look into the black hole of outcomes he'd sworn himself away from. when he turns, still traced with fondness, something inside him steps away from the edge. "ain't a surprise to anyone payin' attention."

husk had always thought, mostly to himself (but aloud when nifty half-listened), that pentious had the easy run. the guy was a pipsqueak, all hot air and no real harm. show him a kind word and a warm glance, he's laughing all the way to the gates. angel's working at it, really working, uprooting in the darkness and letting it mean more to him openly than husk thought possible at first. "i ain't the guy they call when they want the final word, y'know, but..." he rolls the words around in his mouth, tongue flat against his cheek. how best to say it without making it sound like pentious was better, is better, than angel has been? how best to phrase it so he says what he means? "looks fine to me," the house hums, leaned heavy on one shoulder. he's done his best to approach angel only when angel wants him, though these moments always feel the hardest; watching angel press and touch his own face gently, turning this way and that in the mirror they'd set up for him, the lights glittering in his eyelashes. the smarter decision is to stand back. nothing this sweet ever lacks bite. his tail curls lightly in the air, the feather-fan rustling hushed against the doorframe.

"'sides, we're headed back up again in an hour." greed is his home away from home to be sure, but pride's where the beating heart lives. magic kat has been pulling in his best numbers since opening night, no surprise there. "wanted to give you the full tour, tha's all. nothin' to see down here 'cept circus acts." not one of them will spend what they've got on making this ring what it could be. they all covet too much and risk too little. the stagnation of it suffocates. "how's this: when we leave, we'll swing through lust. see if ozzie's'll take us for the night." house holds out a hand, beckoning with two quick fingers. "you bring your dancin' shoes?" @goodtouch.

hour four's closing in rapidly. the thing about the both of them is that no stone can truly be left unturned; every time the conversation lulls, a new pit is spat straight out in full view. house leans back in his chair, one hand loose around his sweating glass. "lotta things don't work for you. including my girls."

"you got enough shiny things, don't you?" house is careful to ease his voice into something calm. curious, even, if he were to commit just a little further. "they spill out once filming's through. i see 'em." the overhanging tower that blasts light into his backyard is full of tittering mites in faux fur and thin straps, all of them trained and ready for the flash of a bulb. "no sense in bein' difficult. i promise you, kid, it'll take your little starlets less time to learn a couple hands than it will to media train my staff." @populied.

strange for them to show face down here. the house and his herd were no strangers to the wounded or destitute after an extermination. when one loses everything or watches holy fire spark up in the hearth, they'll clutch the first outstretched hand they see. at his doorstep has always been another matter. the angelic flock had seemed, simply, to miss them. there were no deals struck or promises made. dumb luck, house remembers hearing from one patron. he'd gritted his teeth and kept an eye on the skies.

she won't expect him to meet her head-on. he knows his own wings are cumbersome things, made purposefully to look decorative and grand. they'd done their best on his death to make a spectacle of him, some misbegotten creature at a penny-pinching side show. he'd refused. when he ruffles the loose slips on the concrete and kicks up dust, the ground slipping from under him, he wills himself to keep balance.

"nothin' for you, missy." they beat their wings in unison, beasts of prey at a standoff only one can truly dominate. house can smell a losing game from miles off. these odds don't slide and caress like the ones he tends to inside the walls of his domain. stone things, fixed and immovable. "bunch'a showtunes and mindless slaughter. you wanna sink your teeth in? you want pride." anywhere rather than here. he points one long claw into the smoke-ringed horizon.
